Upper 50s lad here, and I've been whole-foods, entirely plant-based for just over five years now. My vegan pet-peeve is of those people who decide to go vegan and then discard all their leather products. I find that totally disrespectful to the animals. Here a cow has to endure a living nightmare beyond belief, has it's hide turned into leather, only to have some person toss it, because he or she is now vegan. Since you already have the leather products, at least get the best use out of it that you can until the leather item is completely worn. But don't just flippantly toss it. How wasteful, and how utterly disrespectful to that poor cow.

It's so hard in this society for people to change their diets when everything being pushed at them is fast food, junk food, oversized portions, and mostly built around meat. It takes time to change your thinking, and more time to change your diet, to learn how to not rely on meat as the meal with a side vegetable or salad. We've been programmed to eat what the food industry is pushing at us. People deserve credit for even trying. And this recipe looks fantastic, can't wait to try it!

Wise words! Thank you so much. I’ve been a vegan for 27 years, and I’m surrounded by meat eaters. When I first started, I used to be judgmental, but that approach achieved nothing. Now, I’ve shifted my perspective. Instead of pushing my beliefs onto others, I cook for everyone and even buy vegan treats for my co-workers. This approach has shown me how much more effective it is to gently guide people toward a kinder lifestyle.

My gran used to say “you get more flies with honey, than with vinegar”. ❤️💕🙏🏼….. so I really love the idea of making vegan/plant based treats for family or coworkers! That works much better than giving a lecture or criticism. Everyone loves a yummy treat!!
I started my plant based journey due to nearly dying from an autoimmune disease.
I found that Dr’s were not listening to me and pushing me in all the wrong directions.
In 2015 at just age 45, I could no longer work and was in and out of the hospital. My Dr had put me on The Keto Diet and I got even worse, by worse I literally mean I was at deaths door.
I became a type 2 diabetic (overnight) and you name the blood test, I failed it…. Even my kidneys were failing.
Lucky for me, a plant based rheumatologist just happened to visit me in my hospital room as my Dr was out sick that day (turned out to be one of the best days of my life) he said to me “have you ever tried plant based?” As he looked at my chart, when I said “no, my Dr put me on Keto, she said that was best”… he just shook his head in amazement……..He said “I have a book for you, please read it, it’s also free on Audible, I’ll go and grab a copy from my office, I’ll be right back!” I was moved to actual tears at the thought of a Dr actually caring…. Really caring!
So while he was going back to his office to get me a physical copy of the book, I downloaded it on Audible…. I popped in my headphones and listened to every word. That Book was The Starch Solution, By Dr John McDougall…. And it’s truly changed my life.
In just 3 months, all my tests, even my kidney function, were normal. Just 3 months of plant based and no oils…. I also effortlessly lost 30 pounds. I never lost weight on keto like most people claim….. nope…. I gained weight, the saturated fat was to much for me.
Anyways, my point is, everyone’s journey to Whole Foods, plant based is different.
I got here to this point for health reasons… but of course I stay for the animals, and I’d continue to do so, even if I didn’t have to eat this way, to sustain my health! ❤️💕🙏🏼

This approach genuinely works. I grew up with mostly standard Eastern European cooking, so a lot of it focused on meat. But as I had a chance to be more adventurous with my food choices and met people who cooked delicious vegan and vegetarian food, I started including more and more of it in my own cooking. I still eat meat, but I'd say my diet is around 25% vegan, 50% vegetarian and only around 25% meat based (and even here I generally avoid beef).
Not because someone yelled at me or demanded moral purity, but because a lot of people showed me a lot of big and small ways I can make my food tastier, healthier and kinder to all living things.

    • @ktsig287
      @ktsig287 3 дня назад +3

OK as someone who has justified reasons to keep eating meat (which have pretty much run out now), but doesn't really even like meat, I promise your approach works.
It's like every time we try a delicious plant based meal, it's like yeah why eat meat?
I've learned to cook so many freaking delicious vegetable dishes...
On a somewhat related note, a few weeks back my dad bought some super expensive steaks and grilled them for me and my brothers birthday.
I made this lime cilantro rice and my dad also made crispy broccoli, potatoes, and sweet potatoes.
My brothers used to looove steak. I couldn't eat it...but my brothers like each took 2 bites and then ate everything else on the plate. And got seconds of everything else.
My dad looked sad like "I thought you guys' favorite food was steak."
And one of them was just like "I dunno what happened but it just feels weird chewing pieces of flesh."
      Like that's a breakthrough....
So much more flavor and health us meat eaters have missed out on, and you're saving lives by doing what you do! Thanks for the inspiration ❤

Couldn't agree more. Vegan/vegetarian eating is not about purity or shame. It's not a religion. It's about acknowledging that causing suffering and harm against a being that can't consent (or hasn't consented) to the risk of harm is bad. Reducing suffering to the extent of your ability is good. Harm reduction. Ending needless suffering. That's the whole deal. No one gives a sh*t about your purity. Help people on their journey; don't tear them down for not walking fast enough.

It doesn't need a chronological end (e.g. abolition of all animal suffering) to have meaning. Also, what theology (i.e. careful study of the nature of God and theistic moral truths)? Reducing suffering by rejecting animal flesh and animal byproducts is a good regardless of whether (and precisely which) god exists. Not sure about your terms.

your videos get better and better. I appreciate the acknowledgment of people trying and becoming plant based at their own pace. it can be hard to do. For me I had a spiritual moment that was fostered by saving a small bird. Long story short, after nursing the bird to health and releasing it. She would come back to visit and land on my shoulder. It was then I realized ( after year and years of hunting ) that these animals, even though small like this bird, have a consciousness that can recognize a "friend" . The day that thought came into my head I went plant based.

People always try to pick holes in vegetarian and vegan lives and try to make us justify why we are like this. It’s ridiculous that we have to explain that we don’t want to cause suffering just for a taste. Try and let it wash over you because it is not worth the energy. Being kind to everyone is the way forward. I salute you. X

Man I feel this so deeply. I also saved to have a vegan leather sofa sectional. I’ve got two puppers and two cats. The material works on a practical level and jeesh, this is the technology we have available nowadays. People need to breathe, practice introspection and get outside for a walk with some alone time. We’re all doing our best. I wish people could be better to one another and all beings on this planet.

Thanks for being so open Derek. I love when you vocalise that this is about the animals - a lot of vegan content these days doesn't bring that up so much and I get it, people can be switched off by the preaching or whatever, but for myself even though I'm coming up to 14 years of it now I still need to hear other vegans like yourself talking about doing this for the animals to lift my spirit again. I could never go back, but sometimes it's frustrating to feel limited and othered so your voice always pulls me back to a good place and inspires me ❤

Thank you for your wise editorial on dogmatic vegans. They are actually hurting the cause by criticizing people who are not yet there. As you point out, almost no one goes from carnivore to full vegan overnight. It’s baby steps for most people. They need to be encouraged, not criticized. Vegans need to simply set a good example and avoid preaching.

I think you're right about the criticism of those who aren't there yet, but I haven't seen anyone discuss the other kind of "not 100% vegan." Due to the high rate of recidivism among vegans, there are vegans who've introduced animal products for . I'm not talking about the folks on YT who flip to carnivore, but those who still believe in the cause and are essentially ~95% plant-based (completely made-up percentage). As someone outside of this community, when I see vegans and influencers lambast those who are "no longer 100% vegan," it just seems like a bad move and they're jerks. The kindness in the comments for this video are, to be frank, a real eye-opener and surprise.

The challenge is that regardless of what vegans say some people label it as “preachy” to avoid their own culpability. My parents labelled me as militant because I wouldn’t pick up ice cream for them. Like Derek said, there’s a lot of grey area.

@@c6vgirlc6vgirl91 See, now you're the kind of vegan I'm used to. Bravo. It's folks like you that will keep the vegan demo unified, committed, vilified, Balkanized from everyone else, ridiculed, recidivistic and a small minority of the population. Be sure to point out your parents' culpability for an ideology you haven't been able to convince them is correct every chance you get. Reminds me of the religious argument that atheists reject religion so they can keep on sinnin'.

Your words really resonate with me. My wife and I decided to go vegan 6 months ago after slowly adding more vegetarian meals to our diet over the past couple of years. It wasn't intentional but in hindsight I see we started making this switch a long time ago and just this year consciously said we are putting a label on it, but I was thinking about that label the other day. After having lunch with coworkers and them noticing my order and asking me if I was vegetarian I told them the story of how I got here and some were encouraging but others were shaking their heads because "they could never do it" which a year ago I would have said too. But the label of vegan is just a way to help describe you. In reality I prefer to avoid animal products for environmental and health reasons. But it took baby steps to get here and that's what I tell everyone. And now I'm having to relearn how to cook and your videos have been very helpful on that front!

I have a vegan leather jacket, boots.. I have an esthetic s business that is completely vegan. I can't tell you how many times people/reps put the phone down when I ask about cruelty free, third party testing and ingredients. You have to dig deep and they don't like it. I follow you and a couple others and you are teaching me how to experiment with different plant based recipies, how to replicate with what ingredients and seasonings I have on hand (I live in a tiny caravan in Colorado. 22ft. Thank you for this video! Absolutely loved your "rant" at the end. I follow the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh and decided a year and a half ago to start living my ethics (i.e., compassion, mindfulness) and went vegan. My carnivore husband flipped out and actually got mad! I very pointedly did -not- tell him he needed to eat the way I did or anything. No judgments. I just wanted to do this to dive deeper into my Buddhism and it's been such a powerful journey - and mainly because I'm living with a carnivore: I'm having to put my practice into action -daily-! We each now buy our own groceries and make our own foods. He sometimes tries my food and, I have to say, has veeeeery slowly been incorporating a few more veg here and there. It's really beautiful watching how others can be affected by your own journey. I've noticed this with my co-workers, too! So thank you for your words at the end. I, personally, would love to hear more about how your practice has influenced your food journey. P.S. Always love the oil-free alternatives. And not because I'm looking for low-cal. I'm just trying to keep it as whole food as possible. (I'd rather have an olive than olive oil, for example.)

It shuts down the haters before they start. Love your videos. I salute you!

Thank you, Derek, for articulating so eloquently what I have long felt regarding “militant” veganism. The whole point is compassion towards other beings, human or otherwise. Not to mention that attempting to force your point of view on others is completely counterproductive. I have several people in my life who have been inspired to eat more plant based (including my brother who is fully vegan) without my ever saying a word, unless asked, about how I eat or why.
I love watching your videos as much for seeing your obvious passion for your art form as for the delicious creations themselves. Plus the love bond between you and Frankie is heartwarming to see!

It is absolutely true that we are living our own lives as individuals, and we all need to choose our own battles. To put our expectations on another person is both unrealistic and unreasonable.
I came to this channel for the food, but I stayed for the compassion. This video is a great example of that. Keep up the great work!

I’m an omnivore and have been promoting vegan restaurants to others in my region. If the food is great I want people to experience it. I agree with your perspective. The judgement of some actually hinders folks from starting on this path. I’ve been eating more plant based meals than ever before and it feels great physically.
Yet the one thing I’ve noticed with vegan spokespersons on televised debates is how militant they are. They talk over other guests constantly and are completely intolerant of other views. And this is a common theme and it doesn’t matter if it’s an American or British broadcast. These folks just don’t understand how off putting they are. They’ll never win hearts and minds with that approach and are doing the cause a disservice.

US male, 59, vegetarian since 2013, vegan since 2020. Like you, I've heard all the gripes, including from my own brother, whose been vegan longer than I have. I just can't sanction being so hardcore that you miss the forest for the trees. It's totally a journey, and some days I still want a pizza with dairy cheese on it. But I keep on keepin' on, and I tip my hat to you, Derek, for doing the same. Love your recipes, and Frankie is super cute, too.

Loved that post Derek, the dressing looks so good. I really enjoyed the chat at the end and totally get it, some folk are just so quick to judge and often jump to the wrong conclusions. I can tell that you eat plenty of veggies as your skin looks amazing! Blessings to you and the gorgeous Frankie 🥰

You are a good dude, became vegan July 26 2016 and have not had any trouble not eating animal products. I will be 66 years old this July 25, 2016. The thought of eating animal products does not ever cross my mind. My white german shepherd has not gone vegan yet I will have to check into that. Thanks for the recipes and teachings along the way.
