Zappa's outstanding musical output over the years is undisputed. In the 70s, Zappa's music exuded an extraordinary magic with musicians such as Ruth Underwood and George Duke.
Zappa taught us all to listen to music and different sounds that pushed the limits . So ahead of his time
"I write and play music for myself, my sole intended audience" - Frank Zappa
I was a big fan ,still am !
Was lucky enough to catch him live four or five times at small London venues throughout the 70s!!!
What a guitar player he was!!!...
And obviously a musical visionary!!!.............
Seeing dweezel miss his father was very touching. I love that he respects his fathers work and is so dedicated to mastering it. Wonderful
I was 14 and a couple of my older friends took me to NYC to see Zappa at the palladium ever since I shut out the radio and played every Zappa album I could get seen him live many times this movie braut tears to my eye keep it up he is the greatest
Brilliant film. Captures the genius of Frank Zappa because it was made closer to the time of Frank's life than later documentaries.
The measure of a father is in the integrity of his children. A+ Mr, Frank Zappa.. A+.

I'm 64, and miss a lot of dead musicians, but I miss Frank Zappa and Johnny Cash the most. I had not seen this excellent documentary, and so nice it is focused so much on Frank and his amazing music.
Weird u say that as I saw Frank live in England where I'm from and he played Ring of Fire!! As well as other Angelic Psalms by Father O'blivion!!! Yes missed very much his likes will never that's never be seen or heard of again!!!
Frank is the most under rated musician and guitarist in the world.... he is a fucking genius!! I have loved Frank from a very early age of 17 or 18 years old I( am now 55)and still listen to him daily!
I agree. Frank was too far above average . . . went over their heads . . .
James Salter:-) yes I think so too!
I'll view Frank as a genius composer first and always. Everything else merely played into that. There will come a day when all of his work will be celebrated and played by some of the most gifted musicians the world has yet to know.
Evan J That will be a great thing!!
Me too!!!
This might be the greatest one hour, forty six minutes and eight seconds I've ever watched on youtube. Thank you for posting.
You are welcome. And thank you

Been a devoted admirer of Frank since I first heard Freak Out! in the late sixties. His art has provided me with much needed direction and joy, continually opening pathways leading to the genius within us all, if we would just listen!
Heard the music of Frank Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention for the first time at the age of 10, it was Freak Out, i am now 57 and yes, i am still listening to that album and the other 70 in my collection. I love his music with such a passion and thank him and all who played with him for the pleasure it continues to enrich my life with.I am also grateful to Dweezil Zappa for the passion in which he has devoted himself to his fathers music and the many who treasure it.
Maple Leaf Gardens.....70’s and early 80’s never missed an opportunity to enjoy six finger Frank and his crew of Freaks. Great memories thank you.
Frank Zappa!!! the world will never experience a talent like his, ever!!!!!
When I was 15, Frank and The Mothers album FREAK OUT, warped my mind. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!
Dweezil really really kicked his game up to top tier level to honor dads music properly.
I saw Dweezil at Hampton Beach Casino in NH play the entire ROXY SHOW. It was mind blowing
Jeffrey Diggins KONA ZAPPA!!!!
I saw Frank Zappa perform live in Wurzberg, Germany, in 1983. Needless to say, it was awesome.
With today's CGI technology, I'd love to see a full-length movie version of Joe's Garage.
Milton Ragsdale excellent!!
saw him this november 2019 big thumbs up!!! the only thing missing was the humor that Frank had and shared with his Audience......
Been passed away 27 years and his stuff is still alive .....
@MorbidManMusic we do ...
very true "Jazz is not dead, it only smells funny"
Great music never die, Mozart never die, Zappa never die...
I was so lucky to go see Frank in '75 in Miami, his live shows were so much better than anything he did on record, some people are like that, the studio changes their whole approach to making music.
A live Zappa show was the the ticket to have. I miss him.
I bet that was the truth.
Ruth Underwood was one of the major MAJOR players. Why was she basically left out? Otherwise, an OK doc.
Because she was too smart to get sucked in too close? Just speculating
I miss Frank Zappa 😢🥲
This is far and away SO much better than the recent Zappa film, in terms of the evolution of his music and the people who played with him, right up until Dweezils band.
We pay a lot of tax here in The Netherlands but we know that sometimes good things are done with our money ;) like funding this documentary :)
Yes, this is the best documentation of him to date
Frank felt that if you got it, that was great. If you didn't... you probably weren't supposed to. Frank was one of the few composers I believe was a genius. That is a term that is overused but not when applied to Frank. As a player, his jam on Zoot Allures on this documentary is transformative.
....vai's description of the origins of 'Baltimore so effortlessly is just wonderful.....what grace...
Seeing this film again reminds me of the controlled madness and chaos around Frank. I have the background story to 200 Motels and Uncle Meat in 'Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa 1968-1971'. It's my story but reveals Frank's home life not shown in other books, from getting up to going to bed, rehearsing with the Mothers, composing at the piano, visitiing rock stars, freaks, family squabbles, and more.
I am ordering the book tomorrow.
Got your book Pauline, it's a page turner!
@@chucktedeschi3294 Great and thank you.
@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 Did you get the book?
@@paulinebutcherbird YES! However the intention was to read it on the plane to Europe about 22 hour flight. I am no spring chicken and this particular flight to and from was hard work. I will read it soon. Thanks for remembering me! Hope you are well.😘
Hard to imagine music ever being done on this level again, Frank was the best,
I am loath to agree with you, but I think you might be right. Frank would never get a recording contract these days for one. I also wonder if there is no longer an "us and them" culture to react against? Zappa and the Mothers were in direct, antagonistic opposition to pre-sixties white conservative culture. For anything comparable to emerge to Zappa it would need that kind of stimuli. But then, it would be a pale imitation of the great man. Zappa was a one off. I'm just glad I discovered his music!
@@Alun49 I first heard Frank when I was about 19. I had one cassette of over night sensation in my car left by a buddy and once I heard the song " 50/50 I was hooked. 41 yrs later and I still listen to Zappa. I'd question if we need another. lol
@@banalpedant41 "Once a Zappa fan...." as they say. I agree in principle with the unnecessary need for another. Zappa was unique, as all the truly great artists are. If someone where to come along in any way comparable, they would have to be as unique and original. However, as we face a more and more uncertain future we certainly need artists to emerge who can challenge directly the powers that be as Zappa did. Maybe I still cling too much to the principles that emerged in the sixties and seventies and despair somewhat at the lack of any real challenge from the bands around today.
@@banalpedant41 Oh yes, my brother Brough home Hot Rats when I was thirteen. Blew my mind. It was not until he died though that I really looked at his back catalogue, so I can only claim almost thirty years of fandom! I wish I had seen the man live!

There's music, and then there's Frank Zappa, truly the greatest composter.
Love the interviews with the band. You can see and feel the love and respect they had for Frank.
Thanks for the upload! Excellent, never-seen-before footage of Frank and his collaborators. He is truly one of the deviants that shapes music, etc. to this day!
This is one of best documentary I've seen in my life about Frank Zappa
His music changed my life, totally. I' ve an eternal debt with him :)))
Thank you Frank!
Its interesting that Zappa has a reputation for loving incredible complexity in music, but deep down he always had this soft spot for rhythm and blues and doo-wop from his youth (apparently he was listening to a lot of that again just before he passed, I suppose he found it comforting). He was fine with simple music, it just had to be good (and he had his own definition of good, like we all do).
br1tag, best dealer of Zappa's unreleased content since 20 years. 👍
thanks for this documentary... very interesting and inspiring.
Frank Zappa musical genius. RIP.
Thank you for uploading this!!! Frank was an absolute genius, and I have the utmost respect for him. He could have easily sold out to the corporate music machine and pushed out the crap they thrive on. Frank stuck to his guns and stayed true to HIS concepts. I also tip my hat to Dweezel for keeping Frank's memory alive, and making it as entertaining as he does.
Greatly missed , thanks for posting, brings back lots of memories.
Definitely the best Zappa documentary I've watched, and I've seen a truckload! Thank you for posting it.
Such an extremely well made documentary. Thank you so much for posting this
Man oh man. With the exception of taking brief time-outs to look up some of the cats that he played with, I have to say I was captured by this entire documentary. The guy was breathtakingly talented. Beyond the comprehension of most, myself partly included.
It IS amazing that Zappa was able to bring his Imagination to Fruition. He Overcame so many issues that I don't think that anybody can catalog them. If he was able to defeat anything or anybody, it was the Music Industry itself. He proved that you CAN be Yourself and succeed, AND maybe even profit from it. He is a Great Example to the Rest of us....
A composer is a guy who goes around forcing his will on unsuspecting air molecules, often with the assistance of unsuspecting musicians.
Frank Zappa
his music most certainly educated my ears, helps me with everything actually
Great, but don't eat the yellow snow.

Frank's music really is a high point in human achievement. Loved his sense of humor, too. Kudos to Dweezil for keeping up such high standards and beyond!
His band keeps going outside of the observable universe. Now we know there is land there.
I was 13 yrs old In feb 1977 and hated life at our Comprehensive school but one break time in The Music Room , my chum Adrian ( and “ Murtle “ was stood there too ) produced a pre-recorded cassette which he put into Mr Harris’ machine . “ listen to this ! ....” It was the uk release of “ Frank Zappa and The Mother’s of Invention “ ( which apparently is both their first two albums although I was confused when playing them on Here for first time cos of the editing ) but what I heard that day honestly made me feel less of a “ freak “ or “ misfit “ ! I took it home and got lost in it. Fantastic. I can anticipate Every Sound AND it sounds as Wonderful every single time 43 years later . May The Gods bless his soul and those who love his music 🏴😇❤️Wessex ps “ murtle “ hated all music and went on to score the winning Goal in the 1995 FA Cup Final and probably doesn’t even remember that moment cos he went on to be a Soccer Hero - it changed my life though because I became a hero to myself for the first time 😃
FZ was the GREATEST American composer of all time, and the GREATEST improvisational guitarist. Not to mention his ability to perceive accurately what was going on in society, in ALL it's aspects !!!
Mark W and an extraordinary performance artist. You can find him doing avant garden music on Steve Allen's talk show 70 years ago!
It makes this 70 year old Sicilian who’s mother was a kid when his elders and her father would brake bread together and enjoy music and singing love the music and the manner in which he delivered, I feel he was the most versatile composer playing guitar
I forgot how good he is. Thanks so much.
I agree.....I needed a "Re-Set"....a Re-Calibration as it were.........and Oh boy ! Did it ever work !!!!!!!!
Thank GOD for Zappa ,-
Wow what a great gift. Thanks for uploading this video. Most of the footage was new for me. Miss you Frank🙏
the part when duke was talkin about himself not being able to sing and then: inca roads with dukes not so perfectly voice, but its sound fits perfectly even with all the flaws. zappas genius couldnt be described better. a master of predicting sounds and putting together all slices prepared on sheets with improvisation, even with the randomness of failures and mistakes or the character of his musicians.

Capt Beefheart.....Frank was an excellent artist....
I was moved to tears many times throughout this video. The beauty of so much of his music is so moving. We're so lucky to be alive in this era of humanity , and so fortunate enough to have had Frank Zappa. Long live FZ.
It's such a beautiful film. Such love among the musicians and in the music. I think in 40 years of being a Zappaphile this is the best appreciation of his work I've seen, and there's stuff in there I'd never heard before, thought I'd heard it all! Thank you so much :-)
Boy he had a ear for talent. Terry (I'm so cute)Bozzio and Steve Vai to name a hundred 👍. Good stuff, thank you.
I'm now 60 and was "turned onto" Zappa by a fellow music-loving friend in Cape Town. He had everything ever recorded and made available in SA at that time. I've accumulated a lot of Zapa . . . These two albums (both very short) I bought eighteen days apart. Something in the absurdity of the lyric Frank coupled with the sheer genius perfection of the music in composition, arrangement and performance has held me in thrall since I was 15 in 1970. What a guitar player! Another friend of mine from school days lives in Orlando Fl now and has just sold Dweezil Zappa his FractalAudio Device. His name is Gary, also an accomplished guitarist but will readily admit that Frank was in a category all on his own! IMHO; Frank Zappa was the most prodigious, significant and gifted contributor to the World's musical history since Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. What I'd give to see them collaborating in the afterlife ;-) I can't wait to see it!
For such a megalomaniacal exhibitionist, Frank and the Mothers seemed to be a well kept secret, a group of musicians that played for or to other musicians......virtually nothing they released was suitable for mainstream airplay! Buuuuutt, if you were hip enough, or lucky enough to stumble upon the "sound" , you felt and rightly so, that this was an absolutely new and unique expression of musical prodigism. I still remember the first time I heard a 12 minute plus rendering of "The Torture never stops", accompanied with the full theatrical Zappa/Beefheart treatment. Absolute magic, and it still has the same effect on me. Miss ya, Frank......❤
Beef heart was the Real Genius not Zappa
Must have been indeed “orgasmic” for advanced musicians to play in Zappa’s rock-jazz-progressive band. Congrats to all those musicians! 🙏🏻

By the way I'm portuguese and living in the North of Portugal.

Great Doc. Might have to watch it again....like now!
the part where Vai discusses “genius” followed by the Palladium footage starting at 1:25:00 never ever fails to give me CHILLS. that guitar is so sloppy and gnarled but so trascendent. I’ve always admired FZ’s guitar playing for that very reason. A guitarist like Steve Vai could shred circles around him but no one could EVER or will ever come close to his insanely unique style and improvisation capabilities. amazing every time.
Frank Zappa is one of the greatest musicians that has ever walked the planet earth. I really miss him and I listen to his music every day of my life. I can't get enough of these videos and documentaries and have seen Dweezil playing his music three times now. I love you Franky.
This one made me remember how slim everyone used to be.

Zappa Lives!
Europeans have always taken a much deeper interest in our great American (really), Frank Zappa. Sure he had a wild sense of humor, but he was as American as apple pie, because he was a completely self-made artist, took full vantage of our First Amendment freedom of speech, and wasn’t afraid to look authority in the eye and spit at it, when it was deserved.
He also made a whole lot of fun of 'hypocrit america' ;-)

Thank you for sharing this wonderful documentary about a truly innovative and revolutionary musician. I had the good fortune to see Frank several times with different incarnations of his bands - all were spectacular. I saw him play at Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His first line: "I've never played in a fucking church before".
