However something simple like Tetris on Android where you only need to put up with a small ad banner if you don't pay I can deal with for a free game where i'm only killing a few minutes while at the doctors office waiting room, or something like that.

      Yup... Here are some stats for you all:

      Number of Switch = over 30 millions units sold worldwide
      Number of PC = immeasurable
      And they STILL cannot sell enough copies to meet expectations and revenues, to the point of taxing players with extra fees?

    • @DrBrainLock

      Some publishers have been cheaping out on Switch games by requiring a large download. This especially seems to happen with collections where they include one game on the cart and give you a download code for the rest. (Capcom has been bad with this!)
      You'll need to do your homework, I've passed on a few games I had interest in because I don't support such practices. If it's a physical release it should be complete on cart!

    Whenever a game doesn't seem to respect the player's time:
    - Unskippable cutscenes
    - Reloading the entire map when you die (or talk to an NPC!)
    - Slow animations (e.g., logo and title screen stuff, or attacks in some RPGs)
    - Excessive random encounters
    - No retry option, meaning you have to quit to menu and start again if you mess up
    - Anything else that prevents retries: needing to spend in-game currency every attempt, needing to wait X minutes before trying again, needing to slog through a bunch of levels every time, etc.

      @malice5121 So you dislike having a retry option in general, but feel that it is needed for certain games like Xenoblade 2?
      It's odd- I don't remember ever encountering a "retry" option in RPGs. Usually, you're stuck with whatever mistakes you made, until you either die or limp over to the next inn. And I'm generally fine with that.
      What I had in mind were difficult, fast-paced challenges, like in an action or racing game, where you can easily get into an unwinnable spot, and just want to restart without clicking around in menus and waiting 20 seconds to load back into the same level.

      I like achievements. They can add playability to a game and also keep a record about what you played and how much. One of my biggest pet peeves in gaming are "scripted loss" boss battles which give no indication of being such until after you've wasted a bunch of time and healing items trying to win a battle that you were never meant to win.
    An example of a scripted loss done right would be the first battle against Vile in Mega Man X; he has no lifebar like you would expect from a Mega Man game, and his attacks are so quick, powerful, and unavoidable that you can figure out fairly quickly that you never stood a chance of winning.

    I'm glad you guys did a show on gaming pet peeves. I have a few myself, and here's a big one for me I'd like to share: This one happens in games like "Mario 64," "Super Mario World," "Donkey King Country," both 1 and 2, and I'm sure 3 as well: You play through these games for awhile, making progress and collecting and earning 1-Up's one after the other. Then, you need to take a break. So, you Save and Quit. Later, you come back to the game to pick up where you left off at your last previous Save Point; you open your Save File, and there it is: all those extra lives you collected previously-GONE!!! All you have are the default 5 lives you start off the game with. With the Classic Systems now (except for the Nintendo 64 so far) this really isn't an issue anymore; since you can save any game at any time. But on the regular systems, this is pretty irritating to collect a bunch of extra lives, and then losing them because you need to take a break!

    The pixel perfect jumping section.
    Found: In any of a multitude of scrolling platfromers of the 80's and first half of the 90s. As you near the end of the game, you'll be used to jumping from the very edge of platforms so the developers will start to throw the pixel perfect ones into series of regular jumps that you have to complete in one go due to dropping or crumbling platforms or time pressure. At this point you'll probably have to restart the game from scratch since you'll have to use up lives to memorise the jumping patterns.

    One of mine is bad hitboxes. Even the best games do this! Like in Super Mario World, you can get inside most projectiles and enemies, and they won't damage you! And most games that do this are not consistent either. In Super Mario World, the fire spitting plants that spit 4 slowly falling fireballs, Mario/Luigi have to be in it to take damage. On the other hand, a Charging Chuck throwing baseballs, you touch it, you get hit. I like it when it is simple; if you got hit by it, you got hit by it, no matter what. That way, you know to trust that the objects presented are the what you should be avoiding.

    You definitely hit the nail right on the head with the drops of water. Not that anyone doubted you were going to mention that again in this episode! ;)
    One pet peeve I have that no one else seems to share is circle shadows. Back in the early days of gaming, I understand that it wasn't possible to have dynamic shadows, so using a black circle to represent someone or something's shadow was fine (though really good developers went with custom-shaped shadows instead, so that even if they weren't dynamic, they at least corresponded to their casters!). But in 3D gaming in particular, I feel like there's no excuse to use black circles as shadows -- again, even if you can't quite harness enough processing power for dynamic shadows, at LEAST make them person-shaped if a person is casting them, bird-shaped if a bird is casting them, etc.! It's not that hard to draw a black outline of a thing!
    And honestly, even in some 2D games, it bugs me -- particularly in a lot of Capcom and Capcom-inspired fighters, where the shadows aren't just circular, they're MASSIVE and FLASHING. As if to draw your attention to them and say, hey, look, these shadows look NOTHING AT ALL like the people who are casting them!
    I know it's a minor gripe, but it definitely is something that's bugged me for many years whenever I encounter it. And I always applaud games that take the time to do shadows right -- back in the early PS2 era, I remember being super-impressed with Dark Cloud's shadow-rendering engine, and quite disappointed with Soul Reaver 2's.

    • @Retrovibes
      @Retrovibes 5 лет назад

      Flickering shadows, especially common in 2D fighters, was just a way of faking partial transparency. Back in the day, it did the job on old screens and arcade machines.

    • @3dmarth
      @3dmarth 5 лет назад

      Wouldn't a person-shaped shadow basically be an oval, anyway, since it's being cast straight down?
      Otherwise, though, I get it. Minor gripe, but it's hard to excuse anything from the PS2 onward, seeing as even some N64 games were doing proper shadows.

    • @Wyrdwad
      @Wyrdwad 5 лет назад

      @@3dmarth A person-shaped shadow is never a perfect oval -- usually it'll at least be an oval with two smaller ovals juxtaposed on the ends for arms, which is something I've seen a couple times before and am totally OK with.
      But yes, it is a minor gripe indeed. Just always been something that bugged me.

    • @3dmarth
      @3dmarth 5 лет назад

      @@Wyrdwad Interesting- I don't remember ever seeing that in a game before. Can't see that approach making much of a difference, though.
      The Zelda games on N64 took a very different approach to the same issue, come to think of it: one fake shadow for each leg.

    One of my pet peeves is when there's no invincibility or anything, and thus enemies can just combo you into oblivion with you not being able to do a thing to avoid it. The Legend of Spyro series had that problem until the third game, which is pretty bad to see. It's a series that I want to get into, though I know not many people actually like it. I personally enjoyed A New Beginning, aside from getting comboed to death by mooks.
    As for unskippable cutscenes, well, I'd like more if they weren't outright skippable if I'm playing a game for my first time. Unskippable cutscenes are more of a pain for me if I'm replaying a game, but some games allow you to pause the cutscenes, then gives the option skip them while paused, which is pretty much what I prefer.

    I've got one. In a typical platformer you are given a lot of extra lives in earlier levels, so by the time you get to the last part of the game you have a healthy number of lives for when the levels get hard and you need them. Now, in a bunch of Super Nintendo platformers like Mario World, Yoshi's Island, and the entire Donkey Kong Country series, they had a save feature. Only problem was, if you were near the end of the game and had a ton of lives, then saved and quit, when you started again all the extra lives you collected would be gone and you'd have just four or five lives you started the game with, just when you actually started needing them.
