I think it would be awesome if you did a part two and talked about the fact that Britney Spears was literally banned from US radio because of a contract or something from 2001-2004 I believe. It also leads into the fact that songs like "I'm A Slave 4 U" didn't chart as high because of the radio ban, and songs like "Toxic" exploded on the radio because I believe it was the first song of hers that was released after the ban was lifted.
For an eventual part 2: The ban Lady Gaga has when it comes to performing in Russia after defending LGBT+ rights. Censorship forcing her to cancel a sold out stadium show in Indonesia in 2012 for not having licenses granted with her never performing there since ( so it's probably a permanent ban ) ... She also was banned again in China years after the born this way one was lifted over meeting the dalaï lama. Her Alejandro performance on American idol was also edited which I believe is pretty rare for TV performances. Her video for Alejandro was banned from airing on most time slots on MTV too. Also this absurd Iranian streaming site melovaz that modify female artists artworks to the point they sometimes blur or erase them fully that could give you many examples for a part 2. They did it with many of Gaga's singles covers.
In part 2, you should talk more about Britney Spears. When “Slave 4 U” came out, radio banned her and wouldn’t play ANY of her music. Her video for “Toxic” was also banned.
Thank you for bringing "Strange Fruit" to my attention. What a devastating, sublime, beautiful, haunting performance. If I were hearing it for the first time, I think I'd have to collect myself for a bit before I had the presence of mind to clap.
I missed the “Jukebox” or “The Box” video channel. They played all the banned videos that MTV didn’t play. I remember seeing “Justify My Love” playing often. They even played Sir Mix A Lot’s “Put ‘Em On The Glass”. Lol!
Michael Jackson’s “They Don’t Really Care About Us” original had antisemetic lyrics (kick me, k**ke me) and he was forced to re-record and re-release the song. At the time it had already been widely distributed to music sellers and all copies of the original had to be pulled from shelves. Imagine how costly this was at the time?
You could make an entire series solely covering metal bans. It's more uncommon for a metal band to NOT be banned or threatened with a ban or an arrested because of their music. It's absolutely insane.
Madonna was always so ahead of her time, in so many aspects. She doesn't deserve all the hate, misogyny and ageism she gets. Pop music wouldn't be the same without her.
I wanted to say how much I appreciate the work and research that you put into each of your videos. You're not afraid to talk about controversial topics or social issues. I respect that. This video DEFINITELY needs a part 2. Keep up the great work, Naomi! ❤
I find it funny how kbs banned Boombayah for "Vugler lyrics'' but still allowed newjeans cookie despite the lyrics being like 100x worse than Boombayah, and the age of the members along with mhj's past when she was in sm dose not help.
I went to an Afrocentric elementary school and we used to have to recite Strange Fruit. I’m not sure how I’d feel about my kids reciting it now. I didn’t have much understanding of what I was saying back then but I’m grateful that they opened my eyes up so early.
my favorite banned mv is nature's 'girls' the uncensored version is CRAZY omg, like its horror-based and the scene where the axe hits the girl in the eye at the end-
Kylie Minogue's video for All The Lovers was banned in Indonesia because there is gay kissing in it, Kylie refused to remove it because that completely ruins the message of the song.
I love this video so much, I find this topic so fascinating especially concerning my idol Madonna, and you explained everything so well while not dragging it out. I would love to see a video on songs and videos that weren’t banned but which caused a great deal of controversy!
Naomi, every time I open youtube you’re on top of my feed with a new video & I can’t complain 🥰✨ Thank you for putting so much effort, research and time into your videos ❤️
If you do make a part 2, I think it would be interesting to continue looking at worldwide standards compared to local ones. For example, Japanese artists Namie Amuro & Koda Kumi have been banned for the sexual nature of their songs in a few countries (Namie for her song "WANT ME, WANT ME" & Kumi for her songs "SHAKE IT", "Selfish", and "KO-SO-KO-SO", among others) when American audiences wouldn't have batted an eye
In K-pop, even choreographies are being banned, especially if they are deemed too unfit for music show stages and idols are asked to change the choreography in order to perform their comeback on music shows.
I'm glad you made the video this long, gave you time to really get into all the specific details about each song This reminded me of when I was younger and Rihanna's S&M came out. On the radio station I listened to, the words "chains" and "whips" were censored with a classic record scratching/sudden slow down, which kept me from knowing the real meaning of the song until I was a bit older. But this year I heard it on a different station completely uncensored (and my coworker loudly singing along to it)! Apparently it was only the BBC that decided to change those lines and rename the song to "Come On" whereas other stations kept it as is. They also completely cut her vocals from the post-chorus "S S S and M M M" part, so it was just a cute little instrumental synth break lol

Madonna should be acknowledged more for always pushing the boundaries at a time when nobody else did! She really did help a lot of marginalized people by creating visibility and speaking up about political issues when she could‘ve just stayed silent and pleased the general public like a lot of other artists did. She risked her career a lot to fight for a good cause. ❤ I will always admire her for that!
I remember so many K-pop censor bans here and there, it would really take awhile to remember them all. But I remember Dal Shabet’s career being especially effected by censors. As on the issue, I’m for freedom of expression, especially because I love most of the examples. But is is for certain audiences, and I respect if certain parts of the public square (like maybe an award show) need to have special considerations. That said, creating a world for everyone means catering to all ages and not dumbing anything down because we think kids will be scared. This issue def feels more complicated that music, I appreciate the examples you had!
Surprised you did not mention Do What You Want, Gaga featuring R Kelly. Maybe pulled rather than banned? Most serious example of a banned video I can think of

EXID's first hit song "Up and Down" got banned from music shows for the "sexual" choreo so EXID mocked the music shows by having another comeback "ah Yeah" which talked about censorship when it came to female idols and workplace harassment.
Born free by m.I.a. is another video that was banned. It’s an anti war message a lot of her work is. Or anti racism. Like listen to sun showers it’s a cute little bop at first then it’s a sad political message that gets me in my feels for part of one verse like wtf. Also congrats at over 100 vids honestly you always make such good informative ones.
Regarding Madonna's 2003 controversy, she also pulled her video in response to an incident that occurred around that time involving the country music trio The Chicks (then known as the Dixie Chicks). On March 10, 2003, nine days before the invasion of Iraq, the Chicks performed at the Shepherd's Bush Empire theater in London, England. It was the first concert of their Top of the World tour in support of their sixth album "Home". Lead singer Natalie Maines told the crowd, "Just so you know, we're on the good side with y'all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas." After the statement was reported by the British newspaper The Guardian, it triggered a backlash from American country listeners, who were mostly right-wing and supported the war. The Chicks, then one of the most popular country acts at the time, were blacklisted by many country radio stations, received death threats, and were criticized by other country musicians. The backlash damaged sales of the Chicks' music and concert tickets and lost them corporate sponsorship. A few days later, Maines issued an apology, saying her remark had been disrespectful. She rescinded the apology in 2006, saying she felt Bush deserved no respect.

Fun fact - I think Gaga's music is banned in Belarus and Russia due to her being an LGBTQ+ ally who has spoken out against the Russian government. My work uploaded a video with Lady Gaga music in it and we found the video was automatically banned in Belarus and Russia.
Well, she wasn't banned from local music channels and radio stations (not sure about Belarus though), her concert promoters in Russia were fined for her so-called "homosexual propaganda" on stage
'Underneath Your Clothes' by Shakira was banned in Argentina, because her than boyfriend Antonio le la Rua, who was a son and advisor of Argentine ex president (He resigned because of crisis), appeared in the MV. I think they even didn't allow to sell her album Laundry Service at the time. You could also make whole video about Eminem.

@@omarslayz Thanks for saying it cause Madonna's often presented as the pioneer when it comes to that. 🤔 She gets nearly all the credits with her elders ( specially black women artists like Donna summer, Nina Simone Grace Jones, Billie Holiday etc ) bold moves being erased or forgotten "to her profit". 😔
Well I know that when Kanye West released the video for his song “All Falls Down,” MTV bans one part of the song. When he said “And the White Man get paid off of all of that,” MTV cut that out of the video when they were airing the video on their channel

She did it before Mariah's Honey/Butterfly era, Britney's Slave 4 U era, Xtina's Dirty/Stripped era, Rihanna's GGGB/Rated R eras, Miley's Can't Be Tamed/Bangerz eras, Chloe's Have Mercy/Treat Me era, Janelle Monae's Age Of Pleasure era....
madonna is an artist in the sense that she is always fearlessly expressing herself. 👍
For an eventual part 2:
The ban Lady Gaga has when it comes to performing in Russia after defending LGBT+ rights.
The first one is more of an honorary ban, if anything. Being banned from a country for being a decent human being.
@@prettierjesus3119 I so agree, it's a ban you can be proud of. 💪
I remember they banned s&m and umbrella they really thought she caused the floods 🤣
Little miss sunshine Rihanna wya

In part 2, you should talk more about Britney Spears. When “Slave 4 U” came out, radio banned her and wouldn’t play ANY of her music. Her video for “Toxic” was also banned.
Her videos is soo sexy. Too bad it wasnt a hit. She was young at the time. Dont forget to add Christina Aguilera about video "Dirty."
The video to Toxic was just bumped to late night viewing at the time for it had followed Janet Jackson's SuperBowl Incident.
@@ryanappleton3653speaking of Janet Jackson. Slave 4 U was originally for her, but she turned it down for obvious reasons. 😬
I don't know if it's technically considered "banned", but the country world boycotting The Chicks (fka the dixie chicks) has always fascinated me.
I'd love a video on this topic!
M.I.A.'s Born Free video was one of the first videos to be banned on RUclips

Eric would know a lot about that😂😂😂
Thank you for bringing "Strange Fruit" to my attention. What a devastating, sublime, beautiful, haunting performance. If I were hearing it for the first time, I think I'd have to collect myself for a bit before I had the presence of mind to clap.
i remember Judas by Lady Gaga was banned on radio because christian’s were mad at the song
And didn't she drop it Easter weekend? Iconic.
She dropped it on Holy Thursday when the video took place! I thought that was genius! (I grew up Catholic and love this song so much!)
My favorite Gaga song. She was truly in one with that.
I missed the “Jukebox” or “The Box” video channel. They played all the banned videos that MTV didn’t play. I remember seeing “Justify My Love” playing often. They even played Sir Mix A Lot’s “Put ‘Em On The Glass”. Lol!
I miss 'Jukebox' so much...that was a fun time.
That sucks. I used to watch The Box whenever i was in London because i was also always a fan of music channels airing music videos back in the day
Michael Jackson’s “They Don’t Really Care About Us” original had antisemetic lyrics (kick me, k**ke me) and he was forced to re-record and re-release the song. At the time it had already been widely distributed to music sellers and all copies of the original had to be pulled from shelves. Imagine how costly this was at the time?
Michael apologize to Jews Community. He love the people. So yes he did video in Brazil. but the video banned the Prison Version from MTV.
the fact that 90 % of these are songs by women..
This is why I’m subscribed. So many songs that I didn’t even realize was so controversial at the time!
You could make an entire series solely covering metal bans. It's more uncommon for a metal band to NOT be banned or threatened with a ban or an arrested because of their music. It's absolutely insane.
the time when the entire "All For You" album by Janet Jackson was banned in Singapore for moaning too much on Would You Mind 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
ooo if i do a pt 2 that’s gotta be there 4 sure
Madonna was always so ahead of her time, in so many aspects. She doesn't deserve all the hate, misogyny and ageism she gets. Pop music wouldn't be the same without her.
I wanted to say how much I appreciate the work and research that you put into each of your videos. You're not afraid to talk about controversial topics or social issues. I respect that. This video DEFINITELY needs a part 2. Keep up the great work, Naomi! ❤
Thank you!! 💕
That letter from the FBI was the BEST thing to happen for NWA.
Who would’ve thought that F*ck the Police by NWA would birth hardcore, gritty gangsta rap music?
I definitely want a part 2 to this, it was very informative to me.
I’m 99% sure I’ll do it since so many asked. And I’m happy to!
im sorry the funniest ban is the blackpink one for driving laws that is so highly unserious on Korea's part 😭
my favorite banned mv is nature's 'girls'
the uncensored version is CRAZY omg, like its horror-based and the scene where the axe hits the girl in the eye at the end-
Kylie Minogue's video for All The Lovers was banned in Indonesia because there is gay kissing in it, Kylie refused to remove it because that completely ruins the message of the song.

I love this video so much, I find this topic so fascinating especially concerning my idol Madonna, and you explained everything so well while not dragging it out. I would love to see a video on songs and videos that weren’t banned but which caused a great deal of controversy!
Naomi, every time I open youtube you’re on top of my feed with a new video & I can’t complain 🥰✨
Thank you for putting so much effort, research and time into your videos ❤️
Please make a part two! This was a great video
I really hope you include Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time" from 1989 her video was banned to MTV At Night
If I do a pt 2 I will ♥️
@@naomi.cannibal Im all for part 2 and dont forget to add more rappers got banned too.
I would love for you to make a Video on Pop Song writers like Bonnie McKee and Ester Dean and how they ruled the 2010's
I'm glad you made the video this long, gave you time to really get into all the specific details about each song
This reminded me of when I was younger and Rihanna's S&M came out.
Thank you!!!
Wow, that's some heavy editing 😂 I really didn't think broadcasters could do all that 😅

Anyone else old enough to remember when MTV banned "White Houses" by Vanessa Carlton?
Madonna should be acknowledged more for always pushing the boundaries at a time when nobody else did! She really did help a lot of marginalized people by creating visibility and speaking up about political issues when she could‘ve just stayed silent and pleased the general public like a lot of other artists did. She risked her career a lot to fight for a good cause. ❤ I will always admire her for that!

Prince’s Darling Nikki would be great for a part 2 - its the song that is responsible for parental advisory stickers

We do not want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas."
After the statement was reported by the British newspaper The Guardian, it triggered a backlash from American country listeners, who were mostly right-wing and supported the war.
