I absolutely love what the car community is doing with EV conversions. So many great ideas of ways to reuse old components instead of ending up in a landfill
turbo honda k24 would of been a far better swap. k24's beat the fastest ev's on the planet.
@@billybobbob3003there are factory EV cars that do 258 mph top speed, and a simple Plaid will do 2.3 0-60 and a low 9 sec quarter mile. And that’s stock, so modified it would do much better, there are sub 2 second 0-60 cars. I like the K24, but you’re a little heavy on the hyperbole.
@@miragesmack007 might wanna look up k24 doing 1/4 mile in 5 seconds no EV on the planet can touch that modified or not. Not to mention there is naturally aspirated k24s running 8 seconds.
Beautiful job!
This car is now MUCH better than it was when it was new.
I agree
Me, staring at the fiero in the driveway, hmm....
Do it! For me! Always wanted one but we dont have them here
This is what a Fiero was always meant to be!
14:14 Triple gauges mimicking old OP and temp gauges to now indicate batt SOC and volts. One of my favorite parts of your build. We underestimate what the old analog gauges did for us. It became a memory thing so you knew where that needle was supposed to be, and if it wasn't, it drew your attention, and you would know something was off. They trained your brain. Absolutely brilliant, not too hard to incorporate, one of those simple but understated genius moments. Great add on for a modern EV frankly!! As a former auto mechanic and now a web dev, I LOVE what you guys are doing! Will be watching you closely! Liked/Subbed, keep 'em coming guys!
11:27 Purple Rain: Prince, Journey?, Peter Gabriel: Plays Live, and Fleetwood Mac: Rumours - nice! Oh and pretty awesome ⚡Fiero too!
You know what must happen with the exhaust tips now... you must put a bubble machine in each side.
fact
😂
Holy crap that's brilliant. I was going to say set up a speaker system for fake engine noise pumped through the exhaust tips, but I like bubbles more. :)
@16:05 - 140hp, 170ft lbs. (for 1985) -- Sounds horrible, but for that time period in a car that weighed ~2700lbs it wasn't bad. Bought my first one in '85. Have had dozens over the years with almost every engine someone could stuff in it. I'm down to ONLY two now! :D
I had an 86 SE with the V6 and it could keep up with the Trans-Ams from the same era especially in the corners. I did it a few times and the Trans-Am guy would always be surprised.
I had a GT.... It felt quite quick at the time. It was definitely more about the Twisties though.
This is what the EV1 should have been.
85' Pontiac Fiero SE 2M6 was my first car. Thank you for keeping the integrity and style of this beautiful vehicle. You can tell a lot of love and appreciation went into this build. Enjoy it!
Really cool. A good looking car (if you like 80s cars) which was way underpowered. Now it has the power it deserves and more. It makes sense and it looks cool in my opinion.
Very good job. Love the philosophy & the final result. A lot of classic cars are classic because of their design but their engines were garbage.
Keeping them alive and kicking with modern guts is a good thing. Subscribed.
Thanks, ;-)
Any car you can get a full tank at home is got to be great.
This car was at this year's Denver Auto Show. I regret not asking how they remade the taillights to say 'electric' as they look brand new.
Amazing job on this build. So slean :D WOuld love to see a 1985 Firebird build
Fantastic looking car, and now faster then originally
I had 2 Fieros in the 1990’s, SE and 2M4. Loved them. This is a really cool project!
Very cool! It's looks a Matchbox car but XXL size 🤣
Loved the Fiero. Loved the Buick Regal. This show is fantastic.
Factory 0-60 on the 1988 GT was 8.0s - not fast but not a slouch, especially for the time. But 5 seconds is quick by any yardstick.
It probably has more range now than it did on the tiny fuel tank it originally came with 😃. I had a red 86GT notchback for my first car. This looks awesome! Great job guys.
It does! A full tank would get me about 215 miles. A full charge takes me to 250.
It's great that converted EVs are so much better built than EVs from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. So many of those cars didn't even put the batteries in an enclosure. I still have reservations about putting the batteries in crumple zones though. Still probably safer than 90% of classic cars...
Super cool! 💯
Yes the American mr2 answer and very fun little cars to drive! I had a 86gt v6 5-speed once upon a time lowered on gold 17s with a killer home made sound system, dynomatted the whole interior, had a ps2 in it with wireless controllers, flip down screen etc.
Imo though it's better suited to a small pack with a tesla 3 du especially one from a new 2024 m3p with 408hp. 👍🏻😀
One thing you could do for the exhaust pipes: Put high powered speakers in them with a sound simulation system amplifier and simulate the sound of an ICE Liero! That would be epic!
12:00 get some addressable LEDs in those vestigial tail pipes stat! hahaha make them light up or change colour with speed or some other condition... charge? IDK
I was going to add a similar comment, but you beat me to it. They could either function as additional running-lights, or could change color or pattern (I'm thinking concentric rings) with throttle position/load. 😀
I love, love, love the analog gauges.
Very professional installation.
nothing like fieros. a very fun car to drive anyway u like. I currently own an 86 gt auto. so fun. excellent on the ev conversion.
I love ev so much keep on the pressure ev revolution is the best revolution
Absolutely gorgeous conversation 😎⚡️ Funny side node is that even guys who do EV conversations mix up Power (kW) end energy (kWh) 😉
Yes, we incorrectly shorten this when speaking sometimes...
Ok now that is a cool idea!
The perfect conversion platform ... Not a single petrolhead will feel bad about it.
I’m planning one myself, but you would be wrong about folks being upset. The Fiero community as a whole doesn’t like them. They prefer the super charge six conversion, or the LS conversions, some of which have 800+ HP. I’m doing an EV swap just to say I did. I’m not a huge EV fan, but I can’t complain about something I know little of, the only problem is the cost, they are a lot of money for all the issues they present. As a diy guy I’m speaking.
Solid!! And another Colorado shop, Nice.
dont worry there's more coming!!!
Suspension rework and comma ai self driving, you would be there. Awesome
Can't fix terrible, the suspension
I don’t know if anyone has asked but what is the approximate cost of the conversion excluding donor car price. Awesome work
" if you have to ask ......."
I'm in the same boat as I have to ask as well lol 😂.
That’s effin cool
Bring the self driving trans am. The actual Fiero when released as an electrified version will be great.
Always loved the looks of the Fiero, but the performance was lacking. Looked into V8 swaps. May have to do a Tesla swap!
Should put speakers in the exhaust pipes for sound. You can pick any car sound.
Could you explain why you couldn’t use the Tesla onboard charge controller and even go to Tesla chargers? I didn’t understand that. Thanks
Tesla chargers are DC Fast which we don't currently have this car configured for (AC charging only). We are using the Tesla onboard charger, but had to utilize an aftermarket board to make it work.
I've never heard of a Fiero blowing-up. The 4-cyl leaking hot oil past it's original rocker cover gasket, causing a fire... yeah. And the V-6: Praise only...! But blowing-up? No... that's a misnomer, brought on by lack of information, much like with the safety of Pintos--especially the wagon-style bodied ones--built AFTER the model-year of the one that had such poor safety test results. Be smart, people... know your stuff!😡
I’m planning on an 85 GT EV swap myself, notch back for less weight. I’m obsessed with the weight, where did you all end up compared to stock, of total if you know, plus f/r bias as well. I’m not going for 100% stock appearance like you, so have reduction options that you don’t. Still sorting out the powertrain direction, but would love to know the weight gain you have alluded to. Very nice work, looks great.
3500 pounds.
Electric Fiero EV... there was one in the Naked Gun movies... had solar panels on it. The same car was also feature in a drama TV series... I do not know the name but one episode it was featured as "The Solar" and the executives were corrupt, they couldn't figure out how to recharge the batteries and did not want the investors to know.
Great idea. This is what I want to do to a Fiero ❤❤
That's a beautiful Fiero
I want a conversion that uses the old exhaust for cooling or something 12:30
18:08 No, it's a *steel* chassis with a (fiberglass reinforced) plastic body.
Indeed. Just misspoke, sorry.
@@ClassicEVConversions No worries. I wouldn't have bothered commenting if I didn't enjoy the video. 🙂
I used to drive past the Fiero plant every day on my way to school. It's too bad they killed off that car in '88 right after spending millions on the suspension redesign. It was an awesome car after that.
I want to do this to my daily driver 1st gen Chevy S10 blazer!!!!
We have a "91 S10 in the shop now - getting a RWD 600HP Tesla conversion. Another S10 (but 4wd) scheduled for a conversion in the fall.
@@ClassicEVConversions Awesome! Cant wait to see it!!! 600? Is that motors from the PLAID?
85kwh in a Fiero should have 300+ miles of range!
250.
A possible good, and less expensive alternative to purchasing a new EV. I’ll go for it.
It won’t be much less expensive, and take a while to do it as a diy guy. I’m hoping it’s 2-3 years max once I start. I’m seeing used Teslas in the $15,000 range, a little more for better examples. They have horrible resale, so it’s cheaper to get into one now.
Curious what the total weight, and what the bias is?
It's up to 3500 pounds with about 45%F, 55%R.
@@ClassicEVConversions - Not bad! The stock cast iron V6 IS (was) a heavy pig for what it was. You're a little light on the nose now if you ever get the chance to move stuff forward. They get kind of 'dancy' at high speeds from front end lift.
Way too cool!
Mine just sits after I found that the insulation makes me break out in rashes. I wish I could swap mine out for a decent price.
How about the VW pickup pacing alongside hahahaha
That's our shop truck. Also electric!
and we'll see more of it soon... ;-)
Now this is a pretty great idea for an EV swap. The originals having pretty bad cooling and air flow and all. NICE.
Does having all the battery weight ahead of the front axles and high over the rear hurt the balance? How would this fare in autocross?
Maybe put engine sounds through tail pipes?
Totally put batteries right into the front crumple zone.
Does it still have the mid engine weight balance and handling or is it more front heavy ?
it's still balanced as it was (over 2/3 of the modules are in the back)
This is great. But why keep halogen lights? It's kind of past the point of a retro-mod.
We've been talking about changing them for over a year but just haven't prioritized. Flip-ups really become "out of sight out of mind"!
and im sorry, this is unique but this doesn't OUT DUE a 3800 s2 supercharged fiero but kudos to uniqueness i had a 400hp fiero 2400pds wet with 315 rear tires and heavy duty rear springs, it was quick and fast even in stock but with some headers CAI some msd packs and iridium splugs and tuned it moved averaging over 34mpg at 60mph, sold it for 6300usd best sports care i ever had had 80s synth vibe and seat headrest speakers was the best
Why didn't you put the battery packs in the tunnel? You'd have more weight in the center of mass.
That was in our initial thinking too, but the area is not as big as you think. They just don't fit. Remember, they only fit about 9-gallons of gas in that tunnel! We utilized the tunnel for low-voltage electronics and BMS.
I had an 88 Fiero GT. It was way down on power with a measly 140 HP V6, but that wasn't the point. It handled great, it could dart from corner to corner, and it was fun to try to get the most out of it by shifting aggressively. You've ruined that by saddling it with a 1000 pound battery and a one speed transmission. You've missed the point, totally.
We hear you - it was fun to drive with that measly V6 and sounded great from the cockpit during that aggressive shifting. Come visit us and you can drive it - we think you'll like it! 🙂
I love it! And actually a lot less likely to catch fire than the ICE Fiero! That is the better body style too!
Did they say what the range was?
About 240-250 miles, if you can keep out of full send!
What is your typical range?
250 miles
It's such an awesome car! With such awesome range. Better off putting in a supercharged 3800. Bolts right in easier than this bullshit.
What about air conditioning? How did you deal with this?
We don't currently have AC in this one, just heat. We're looking for the ideal AC setup that would fit in one of the few open spaces we have left in this really small car.
i just started the video i bet my 2 left nuts the price range of that fiero won't be told via conversion rough estimate
Cool but if I cut your wire no go huH
I'd be more interested in a fiero with a GT2rs engine or a McLaren 765lt engine.
Did anyone hear what the effective operating range of it is? Because I sure didn't... and if it's not terribly "acceptably" big--as high or higher than the car it's components were sourced from--then what's the point other than just essentially making an inner-city car with "Look... we made it electric!" bragging rights?😕
About 240-250 miles, if you can keep out of full send!
