I used to think it was great, childhood nostalgia. But yes, emulating in recent years, and also playing NES ones, has the Master System games, a lot but not all, sounding like shrieks and bells and whistles.
Thanks for another amazing video!! Btw, "Hang On" was also released on a multi-cart with "Safari Hunt" as well as the one you mentioned. Also worth mentioning that "Satellite 7" have 2player co-op, and that raise the gaming experience quite a bit in my opinion.

What's crazy is I didn't know the Master System existed until I visited this channel a few months ago. I always thought "Master System" was just the name for the Japanese Sega Genesis. An excellent list. Several of my favorites here. In defense of Kenseiden, the repetitive segments you brought up are training stages designed to grant powerful awards based on flawless play. I'm not trying to invalidate your criticism, but it is important to frame these training rounds in the right context.

NES was bigger where it went first… in places like Australia, Europe and Brazil, where they came about the same time, the SMS was equal or bigger than the NES.
The Nes was 20 times bigger in the US, but there is a big reason why. Nintendo ran an illegal licensing scheme here that essentially starved the competition. Had it not been for Atari going to war (legal battle), Nintendo would have never relinquished their illegal hold on the market. I believe Sega would have absolutely killed Nintendo here had they not illegally locked down the industry. The Master System was a far more capable system, and at the time, we Americans were very much lovers of great graphics. When the Sega Genesis released it had little trouble running over Nintendo for most of the 4th generation. From 1989- the very beginning of 1995 Sega was the defacto leader of the 16-bit Revolution. They lost when Sega of Japan decided to stupidly pull the plug on the still selling Sega Genesis. The Snes became the only budget console in America and finally overtook Sega. They couldn't do it while USA Sega was still rocking.
I have a warm place in my heart for the Master System! I always will. Funnily enough I traded my NES for my Master System at a pawn shop initially. At first I had regret until I found a Kay-Bee toys that had tons of games on sale. One of which was Phantasy Star. Yup, our crew were legendary gamers. I still love the hobby all these years later!
Some of my favourites are Alien3, Phantasy Star, California Games II and Captain Silver. In my opinion the SMS version of Captain Silver is tons better than the arcade version, something you don't see very often in an arcade port at the time. The YM2413 chip did the console a lot of justice. If only we can have that FM music applied to every game. I'm keen to know what the sound chiptunes for the Illusion trilogy would sound like with this hardware upgrade.
Wow! Great video SLX! Glad to see the 8-bit Sega Master System get some more love and attention. I love Bomber Raid and glad that got a mention, it plays so much like a Toaplan shooter on the Mega Drive and the SMS version of Double Dragon is the best port of the game in my opinion. Respect your opinion but have to disagree with you on what the best era of Master System was, definitely would have to be 1989 to 1994. The early stuff from 1985 to 1991 I always found far too difficult where after a few tries I got sick of repeating the same thing over and over. My only minor gripe with the video is that you left out a lot of better, later titles and focused a little too much on the early hard repetitive stuff. You left out (Laser Ghost, Alien Storm, Shadow Dancer, Tom & Jerry, Lemmings, Back To The Future III, Sega Chess, T2 The Arcade Game, Global Gladiators, Cool Spot, Rambo III, Outrun Europa, The Jungle Book, Alex Kidd The Lost Stars, Dynamite Dux, Dynamite Duke, Tecmo World Cup 93, Tennis Ace,). Still a great and enjoyable video and thank you for making it. ❤
The nostalgia I got just from watching this video... wow! Takes me back to some great memories. Do you have a video featuring the Dreamcast? One if my favorite consoles of all time. Let's get Ready to Rumble was my favorite game on that system.
MS was my first console. The first of so many. I had wonderfull memories of that time. In France and Europe, Sega had a solid run with it challenging the NES. it looks like you forgot somes good games that we had in the late days such as populous, pacmania, Danan and submarine attack. I am sure there are many others. YOu purposely forgot a couple of catastrophic alex kidd episodes. thanks
Nice one SLX... Great timing too for self therapy for today. Best wishes. If retro games are help with your depression you damn well keep playing people! (Bit of zero wing engrish there lol...)
At least from a graphical standpoint, the Master System was clearly superior to the NES. It's amazing how much better games look on the system in comparison. I'd love to be able to play some of tthe old NES classics with Master System-quality graphics.
When I was a kid there was 2 opportunities to get a Master System but my Nintendo fanboy ways didn't do it. I picked one up after highschool and I really wish I experienced the games back when they were new. I really like the SMS
It will always have a semi love thanks to the Regular Show community at least! I grew up with this as we didn't really have an NES or any Nintendo product until way later on and my mom had this weird thing about Nintendo so we were always a Sega household The Master System while we only had about 30 games was very fun to play and when the Genesis finally came to our house we were very ready to embrace that as part of a very nice childhood
Regular Show quickly became one of my fave animated shows after showcasing SEGA Master System, rather than a Nintendo console which would have been a safer reference. but no, the creators were different and they stood proud on the SMS.
The heck did Nintendo do to you're mom😂 The hell are you just gonna gloss over that without explaining it, did a Nintendo employee plow into the side of you're house, lol.
I hope they include the Mark III version of Enduro Racer on the Master System mini. It's one of the best pick-up-n-play games on the console, imo. The fibr additional levels would be great.
These videos are going to be really helpful building a Sega Saturn collection in the future. Now only to decide which random promotional version of the Saturn I want lol.
I was a SEga kid growing up. All of my friends had NES, but I wanted a SMS. SMS wasn't my first game console - that was the Atari 5200 - but it was the first one that I got new (the Atari 5200 was bought for me from a yard sale). I actually didn't own a Nintendo console until the Gamecube launched and I was an adult by then. I have so many great memories of all of my Sega consoles and games, but it all started with my Master System.
SMS was my console of choice as a kid. My mom met the owner of the local distribution company and secured a bunch of Master System games for me and my brother. I even had the 3D glasses, which effectively created depth and made the games more engaging. Wonder Boy series is my favorite.
Great selection of games! I love the Illusion series and the Wonder Boy games, but the licensing would probably prevent either series appearing on a new release 😔 On the subject of license games; I did like ghostbusters, but it always felt more like a computer game than a console game to me
i guess that i can see that. i had a lot of fun with Ghostbusters, even dying on purpose at Stay Puft so that i could amass a large wealth of over $5 Million.
Three easy recomendations that you missed are Buggy Run (racing), Masters of Combat (1 on 1 fighting) and Put & Putter (mini golf). All great games that I never saw anyone mentioning.
Nice bro nice when i start school, my parents brought me and my brother a master system 2. I love this system and never get in touch with a NES since i was 18 or so. Thanks for making this Videos about the Master system. SUBSCRIBE
I'm in search of collecting master system again. Any suggestions for place to buy here in Dallas or north Texas area? I'd prefer to buy in person to inspect everything vs Ebay. Any help is greatly appreciated
Sega master system was also my first console back in like 86. I was a broke kid though, and I only got to play some of these games, but I’m seeing a few that I never thought the console was capable of that I wish I had, like that Donald Duck game, prince of Persia, and Power Strike! Instead, I got stuck with that Transbot, which was a game that I was compelled to find out it had no ending by playing it over and over for hours until I gave up, lol
There's just something about 8 bit games that keep me coming back. They all have so much style and creativity. At least now we can use cheats to overcome the lack of modern QoL features.
I grew up with an Nes Clone called Phantom System, but I had prior contact to the Sms at a cousins place. Being from Brazil, it was really easy to spot it at rental places. I know the Nes had some solid games, but I was kinda jealous of the Sms bc of its amazing colors. I really like the Disney's games on the Sms...
This was the first console i ever had. My brother brought it from London to use in ireland and we had never even heard of home game consoles. Hang on and Duck Hunt were the pre installed games. The console that started it all for me
@17:18 I remember spending hours playing Zillion and when it was time to pause the game to eat, I pressed the reset button by accident. That was the last time I played the game. I hate the SMS having the reset and pause next to each other.
Have you done a video on games that have both a Master System and NES version and compare them? I think it would be interesting. The Master System version is better in a lot cases, notably Choplifter and Rampage.

I would love for Sega to release a Master System collection for modern consoles. As this video proves there are plenty of great games to choose from.
MS was my first console. The first of so many. I had wonderfull memories of that time. In France and Europe, Sega had a solid run with it challenging the NES. it looks like you forgot somes good games that we had in the late days such as populous, pacmania, Danan and submarine attack. I am sure there are many others. YOu purposely forgot a couple of catastrophic alex kidd episodes. thanks
Great vid! Cant wait for the other 200
Nice trip down memory lane. Thanks! Also a reminder that i need to track a few of these down still
God damn imagine an alternate universe nowhere the master system got the stuff the nes got.. including marketing.
Nice one SLX... Great timing too for self therapy for today.
Best wishes.
If retro games are help with your depression you damn well keep playing people!
(Bit of zero wing engrish there lol...)
Thanks for the comment and I hope your day goes well.
I have my original Master System my parents got me Christmas 86 and it still works with the 3d glasses too
I have literally zero recollection of the Master System, and that’s a shame. Thanks for the video on this underrated console
that is a shame indeed.
I'd love an sms mini just to display how great the console is to the modern audience.
It's awesome you used the FM audio versions!

MASTER SYSTEM
Great Stuff, as always!
I needed something to focus on other than my 12pm web ex lol ty as always, Man!
You're welcome. Thanks for stopping by and watching it.
Woooop heck yes. My personal favourite is the Japanese version of THE NINJA it had extra levels
Master System was bigger in the UK than the NES. I personally owned a NES though.
My childhood and still joint favourite with ps1.
It will always have a semi love thanks to the Regular Show community at least! I grew up with this as we didn't really have an NES or any Nintendo product until way later on and my mom had this weird thing about Nintendo so we were always a Sega household
The Master System while we only had about 30 games was very fun to play and when the Genesis finally came to our house we were very ready to embrace that as part of a very nice childhood
How could you not like Enduro Racer. Are you rembering to tap down on the D-pad as soon as you touch a ramp? It makes all the difference.
Brilliant video! Thanks for doing this
Very popular here in Brazil. I have 2 models, Master System 1 and Master System 3.
I have so many great memories of all of my Sega consoles and games, but it all started with my Master System.
hell yeah almost 100 titles? let's go! my very first Console, love to see it talked about, especially on a positive note.

SMS was my console of choice as a kid. My mom met the owner of the local distribution company and secured a bunch of Master System games for me and my brother. I even had the 3D glasses, which effectively created depth and made the games more engaging. Wonder Boy series is my favorite.
Love your videos man. Maybe 1 day when I recover and I'm back up north We can share a beer.
There are some great games on the Master System.
Thank you for making this list, I know what to add to my retro pie setup
Ghostbusters!
Great selection of games!
I love the Illusion series and the Wonder Boy games, but the licensing would probably prevent either series appearing on a new release 😔
On the subject of license games; I did like ghostbusters, but it always felt more like a computer game than a console game to me
i guess that i can see that. i had a lot of fun with Ghostbusters, even dying on purpose at Stay Puft so that i could amass a large wealth of over $5 Million.

Three easy recomendations that you missed are Buggy Run (racing), Masters of Combat (1 on 1 fighting) and Put & Putter (mini golf). All great games that I never saw anyone mentioning.
I got this saga master system when I was 8 how old am i now? 10 internet points rewarded
Great timing I'm about to clean house and this will be perfect in the background
Nice bro nice when i start school, my parents brought me and my brother a master system 2.
I love this system and never get in touch with a NES since i was 18 or so.
Thanks for making this Videos about the Master system.

I'm in search of collecting master system again. Any suggestions for place to buy here in Dallas or north Texas area? I'd prefer to buy in person to inspect everything vs Ebay. Any help is greatly appreciated
I havent watched the whole video but im sure im going to love it
Sega master system was also my first console back in like 86.
I was a sega master system kid ❤
Are the 3d master system game reviews here all new? I dont remember hearing them before.
A very pleasant suprise
Still loving it in Brazil. Cheers!
I discovered the master system by being curious about the video game console in Regular Show.
The console that started it all for me
Epic video thanks.
@17:18 I remember spending hours playing Zillion and when it was time to pause the game to eat, I pressed the reset button by accident. That was the last time I played the game. I hate the SMS having the reset and pause next to each other.
Despite its small library of games, the Master System is my favourite console. My favourite Sonic too.
The Ninja is my fond and enduring memory of the SMS. Rastan as well.
Wait, Master System Mini?!
I found California Games better on the SMS than the Genesis strangely.
Have you done a video on games that have both a Master System and NES version and compare them? I think it would be interesting. The Master System version is better in a lot cases, notably Choplifter and Rampage.
