This comprehensive Sonic disc offers amazing value for the money. The dizzying amount of bonus content and the excellent quality ports of the first four Sonic games make this well worth checking out, even 20 years after its release.
Iirc the first time I ever played this one was around the time the Dreamcast came out. And at least Sonic doesn't shatter a backboard or catch on fire :)
@NintendoComplete, @1:59, I SERIOUSLY just wouldn't believe that the "Blue Blur" in this game is age 16, I mean, look at him, he looks more like he's age 8😑. WTF?
Wait one second, these bios on Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, etc. They're rip offs of Mega Man & Bass's bios. You got your, good point, bad point, likes and dislikes.
Well it was obvious after the debacle that was Sonic X-treme this was the next best thing to filling that Sonic "void" for the Saturn, and come 1997 outside of Japan the Saturn was on life-support that year, but it's ironic that they finally DID manage to get a half-decent 3d-engine running on the Sega Saturn...and with the Dreamcast not far away with more horsepower naturally Sonic Team/Sega were more focused on that than giving the Saturn a show-case Sonic title..
Hands down one of my favorite Sonic compilations to date! I just love the Sonic World! It's a fun little 3D environment to explore, getting everyone hyped up for that 3D Sonic game that sadly didn't happen until Sonic Adventure since Sonic Xtreme's unfortunate cancellation. Looking at all the concept art and old trailers and commercials and stuff is just awesome too! And, of course, let's not forget the inclusion of the Genesis games, that's WAY-Y-Y-Y PAST COOL, too! ^-^ Awesome!!~
A compilation of ports/remasters of games from a previous generation, long before it was a common practice :D And it was a really good one. (True, there was the Ninja Gaiden trilogy on the SNES some years prior already, while I don't count Super Mario All-Stars because those were remakes) Every now and then I happen to read again about what happened with Sonic X-treme, a maddening combination of bad management and pure bad luck.
In some way or another, Sonic Jam seems to be quite the prequel of all Sonic-related game collections. Even the credits are in a similar, altough not yet so colorful way.
Amazing play through. I never owned a Sega Saturn but I have rented the console back in 1996 with my older cousin. But this is the first time after 21 years to see the entire play through. The Sounds in Sonic 1 2 3 and Knuckles is very different from the Genesis on Saturn
The Intro And Ending Sequence From Sonic CD Was Also Used From The 2005 Playstation 2 And Nintendo GameCube Complication Videogames Sonic Gems Collection At The 16:22 And 17:53 But The Japanese Version From Soundtrack Are Replaced By North American Version From Soundtrack
16:12 this compilation should have had Sonic CD (the actual game) on it even if on a second disc, *with* these higher quality FMVs (but with the final version of the soundtrack, not the beta one as here)
Hey, NintendoComplete! You should do a playthrough of Sonic 3D Blast someday. I recommend playing the Sega Genesis port of that game. Fun fact: The music for the Genesis port was composed by Jun Senoue who would later go on to be the sound director for Sonic Adventure.
@@NintendoComplete And they don't even bother to made Sonic CD as a remake disc on Saturn or just made a port with a better spin dash in this Jam collection is just…giving it up on Saturn!
@@Nestalgba92023 I said in another comment that the actual Sonic CD game should have been in this, but now it's occured to me that it would have to have been on 2 discs.
Over 1hr 40mins: you have some patience! Brings back some bittersweet memories. Sonic games were great on the MD/Genesis, but never really worked in 3D. Shame Sega didn't do a 2D game on the Saturn, given its 2D prowess. Really could have had a great depth of perspective including zooming out when the going gets fast and zooming in for the slow, tricky bits. Oh well, I appreciate the time and effort taken for this vid!
Np! :) I think that with a lot more polish this could've been turned into a really cool 3D game, but yeah, considering what they did on the GBA, I would've loved to see what the Saturn could do if they pushed its 2D abilities with Sonic. The super aggressive push for 3D really killed chances for a lot of cool stuff that we might've seen otherwise. And maybe the Saturn would've survived a bit longer :(
Unfortunately, while the PS1-Saturn-N64 era was one of big leaps forward and big changes, it was also the age of the obsession with 3D at all costs, it was the future, everything had to be 3D, and it wasn't rare to see scoffs at 2D as just a past to forget (at least on home systems, since on portables it still thrived of course). I recall horror stories of publishers and even some people in Sony and Sega's managements actively disfavoring 2D games. On PC, a sad era of video cards arms race was kickstarted. Castlevania SOTN and Rayman were among the few exceptions, and even the latter switched to 3D with the sequel a few years later, while the former would make several attempts with 3D on home consoles with very mixed results. So, it's hard to blame Sega for deciding to go the way of 3D for a Saturn Sonic.
Yeah, the 2D to 3D shift in home consoles was a sudden change. Sega lead in the arcades but to bring that quality of 3D into the home wasn't possible at the time. So we had this hybrid console, the Saturn, which was complex. If you study its hardware you'll see was it crazy powerful for the time but that power was spread over multiple processors - programmers weren't used to this. Plus it was best programmed in assembly (I understand that some features weren't available using C). It had more stable textures and a form of perspective correction which the PS didn't have, so it wasn't devoid of 3D features! It has some useful tools for 3D rendering, which the PS didn't have. It's amusing to think how the Saturn's 2 CPU's flummoxed people at the time; PS4, Xbox One use 8 cores. But the simple, more 3D orientated PS won the day.
Was that animated Sonic short made by Warner Bros.? At least the people remind me of the Stephen Spielberg Presents... line of cartoons they made in the 90s
I didn’t even know there was any Sonic games on the Saturn period, thing was so lacking in its first party stuff no wonder nobody talks about it compared to Genesis and Dreamcast.
Gabe Puratekuta Its true. I didn’t even know that the Sega Saturn actually existed when I was a kid. I assumed that the Dreamcast was the next generation Sega Console after Genesis.
Everyone talks about how good this game is but all the ports (especially sonic 2) have annoying stuttering throughout. The Japanese version is slightly better the the US version.

It's amazing how ahead of its time this game was because collection types games didnt become common until the 6th and 7th generation of gaming

Sega re-released a lot of Mega Drive and arcade games for the SS, but most never left Japan.
That stop motion plasticine sonic from the commercials was nightmare fuel!
Nah it was sick
I just thought it was fun to watch sonic dancing and funny to look him at the same time. Also, it’s cool that Sega put those commercials in sonic jam
The music is so relaxing.
Luis Lizano it’s to calm you down from realizing you bought a digital artbook as a video game

2:56 knuckles is younger than sonic??? I never knew. I thought sonic was 15-16 and knuckles was 16-17
You heard it here first from Sonic Team

Let’s be honest sonic Jam on Sega Saturn is the definitive way to play the classic sonic games
The only good Sonic game on the Saturn, and its the first 4 Games on a Disc.
3D Blast is pretty good too, specially those special stages. which uses the same engine and models from Sonic Jam.

Sonic CD was planned to be ported to Saturn in 1996.
Also, SOA had a 3D Sonic game planned for it that same year called "Sonic Stadium" or Sonic Pool.
Was that animated Sonic short made by Warner Bros.? At least the people remind me of the Stephen Spielberg Presents... line of cartoons they made in the 90s
The Short was produced by TMS Entertainment, who later was brought out by SEGA, ironically.
TMS did the animation for Tiny Toons and Animaniacs.
