  • Malone Bare-Roof Versarail Roof Rack System Install
    This is just a quick little tutorial how we transport our kayaks and the equipment we use to do so. In our system we use a brand called Malone's Bare-Roof Versarail Roof Rack and their J-Style Kayak Carriers. These are both used on our 2014 Nissan Frontier.
    Check out more information on the Malone Bare-Roof Versarail Roof Rack System via our website:

    When adjusting the straps inside you car is it possible to have the buckle connect on the passenger side or is it always gonna be in the middle? Probably a stupid question but I’ll double down with another: Do you think waterproofing spray would help alleviate straps wicking rainwater?

    I was thinking about buying a pickup truck just to have the convenience of throwing kayaks in the bed.

      Would highly recommend that plan, one of the rails spontaneously broke on me today when a truck passed me and caused a huge turbulence. Straight up caused the strap to break and the rail hanged off car

    Hi, first off, great video. I'm thinking in getting the Malone versarail. Do you recommend it?

      Thanks! We never had any issues using it at all and got the job done. Haven't used it in a while since we hit the road fulltime, but still sitting in storage haha

    Curious about the measurements. When choosing the rail length, is it the length of the actual rail, or the distance between the suction cups?

    • @DnSAdventures
      @DnSAdventures  4 года назад

      I believe it was the length of the rail, but if in doubt, they do have a fit my car section on their website that should help you out.

    Would I be able to cut the safety straps off? I want to put this on my camper shell that is on my ford ranger. The shell is a flat, level surface, but there are no windows on the side. I do not want to drill anywhere on my vehicle. I hope to hear from you!

      Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend it. The straps are also there for stability rather than just safety. The suction cups never came up while I was hauling the kayaks around, but the straps hold those suction cups down and keep the bars from sliding forwards and back due to the friction on the sides. Might be best to choose a different setup, but totally understand not wanting to drill. Best of luck! - Shane

    The extra rope from the hood is necessary or is for extra safety? I am planning to get this for my Mazda 6.

    • @DnSAdventures
      @DnSAdventures  5 лет назад

      I wouldn't say it is necessary, but definitely gives piece of mind when traveling down the road. Having those lines stiff helps prevent any sliding forward and back on those suction cups. If you are just heading a little bit down the road to go on an adventure, probably not really needed...but for longer trips I personally would feel safer having them on. These aren't the exact ones I got years ago, but they can give you something to strap on to if you don't have anything on the Mazda:

    Are the straps noisy when you travel??

    • @DnSAdventures
      @DnSAdventures  3 года назад

      They can be. I twist them around a bit to make it slightly less noisy. The straps holding the racks down themselves don't make much noise.

    Any problems removing the suction cups afterward? I just bought one and mine is stuck to the roof pretty well!

    • @DnSAdventures
      @DnSAdventures  5 лет назад

      They can be a little pain for sure. I just tried to pull the edge of them up to get air underneath them which can sometimes be easier said than done. I guess that is a good thing though right, don't want these babies flying off haha. Never tried this myself, but maybe a sturdy spatula could help get the air back under them from the side? Just gotta make sure you don't scratch the roof of the vehicle of course. Have a great weekend! - Shane

    I’m two years late, but if you somehow see this comment... How did this rack system hold when you went on the free way? If you went on the freeway, how fast were you driving? Thanks!

    • @DnSAdventures
      @DnSAdventures  5 лет назад +2

      Haha, never too late on videos like this! :) It honestly worked perfectly. We didn't hit up the interstate a ton, but when we did it held in place without issues. We drove the speed limit at 65-70. Just gotta make sure the straps are tightened properly and I would definitely recommend using bow and stern lines to just add that extra protection from front to back. Thanks for watching and have a good one! - Shane

    Were you able to put the end caps on the Versarail? They don’t fit for me and was looking to figure out if that is a common problem.

    • @DnSAdventures
      @DnSAdventures  6 лет назад

      Brian Kleiner Interesting, yea I don't remember having any issues with the end caps. Maybe Malone can send you some new ones?

      @b37train 6 лет назад

      Yah, I emailed them last week. I bought the rack from Dicks and then had to take it back because someone had the same problem and the caps were broken... I will wait to hear from them! Thanks!

    I normally just use duct tape! jkjk the rail rack looks great, thanks for the info. Do you do any white-water kayaking?

    • @DnSAdventures
      @DnSAdventures  5 лет назад

      Haha, that could work to a certain point! Just might be a little messy to clean up the sticky residue! :) If I were a bit of a better swimmer, I would consider it, but we mostly just stick to calmer rivers/ponds/lakes for a relaxing paddle. Thanks for watching sir! - Shane

    Great Vid! The Malone Versa Rail rack has a max capacity of 135lbs per their specs. Should I worry about hitting that weight limit with 2 kayaks and 4 Malone J loader supports?

    • @DnSAdventures
      @DnSAdventures  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching! We put a 13ft and a 11ft kayak on with no issues. Even if you had really long sea kayaks, I'm guessing you would be fine as well...unless they were made out of some heavier composite or metal material. Have a good one - Shane
