Elton John - Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me (Sydney Entertainment Centre 1986)

- On December 14, 1986, Elton played one of his most-performed songs in the city he has toured the most in Australia. Treating the Sydney Entertainment Centre audience to an especially emotional rendition of his 1974 hit, Elton was accompanied by a 14-member band and 88-piece orchestra, as he had been during the entire “Tour de Force” down under that November and December. This final show of the tour was made even more poignant due to the fact that Elton had been diagnosed with nodules on his vocal cords and, as he explains in his autobiography, “Me”, wasn’t sure if he would ever sing again. Thankfully, the subsequent surgery did the trick and he’s performed almost 3,000 times since.

Elton John - Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me (Sydney Entertainment Centre 1986)
/ eltonjohn - Видеоклипы
This is the first time that Elton sang this song and realized how deep and meaningful these lyrics were. This is the performance where the song transcended from 'another nice ballad' to one of the single most important and beautiful songs in his entire discography. To hear Elton, his voice in shambles, about to hit his rock bottom with drugs, singing these words and FINALLY, after 12 years, finally realizing what the words meant...by the end of the song he sounds like he's begging and pleading with God to let him have his life, and his voice back. It was the first truly great performance of the song, and regardless of his voice it has yet to be bested, period. No exceptions. The SINGLE most important performance of his entire career.
Thanks so much for sharing that!
I think I´m still standing was the first time he sang about his situation
and his underratet masterpiece is healing hands
It became the definitive recording of this song, twelve years after the original, spectacular.
Knowing the story behind this only makes this performance even more incredible.
What is this story ?
@@jeanmich6869 He had cysts on his vocal cords and was going to get surgery done on them. This was his last performance before the surgery and he was told that if it went wrong, he would never sing or talk again so he gave it his all. Thankfully, it went well!
@@PogieJoe Yeeeah... reading EJ's autobiography was a very rewarding experience
Sir Elton Jhon is 🌎 world class and one #1 of the best in his class and what he does . Being a piano artist a performer. I love ❤ his music . it makes me feel on top of the world
Reading it now!
This specific Concert, not the song mainly but the entire concert is one of the most iconic performances of all time.
Sir Elton John, the soundtrack of my entire life since 1972. Blessings to him.

before surgery: OMG SUCH AN AMAZING, SMOOTH VOICE!!
after surgery: OMG SUCH AN AMAZING, SMOOTH VOICE!!
In his autobiography Elton says that only a week before this performance he had been diagnosed with cysts on his vocal cords. He didn’t know if they were cancerous or benign, but if they were cancerous he would never speak again, let alone sing. The Dr told him he should cancel the rest of the Australian tour, but he refused. “The cost of cancelling would be astronomical, but more importantly, if there was a chance I was never going to sing again, I at least wanted to put off the day I stopped as long as I could.” “We finished the tour. Sick and terrified I stormed out of the final gig at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, minutes before the show was about to start. I didn’t make it to the car before I had a change of heart. It turned out to be the best show of all. The thought that I might never sing again carried me through it. The highlight was ‘DONT LET THE SUN GO DOWN ON ME’. My voice was rough and raspy, but I don’t think that I’ve ever performed that song better: it was always pretty show-stopping with the orchestra thundering away, but that night, every line seemed to have a new meaning, a different emphasis.” He then says that after the tour he had the operation. There was no cancer and the operation couldn’t have gone better. He later realized that it had changed his voice for good, but he liked how it sounded. “It felt more powerful, more mature; it had a different kind of strength. I couldn’t believe my luck.”
However his voice sounds amazing in this concert.
Literally reading that chapter now which is what brought me here 👌🏻
He was very lucky to have retained as much of his voice as he did! I kinda think the loss of his tenor voice was a shame but he did really well with his "New Voice"
@@katakisLives He lost the ability to sing falsetto (like in Benny and the Jets) and it deepened his voice (has more tenor).

Since 10yrs old he's been my favorite Artist. I was Blessed to be able to see him in concert. The first 25 mins. of his show I cried n cried. Couldnt believe I was there n see him with my own eyes. I cry just watching these videos. Elton John u really have no idea what u mean to me.... Thank u for being U
If they are remastering this concert then let's hope they release it in it's entirety. All 3 hours. It's magnificent.
Marcus Greig if they do decide to release it imma be the first one to order it on every platform possible😂😂
Apart from Heartache All Over The World :)
I went to each of his Sydney tours during the 80s: this one stood out, and not just for the costume. Orchestra mKes a huge difference as did the showman percussionist
@@hoorooblu Ray Cooper!!
@@BenjiDarius Well recalled!
Absolutely brilliant passionate performance with a full sounding orchestra and nice costume too. The audience must have been singing those songs and walking on air for days after. Hahaha.
One of my favorite songs from Elton
Obviously!! haha It's brilliant.
What a beautiful live orchestra arrangement from 1986 in great sound quality with a lot of dynamism!
4:33 Is it me or do those pink and yellow lights make this performance more majestic than it already is?
I want all the concerts in HD, this is so gorgeous!! Such a classic performance and one of my fav songs😍😍. Kisses from Uruguay!
Amazing Elton John is the greatest musician in his time ; wish I was born earlier to see him in person in concert;- still listening at 2019 almost 2020
Hes doing a farewell tour as we speak. Get tickets and make it happen. They're quite expensive but it's Elton John so it makes sense.
I love Elton John's music so much, I remember his music pulling me through some pretty tough times as well.
This is from 1986?! I’ve seen this footage a million times!
Is it some kind of HD remaster?
Yes, it is.
Best rendition ever
Wonderful song!!!
Stunning performance!!!
I bought this concert back in the late 1980's on VHS Cassette, only the second part of the concert (I could not afford at the time the the first part on a separate cassette). A beautiful line up of songs, but this one "Don't Let The Sun" is a masterpiece, an eternal classic, and Elton's performance here is truly majestic as he soars with the orchestra (fantastic arrangement as gradually all players and chorus join) to the grand finale... this version is the absolute best, a song for the ages !
Iconic and a great performance! Elton John is great
Such a good song! One of my favorites. I still remember the duet he did with George Michael.
Elton um Gênio que é e foi incrível em todas as suas versões e épocas, sempre se superando.
Pode crê.
Ray Cooper on tambourine,I can't wait to see this!
Entertaining and mesmerizing to watch Ray Cooper play live. He is so animated.
Ray Cooper is amazing... was lucky enough to see him during the Elton Jhon concert
This is my favorite song! The orchestra is an incredible addition 👏
Masterpiece! ✨
Wonderful Elton 👍💫💫😘♥️♥️💖💞💞💞🌹🌹🌹

Un pedazo de artista.Gracias x tú voz y Bernie Taupin x las letras.
What a performance 👏👏👏👏
I was at the entertainment centre when Sir Elton John fainted, must have been very hot with his costume and wig, but he carried on...what a legend.
This is my favorite version because of how present the piano is
Praise GOD for Elton John, praise GOD
Nice!!!!
Sou simplesmente apaixonada por essa música! ❤️ Linda, linda, linda...💞✨
Sou fã desde criança! Adoroooooo!
I feel like his voice got better and better as he grew old
He got surgery so it got deeper
But he still sounds great!
@@summermcpherson8209 yeah I agree I prefer his 90s voice to his 70s

Boa noite, bom leve não sei falar inglês sou fã de Elton Jhon Deus abençoe 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🌻🌷🌷🌻🌻🌻🌻🌹🌹🌹
Sim, pois é um grande Artista.
Today is December 14, 2020, 34 years since this incredible performance.
Absolutely Awesome Elton.
This one worked. Reg and Bernie were firing on all cylinders when they wrote it.
Kinda ironic since Elton almost refused to record it because he thought it was crap and would kill his producer with his own hands if it ended up on the album😂
This performance is at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. Elton did the last ever concert at that venue before it closed in 2015 and it was my first of his shows I attended.
I didn't know it closed. Will be strange when I finally get back to your lovely city.
Underbart!!!! Men Tyvärr Tror jag solen Är På Väg Att Gå Ner!☀️🌩/Tack För Musiken Din Hyllning till Diana Fantastisk/

Breath taking song...

I’ve seen Elton in concert 3 times and when live concerts can happen again I wanna see him a 4th time
No I don't know a better song.. a better singer..
A better singer??.......freddie mercury
@@salmanfariz1758freddie could not sing this better than elton tho.
This sounds great with headphones. I've always been fascinated with Elton and how he put this tour together. I have the 2002 Royal Opera House DVD and he talks about how that concert was the first once since the '80s (meaning this Australia tour), in which he did his pieces with an orchestra.
My fav Elton tune of all time simply put a MASTERPIECE!💜❤💜
wolfgang amadeus elton atypic great personnality long life sir elton john
Absolutely marvellous
Superb performance Elton John 🌹🎼🌹
