I think I remember you talking about these Zappa CD's. I remember when I was working at Strawberries Records I think Ryko put out a slew of Zappa discs? Or was that Bowie's catalog that they released? The Mother's 'Absolutely Free' CD looks nice. I love the 'Lumpy Money' one also. My question is who gets all the money for all of these newly released CD's and albums? Does his kids get all the royis one of the best I've ever seen. Looks like I gotta repurchase some of these albums. I got my Zappa albums on iTunes in 2006 when I was 14 (those being Freak Out, AF, WOITFTM, and Hot Rats). Not too long after, iTunes removed all of his music and I had to hunt down the 1995 ones while CD stores were still open. When I heard about the reissues, I was not going to repurchase the 30+ albums I have already. I'll have to get Absolutely Free, Hot Rats, And Ruben on the 2012 ones. I'll start making a list.

Really digging the 1971 Carnege Hall release. Billy the Mountain is geographically altered, referencing New York and Denver. Also, as Im sure youve heard, there is an awesome tongue twister of an exchange between Flo & Eddie. "You got da code? I got da code. Ok I got da pencin. One hen. One hen 2 ducks. One hen 2 ducks 3 squawking geese".....and so on and it gets pretty freaking amazing by the time they shut up...lol.

I'm interested if the classic Verve set will sound good enough on vinyl - I want these but don't want to spend too much tracking down originals - would love to have a copy of WOIFTM on vinyl, same with Uncle Meat w/o penalty tracks - the rest I think I am okay with my Ryko versions...

The gold Hot Rats is the exact same version as all the other Ryko Hot Rats CDs, the digital remix with the longer version of The Gumbo Variations. The New version on Zappa/UMe is the original album mix, completists would be wise to have both.
As I've noted, the Ryko versions are a completely different mix and edit. No version is superior. The 2012 is the first time the original mix (same as vinyl) has been put on CD, and quite well. I love the Ryko version too, especially for The Gumbo Variations.
The 2012 Remaster of "Weasels Ripped my Flesh" from the original vinyl mix sounds better the previous cd versions. But the 2012 Remaster of "Absolutely Free" no, inasmuch is the remaster from the original MONO mix and the sound is too cold IMHO.
Continued... Especially the ones from the early 80's are horrible (I'm looking at you, You Are What You Is...). On the other hand, Sheik Yerbouti, Apostrophe, Overnite Sensation and, especially, One Size Fits All are truly wonderful. So warm and dry, yet with the necessary hard edge to the sound quality that I like. Oh, and Sleep Dirt is amazing! But I guess you'll cover that next time. Anyway, you're a man of my own heart, Rob. And if you like Genesis as well, then you're my brother!

Aha, thanks for shedding light on "the penalty tracks". No wonder "Tengo Na Minchia Tanta" sounds like an 80s track - it is an 80s track.

For Hot Rats, should I get the 95 version or the 2012 version?
There is a gold disc Hot Rats I have that is an extended version. I have all the vinyls and the gold disc is the one I would recommend.
