The Secret of Ecoprint Technique (Full Tutorial) Part 2 • The Secret of Ecoprint...
So hi, im roman, FINALLY todays video id like to show you the secret recipe how i made ecoprint on fabric, how i create a beautifull print on it, a secret why and how the leave or the flower leave their shape beautifully, this is base on my exploration, maybe the weather, ph level of water and so many factor will affect the result, but you can try this recipe.
This video is maybe long, but i dont want to cut the video so i will show you every step of the process of the textile making.
Step by step :
1. Choose the best fabric/materials
2. Clean the fabric (Scouring), i have 2 ways to clean deeply the fabric (2 method)
3. Preparing the fabric (Mordanting), 2 step to make your fabric is ready to dye.
4. Selection of the plants.
5. Bundles and Steam Technique.
6. I love you.
1. Fabric / Materials
The first is the most important before you making natural dyes, selection of fabric or material, because we work on natural dyes, natural things, so make sure the fabric that u ll be use is from nature also, like linen, cotton, or maybe silk.
2. Scouring
The second, is to scoured the fabric, what is scouring means? Scouring refers to thoroughly washing or deep cleaning the fabric, to remove residue or residual chemicals on the cloth from the factory when fabric making.
This is one factor of success in achieving strong color on natural dyes, is to start with completely clean fabric. Does this mean fabric washed in washing machine? No! We think the washer gets our clothes totally clean but it honestly does not. That is why, to get a good even coverage with your dyes, it is very important that you deep clean your cellulose fabric such as cotton, linen, bamboo, or maybe silk.
For me, this is my method, i have 2 ways to scour the fabric, the first is boil the fabric on hot water with some soda ash about 20 minutes, or if you dont have a soda ash you can use any detergent, but i recomend a soda ash and TRO (Turkish Red Oil). Boil for 20 minutes and ready for the next step, but if you patient enoght i have another tips, another methos, that is leave your fabric on soda ash mix with water for about a night or a couple night, until the fabric is clean and dry it.
3. Mordant
The 3rd step, next for this step is to mordant the fabric, what is mordant means? Mordant is like to prepare your fabric for natural dyes, mordanting process make your fabric good enought to sticking the tanin (the substance in plants that produces color/natural dyes) from leaves and flower. More rich the tannins on a plant, more strong the color will be.
There is 2 step of mordanting the fabric,
Mordant First step, recipe (you can re-adjust composition) :
Aluminium Sulfate (Tawas)
Iron Sulfate (Tunjung)
Baking Soda
Vinegar
Mix all the ingredients with water
Dry the fabric.
Note : be careful with fragile fabric like silk, dont add too much recipe
Mordant Second step, recipe :
Calcium Carbonate (lime betle/kapur sirih)
Mix with water
Ready to print or you can dry it and keep for print when you need. (Make sure make it wet again the fabric before you print)
For the precise composition please follow and dm me on instagram / roman.muhtar ✨
4. Selection of Plant
More rich the tannin on a plant, more strong the color will be.
What i choose :
Hibiscus flower (Bunga sepatu)
Bidens pilosa (Dom dom an/babadotan)
Acalypha (Daun Ekor Kucing)
Vernonia (Daun Afrika)
And many more you can explore
5. Bundles Ecoprint

Great explanation. Regards from Spain and thank you for your generosity sharing your knowledge. All the best!
I liked the tone of the video, your fashion and the quality of itself!
Love your creativity and sharing. Glad I found your videos
I have seen others simmering their fabric in hot mordant water like 80 degrees for 1.5 hrs or so. But I like this method because it is not so energy intensive! And also you allow scouring with normal laundry detergent which is great as I can't find soda ash in this country! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your process!
🌼Really helpful for a beginner 🌼🌼
Dude, you might consider live streaming. The camera loves you and what you do truly is an art.
Thanks, man this was helpful❤
Thank you Roman. Your second method is always better. Like the mordant using kapur sirih. This is easily available in most Malaysian Melayu Kitchen :)
Thank you for being so helpful. Cape Town.🤲♥️‼️

When you use iron mordant do you wear gloves?
Ater scouring, dry it under the sun. Tottaly dry? Bfr the fabric mordant? Or not necessary tottally dry?
I followed you on insta, but there are no compositions. Can you describe how much iron, vinegar and baking soda you used? Thanks a lot
No! You need to figure that out yourself based on how much water, the type and weight of natural fabric, and the pH of the water you're using.
You can clearly see from his video he has roughly 2-4 tablespoons of the powders. This is a technique that comes with trial and error. Even if he gave you precise measurements, it still would be different for each of us based on the factors I mentioned previously.
Even the amount/intensity of sunlight will impact your results. Just figure it out on your own.
I kinda rough estimated the powders based on the video.... I guess I put too much iron sulfate and this is what happened ....my entire white fabric turned dark yellow
@@tiwantiwaabibiman2603fair enough but what if you have a neutral pH of 6.5-7? Surely there's a formula of one started with this.
So what I'm gathering here is you want to make sure your cotton is totally free of any chemicals that may have been either purposely or accidently placed on it. For instance perfume would and could somehow effect your outcome.
That second step with the salts baking soda and vinegar also works great to unplug a sink drain. Just dump the dry ingredients in the drain first then pour boiling water on top n watch it go
Can this method work in folower pounding with a hammer?
is it essential to put Aluminum or can I leave it out and not use it?
In the first step, do you use a mixture of soda ash and detergent or do you soak it for a day?
He says for a day or 2 in the video and it's in the description.
Hello Roman, I love your videos about the Ecoprint, but I have a question, how would you go about doing the ecoprint on a t shirt if you want to do the printing only in one side of the T shirt and not on the other side ? Is there a way to make sure the part I don't want to retain the print doesn't get damage by the printing. Thanks a million and looking forward to watch more of your videos, I really like them.
Parchment paper between the the front and back.
Hi Roman .İs this mordant for cellulose fabrics ? Or silk?Thank youu😊😊
He said it was for natural fabrics several times at the beginning of the video and in the description. Jeeesh!
What kind of soda you use kostik soda?
Oh I want you to wear gloves if you can, so your hands will not dry up badly as you get older! Thank you for this wonderful video, clear & enjoyable detailed information! All the best to you in all you do
Does it vanish out the colour after wash
Thank you, very generous share. would soda ash work as well as ? and what is the turkish oil? not sure I am understanding the word you are saying?
Google it dude.
I'm from Myanmar. I would like to know the proportion of ingredients and need to use calcium hydroside.
Figure it out yourself...
1.Tujuan direbus dg cairan deterjen/direndam dg cairan deterjen +tawas apa?
2.Tujuan dibilas dg campuran vinegar, tawas,Tunjung apa?
So the Turkish Red oil is castor oil?
Yes. It's also called Sulfated castor oil.
Where is part 2 please ? I want to print Hanf leaves
This is so nice, but it is not a tutorial at all.
Read all the questions in comments :))) - just nobody gets it. I understand random measurements, even that :" you can use this or that" but using random terms in English like " use soda" - which soda?
I love watching this guy, he really inspired me to try natural monoprints on textile, but for tutorial I have to search further.
Kenapa kain yang di mordant jadi bernoda kuning. Itu kenapa ya
No entiendo el idioma 😔😭😭😭
