When my sister in law got gravely sick during our Carnival cruise, the medical Dr on staff kept her alive so she could be transferred to Orlando Health when we returned to Port Canaveral. Not having a "trach" on board, he made one from other equipment and that's what kept her breathing. Excellent care by attending physician and nursing staff on Carnival!

@@Grahamt978 Most cruise ships are Liberian flagged which means Liberian regulations apply. It is very difficult to get anything but very basic medical care in most of Liberia, it sounds like the medical practice onboard this ship is way better than an on land Liberian medical practice.

Jennie is a high risk to develop a blood clot (DVT - deep vein thrombosis) in her leg which can break off and log in her lungs - an acute pulmonary embolism - which is always serious and occasionally fatal.
She needs to see her physician for guidance regarding prophylactic treatment to avoid this complication. Her lung reserve is already compromised due to smoking and serious weight problem. She might need a venous ultrasound at some point. I hope that she will have an smooth recovery without any complications. I enjoyed watching your success since you started - it’s been a great 2023 for you and Don.

I'm a DVT, pulmonary embolism & stroke survivor. (I had life-threatening pregnancy complications & multiple surgeries including a premature "crash" C-section that caused it all).
Talk to your Doc about a daily dose of baby aspirin to help prevent clot issues *if they are a concern*.
Prophylactic treatment with Coumadin (pill) or injected Heparin both have some serious drawbacks/complications.
J's doc is the best person to assess her risks.
      I hope she feels better.
Oh, also, if she is prone to ankle injury, there are *inflatable* braces/casts that are easier to travel with (deflated), as a precaution. There's also some great braces out there for extra support/prevention (that fold up), or ask a Physical therapist about teaching you taping techniques. A few rolls of tape travel very nicely.

Your "Is that going to cost a lot of money" is why you buy travel insurance. Our trip to medical was paid 100% by our travel insurance after I sent documentation that our on shore health insurance didn't cover out of the country. Most medical centers will provide you with a wheelchair at no charge if you are seen for an injury that impairs mobility (it is considered part of the service). Obviously that was not the deal on your ship. You should submit your wheelchair rental fee to the insurance as well. NOTE Medical has routine hours, but is available 24/7 for emergencies. Our trip to medical was about $200, which included 3 prescription meds. That's probably less than I would have paid on shore!

    • @lboutard
      @lboutard Год назад +4

Hi. Can I ask a question? Do you have to pay first and get reimbursed later for all medical issues. I don’t have a lot of money. What if it was a $1000 I would not have that as I just spent it in vacation? Also I pay for the insurance that is offered by the cruise. What dose it cover -if not this up front? Thank you for your time

@@lboutard Each of us defines "a lot" differently. My friend's husband died on a Royal ship(or possibly within minutes of getting to a hospital) about 6 weeks ago (he was in his 80s and had a pre-existing lung condition, got pneumonia, ) Because the had proof that she had travel insurance, they allowed her to make a down payment on her credit card and sign that she would pay as soon as the insurance paid her. They also, in her words, were very good to her. It was a real mess because it was during the hurricane in the NorthEast ad the ship couldn't get into a port till they reached Ontario City. He spent 3 or 4 days in the ship's ICU. It wasn't safe for the Coast Guard to air lift him...sort of everything went wrong at once. But bottom line, if you have insurance they will work with you to pay what you can and make arrangements for the rest. The insurance also paid to have the creamains sent back to her for burial.

I hope she’s feeling better. In 2009, my husband took me on a western Caribbean cruise. We were on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas. I felt great when we left home to fly to the port of Miami to meet the ship. By the time we started to board, I was having sinus problems. Thought that I was feeling the climate change, it was in early November and cold back in Kentucky. Well, after we boarded the ship, I felt more and more sick. I ended up going to the ship’s medical facility. My asthma was acting up and I had developed bronchitis. I ended up needing several visits to the medical facility. I had the best breathing treatments and some excellent medical staff. My travel insurance covered everything too. I wish I could have gotten that level of care in Kentucky.

It is possible to get your own nebulizer pump and supplies. I have one in my home office due to asthma and my father has one at the kitchen table for COPD. The nebulizer pump is available for $50 or so online (you need to fax a prescription to the online seller if you go that route) and the nebulizer cups are a couple of dollars each (they are reusable). My insurance covers most of the cost and so does my father's.

Been there done that. My wife fell while we were on a RCCL cruise in St. Martin last year. Broke her kneecap. We made it back to the port in taxi. I called the ship to let them they was an incident and I needed assistance. The cruise line met us at the gate with a golf cart to get up the the gangway, where she was transferred to a wheelchair and whisked to medical. They did X-rays to confirm the break, stabilized the knee with a wrap, and provided meds to help her with pain. Wheelchair was complimentary, and we kept it for the last three days were the cruise. She stayed in the cabin once I wheeled her to it. I was the runner for food/beverages of course. When it was time to get off the ship, RCCL provided the wheelchair assistance down to the baggage claim. We got a taxi, and we made it to the airport where we also received assistance. This was all done at no cost. They told us it would cost something, but we were never charged anything. Not sure why, but we didn't ask. I figured they would charge us something to see a doctor, get x-rays, and the meds. We always have travel insurance. So we were prepared had we gotten charged. Things happen. You just have to be ready for anything! Glad the Mrs. will be okay. Thanks for sharing.

Glad she’s doing better. We just returned from a family cruise on NCL with my elderly mother. She took a fall on the ship’s step and injured her right side. Because it was a fall, they covered X-rays and everything. However, being elderly she didn’t bounce back quickly and had a lot of pain. So the doctor asked her to come back to medical the next day for follow up. Because she wasn’t mobile with the injury to her right side she was dehydrated, which resulted in the doctor wanting to run blood work. That showed she had a UTI which meant antibiotics. Even though she was well enough to tell the doctor she didn’t want the extra tests and couldn’t afford a huge bill, the doctor threatened to put her off at port as unfit to sail if she refused treatment…which would have meant our entire family had to forfeit the trip! So by the time medical was done, they’d racked up a $5500 bill! She had travel insurance but the ship spent the rest of our trip hounding her like a car warranty salesman because they required payment from her then she could get reimbursed by insurance in a few months. It was a nightmare. They maxed her credit card then made her sign a promissory note for the balance. Once home, she received an email from NCL saying they’d reduced the amount of the promissory note because they were able to get even more money from her credit card!…which she found out they’d done by somehow getting the card company to pay them more than her available balance as an emergency advance or something. So now the credit card company wants their extra money back in full plus the monthly payments, all while my elderly mother on a fixed income has to wait for the insurance to review her file and decide what and when they’re reimbursing. Needless to say we are outraged with NCL!

The boot I got was only $50 as we the crutches I'm still using. Wheelchair and doctor visit were as you described only we had to use the wheelchair for the whole 2 weeks. I believe the entire cost came to $300 and they let us cancel all our excursions and reimbursed us fully. We're filing costs with Medicare for reimbursement. All in all, I would recommend medical. Everyone on the ship took really good care of us. Shout out to all Princess employees, especially a Maitre d named Ivan.

I just came off a great group cruise withJJ Cruise, and I tripped through on my way to the tram back to the ship two days from disembarkation. I got a wheelchair from the end of the tram ride to the ship. I had cuts and bruises which the medical facility cleaned up. They also had to wrap the toe that I injured. It was getting black with a blood blister. I was able to walk short distances, but used a wheelchair from the ship to the port facility (a long walk). So I feel for you, Jenny B! I also spent 8 hrs in the ER when we got home. What a crowd! I’m much better now! Hope you are feeling much better, too!

On one Royal Caribbean cruise to NZ my mother, who was on her mid 80s, injured her arm. Tore the skin and it was bleeding. We went straight down to the Medical Centre and a lovely nurse cleaned her arm and glued the skin together. Dressed the wound, gave Mum painkillers and sent us on our way. It cost us nothing. Not one cent.
Mum's arm healed very quickly and there is no scar.

The morning of our first cruise my wife sprained her ankle so bad she couldn't walk. We were at the hotel waiting for our shuttle from Orlando over to Mariner in Canaveral.
My friend and I had to be her crutches for embarkation, and she was fairly imobile for the first 3 days of the cruise.
Luckily at dinner, we sat with the daughter of the ships Dr. who joined us for a couple meals. That sweet awesome Dr. had us come down to medical and hooked us up with crutches and a few ace bandages.
We weren't sure what the cost savings were since we were lucky to have connectins, but, it did enchance the experience for my dear wife who started out miserable.
    Best to JennyB's recovery!!
