Have A Nice Death is a punishing but satisfying roguelike with some diabolically tough boss fights. The darkly dorky setting and office humor lend it more than enough charm to make me want to discover more of its world. But it's made significantly more frustrating than it probably needs to be by very stingy long-term progression and limited defensive abilities in comparison to its huge array of fun-to-use offensive weapons. When I wasn't feeling the discouraging void inside dragging me down, I was reveling in the hundreds of ways I could make these visually and mechanically memorable undead wish they never lived at all.

For a decent review I’ve never felt more like the reviewer absolutely hated this game by their tone.
If a reviewer ever says they "love a challenge and difficult games, but.." it's because they are bad anyways. 100 runs to even see the last boss? pretty insane

Can you please get someone to voice over this that doesn't sound like they're being put to sleep by their own voice.
Seems like a pretty solid roguelike. What really stands out to me is it’s bright and flashy visual effects. Also getting some Hollow Knight vibes from this one.

Just a heads up if it matters, skull face aside, the game does not feel or play anything like Hollow Knight

@samdelonggames This, and hopefully the bosses won't go from "That was Easy" to "Welcome to Dark Souls Git Rekd & Git Gud in 3 Seconds"... just watched the full review, and that might be a thing with the bosses, maybe not as bad. One of the few things that made me rage quit Hollow Knight was the difficulty curve just goes from 0 to 100 super quick and one boss just kept kicking my butt to the point it wasn't even fun anymore.
@@arcadeportal32 bro HK isnt that hard, u just have to unlock the skills to get stronger, all bosses except NK grimm, broken vessel and any radiance are easy asf

Having spent many years playing one of the OG rogue-likes, Nethack, not having significant persistent upgrades still seems perfectly acceptable to me.
Cuphead barely has upgrades and it’s amazing

Love the art style. It looks like a mixture of Limbo, Ori and the Blind Forest, and Samurai Jack.

All the Mori Calliope references in this are impressive. Leana Hafer is truly a dedicated deadbeat.

@@santiagomoralesgarcia1802 The game itself doesn't reference Mori Calliope, it's only this review which has a ton of references to her, like quoting her song names, lyrics, or the chapter titles literally just being Calli song.
Well, if you never actually jump in boss fights to dodge their attacks and walk around, the odds of beating a boss will decrease exponentially..

Sheesh. This is the second review I've seen that brings up the issue of progression and how even though the game is amazing to look at, playing it can be draining and at times even uninspiring.

You kept dying to the first boss? It took you a hundred runs to see the final boss? No wonder you sound bored and defeated.
Hear me out, the reviewer sounds like that to match the burnt out workplace tone the game has. Or atleast that makes this review funnier to me than it actually is.

Game journalists try not to complain about difficulty challenge. It's a rogue-like not a rogue-lite, so why complain about missing progression elements that persists after failure?
I've been playing the game all weekend and the progression doesn't feel bad at all. Maybe a tad slower than other games in the genre, but that's if I'm being nit picky. This one definitely is skill based compared to other rogue likes imo. You can get lucky with some weapons/spells, but if you just learn enemy movements you can make most builds work past the first boss or two easy.

You're going to see a lot of comparisons between this game and Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, etc. Trust me, this game is not even close to the quality of those. The art might make you think that it has depth elsewhere but it does not.
Dead Cells still remains the king of roguelikes imo

Besides the Sidescrolling aspect and dark art style it’s not very much like Hollow Knight, gameplay wise it’s honestly more mid range and special move based like Ori

100 attempts to meet the final boss? It took me like 6 tries to meet Enter the Gungeons final boss.

2x speed = SHAPIRO MODE

Is 1.0 gonna be really an improvement? Tried early access and doing mob is pointless just rush to the end level to get upgrade. Potion is extremely rare and food buff kinda useless too

It sounds like it would be a nice wait for some balance patches. About the review, it was pretty well written, but please put someone else to read them. This delivery takes all of the excitement out of the video.
