38 years later and I still get instant goosebumps whenever I hear this masterpiece! You simply cannot beat Iron Maiden.
Lilly, here is the synopsis and moral to the story. A mariner is at a wedding and tells a story to the guests. He starts out at sea and kills the bird of good omen, thinking instead it was a bad omen. Because he did this he and and his crew are cursed and the boat is adrift (the slow portion of the song). The crew start dying, 4x50 men (200). The mariners attitude changes and he blesses the creatures which lifts the curse. The mariners sights another boat and is elated and his sins are forgiven by the hermit. The mariners story teaches a moral to the wedding guests to love all things that God made. I suggest going back and read the lyrics Lilly.
Excellent!!
He shot the albatross because he thought it was bringing them bad luck. Although the appearance of the albatross coincided with them getting out of the ice they were stuck in, they then found themselves without any wind. the Mariner blamed the albatross and shot it. It's a very shaky justification which is kind of the point.
@@philsswweightlossdiary2944 Thanks. I should have researched it. I'll edited my comment. This is the answer I found - He mariner shot the albatross because he believed that it was an unlucky omen and the source of their diminished wind. He believed that, once the albatross was dead, the wind would return, and they would be able to cross the ocean at a much greater speed
I read the poem before I heard the song Is you dailed it right on the head
just get and read the book if you want the full experience, plus i use to have this on cassette and VHS back in the day was your age, Lilly
Glad you did the Live after Death version. The dvd concert is amazing !! “Scream for me long beach”🔥
I was at the Long Beach concert! Up the Irons
I was there night number 2.
I like the other live version that isn't as rushed as this one. I was laughing for a couple of minutes when the singing started because it's quite hilarious when it's this fast x) Don't get me wrong though, I love Iron Maiden ♥
Watch the whole “Live After Death” concert. It’s Maiden at their peak.
I'm drunk as Fuk,but not so far gone... legendary band... love these guys! Infamous!
Had the pleasure of seeing them on this “Live After Death” tour. Best concert I ever saw. Couldn’t hear right for two days, but it was totally worth it. Saw them in a 10,000 seat arena and they just tore the place down. Center seat, upper balcony. It was so loud (but crystal clear) that you couldn’t hear the person next to you shouting. Loved every second of it. Ah, to be young again. Hard to believe that was almost 40 years ago.🎉🎉
I was there, too! Night #2 in Long Beach. Scream for me Long Beach!!
Fear of the Dark live is amazing. 250,000 Argentinians singing along to the chords of the song. Shivers every time.
That crowd was in Rock In Rio 2001
Rio 300,000 fans
@@tonyperez3920 I thought so at the time, but later it was revised to 250,000...they said the last day with RHCP had 330,000 but the place just didn't fit that many people.
The BEST live versión of this song. Period 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Nope. Period .
Flight 666
Flight 666 and Live in Donnington suck. Worst live albums from them. Period!
@@JD.Knightserious? the 666 version? The L.A.D. one is simply the "MADE IN JAPAN" of metal lives. And captured the and captured the irons at their greatest peak. how can you say that the 666 is superior.

The studio version is as good as any live performance.
That Powerslavve album was my first album tripping , i was feeling the waves shaking my imaginary boat
the studio version is better ...
The drummer is out of his frickin MIND!!!
Sucks they blocked it, but you got to see it. This is an epic song. Maiden's longest song at the time. We read this poem for my Brit Literature class my senior year and the teacher let me bring this song in and play it for the class. She got into it. A cool teacher. Another great song that tells a detailed story is Alexander the Great. No live performance of that song though.
yes, on the current Future Past tour, they play Alexander the Great live in concert for the first time in 37 years! It's great!
Another song i hope the band plays live in concert, before they call it quits, is Empire of the Clouds. 18 minutes of great metal, as Maiden is famous for! Bruce will need to put a piano on the stage, or maybe a synthisizer.
This used to be one of Iron Maiden’s longest songs, until they wrote Empire of the clouds. It’s still an absolute epic masterpiece and one of my favourites.
The poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is where the saying of "having an albatross around your neck" arose and symbolizes a burden or unpleasantry that you just can't rid yourself of. An albatross is considered good luck in maritime lore, so by killing it the mariner has cursed them with bad juju. No wind for the sails, no tide to move them, and water, water everywhere but nor a drop to drink(can't drink saltwater)
the best live performance of iron maiden it´s "Dance of Death" (from dvd
"death on the road") it's so dramatic and theatrical.
The live version of "Children of the Damned" from Beast Over Hammersmith, 1982 is up there when it comes to best live Maiden performances. "The Clansman" from Rock in Rio, 2001 is another one.
Oh to be a youngster these days and having almost 45 years of good modern Metal to sink your teeth into anytime you want. But for those of us who grew up in the 80s, we only had a few years worth of bands and albums to listen to. I didn't seriously get into music until 1986, but even then, the bands that I was interested in, only had 2, maybe 3 albums out, and so we got intimately familiar with those albums. Now, with so many more bands and albums out there, it's hard to distinguish between one band and one album from the next. But in some way I still envy Gen Z and their ability to have access to the 45 years of modern of music. I say that the modern era started in the late 70s...78, 79, somewhere in there, because prior to that, music still had that 60s, and 70s psychedelic sound to it. Very simple guitar riffs with no layering, and tinny to no bass sound at all. Oh there were exceptioms, but for the most part, modern Rock and Metal really didn't get started until 1978/79. Boston got started in 1976, and that was one of those exceptions.
Over the years Bruce has gotten better at his diction (the ability to sing words and you to understand him). If you were to watch the 2006 flight 666 version you would have been able to understand every word. I personally perfer newer maiden live tracks from flight 666, Rock in Rio, and En Vivo. The only exception is hammersmith 1982, it is an amazing live album where bruce is at his all time peak of his younger days.
I think the later versions feel more powerful, partly having the 3rd guitarist and partly being masters of their art I feel.
Yeah I was thinking the same... if story telling is the key requirement the other later shows are much better.
I think Flight 666 was 2009…
@gerardoa. I was wrong, the tour was 2008 to 2009.
They never fail 👍😜🏴
I saw Maiden play this song live on the Somewhere Back in Time tour in 2008. It was just as good then as it was in 1986! Dual melodic riffs during the solo is even more amazing when there's three guitarists
Also another banger from Powerslave is the chugging monster The Duelist well throw a dart any song from this album is banging Back in the village is a great one as well ugh what am I saying? The whole album is a beast
Couldn't agree more Edward. My favourite album from my favourite band. Up The Irons 🤘🏻🇬🇧🖤
I really wish that they would play this whole album in it's entirety. 2024 will be it's 40th anniversary. I wonder...
I so love that there are so many young people discovering this band and more older Metal.. I am an old feller but we need this genre to keep going. So many classic metal bands so little time, Spread the disease. Queensryche!!!!
Original/studio versions for a 1st time reaction, always
..agreed, for best acoustic experience
Dance of death en vivo is one of their best live performances, Bruce really gets theatrical with his performance and story telling on that one and the rest of the band is running around like crazy as well. As Iron Maiden got older the live performances got heavier and refined…I consider the En Vivo or flight 666 live shows to be their prime! Please do us all the favor and pleasure of reacting to that one!
My favorite song by them.. I've heard it a million times and still listen all the way through.... it's best to learn the story with a lyric video I think then go to live
Watch that lyric video with the AI pics. Great stuff
@@thisbliss81 that one was really cool and explained it well
Lillie I'm always baked to listen to iron maiden and love watching you baked too
I wish they still played this live. It was a great tour.
Dance of Death live is one of my favourite
It's a great song, and if you've ever seen them do it live with the effects, it is impressive Great way for that album to end too.
As I have understood this song (interpreting a much older work that comes from ??? time ) :
Killing the albatross was bad luck, a senseless cruel act, so he and the ship were cursed. Their sails were calmed, ran out of water, and basically all died of thirst (except him, because death's companion spared him as a cruel lesson). So only once he's truly remorseful does albatross fall off, the curse lift, and his (undead) crew sail the ship back home. Once the mariner arrives back (as the only actual survivor), and is with his son and the harbour pilot, and the religious "hermit", the ship sinks. The mariner's penance for having been spared from death is to tell his story for the rest of his life, as a warning against the kind of arrogant cruel sin he had committed.
Lilly, you will love this!!! MASTERPIECE!!! My favorite
The very first time I saw Live after Death was when it premiered on MTV back in '85 I still have it recited on a Vhs tape now own it on dvd
This tour was the first concert I ever went to. I was 15 and went with my brother and some friends, and was absolutely blown away. It was in 1985 and the opening band was Accept. Since then I've gone on to have seen them a dozen times now and they still blow me away....up the irons!!!!
🎸Just an amazing song i saw this Powerslave tour in Philly💯
If you haven't had the chance, Lilly Jane, I recommend you see the full concert. One of the best they've done.
Yay! Awesome reaction! The choker is back! You have an awesome choker collection!
Thanks for doing this one LJ!!! The best Maiden tune ever imo!
one of my favorite maiden songs its a banger
I saw this tour (Jan 15, 1985 in Worcester, MA) I was 17. A split bill with Twisted Sister. Great night!!
does anyone else think bruce was still finding his voice in the early years???.i think the newer versions of this song with bruce in his 40s/50s singing is so much clearer in his vocabulary
Saw this original tour, November 1984. OMG I said it out loud! Even had a great seat. Glad you like it - it sure is holding up against time.
One of the best recorded live shows of all time!!!
My first concert ever was seeing them on their World Slavery Tour in SF four days after this was filmed. Was almost impossible to see through the mj smoke haze in the Cow Palace. Good times! I've seen them a dozen times since, and when they pull out this tune, it's epic! UP THE IRONS!!
ironically, back in the day they always had 'no smoking' signs all over at their shows!
Thanks Lily Jane for playing this awesome song by this great band, and for being very pretty❤and at least she was not blocked 😁
Always great reactions! \m/
"The Number of the Beast" "The Evil That Men Do " "Dance of Death" "The Clansman" "When the wild Wind Blows" Pashendale" "A Man on the Edge" all have good stories to go with them.
Saw this live from the second row Providence Civic center March 30th 1987 🔥🤘🎶
It's where the saying "Albatross around my neck" comes from meaning an dreadful burden that one must endure.
This whole concert was awesome, World Slavery Tour back in 1984-85. Listening to the album sets the tone to watching it live, in my opinion. We did that back in the day, listen to the album and impatiently wait for the concert to roll into town. I was at the this show in Albuquerque in '85. Love your reactions.
Two cracking live songs to review are The Clansman and Sign of the Cross both from Live in Rio you won't be disappointed.
I just never get bored listening to and playing Rime. A total masterpiece.
For one of the greatest live Iron Maiden performances in my opinion is "The Red and The Black" from their 2015 album "Book of Souls". It too is about a 13, 14 minute epic of a song that has some awesome guitar solo harmonies going on between all three guitarists. Yes, all three. When Bruce came back to the band in 1999, he brought back Adrian Smith, who left the band after the 1988/89 Tour for Seventh Son. And instead of the replacement guitarist leaving, he stayed because by then he'd been a part of the band for 10 years, which was longer than Adrian's original stint. So Maiden has been a three guitarist band ever since 2000.
The thing is about hearing the lyrics is that most fans know the lyrics so it’s easier to understand in live versions. It’s like when you hear the ghost hunter voice recording, you have a hard time hearing the voice unless you know what it is supposed to be saying
I went to the Saturday and Sunday shows of this concert where this video was recorded. Check out "running free" from this album.
Just purchased the for the umpteeth time the other weekend!!!Up the Irons!!
@@kenbongaards554 you and I put at least one of their kids through college. 😂
An epic musical story adventure filled with peril. My all time favorite from them
Good job! Thats EXACTLY the story! Wow Im impressed!
I say at least something off their best live album, so good it was recorded and released as a live album, "Live After Death" (1985) when they were in their prime.....visually and audiowise....the song "Powerslave" is amazing, but just audio wise "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is also amazing!
This song is on my Top 5 favorite and best Iron Maiden songs EVER. This is the Iron Maiden we love. This song is maybe one of the first Progressive Metal songs ever surface in the 1980's. Powerslave (1984) is my favorite album, and then Somewhere In Time (1986), Seventh Son Of A SEventh Son (1988).
I still have Live After Death on vinyl. Still my favourite live Maiden album along with Rock in Rio and Maiden England '88
The best live Iron Maiden performance is the whole Rock in Rio show from 2001. Everybody was on point, Bruce and Adrian Smith were back, they debuted 3 guitar lineup and absolutely dominated every track.
Read the lyrics. The storytelling here is second to none.
Saw them in Nashville on this tour Twisted Sister opened .
Back in the 80's I was still learning english, when I heard this song for the first time. I didn't have its lyrics, therefore I did a lot of guessing, what's he is singing about. At the same time I saw Hemingways' movie adaptation of The old man and the sea, with Spencer Tracy. In my mind I combined to two and it stuck with me for a long time that, that this is the music version of that novel :D
Check out "Sign of the Cross" live from Rock in Rio 2001. Some really nice guitar playing.
powerslave is one of their best album,(flash of the blade)🎸🤘🎸
Along with Pink Floyd's "Echoes", "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" is the greatest long song ever created.
Check out 7empest
Empire of of The Clouds.
Not to keen on this particular live version.
I went to all four nights of the Powerslave tour at the Long Beach arena.
I was at Maidens first concert in North America for this tour. Halifax Nova Scotia. Glad I'm old and got to see a ton of these great bands.
It's based on a poem of the same name by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
Love seeing new reactions like that. Maiden forever \m/
Coleridge was I poet I learned of in year 8 (so around 14) and we studied his works in English. Of course, by then I was already captivated by metal, and I convinced my English teacher to play this song in class, and while it got a few "funny looks" (it was the late 80's, the satanic panic had not died off), it was received pretty well. (the artwork for live after death, not so much :P )
If I were going to ask you to examine the song, I would consider it as different movements, much like classical, there is the intro of the mariner being the hero, then the middle of him paying the cost, then the end where he "comes home" after the quest, it is the quintessential "hero's journey".
I don't listen to this song very often, it requires the right mindset to really "get it" (I don't listen to the wall that often either for the same reason), but it fills me with a sense of........ rightness of the world that perhaps, just perhaps we still deserve hero's.
Oh, and if you get the chance, listen to infinite dreams (maiden, 7th son album), while baked, in the back of a car lying down over somewhere very "hilly" so you get the sense of up and down in the car. We used to call it the infinite dreams roller coaster, and it was a mental ride.
UP THE IRONS!!
another great story telling song is To Tame A Land, then you got alexander the great, seventh son of a seventh son, and god so many more
IRON MAIDEN is AWSUM !!!!! Up The Irons!!!!!
This song was actually from a poem for children you can get the book from any library and by the way "Iron Maiden" is my favorite fucking band ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and your reaction was spot on.😘
Goats of Metal.
Dance of Death En Vivo performance i highly recommened its like watching a great theatre performance mixed with high energy metal music on too of it!
Live after Death one of my favorite Maiden live albums
Lilly
Years later during Iron Maiden's Flight 666, they played this song again, but three guitarists: Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Janick Gers.
I hate that everyone does this one instead of the Flight 666 one lol
Bruce sounds a lot better on the Flight 666 version.
Definitely Empire of The Clouds,
Fear of the Dark live in Argentina
and Dance of Death live in Chile are must-see videos
To this day anyone working at sea will do whatever they can to protect the albatross, the bird of good omen.
Another good storytelling song from Iron Maiden is called "Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.)", which tells about the life of Alexander the Great, the ancient Macedonian king! One of my favorite Maiden songs of all time alongside this and Aces High! I definitely recommend making a reaction to Alexander the Great as well!!!
The moral of the story is what not to do when a bird sshits on you
WOW!!!!! JUST WOW😛
my 2nd favorite live iron maiden song is the trooper rime of the ancient mariner is my favorite
Watching this concert on vhs is what made me a huge Maiden fan. That was back in 87. Best decision I ever made. The best version of this is on Flight 666. It adds a third guitar player and shows more of the crowd reaction. But you should definitely watch Live After Death all the way through. It is way ahead of its time.
This song was my first exposure/experience to the "epic" metal song, that told a more richer definitive story than any other song I had heard up til then (after all, how much detailed story can you really cram into the average 5 minutes or less).
Another great song for story (and music) is "the odyssey" by Symphony X. Incredible song
Iron maiden masterpiece
Music was real back then and i also love how little he gives a fuck lol :)
The best Iron Maiden performance (as a concert) will always be the one that you just saw - Live ....After death!
It’s tough to narrow down Maiden’s “best” performance because they always bring it live. But one of the best would have to be Fear of the Dark, at the Rock in Rio fest (Brazil). I think it was around 2005 or somewhere in the early 2000’s. I would have loved to be be at that show!
This is the one. 🤘
Maiden is famous for their galloping guitars.
Iron Maiden's best live songs... "Phantom of the Opera" (live, 1980)... 'Heaven can wait' (live, 1988)... 'Seventh son of a seventh son' (live, 1988)... 'Afraid to shoot strangers' (live, 1993)... 'Fear of the dark' (live, 2000)... 'Blood brothers' (live, 2000)... 🤘🔥🤘
One of the best live performances in my opinion is 22 Acacia Avenue 1982 beast over Hammersmith there is so much energy in that performance it’s crazy and it’s one of my favorite songs to listen to while fried
Awesome song Up The Irons 🤘
I enjoy the flight 666 version more even though I saw them live on this tour. 7 times in my life and not a bad show from them
Hallowed be thy name live is a good one!!!
Their most energetic performances are ones in which Clive Burr was their drummer (1979 - 1982). Clive had a more aggressive drumming style that really propelled the band's music. I would recommend checking out songs from their March 1982 show at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. "Murders In The Rue Morgue" or "Sactuary" would be good choices.
If you want Maiden at it's rawest you gotta check out their first album. Self titled Iron Maiden. It's more of a punk metal album and what really makes it that is their original singer Paul DiAno!
She's not aware of the song's literary origins? You do surprise me...
Maiden fan since 1988 first concert No Prayer for the Dying with Anthrax as guest was awesome i think ive seen then like 14 times live every concert is amazing and as Maiden Fans say we are no fans we are a family seen police cars driving away like heck they give us coke fanta but nothing is happening just a good mood
Try Fear of the Dark live @ Rock in Rio. It is one of the best live songs ever.
Just wanted to say you're awesome and wanted to fill you in on Bruce Dickinson. Bruce's mom was an Opera singer and you can see that he learnt frim her with his signing. He is also an actual airplane pilot. I love this band! Keep up the good reviews! Thanks!
Was a pilot, he's too old now.
the absolute best metal song and performance whenever they do of all time , holy wars from Megadeth just under but this is classic . love love love
Hello to ("yall") great job
