Bart first of, sorry to hear the trouble you had went through. Those people are either horrible people or you're not fit for the job requirement which not intentionally insult your autism nor your personality. You see in life, there are much other factors of why you did not get to continue that job considered EQ (social and emotional skills) and IQ (intelligence quotient). There are also office politics and bad people who put others down because they feed off your weakness. However if you look at real winners with obstacles in their way, their determination pay off aka hard work. Helen Keller and Stephen Hawking are few examples who continue to strive. Why? Simply put. "winners win and losers lose". It's that simple. I don't know you personally but I believe you shouldn't take being fired as a rejection but a way to know what didn't work. I wouldn't call working 60-80 hours a week "success". That to me is overkill. Do these people have families? Do they take care of themselves, mentally, physically, and emotionally? Just seems strange to call overdrive and overworking yourself "success".
What about their families, their children? Does their job come first then? Their own pleasures and desires in this life. Lets not forget, a career or business is for us to provide for our family and the rest of the world, not only for ourselves.

Too many people equate work with money. You got to work to be good at so many places in your life. Work for money, work on your relations, work on your fitness and many more. You achieve success in many aspects of your life when you work hard. Don't always think job when you hear the word "Work."
It is important to work hard, but you also need to work smart. I know many people that work hard and they are not succesful. There are companies that will pay you the same if you work hard or not, so work clever.

The "smart people lean back" bit sure hit close to home. I occasionally really struggle with pushing myself after getting all those good grades back in the day. Then I found singing and dancing, which was damned hard for a logical guy, and dang I worked hard on getting those bits right. xD
Many people work very hard, all their life, and have very little to show for it. Certainly hard work is required to achieve many challenging goals. But this video seems to suggest that hard work guarantees reward, and this is contrary to what I have observed. A really smart person, with little effort, will outperform a person of merely average intelligence who has been working really hard to compete. People with innovative ideas often beat those who continue to do something the hard way.
If you find something rewarding, then you will naturally work hard at it. But "hard work", for its own sake, is not the purpose of our lives. Hard work is necessary for most people to pay their bills. I like the famous quote from President Lincoln: "My father taught me to work; he did not teach me to love it." And let's not forget the infamous quote from Nazi Germany: "Work makes you free!", the slogan displayed over various concentration camps where prisoners were worked to death.

Work is not better or worse than talent, its talented work that gets you success. There is a direction here, and its about reaching out to the most people and having a great business. You need to work hard at that and with talent to be successful. We don't talk about the failed people who work hard. Instead of saying work I would say determination is a better word and it has to be determination in a field with upwards mobility.
natural skill is not real. everything is learned and the variables that should be measured is speed of learning and comprehension
I think, work, in this video doesn't mean a job. Normaly you just do what your boss,tells you to do. Work, in this definition means, improving your skills. So you try to go over your limitations. And then, when you succed with it, you are more succsessfull. And if you do , what you love to do, even beside working, you will enjoy it, you will be relaxed, and you can show people what you've got so far. If they like it, they will "buy" it. So you succeed. If they don't like your stuff, just keep doing, what you love, and it will be better... But do it for your joy
Work smart, not hard, and make sure whatever thing/reason you're working for is worthwhile, because the harder you work for something and the longer it takes to attain it, the more the value of it depreciates; if it's not worthwhile, then it's not "success".
While hard work is a key element in success, it's not all there is to it. A good portion of the success comes identifying what you want to do in life and taking steps to achieve it. This usually means putting yourself in tough, uncomfortable situations, which the majority of people are not willing to go through. Success is more than about just hard work, it's also about making smart but hard choices and committing to these hard choices. But uncomfortable situations force you to work harder, which improves you further, which encourages you to seek new challenges while comfortable situations do the exact opposite, putting you in a state of complacency with no challenge or pressure, dulling you. So it is as much about hard work as it is about smart work.

the truth is that smart people are hard workers the only thing is they don,t admit it.This is because they had experienced it when they work hard they get smarter and being smart makes them work hard.The only thing is that they don't act over smart to show every one how smart they are.the actual truth is the people who are truly smart know that they must work hard to get their smart brain to work so that they polish their skills and get even more better in whatever field they work on.

Work Hard is no doubt a primary key to achieve anything. But this video totally focus on just one aspect of success. Success is a difficult and variable term. Not everybody takes success in form. Everybody has there own definition of success.
What about the people who work so hard all the time but never become successful
If a labourer works hard at being a labourer,he will be successful as a labourer. If a man works hard to do his job,he will continue doing his job and be good at it, therefore being a successful employee . It depends on what kind of success one is looking at. If u want to be the CEO, work hard and smart to 'reach the position of being a CEO' . A bodybuilder or athlete puts in thousands of hours of work to succeed.

Really Nice, a great insight. People say as I have heard that work smart not hard work. This actually made me delusional and as a result I started to move away from work. My experience and this video proves my guts that working really hard makes you top of everything, i mean everything as there is always an invisible Hand that helps along the way.

Everybody here is saying that this guy is underestimating smart people, and overestimating work--probably because its a ted-ed and it has a (generally) intelligent audience that was probably offended. But honestly based on just about every study you can find its true. Success is more about guts, confidence, and hours than it is about talent. It takes the average person 10,000 hours to be REALLY incredible at something, even without an ounce of natural talent or skill. If you spend long enough improving and believing honestly that you will get there YOU WILL. You can be a terrible singer and end up in a musical if you devote all your time to lessons and listening. But it's tough, its hard work, and thats what I think he's saying.

Even just in realizing you needed to devote all your time you would be using smarts over work. It would be like a math student repeatedly adding 5+5 but always getting 7 not matter how many hours they spent on it or how fast then did it, if you go with his mindset that work wins over smarts...

I work hard all the time. It feels like all work and no play. The issue isn't so much a matter of working hard, but working hard at the specific things that will return the most appreciable results. You can work really very hard to make yourself a nice gazebo for your back yard, but if you do that while ignoring the other aspects of your life, you may lose out on those other things.

There are no tricks or shortcuts, hard work is the key to success.
First you have to define "success". Oprah may be rich, famous, and influential, but I, personally, for me, don't consider never seeing sunlight successful. If I were Oprah I'd wake up one day and say, "What happened? Where did my life go?" And by then it would be too late to buy a life.
+Silkendrum although you have a point, consider also that the same thing applies the other way around. Untapped talent or/and tardiness, is what we regret also in the future. Success in the video is defined as doing something and being considered the best at it while loving what you do or/and working hard to be the best at what you do - and as basis for quantitative rationalization = net worth. There are alot of people whom share your views, but hopefully it is not to justify tardiness.

Tardiness? I didn't mention tardiness. How did that get in there? I'm just saying that "success" as defined in this video might bring you a lot of acclaim and money, but at a cost I'm not willing to pay. I would define "success", a successful life, differently.
+Silkendrum Hard workers don't work hard because they have to, they want to, they enjoy it, they enjoy the grind, and the rewards. Some people enjoy basic lifes styles, where they get a 9-5 job and get paid an average salary which is fair enough, but the thing about easy life goals is you end up wanting more from your life, that's when you find the time to start bitching and moaning about things in your life. If being outside and family life is important to you then you can find your dream job catering around those areas and still work your butt off and put the time in, because you enjoy it. It's not about money but the passion and productivity.

I retired quite comfortably at 51. I lived well when I was younger, but not extravagantly, studied the markets, and invested every spare penny wisely - wisely enough that the recent market dips didn't affect me. I saved for things I wanted, never took out loans, not even for cars. I bought to please myself, not to impress neighbors, always exactly what I wanted, never more or larger than I needed. I now have no debts, a load of assets (enough that they continue to grow on their own even as I draw from them), and I can do anything and go anywhere I want. I consider my life successful and productive. I'm happy.

Let's be honest, GPA cannot accurately measure intelligence, especially in the context of US public education.
Also, stupid people tend to think they're smart because they don't realize how little they know, while smart people tend to think they're stupid because they understand how much there is to learn.
And finally, Hard work alone does not lead to success (measured by an accumulation of wealth) but rather innovation. Anybody can pick up a shovel and dig a ditch, but when you can dominate or monopolize a market, and/or there is a higher demand for your product or service (especially when your product or service is highly specialized) you can accumulate more wealth for equal or less effort. You can also increase the net profit from your own effort if you can adapt your methods to be more efficient (work smarter not harder.)

All that babble from rich people about working hard is just a facade to dupe us in to working hard for them. The truth is, they spent all their time playing office politics and power games, not doing actual work. If you spend your time working hard, you'll just end up getting fired by those who spend their time playing office politics.

Everyone who's saying "money is just a medium by which you'd measure worldly success" stop lying to yourselves, you want money, I want money, we work for money. No matter how you view it, it's always good to have cash in your pocket and once you've secured that you can move on to fulfill your own definition of success. If by "more efficient and faster" you mean just work(like just doing physical or mental activity to get something done which is the impression of "work" i get from the video seeing how it's suggesting work is more important than using your brain) instead of improving your work along the way which you would HAVE to use your smarts, then i think you've missed the point and aren't crediting your smarts in there...
I would guess that when you say "more efficient" and even faster you have to have used your brain to figure out/learn/practice how to be more efficient and how to get faster right? so therefore IF you did NOT use your smarts then you would only be working harder not more efficient or faster. So how can work "win" over smarts if you need to be smart to be able to work better? it just doesn't make sense if you think about it. I'm not sure why you aren't crediting your intelligence for your being better/faster at the work you do.

The 8 traits the Richard speaks of are going to help you a lot in life but there are other factors that are out of your control no matter how hard you work. I like what he said about smart people not working hard because they rest on their smarts.

The best way to do work that you dont want to do is:
-plan it before you do it, set the time when you are going to start.
-dont feel when you do your work
-thin negatively when you work, work so you dont get fired, dont work so you get promoted.
