  • One of our awesome viewers Stolon the Noble challenged us to make a Genie Warlock build taking the Djinni warlock and using it as a pirate. We loved the build idea and decided to take our shot at it today!
This build combines the Hit and Run playstyle of the Swashbuckler Rogue with the Control spells of the Djinni Genie Warlock to build us a character that is very well rounded against different enemy types.

I'm always impressed at what you come up with, I'd like to see if you can make a "blind" character that uses a mount to find their way to enemies and blindfighting that is thematic and capable

A pretty cool thing you can do with Air Genasi is be small sized and take Squat Nimbleness for 40 ft. movement and the other goodies it brings (+1 DEX, a skill proficiency and advantage against grapples). Synergizes really well with Swashbuckler imo, since you can dash around more due to Fancy Footwork and a high movement is great for that!

this reminds me thematically of my squall-caller build, a mark of the storm half-elf storm sorcerer pirate who controls the wind around them to give their ship a supernatural edge. something about wind and pirates is just a fun combination I guess

Fun build. Love the theme for sure. Swashbuckler-Warlock is a bit like the not allowed Swashbuckler-Arcane Trickster, so many ways to magically enhance your roguishness.

Hey there sage. Let me drop one for the algorithm! :)
Im starting a new campaign as a player, in a desert themed setting. Im making a swashbucler fighter and i am swinging from caravan wagon to caravan wagon! But a swashbucler djinni would fit in so well!
    Perhaps if my character dies...
    Have a good one.

If I were going with the Rogue/Genie Warlock pirate route, I'd lean more towards Marid for the Genie patron than Djinni. Take something like Mark of Storms Half-Elf for lineage, or Water Genasi if the DM's not allowing stuff from Eberron. Mark of Storms spell list is practically a combination of the Djinni and Marid spell lists, so it really fits well, while Water Genasi works well for naval-based campaigns with the swim speed, water breathing, and water walk. Fog Cloud and Sleet Storm from the Marid Patron/Mark of Storms are also really useful defensive and anti-caster abilities to have in this character's arsenal.
Alternatively, for a less water-based theme, I'd go Bugbear with the Dao Genie patron. Bugbear gives extra reach for melee attacks, making it even easier to avoid opportunity attacks while running in and out of melee. Dao's Genie's Wrath adds bludgeoning damage to one attack per round, opening up shenanigans with the Crusher feat to force a disengage if your enemy catches up to you. Dao also has the most powerful Elemental Gift, since it gives blanket resistance to bludgeoning damage. Plus, Dao's spell list includes Spike Growth, so for enemies that are too dangerous for melee you can put a Spike Growth underneath them and then do wild Crusher shenanigans with a Hand Crossbow (which can deal some bludgeoning damage thanks to Dao's Genie's Wrath) or Eldritch Blast with Repelling Blast, Grasp of Hadar, and Dao's Genie's Wrath.
For both, I'd probably also drop dual-wielding and instead use Booming Blade to further punish enemies that try to chase me if I have advantage on the attack, or Thirsting Blade to more reliably hit if I don't.

Actually, my Rogue/Warkock multickass is with only 1 lvl of Hexblade warlock and the rest is 9 lvls in swashbuckler rogue. The idea is that warlock goves you medium armor, shield and booming blade and hex which synergizes with panache

Rodeo Clown style of ctr. They would have to be nimble, quick, can take a blow. I can see one moving around, getting the attention of the opponent. Opponent gives chase, but the Rodeo Clown can dodge etc. Also taunt opponents. This way, their group can take advantage of the opponent, because they are focus on the Rodeo Clown ctr. Stupid idea?

I played with something quite similar but with swashbuckler rogue abusing booming blade. I took efreeti warlock and intended to build around a Pirate that jumps (flies) to the other ship and cast a self targeted fireball.

  • @glitchking666

I would go kobald for setting up advantage when the normal and swashbuckler ways dont work. And use hex and booming blade more in the build until i got the thirsting blade invocation than i would drop booming blade from the rotation unless i can use it for opportunity attacks using the war caster feat .

Remember that monk is Wisdom heavy, so consider Cleric or Druid for your magic. I like some druid magic on my monk and martial arts in my wild shape. Primary wisdom, secondary dexterity, tertiary constitution. Thorn whip to drag your enemies in. Spike growth to give them some troubles. Or entangle and then dance around them doing lots of little strikes.

    • @elliotbryant3459

Dex based: start with 1 level of monk (for dex unarmed strikes and 1 no-cost unarmed strike as a bonus action on your turn). Next take 6 levels of bladesinger wizard. After that you can take: 2 or levels of fighter [unarmed fighting style and action surge to cast a spell after using attack action (if going to fighter 3 I would recommend battle master so you can do more with your martial attacks) And/Or 1-2 more levels of for step of the wind mobility, flurry of blows and possibly a monk subclass (kensei or mercy could be good) And/Or more wizard levels. Starting as variant human/custom lineage for fighting initiate-unarmed fighting could help with damage if you don't want to take any fighter levels.
Str based: start as fighter 1 or 2 [armor proficiency, unarmed fighting style, action surge if 2] and then access extra attack from Valor or Swords bard 6 [RAW, blade warlock wouldn't be an option because thirsting blade's extra attack is limited to pact weapon rather than permitting unarmed strikes]. Alternatively, if you don't mind delaying spell casting you could get extra attack from fighter 5 [eldritch knight would still have a little casting] and then take caster levels in whatever caster class [bladesinger is of limited value since this character would want to use heavy or medium armor for its ac]
Or an Int based build: take 5 levels of armorer artificer and flavor the delivery of thunder gauntlets as martial arts style fighting. Then you could take wizard levels for faster caster progression and/or fighter levels for action surge, a fighting style and maybe a fighter subclass.
For any of these builds I would recommend taking mobile along the way [crusher could be good for the the str and dex builds as well]
