  • Ever opened a can of Guinness and noticed a strange rattling sound when you shake it? There's a foreign object in there. But, it has a purpose.

    I'm no chemist, but there's still CO2 in Guiness, but instead of adding extra like in almost all other beers they pump in some nitrogen into the can before sealing it. The nitrogen then makes its way into the ball, and when the can is opened it is released, agitating the CO2 in the beer, causing it to fizz.

      I'm an Ambassador for Guinness. You're partly right, and this is the only part of the video they get wrong. There is a mixture of 75% N2 & 25% CO2 in the beer. During the canning process, a dose of liquid N2 is shot into the can, and then it's sealed. The liquid evaporates, causing pressure in the can and forcing a mixture of gas & beer into the Widget. When the can is cracked open, the Widget releases that mixture, and through friction, the gas (both N2 & CO2) are broken out of suspension in the beer.

    • @jimmycallahan
      @jimmycallahan 4 года назад +2

      Well, that and you're supposed to pour slowly down the side of the glass at a 45 degree angle so you don't get a bunch of ambient air bubbles like in the video. Smooth, slow pour.

    i think that ball is the reason why guinness cans are 44 cl instead of 50 cl.

    • @thornhillplumbing

      The technique in this video is the best way to pour a Guinness. The can has to be cold too. You end up with a nice creamy pint.

    • @philiporeillycork
      @philiporeillycork 3 года назад +1

      @@thornhillplumbing you’d be hard to find any Guinness drinker in Ireland that would find that pour acceptable. You don’t pour a full can in quickly to the glass as it needs to be done slowly and after about 70% full you leave it settle for a while before pouring the remainder. A good Guinness requires patience!

    • @thornhillplumbing
      @thornhillplumbing 3 года назад

      @@philiporeillycork guess it's down to personal preference. I find your way doesn't give a smooth enough pint.
      I used to do it your way until my 4 year old daughter pored me a pint by pouring straight into the glass quickly and I was surprised how good it tasted!

    Does the plastic ball make recycling the cans a problem? Should we cut open the cans to remove the balls before recycling? Inquiring minds want to know!

    • @charleszp938
      @charleszp938 3 года назад +3

      I'm guessing the recycling instructions are probably somewhere on the can.

  • @charleszp938
    @charleszp938 3 года назад +4

    Btw, you can easily break an empty aluminum can by crushing the middle until it's flat, bend the ends back and forth, then twist the top and bottom in opposite directions.
    Now you have a sharp piece of metal.

      Widgets are common in British canned brews. The next most common other than Guinness is John Smiths of Tadcaster. I don't drink either. If i had the choice I'd definitely go for John Smiths, it has a much milder taste and aroma compared to Guinness. This is just my personal opinion. I could enjoy both if i were offered either of them. But i prefer flat ales :)

I then went online to see if this was a mistake but now I know it was supposed to be there lol thank goodness....
