- A playthrough of Sega's 1996 edutainment CD-ROM title for PCs running Windows 3.1/95, Sonic's Schoolhouse.
I had this disc sitting around, and after going to the effort of playing so many of the lesser known Mario educational titles, it didn't seem fair to leave the Sonic attempt out.
The game features FPS-style areas where you are tasked with finding answers to questions in maths and English. It then rewards the 5-to-9-year-old-child with passes to go on field trips or to play games on in the play park out behind the schoolhouse. Apparently the Sonic graphics were all taken from the unreleased Sonic X-treme game that was being developed for the Saturn and PC at the time. They certainly look like the prerendered models shown around the time of X-treme's development builds.
If it has any claim to fame (not just notoriety), Sonic's Schoolhouse is the first fully 3D Sonic game to appear on the market. Many sites credit Sonic the Hedgehog into Dreams (included in Christmas NiGHTS on the Saturn) as being the first, but Schoolhouse predates it by a few months.
It's really not terribly exciting unless you have to have a Sonic game that looks like Doom/Wolfenstein 3D, or if your life isn't complete without watching videos of animals with stupid voiceovers of which, somehow none of the animals from the Sonic series appear. Really?
A couple of particular bits did make me laugh though: the ring collecting game starts with the game saying we're going on a Sonic Adventure, and it puts you in a grassy 3D area - sounds promising, right? Well, not after you finish it in less than thirty seconds.
The other lol-worthy bit is the music playing in the background of the matching mini game. Anyone else recognize it? It's a demo song from the old original Sound Blaster 16 installation floppies. Seriously - the same exact song. Way to set that bar high, Sega.

This was the first PC game I ever owned, and call me crazy but I actually have fond memories of this game. Say what you will about it, but it does have some charm to it.
You're not crazy. I could totally see how it would be fun for kids at the time.
Actually, it's sorta the same thing with me and the Elmo's World 2005 plug n play from TechnoSource. It is way worse than both Sonic's Schoolhouse and every Sesame Street NES game due to low visual/sound quality and tedious game play. However, I never cared nor realized how horrible it actually was. I still enjoyed it and remember it.
Sadly, it no longer works properly.

I was playing Sonic's Schoolhouse. It was my child hood game, and I bought this copy from some old guy in gamestop. He said I could get this copy for free. I thought it was weird but I decided to play it. Sonic greeted me, and he told me to type my name. I typed in "Danny" and Sonic says "Get ready to learn about human sacrifices, Danny!" I was scared because Sonic said my name, but other than that I kept playing. Sonic had razor sharp teeth and he was bleeding from his eyes. He was chasing me and I was running and I was scared too! Robotnic shot Sonic and told me to destroy the game with his funny voice. I said I wanted to continue playing. Robotnic facepalmed and left. Sonic then presented me with a final challenge: What's 1 + 1. I was sweating. I gave him the number 3, which he laughed and said I was WRONG! Sonic used me to summon the devil himself, and I died! Oh no!

That's not all, either. The main menu/area song is the same exact MIDI featured in an old Microsoft Multimedia Pack CD, and I believe it was called "Sports".
I'm starting to wonder if the Gumball Bonus Stage song is the only original Sonic song in the game. That's hilarious, considering Sonic 3 has its own share of issues with music.

What I mean, is that there are apparent issues with right holders and contracts (Ice Cap's final music is a remixed song by The Jetzons, Jam is sampled in Carnival Night, etc.), not to mention the Special Stage music isn't even an original Sonic 3 song, but a song from an unused puzzle game with a similar concept to that mode.
Don't get me wrong, the Sonic 3 music is highly favored. I'm just citing the weird problems circling the game's soundtrack.
I think Sonic had this voice in the game because around that time, he probably was still a *kid!* If you think about it, this game is an educational game for children, and it came out in 1996, which was *5* years after the very first Sonic game. At this point, he still didn't have a developed voice yet, so that was probably all they could get for Sonic's voice.
Sonic was in his 20s back then….now he is retired after suffering some running injuries and drives a race car around.

I think I played this when I was 3 or 4. The memories are really fuzzy, but it all seems familiar. I think I played this around 1999. The nostalgia I get from this feels good though. It was more fun than going through a text book at least.

So Sonic had a Windows educational game? Oh boy - if you asked for Doom with numbers and letters, this probably is your only option. It's pretty novel, and will make you laugh a lot.
You might, however, want to pass on actually playing it. It's not quite Carmen Sandiego.

fun fact, the game Baldi's basics are based off of this game, that's why i knew it was so similar xD also, Baldi's basic is also based off of I.M Meen, and 3D Dinosaur Adventure: Save the Dinosaurs, which explains why the hallways in that game look the same to sonic's schoolhouse halls and other.
