Here's a thought: Why can't Sega partner with Arcade1UP, translate the game to English, then sell it as a mini arcade cabinet? Arcade1UP utilized the trackball before.
I'd love that. I dunno if Mame licenses their work out for commercial purposes, though. It's the only emulator to play System 32 stuff, isn't it? And even then, Mame's emulation isn't quite perfect yet.
That would actually be a great idea. But Arcade1Up might have to make it look like the TMNT and upcoming NBA Jam cabinets (because it makes use of 3 players instead of two)
@@NintendoComplete Maybe, but IIRC Sega wanted to release this game overseas for quite some time; they just didn't know what to do with the trackball since it's hard to emulate even with modern technology. Heck, there's even unused sprites of SatAM Robotnik (and boy is he UGLY!), so they were so close! Also, Archie Comics referenced this game, so there's some hype for it.
@@NintendoComplete I'm not sure MAME is the only emulator because I believe I've seen System 32 emulators other than MAME. Anyway, Arcade 1Up are doing a SEGA cabinet with 5 games I think and one of them is Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder which is a System 32 game.
That ending credit music is fire. Let's face it, Sonic 1 through Sonic & Knuckles has some of the best music ever composed for a video game in my honest opinion.
I actually got to play this at Galloping Ghost arcade just outside Chicago. This game used to be a personal favorite of mine; the wacky graphics and music fit Sonic very nicely.
Interesting fact: The cancelled North American port of this game was going use the likeness of Robotnik that was seen in both SatAM and Sonic Underground instead of Eggman.
Wow, I think I've heard about this game, but I'm glad I finally got to see it in action. I love how frantic it was, and the graphics are really appealing. And the thought of using a roller ball to control the character really takes me back. Thanks so much for sharing this!
This feels like it takes place early in Sonic's life, perhaps just after Sonic 1. Just look how panicked he is at the beginning of Landslide Limbo. He's got the skills, but perhaps not all the confidence he gets in later games.
And given Mighty and Ray weren’t seen with Sonic again, I think Sonic might have grown a big ego after the experience; feeling like he could take on the world. Enough to alienate the other two and leaving him to fend against Eggman alone in Sonic 1.
A rare instance where a trackpad might actually make an interesting substitute for a mouse if given enough rolling friction. I might have to bust out my Steam Controller for it!
1993 : *Credits roll* Ray & Mighty : "What about us now?" Sonic : "Don't worry. We'll see you again in 2018." Ray & Mighty : "How ?" Sonic : "I have a good feeling about this."
Personally I adore the OST for this game, Stage 2, 3, and 4 are my favorites, really has that Sega Twang. Also it'd probably trivialize the difficulty and gameplay but a port with normal analog controls would be pretty cool, I dig this game, Sonic and Co. have adorable sprites and the game has a very clean and 90s aesthetic, I'd love if they gave the UI a touch of Mania's aesthetics actually.
My parents were in the U.S. Navy and I was in Italy in the early/mid 90's. When I moved back to the states and told new friends about playing this game in the arcade they thought I made it up.
We got 3d blast instead of this weird gem? The controls would've been an inconvenience, but this looks a whole lot more interesting than what we got for an isometric sonic title.
This game really shows Eggman's style and what he's all about, he doesn't just want to kill Sonic, he also wants to beat and defeat Sonic, make the hedgehog KNOW he lost
Would love to see a company like arcade1up or something do some kind of port to an arcade unit with this. You never hear about it, and I'd be kinda fascinated to see it in some actual physical capacity, although mame seems like a not ideal, but decent way of playing this too.
I think this would be a perfect game for M2 to make a Sega Ages release for the Switch. The touch screen can be used to replicate the rolling controls (similar to Pac N Roll) and/or they could adapt the controls to fit console play. Online play would be cool too if they ever did re-release this.
It’s a real shame that this never got any sort of release on systems anywhere. Not even on PCs, a system that actually HAS mice capable of replicating this control scheme!
Sega's arcade games always looked amazing when they came out. They were some of the best looking videogames of their time, truly amazing. There was a time when arcade machines just looked 10x better than the consoles, you simply couldn't get the best quality graphics at home in the early 90s. That only changed really when the likes of the Dreamcast/PS2/Xbox came along.

Gotta love that they all have the same body, just with different colors.
No one: “.......”
Sonic: “WAAAAAaaaaaaahhhh”
Screams like Goku in the Japanese version
-_-
わぁ!
What i said? i dont know
Here's a thought: Why can't Sega partner with Arcade1UP, translate the game to English, then sell it as a mini arcade cabinet?
@@IndysGameplayVids Not to mention Mighty and Ray in Sonic Mania.
The fact that people think mighty is fanmade just goes to show how little sega cares about him
I watched a playthrough of this game, 3 player and not using a trackball...
Umm...i'm gonna say that it was quite the ride...."WWAAAAAAAA!!!"
I imagine it would be much faster if you could run at full speed the entire time, and probably even harder.
It's amazing... imagine playing this at an arcade with friends
ITS arcade
Chaos
I bet Sonics stress level was through the roof
Not as much as mine during school
17:34: Me at any social event
I really want to see a Sega Ages port of this to modern consoles
That ending credit music is fire. Let's face it, Sonic 1 through Sonic & Knuckles has some of the best music ever composed for a video game in my honest opinion.
It sounds a tad bit like Daytonaaaaaaaaaa to me, which I love
I actually got to play this at Galloping Ghost arcade just outside Chicago. This game used to be a personal favorite of mine; the wacky graphics and music fit Sonic very nicely.
Christ this looks hard! I would still love to give this game a try though.
Interesting fact: The cancelled North American port of this game was going use the likeness of Robotnik that was seen in both SatAM and Sonic Underground instead of Eggman.
This has to be the most stressful sonic game out there. I was going nuts just watching this playthrough
Ray is my favorite character. Alot of his sprites in SRB2 come from this game including his death animation which I think is cool
A rare instance where a trackpad might actually make an interesting substitute for a mouse if given enough rolling friction. I might have to bust out my Steam Controller for it!
This looks difficult yet satisfying
I kinda want to play it now...
1993 :
*Credits roll*
Ray & Mighty : "What about us now?"
Sonic : "Don't worry. We'll see you again in 2018."
Ray & Mighty : "How ?"
Sonic : "I have a good feeling about this."
I remember watching this video as a kid.
I was addicted with the running style.
In case you didn't know, this arcade game had the same sound chip as the Genesis 2, so that might explain the "twang". Two Yamaha YM3438s were used.
@@JoseBronxRican What is genesis you talk about the only 16bit console sega ever released was Mega Drive
@@KSenfiz That's the American name for Mega Drive.
@@pablomovil86 And that is one of the reason why I"Like" US!
Wow, this game looks absolutely anxiety-inducing.
can we just talk about how good the voice actor is?
Wario does not approve unofficial use of "Wah".
You mean Waluigi?
@@mertbaskoy4173 Uh.. is it okay if I said both do not approve it?
@@hiichur25 sure lol
My parents were in the U.S. Navy and I was in Italy in the early/mid 90's. When I moved back to the states and told new friends about playing this game in the arcade they thought I made it up.
Man this game is way cooler then other Sonic games 👍
This game looks awesome 💙🔥 SEGA should do some sort of remake of this game.
I had no idea such a thing existed, thanks for sharing. Looks really cool.
Soundtrack is amazing for an arcade game.
I got recommend this at 4 in the morning thanks Internet.
THE BEST WAY TO START THE DAY
In this game, Sonic is restricted to
“Waaaaa!!!”
“Oh shit! Oh shit! Ohh!”
And “Yosh!!”
I enjoy this
Don't forget "EEKEY !" and "raaaagh".
We got 3d blast instead of this weird gem? The controls would've been an inconvenience, but this looks a whole lot more interesting than what we got for an isometric sonic title.
They were going to put it in the gems collection but they couldn’t properly recreate the trackball controls onto the analog stick on the controllers
This game really shows Eggman's style and what he's all about, he doesn't just want to kill Sonic, he also wants to beat and defeat Sonic, make the hedgehog KNOW he lost
I never knew about this game. Looks incredibly fun.
The soundtrack for this game is absolutely incredible!!!!
I can only imagine what a pain it must've been to control this in an arcade
Good god pls no touch screen utilization I don’t want to have to scratch my screen to play this game
Armando Murillo what about a Kirby Tilt n Tumble type of control scheme?
King Dededelicious never played it I’m one of the few people who always play their switch in docked mode and I’d prefer to keep it that way 😅
Sega's arcade games always looked amazing when they came out. They were some of the best looking videogames of their time, truly amazing. There was a time when arcade machines just looked 10x better than the consoles, you simply couldn't get the best quality graphics at home in the early 90s. That only changed really when the likes of the Dreamcast/PS2/Xbox came along.
16:13 Wow, you JUST made it! Imagine if you screwed up right at the end. I was shocked at what happens if you don’t escape. All that work for nothing!
15:55 : egg man says damnit
6:30 the music was right on time there.
Waaaah
For something so old the graphics and voice acting from Eggman are really good.
Awesome stuff! A fine-looking game! Well-played, dude!
Thanks!
I like when Sonic said "WAAAHHHH!"
Yoooo, couldn’t they just mix this in with some of the new mainline series? Something about this fits!
Mania Plus, maybe?
Wow NintendoComplete You were so perfect at Jumping at Waterfall platforms at the end of Wild Water Ways. I played this game on a emulator but I quit during the Waterfall part.
In fact the game was unfair enough that I couldn't write a name or have a rank.
This game looks alot of fun lol Japan always get some dope stuff. & that's one of the reason why I want to move to Japan one day
Same
@@EricToTheScionti Exactly
If the games are the only reason then importing stuff is probably wiser
Sega's arcades throughout Tokyo are amazing.
Funny enough this game came very close to an American release. There was sprites found in a build that changed Eggman to his American Robotnik design.
Wow. Eggman wanted to stay in his tower just before his EggMobile run out of fuel.
This is one of those games that would really benefit from analog control...
One of my favorite arcades games ever. Right up there with Street Fighter 2, Metal Slug and Time Crisis 2.
While I'm not big on Sonic's voice, I really like Robotnik's. Just a really good laugh.

Dang, Robotnik ain't messin' around!
"Prepare to die Sonic!"
this is really good so far aside from you having eggman swear at 15:43 when he actually says "Doggonit!" instead
but other then that. this translation is good
Lmao doggonit? There's no such word in Japanese. Like a lot of words, there is no literal translation for it. Crap or damn are probably the closest you can get I English.
@@NintendoComplete oh ok. i was wondering about that since the beta version of this game (where eggman is given his satam design) had him say "Doggonit!" when you reach him and thats why i asked
and if sega did finally allow this game to be released here ever since mighty and rays return in sonic mania plus. i think that sega wouldnt have eggman say "Dammit!" in the english version as they would use the doggonit quote from the beta version in its place
@@andrewclark3330 Oh no kidding? I didn't realize there was a beta that had anything translated already. Thanks for the heads up.
@@NintendoComplete your welcomed. i found out about the beta version of this game from the cutting room floor website (which is where i found that "Doggonit!" quote from eggman) and i noticed that the translations from this video came from the beta version when i was on the website
@@andrewclark3330 I just looked it up, that's pretty neat. Hahaha I would've used those translations had I known about them instead of translating everything myself.
