Buying a 30 year old W140 Mercedes....sight unseen!

- The Mercedes-Benz W140 series of the venerable S-Class was arguably the last of the over engineered, spare no expence models to come out of Stuttgart. It reportedly cost the company $1 Billion to develop with every single bit of technology at the time shoved into the W140.
This video is a 3 month ownership report on my 1992 400SEL which I bought from an auction. Amongst the photos of the listing was a service manual that had been stamped until about a year or so ago at 350,000 kms. Pretty impressive I have to say. As well as the service book were a stack of receipts for work dating back to the mid to late 2000's.

I now have a s420 long wheelbase, some wiring issues to sort. But, what a dandy. Two tone Grey, with black interior. 117k miles.
How are the costs?
You are missing the clip in the radiator shroud that holds the overflow or overpressure hose. At 4:32 in this video. There is a clip that the hose should run through and it clips in to the radiator shroud where is say TOP.
You’re lucky to have the butler walnut wood trim on a 400, cause those typically came standard with that lighter colored uglier zebrano wood which had the long dark grains. Looks way cheaper in my opinion.

Beautiful! My 99’ brilliant silver S500 is getting a paint touch up & a minor interior restoration. Only 77km so it’s been sitting. Envious of your blue interior though

Engine covers some were painted letters some where not. I think it was standard on early years then and it black starting in 96

It's turned out way better than I expected, to be honest. I've spent about aud 2k on replacing drive belt, tail shaft couplings and a heap of other rubber components.

Hi! These are beautiful cars w140's ( I have my self 3 of them , 300sd , the " famous s350turbo ,... and the gorgeous S500 with only 71kmiles ) , speaking. about The s500 ' ,95 they may run for many hundreds of miles , if the right maintenance is. done , and Not be cheap" ,.. My self I change oil ( Mobil 1 every 5 / 6 thousands miles,..( don't listen to those that are saying every 10 or 12 k miles ,.. Change cap , rotor cap every 10 - 12 k ( miles they are prone to accumulate condensation. , check spark plugs , ,.. approx 15 k miles check harness and vacuum lines ,..,.. Thats about it ,...( condenser whach for. ) ,.. IT'S a Beautiful Car ! Don't make them No More ,... Classy ,.. Today plastic they don't last ,.. GARBAGE ! it's shame for the QUEEN OF THE ROAD ,..

It is. Obviously I wouldn't have purchased it if the images on the auction site showed the car to be in poor condition. Still buying it sight unseen is a huge risk and not something that I would encourage lol
