I have listened to it like 5 times now. It is a fantastic album for sure. The blues are heavy, deep, and damn good.
I love this set. This is hard core blues by Frank. Looking forward to whats next (Over-Nite Sensation Project Object?)
Nice review, Bill! Interesting point about getting Cal Schenkel back into the picture. Note that "Love Will Make Your Mind Go Wild" is actually a cover of a song by the Penguins, written by Curtis Williams. (I have the 45!) The credit was erroneously left off the physical releases of Funky Nothingness, but I've been told it is correctly credited on Spotify.

My CD copy of Funky Nothingness arrived yesterday. It is the posthumous release I have been hoping for. Hats Off to Joe Travers! He did an excellent job in researching and assembling this one. Great stuff here.

Very nice review but I have one major difference of opinion.
As much as I enjoy all of Cal Schenkel's work for Frank , John Williams photography, especially the UV film album cover is period perfect. Everything about the production is period perfect. Michael Mesker's work with period perfect archive materials is absolutely spectacular here.

Just based on certain moments of the Roxy movie alone; I'd have to disagree and say that Zappa was a more than competent drummer/percussionist.

picked this up as well, haven't spun it yet.
I think this buried treasure from the Zappa Vault unequivocally settles which of the Maestro’s records is the undisputed successor to Hot Rats. Case closed. All that’s left is to sit back and enjoy it, not to mention the jaw-dropping second disc in this three-disc set. (My life would not be ruined without the third but that’s just nit-picking.) Can’t wait for the upcoming Over-Nite Sensation box. (Damn, it’s a great time to be a Zappa fan!)
My favourite Frank Zappa-album cover is Playground Psychotics (2:12:05, 57 tracks, 10/27/92) #60, september 1970 - 10 december 1971. That"s Cal Schenkel at his best! Talk about laid back attitude. And I love the cd-booklet.

I guarantee you the reason Cal isn't being used for any of these releases is because Gail got mad at him at some point.
I didn’t realize the CD version has more than the LP version. Sharleena is definitely in my top favorite FZ tunes.
This album is sorta like “jazz blues” to me. Don’t know if that’s an official sub genre. But it has plenty of blues attitudes amidst jazzy arrangements/composition structures

Joe T. said those album cover shots were done with Infrared film, hence the mirrored effect.
The infrared film changes the colors. Just like the cover of Hot Rats. Jimi Hendrix's Are You Experienced(US cover) was also done this way. The mirror effect is a result of the printing process. I also heard Joe's comments during the Zappacast livestream too about the cover shot of FN being shot on infrared film.
I have everything I can afford by Zappa but being on social security now, sadly this is out of my range. Jim

Im still waiting for my vinyl to arrive...drives me nuts. Boggles my mind why they cant match Vinyl content to the CD when we pay for it anyways..

Not to nit pick but Basement Music #2 on Quadiophiliac has nothing to do with Basement Jam on FN. The former is from 78 when FZ tells us he was prevented by WB from recording due to litigation.
Vehemently disagree; these are barrel scrapings pure and simple and I doubt that FZ seriously considered releasing this "lost album" considering the quality of even the first disc. Kudos to Vaultmeister Joe for his superhuman efforts to make some sense out of all this stuff but its a band with some weak links in it (especially Max Bennet who was a lot more at home with the L.A. Express). The extended versions of some of this stuff (especially the long "Clap" and the interminable FZ and AD duets) are tedium defined. For Zappa completists only (I am not one and so didn't fork out the $60 CDN for it). Happy that most here seem to love it but all I can say is wait till you hear the Overnite Sensation box which is a hundred times better than this mishmash. Minds will be blown...

I suppose the album cover is supposed to reflect the "funky" title, right? Well, if that's the case, it seems somewhat odd to me that they'd choose a picture
of Frank in SERIOUS COMPOSER mode. Or perhaps that's the joke? Let's make the cover all sexy and things, and then have a very un-sexy picture of Frank?
I'm also not a fan of the pointless commercialization of Frank's image. I mean, putting his face on a guitar pick is no better than the useless Halloween masks
and what have you. It's just cheaply made, overprized crap that nobody needs.
As for the music on this release......it's great. No surprises there.

oh we need a bunch of mediocre blues tunes instead...may the trust rot who've lost the plot..fz continues to roll in his grave.....how bout another Halloween mask????
