    Great video as always. When I got my w140 about 3yrs ago. I replaced most of the failing suspension ( shocks, rubber mounts, and other suspension related items). Then the Aircon went out, softdoor, locking actuator, missing plastic parts, and a whole lots of other stuff that you’ve mentioned. Now the car is almost perfect but there is more work to be done. Like with any old cars. Is not how much you spent on the car is how much passion and joy it brings you. It’s the excitement of finding pieces that belongs in the car and replacing it to make it “perfect in your eyes”.

      How do u know if the shocks need to be replaced? My wife recently inherited a pristine condition 1993 400SEL with 47k miles (it seriously looks like it just rolled out the dealership, even the leather seats look new).
      So i found a set of 4 new shocks in the trunk and now I’m wondering if her dad was planning on replacing them. He was a huge car enthusiast and loved doing all work and maintenance but also loved having spare parts for everything. So i’m not sure if they need to be replaced or just got them as spares…

    I'm surprised that you didn't mention one of the most well know failure points on this car: the electrically adjusted rear view mirror. Apparently, drivers would try to manually adjust it and it would damage it. It was so common that MB eliminated the feature. But maybe you didn't include it as it may not have been present on later years of the 140.

    How about the wiring harness in earlier models. Is it just the engine harness or whole vehicle harness?
    W140 seem to hold its value quite well. Here, northwest coast us. I found two under 60k miles with the asking price under $19K both are 1997, one is S320 and other S500. I’m trying to find the SEC two door version but so far V12 models. That’s too expensive for DIY retired me.
    But I may try find a W126 SEC500 model that’s less complicated. Prices of nice ones are above $25K and up.

    Excellent videos and very informative! Bravo! I am considering the purchase of a 1992 MB 300SE which has 61k miles and appears to be in excellent shape. I found the car on a website and plan to look at it soon. What are the significant issues with this particular model? I have been told by a MB mechanic, originally from Germany, to avoid the model with air suspension systems. The owner states over the phone that everything “works”. Purchase price is $8,000. I’m excited about this car since it will be my 4th MB over the years, however, at the same time don’t want to buy a model with certain problems. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! DW

    • @HLClassics
      @HLClassics  Год назад +3

      A 1992 would have an early M104 engine. If the car is a late 1992, watch out for wiring harness as MB introduced biodegradable wiring harnesses around that time. The early M104 engines also use an older ignition control system that is less reliable than the newer electronic ignition control systems. All M104 engines eventually need replacement of the head gasket. W140s never came with air suspension. Our favourites for the W140 would be 1996 onwards, and we generally prefer the LWB models as it has better proportions. Having said that, nothing we say is meant to discourage you from checking out the 1992 300SE. If the car has been fastidiously maintained by the owner, we reckon it is worthwhile to consider regardless.

    Interesting video. Looking into buying one of these, and wondering whether it’s worth it to buy one with low miles for a high price, or save $20k and buy a regular one from the used market, and fix the issues as they come. I guess my question is, is low miles a good thing on these cars? Does it necessarily mean a more solid car?

    • @HLClassics

      For the age, low mileage doesn't help. We would rather buy a regularly driven car that has been maintained well.
