      I suggested that line as the greatest film comedy line ever at work. People disagreed with me, but couldn't suggest a better one.
      Fitted well in the scene, extremely clever use of language, timing and a brilliant pun, and nothing else needed to explain it, brilliant.

    Part of British culture is enjoying people like him and carry on films ,and being thankful for livng in a country which gave us them ,
    Alot of british culture has been taken away from us , and we are made to accept cultures that are on a different wave lenth to us ,
    We have always been able to laugh at our selves ,while many cultures dont know how to laugh ,
    We are only allowed to laugh at things which certain cultures allow us to laugh at,

    It’s obviously that his death was an accident. He was intending to take his mother to the chiropodist the next morning. RIP Mr Williams. Unprecedented, unique, unequalled, unsurpassed.

    • @uszatku9417
      @uszatku9417 5 месяцев назад

      But his last diary entry lists his suffering and his final words are ‘what’s the bloody point’? I’m imagining that when someone is lost in despair any plans for the next day are forgotten… but, of course, no one will ever know…

    • @nathelondon3719
      @nathelondon3719 3 месяца назад +1

      @@uszatku9417 what’s the bloody point is no indication of suicide. The fact that that was the last entry also indicates that it was an unexpected accident. 1. he was going to take his mother to the chiropodist. 2. he wouldn’t have wanted her to find him dead. 3. he would have signed off in his diary.

    • @elvisleeboy
      @elvisleeboy 5 дней назад

      @@nathelondon3719Previous entries in his diaries reveal that he was obsessed with the wish to commit suicide, particularly those entries close to his death. Why take a lethal dose of barbiturates if that was not the intention? Do you think that a person in so much despair and pain would be in a state rational enough to consider a chiropodist appointment a reason not to end it all?

    • @elvisleeboy
      @elvisleeboy 4 дня назад

      @@uszatku9417It seems ludicrous to refer to his death as an accident. He told Barbara Windsor that he didn't want to live past 65. He told Michael Parkinson shortly before he died that he looked forward to death and the relief it would bring to him. He knew full well the potential risk of swallowing those pills and what his desired outcome was.

      Not sure about that. You'd be hard pressed to find any young folk who have even heard of the Carry on films, and if they have then it's unlikely they've watched them. Most of the films are over 50 years old now, and from a completely different era, so there's little appeal for people under 25.
      I mean, the films were already almost 20 years old when I first started watching them in the 80s.

    A great documentary, just one misleading piece. At 6.40 it states that he was "born in 1926 into a working class family who lived above and ran a barbers shop in Kings Cross, London". He was actually born and lived as a child in Bingfield St, off of Caledonian Road, in a street of terraced houses (I remember the houses as a kid later on in the late 60's as I grew up close by). There's a green plaque there now at the site of where the houses were. The family later moved to the flats in Judd St, Kings Cross (seen here) and later to living above his dad's barbers shop in Marchmont St, close to Euston Square. It's still a barbers to this day. There's a blue plaque above it.

    "50 million" radio audience would be nearly everyone in the UK. I wonder if he was adding overseas broadcasts :)

    I so enjoyed watching this. I find at the end, much gratitude to Kenneth and then sadness to the loss of the like. In fact to British comedy, it’s wit, observation, language and emotive skill. All replaced with low grade waste, in a glitter package.

    Kenneth was the heart and soul of Hancock's half hour. Tony, was jealous of anyone who was funnier than him. Got rid of everyone: started with Ken, then Hattie, Bill, and eventually Sid and the writers themselves. All that was left was a shadow of a man and the most depressing last series of a sitcom I've ever watched.

    They must have spent all the money on getting Gyles to do the narration for this documentary and presumably found the Kenneth Williams impersonator and the cartoonist in an Argos fire salvage.

    As a kid I saw KW at a recording of _Just A Minute._
    As Nicholas Parsons was doing the intro KW and the others sidled onto the stage. Although he had a certain stage presence, it was no more so than anyone else.
    At one point he cracked a lavatorial joke, and I heard an old lady behind us say I heard that one at school.
    After the show, alot of people queued up to get his autograph. He was seated signing away, and singing some ribald song at the top of his voice. But while doing so he never made eye contact with anyone.
    It’s like he wanted everyone's attention, but was scared by it at the same time.
