    I've experienced every single point you made. But what really tics me off is the people that message me for prices of a cake. I have to explain that I will need a day to cost-out the price. I use to just look at a pic and say, "oh, I can do it for....." Not anymore!! I take my time and really try to charge accordingly (but I still think I under-charge for my work.) Only to have them say, " thats too much". AND I KNOW IM NOT CHARGING THE PRICE THAT I SHOULD BE CHARGING!
    I have even had someone ask me if they could purchase a cake from a grocery store and then they wanted me to decorate it to match a pic they have. "Ahhh, no ma'am, I don't work behind other bakers. I am an all or nothing baking
    b!&#$!!!!!!"

    • @KarolynsKakes

      I agree, I always have to sit with the picture and figure out what it will take to make it. Even cakes I've done in the past, I don't remember how much they were!
      And I have had a few people ask the same thing about giving me a cake to decorate. Ummmm, ask THAT bakery to decorate it for you! 🙄

    Or the time that my friend who runs a store front bakery with lots of overheard post pictures of a cake with the same exact design I have set for a order for the same name and age and I ask the customer "did you double order a cake from X place and also from me?" Silence and then "ya but your half the price so I am just not going to get it from X place!" ...... Umm that's not how this works, yes I have my business but X place does too and actually the bakers world is kind of like a candy land where everyone knows everyone and X place is owned by a close friend, her prices are based on employees, overhead and time and materials. She does not have another full time job this is her only bread and butter and we do not do that to each other in the bakery world so I respectfully decline your order and you will keep your order with X place."

    Hi Karolyn,
    I hope you don’t mind giving me insight and share your experience with me on how to get customers pay on time. Besides cakes, I also sell cookies and other dessert items.
    I used to accept orders for items like cookies, bread and such (not a cake though), meet up with customers and get paid by cash during the pick up. However, there were time a few customers decided not to show up and I ended up with items unsold.
    Because of these incidents, I decided to take a full payment online before booking anyone. Even that, I had to follow up with my customers about their late payment. I am frustrated because I will set aside items for them and then do not get paid on time. I am tired of sending them a payment reminder.
    What should I do or what have I done wrong? I love my customers, I love baking but sometime I feel like quitting. Thank you so much.

    • @KarolynsKakes
      @KarolynsKakes  2 года назад +2

      It has happened to me and it really sucks. I used to accept cash at pickup, but no longer because I have been ghosted after cakes were completely finished. I finally took control and put strict rules in place. So my policy is I take a $50 deposit to hold a spot and the balance MUST BE PAID IN FULL 10 days prior to pickup / delivery or I will not make the cake. If they really want it, they will pay on time. And just be stern and let them know that if it isn't paid in full by a certain time, you won't be fulfilling their order. If they don't like that policy, let them go elsewhere. They were probably going to be flaky anyway.

    I'm new to cakes...but for years I've been a crafter and wreath maker making very elaborate wreaths. Some have lots of ribbon, they may have huge bows, or multiple small ones or both, lots of embellishments or florals, or be VERY minimal with with the sign as the focus and can be made on many different wreath forms and sizes...for years people have asked me...how much for a wreath? Ummm...that is determined by so many factors and remains to this day one of my most dreaded questions. So I'm sure it will be as I delve into cakes as well. I can't post photos but if you are interested AT ALL in seeing them I'm on Candy's Craft Room on FB...but I'm looking forward to cakes and have been totally binge watching you!! I also love it when a customer requests a really strange combination of cake and frosting flavor and then they tell me that they don’t really eat cake so they’re not really sure and I asked my opinion and I let them know that I would not suggest pairing those two favors together but then they tell me they want to do that anyway😂

    I think when people ask for a cake much larger than they need they want the artistry and size. They don’t care if there’s extra cake.

    Actually, NO, not making cake. I’m planning on making a meatloaf. Meatloaf!! That just brought me right back to All In The Family 😂. Archie calling Mike… “Hey Meatloaf”!!

    They kill me with the sizes.
    Someone straight came to me saying they wanted a 2 tier 10 inch / 12 inch.
    Upon further questioning they only needed it for 30 people 😂😂😂
    Like, why just randomly throw out sizes that you know nothing about 😂

    You could do a dummy cake in the design they'd like and then offer other options (cupcakes, sheet cake, etc.) for the number of servings...

    • @KarolynsKakes
      @KarolynsKakes  2 года назад +1

      The only thing with that is that a dummy cake still takes the same amount of time to decorate. I personally don't offer that just because I don't think it saves a lot of time. Have you had success with it?

    • @Mairiain
      @Mairiain 2 года назад +1

      @@KarolynsKakes Yeah, it works pretty well. You don't have to add in the time to bake and cool the cake tiers; it's just the time to decorate the dummy tiers. I let them know that they will still have a charge for the time to decorate the dummy cake, but they're not paying for the cake part, so it's a little bit less expensive (little being the important word). You don't have to go all out on the sheet cake or cupcakes, either (I usually suggest doing that since it saves them money). Not everyone wants to go that route, but around half want to do that.

    Some people say "whatever the cheapest option is lol" which I honestly prefer rather than giving a price then going in circles when they try to reduce it by suggesting all sorts
