    Love seeing stuff like this. My grandfather use to go to pawn shops and get $100 guitars and make them reasonably playable (acoustic guitars) and give them away to anyone who wanted to play. Sort of reminds of him.

      It's not the tools fault. One time I tried to pull a knob off my ebay tele with my fingers. The knob came out and so did the shaft from the pot with it. Turns out the set screw in the knob was stripped so the PO superglued the knob to the shaft. The set screw in the knob was spinning in circles when I backed it out so I had no idea it was stripped. Fortunately I'm handy with a soldering iron so I replaced all of the junk pots.

  • @tungtobak
    @tungtobak 6 лет назад

    For knobs I use a flat shoelace, get it under there and just pull straight up. No chance of damaging either the knob or the guitar.

    And to Phil...yer one stand up guy. Pimping these axes out is pretty damn cool. I especially liked the one vid where the guy sent in his Epi Les Paul but the neck snapped from shipping (and he packed it pretty damn well). And you found the exact same axe...pimped that one. Sent it back. AND repaired the broken one as well. Just a solid move. I dig your vids homie. And I try and watch every damn one. We need more cats like you in the guitar community. I mean that.

    I would love to get an ML or some other kind of pointy, metal-oriented guitar - and then just play clean stuff like the Beatles, Beach Boys, R.E.M., etc.
    Or even better yet: Playing jazz on it, using the ML's ergonomic shape to sit down in the classical position.

    The Korean made Dean guitars are actually very good guitars, I have a 2007 Dean Soltero that I bought 13 years ago brand new......The only thing crap about it was the same mini pots that the Dean in this video had, but I swapped those out a long time ago and also swapped the pickups for some alnico 2 PAFs and since then it plays and sounds like a dream 😎👍

    7:30 I just use a piece of electrical tape wrapped around the wires.
    Preferably you stick a piece of solid-core wire through the hole from the pickup, on the other end tape the wire to the pickup wire and pull the entire thing through the hole.

  • @evilcowboy
    @evilcowboy 3 года назад +1

    Well its better than my ML which is still being refinished. I got the guitar in 2005 January, it was a tribute guitar to Dime, fuckin stickers put on it with Dime's face and they weren't even clear coated into the guitar. It was what I later realized to be a cash grab guitar off the back of Dime's death.
    The problems were as follows, neck too wobbly in the pocket (its a bolt on), the finish had a crack going from the bridge post to the first screw on the pickup ring (after taking it apart yes the crack was in the wood too), shit pickups, dings and chips (I blame this on the shop), pots were shit and yes the knobs kept falling off, the route for the control cavity cover wasn't deep enough so the covers sat proud, bridge in the wrong position.
    The scale length sits at 24.5, I've heard 25 (PRS), 24 3/4 (Gibson) and 25.5 (Fender) so why its at a goddamn 24.5 when the fret spacing says it should be at 24 3/4 I'll never know.
    That is mostly why I had to take it apart and refinish and fix it. I am finishing it up now since I literally procrastinated over a decade about doing it. The intonation was absolute shit because of that scale length. Someone at Dean can't use a goddamn ruler. And before anyone asks no it couldn't be compensated by moving the saddles.
    So considering that I am literally rebuilding their fuck up then yeah Dean guitars suck and no I will never buy another one. Even had an Inspected by sticker on it who the person obviously didn't do their job. Right now I am in the middle of beveling the edges of the front by about 1/2 inch at a 25 degree angle to make it a little more comfortable to play and I am still thinking about doing a belly contour on the back.
    Basically I am just fixing Dean's monumental fuck ups and they are getting a pic of what I found and a pic of what it should have been. I did end up buying a Schecter so I had a guitar to play, they do good work and I didn't find anything wrong on their guitars. But Dean can go fuck off.

  • @jeremiahwilson6037
    @jeremiahwilson6037 6 лет назад

    I highly recommend Strap Loks (I like the Original Dunlop Strap Loks - but there are several good brands) to ANYONE buying a guitar that doesn't already have them. Like first upgrade before anything else. I can't stress it enough. When I first started playing years ago I almost lost many an axe (including a sweet Ferrari Red Gibson SG Special) to a strap popping off the cheap stock buttons. And Gibson (old Deans have even more tilt) guitars are notorious for snapping at the tilted back headstock from a strap coming off the cheap strap buttons. But any make and model of electric guitar needs strap loks right out the gate. Like I said...I almost had it happen to me. And I know several players where strap Loks would of saved the neck from snapping. It's a horrible feeling and a big bummer...buying a brand new axe and snapping the neck because you put off buying strap Loks. Trust me.
