How the closeness of stance, a hand on another, a arm around waist or shoulder, longing or happy gazes between two, defied what was considered "the norm" in days gone bye. Thanks to these brave souls who created their "norm" when they could, inspite of a society that did not want to know them. We stand on the shoulders of mighty brave men and women. ♡♡♡
About eight of us were being posed on the steps of our dorm for a photo about no water! The hot guy behind me pulled up my tee shirt and began rubbing my back. This went on for several minutes. I let it continue. No one else knew. Great memory. BTW neither of us ever mentioned it again.
1959: Drake University Moorehouse dorm steps: Very hot young Iowan sat behind me on steps and put his hand under my tee shirt and kept rubbing my back. Heaven!
Photos like these remind you about mortality. All these people are no longer with us, yet, they were young, they were fit and enjoying life, just the same as us, but like them, one day we will no longer be here.
Exactly what I think as I look at these photos. These are split second records of a fleeting moment in the life of the men. We don't know anything about them except for this one still moment. And they are all dead. Once alive and vibrant, feeling pain and pleasure and anguish and joy...and all of it is long over with...and here we are...it's our turn to have these fleeting moments...and one day we will no longer be here and others will have taken the stage... Makes me remember: "Don't sweat the small stuff...it's all small stuff".

First, some may still be alive today. Hard to say. I hope that this is true and even moreso, hope that some of them are still with the same man, all their lives. I know... wishful thinking. As a Gay man, it warms my heart that "back in those days" there were some men with such courage as to have their pictures taken. They are the original trail blazers of Gay rights. So heart warming!

Often in challenging times, cognizant of our humanity, mortality etc. we realize how short life can be and how to be most supportive and loving. That alone forges all kinds of relationships, alliances and loving behaviors that might have otherwise never been.
The old adage that a picture conveys a thousand words..is so apt. Friendship,commaraderie and family. These images are Iconic and a bit bittersweet...thinking all these young lads might be gone. Thanks for the nostalgia.
Undoubtedly some of these photographs may be of gay men. But I have my father’s WW II photo album as well as his high school photos, and there are a great number of photos of my father and his brothers and their friends touching one another in ways which, to my gay eyes, look like intimate affection. But I knew some of these men my father had his arm around, and I know they were not gay. In the time before there was widespread awareness of “gay things,” I do believe that men were less self-conscious about showing affection to one another (except for gay men, who had something to hide and would have never been photographed in a “suspicious” situation). If anyone wants to “bash” me for thinking this, I am a seventy-year-old gay man who came charging out of the closet at eighteen, in the very year of Stonewall (which I didn’t hear about until a year later), so bash away!
You are right, most likely. Nevertheless it is wonderful to see men being affectionate towards each other. US-culture has taken a wrong turn in this respect somewhere after WW-II. Nowadays, even being friendly openly is suspect.

It's really quite sad that straight men these days cannot allow themselves to even the slightest intimacy in a friendly way with another man. Out of the fear of being perceived as gay, as if that would be something bad. And why does everything have to be black or white? If you're feeling 3% gay, why not allow that feeling to be there?
Thanks for sharing. I too wondered about how much easier it would have been to have affection from another man as a matter of fact in life rather than being afraid of other men. Most guys were afraid of me growing up and ostracised me. Maybe that is what made me gay, the desire to belong with those who had shut me out. It is sad to see this photo spread because I see bonds I'll never have.

About 25 years ago, I was explaining a work related plan among a lot of coworkers, to a guy I was attracted to, and felt compelled to put my arm around his shoulder while doing so. I thought, "fuck it," and did just that. I left my arm there all of 1 minute and I was kinda surprised when seconds later he put his arm around the back of my waist. It was just one of those moments in life that you remember years later.
Likely because in 2021, men cannot share closeness, as depicted in this pictures, without being labeled as "gay", or some other despicable and degrading term. This IS deeply sad, as half the population is "out of bounds" for males to seek comfort and love from.

I remember in the 60's my mother explaining to me that the word "gay" was misapplied. It was originally written as G.A.Y and stood for "Good.As.You". My mum wasn't well-educated but she had a loving heart and stayed abreast of the times in which she lived.

Men still enjoy camaraderie. We still see it expressed physically but mostly around sports groups. Men have a right to enjoy and express friendship without it being misconstrued as sexual.
But we also have a right to be romantically attached to other men, as long as it is reciprocated. At least, that is my opinion. Sometimes we make errors in this regard, but life has a way of teaching us...
This was great to see, but I must admit kind of sad they had to be so closeted. It is these men and many others after, who helped pave the way for the freedoms gay men have today.

Beautiful! They were free in themselves to document their love for posterity- despite the limitations of the era in which they lived. Whether only some were Gay relationships is not important to me. Clearly you can see an emotional intimacy between the men photographed- be it simply friends or indeed romantic as indeed most undoubtedly were. It really is a documented celebration of love between men- again be it hetero or homosexual. Very moving to behold.

Makes one wonder at what point did hyper masculinity ignite to the point where even best friends are not safe around society to show affection to each other without being judged as homosexuals? Women can still, to this day, express affection as friends without such judgment, but why can’t men? It should not be mistaken as a weakness. Showing affection to a friend takes a lot of courage and strength nowadays.
It would be nice if these photos were cleaned up and colorized like some other videos of old photos. Its sad to think they are all gone now. Maybe they continue on the other side as pals. I think that maybe some of them were brothers, or even father and son. Some the photos remind me of my fathers photo albums with his brothers taken together in the navy and Coast Guard during WWII. These photos would really look great colorized.

@@royedwards51 as a Gay man, i see many of these men as 'Gay' before it was a visible part of mainstream culture. But you are also correct in pointing out that culture in the 20c became increasingly intolerant of displays of sensitivity in men. That was specifically homophobic. The collateral damage was to straight men, but the primary attack was on Gay men. Valuing Gay men and their predominant characteristics is likely to mean more acceptance for the breadth of male behaviour/characteristics for all men. We already see this in young people today.
This just goes to show you, homophobia and the stigmatization of male affection is much more of a contemporary problem. If I had to guess it probably had a dramatic rise in the 1970s onward.
The 70s were relatively free compared to the more LGBT-hostile, religious and conformist 40s,50s & 60s. Jobs could be lost if knowledge of being gay was discovered; newspapers printed the mug shots and full names of men arrested in a gay bar raid. Famously, Alan Turing the brilliant mathematician who broke the Nazi military communication codes and in a major way helped the Allies’ victory. He was the man who originated the computer. He studied and taught at Princeton and other superstar universities. Nevertheless after WWII was won, the British legal system arrested him, later forced him to undergo estrogen treatments to cut his gay libido, enforced psychotherapy and hounded him to suicide. He’s only one publicly documented case of homophobic persecution. I’m old enough to remember the safety and joy of leaving the 1960s for the 70s. Sure things have improved every decade, but the 60s hippie free-love movement liberated gays too, first seen in the 70s in the US. in Canada Pierre Elliot Trudeau initiated the decriminalization of same sex acts. The 60s and 70s laid the basis for our current visibility and freedom in North America.
Many of these men might of been straight guys displaying affection.even relatives.like cousins and brothers.it's really hard to tell whether these men were straight or gay.At one time men weren't afraid to display non sexual affections not be threaten by it .What happen as sex got out in the open. Straight men began to fear that being affectionate might urn them into gays so they got cold.If the whole world was affectionate to one another there would be no more wars.

Particularly in a military or men's college situation where they were together closely day and night. But some definitely are not. Sometimes a seemingly buddy photo might have a detail that is likely to indicate something else, like the legs at 3:15.
These pictures must have been taken at the beginning stages of the invention of black people! Love is like the air, it’s everywhere, and we all need to have it. Rich or poor black or white, we mortals will dissolve into love, the spiritual solvent that created us.

All these people found love a hundred years ago with all the discrimination going on , and I couldn't find one person my whole life. Maybe it was just me.
Many times a couple of guys posed for pictures together, and expressed a friendship and affection for each other. Sailor "mates", but despite our wishful thinking, these photo's don't necessarily reveal a gay relationship. They sure are cute pictures tho.!
Some of the men judging by their body manerisms were obviously gay. Others appear to be straight-looking. What I was wondering was I only saw a couple of pictures where the men were inter-racial. So may be at that time there weren’t many couples who were Black and White or Latinos and Whites. But I always thought that different races found other races attractive. Even back in the 30s. But it was kept quiet.
My gaydar says virtually none of these men are gay. While the gay rights movement has done a lot of good, the worst aspect has been making straight men so isolated from one another intimately.

I am 64 and have a similar take on the world. We had to hide from the world and it was stressful.

It would be nice if these photos were cleaned up and colorized like some other videos of old photos. Its sad to think they are all gone now.
Maybe they continue on the other side as pals. I think that maybe some of them were brothers, or even father and son. Some the photos remind me of my fathers photo albums with his brothers taken together in the navy and Coast Guard during WWII. These photos would really look great colorized.

@@royedwards51 as a Gay man, i see many of these men as 'Gay' before it was a visible part of mainstream culture. But you are also correct in pointing out that culture in the 20c became increasingly intolerant of displays of sensitivity in men. That was specifically homophobic. The collateral damage was to straight men, but the primary attack was on Gay men. Valuing Gay men and their predominant characteristics is likely to mean more acceptance for the breadth of male behaviour/characteristics for all men. We already see this in young people today.

I think back then being friends and taking happy pictures together was what you did. They didn't consider straight or gay.

This just goes to show you, homophobia and the stigmatization of male affection is much more of a contemporary problem. If I had to guess it probably had a dramatic rise in the 1970s onward.

Jobs could be lost if knowledge of being gay was discovered; newspapers printed the mug shots and full names of men arrested in a gay bar raid. Famously, Alan Turing the brilliant mathematician who broke the Nazi military communication codes and in a major way helped the Allies’ victory. He was the man who originated the computer. He studied and taught at Princeton and other superstar universities. Nevertheless after WWII was won, the British legal system arrested him, later forced him to undergo estrogen treatments to cut his gay libido, enforced psychotherapy and hounded him to suicide. He’s only one publicly documented case of homophobic persecution. I’m old enough to remember the safety and joy of leaving the 1960s for the 70s.
Sure things have improved every decade, but the 60s hippie free-love movement liberated gays too, first seen in the 70s in the US.
in Canada Pierre Elliot Trudeau initiated the decriminalization of same sex acts. The 60s and 70s laid the basis for our current visibility and freedom in North America.
Many of these men might of been straight guys displaying affection.even relatives.like cousins and brothers.it's really hard to tell whether these men were straight or gay.At one time men weren't afraid to display non sexual affections not be threaten by it .What happen as sex got out in the open. Straight men began to fear that being affectionate might urn them into gays so they got cold.If the whole world was affectionate to one another there would be no more wars.
And many may have felt they were so self-evidently straight that no one could possible think they were queer.
@@MrCrowebobby Yes, many of these are likely to be buddies in a period when gay relationships weren't even thought of. Particularly in a military or men's college situation where they were together closely day and night. But some definitely are not. Sometimes a seemingly buddy photo might have a detail that is likely to indicate something else, like the legs at 3:15.

These pictures must have been taken at the beginning stages of the invention of black people! Love is like the air, it’s everywhere, and we all need to have it. Rich or poor black or white, we mortals will dissolve into love, the spiritual solvent that created us.

@@robsanders5808 it means that in the public reflection of civil society at a certain time in our American history, Black people and Homosexuals were under represented. My use of the word “invented” was my ironic way of expressing that observation over my 77 years of life so far.

It seems like they didn’t exist, if one were to observe early television or cinema. There was one Black man depicted in all of this montage of photographs. His image was the inspiration for my comment. If his image had been omitted I might have not noticed at all. Irony is my coping mechanism. I know that Black people and Homosexuals are not really an invention, and you should know that I know that, and be able to see beyond the chosen word into its intended meaning.

Many times a couple of guys posed for pictures together, and expressed a friendship and affection for each other. Sailor "mates", but despite our wishful thinking, these photo's don't necessarily reveal a gay relationship. They sure are cute pictures tho.!

Some of the men judging by their body manerisms were obviously gay. Others appear to be straight-looking. What I was wondering was I only saw a couple of pictures where the men were inter-racial. So may be at that time there weren’t many couples who were Black and White or Latinos and Whites. But I always thought that different races found other races attractive. Even back in the 30s. But it was kept quiet.
The majority of these photos appear to be father and son or brother and brother if you compare the facial features.
And some were gay... Move along.
My gaydar says virtually none of these men are gay. While the gay rights movement has done a lot of good, the worst aspect has been making straight men so isolated from one another intimately.
