"Aaah, Mr Vincent, I have seen all of your films... And I found them... very amusing." Cheers for finally getting around to reviewing this chaps, a most excellent choice cut from 1985!
Why does RUclips recommend dumb videos about stupid pranks, talk shows, or guys doing makeup when this is what I really wanted to watch the whole time. Just a couple of really down to earth, honest guys talking about stuff they are passionate about.
This flick is my supreme and ultimate vampire film, top of the heap. Everything is fantastic here, from effects to camera work to music to cast to script. It can be so funny, and then it can be almost heart-breaking. I'm glad you mentioned Evil Ed's ghastly-yet-hilarious red hair (which I call his Raggedy Anne look), I mean, that is just super, visually. The character is great fun; you either knew a kid like that once or you were that kid in some ways. This film belongs to Roddy McDowall. He brings so much to it, I cannot imagine it without him. Thanks ... from a fan in Pennyslvania
This movie has a special place in my heart. I was 8 years of age in 1985, and I'd stop everything else to watch it - EVERY time it came on. HBO feature presentation. Good stuff. Jerry Dandridge was a vampire rockstar, and easily the silver screen's best of the best. Right up there with David Kessler in An American Werewolf In London. 👍
Plotholel: While Charlie is only a FAN of movie vampires. Consulting Evil Ed, who is really into the occult, is to assure Information that deals with REAL vampires.
@08:35 I wonder if Francise Ford Coppula 'barrowed' the idea that Dracula pursued Mina because she was the striking image of his late wife, Elizabetha, from "Fright Night".
In the Palladium RPG's, a stake in the heart just puts a vampire in stasis. Some primary vampires will keep a horde of staked vampires to keep from using too many "resources".
I love this movie. My wife introduced it to me 8 years ago and I can’t believe I missed this movie growing up. Thank you for this amazing review you guys I’m subbed for life
The performances alone in this movie make it great. Made in the 80s just makes it even better. Strong nostalgia with Fright Night for me watching it now as a adult.
I absolutely love this movie! Seriously...as a young kid it was scary, but not so that I couldn't handle it. Now as an adult...it's just such a fun movie. Chris Sarandon is just fantastic as the vampire. I love how he just doesn't see a reason to kill any of them. He does eventually, but really if he was forced to deal with them, you get the sense he would just as soon turn them all...the way he deals with Ed says as much. Just a great villain.
Great job boys. This is one of my favorite movies. Bella's too. Although... now every time I do something stupid... She says in that really shrill voice: OH.... YOU'RE SO COOOOOL, BREWSTER! That's probably been the only negative...
Hi where are you boys from in england you two are fucking legends you are the best at what you do you crack me up please get back in touch you both know your films
i like to think jerry and billy were close friends almost like brothers . but billy i dont think he was a vampire . but yup this was one of the best movies ever one of them movies i think shaped the 80,s much like the lost boys . its on my top 20 list of movies along with lost boys
Jerry dandridge was never evil Just misunderstood and lonely also Dean Cameron in Rockula both great guys as a kid i wanted these 2 to meet in an argument like Rockula saving Jerry at the end of Fright night and teach him how to live :)
Brilliant film and still love. I love Part 2 as well you can really believe 'Regine' was 'Gerry' sister, she studied his manerisms and ways from the first and incorporated it into her performance. Julie Carmen was/is stunning. And Roddy Mc ffs, absolute LEGEND!!!
Just watched this, what a great review. 2 things come to mind about what you discussed. Firstly, the use of mirrors in the nightclub. Despite the 80s vibe, this was possibly a homage to the ballroom scene in Roman Polanski's 1967 movie The Fearless Vampire Killers. Secondly, the plothole about Charley 'forgetting' how to deal with vampires, by asking Evil Ed for advice on how to deal with them, despite watching all of those movies. Either Charley knows the films are made up, and feels that Ed has the 'real' information on dealing with them, or it's deliberate juxtoposition with Peter Vincent's character. Whereas Charley forgets his knowledge, Peter 'knows' about vampires, but when faced with the real thing, becomes cowardly? The whole movie, how it came together, and the performances, screenplay and direction all come together wonderfully. Definitely one of the best vampire movies ever made.
Jerry’s caretaker reminds me of the James Mason character from Salems lot; he was also not a vampire but was resistant to more damage than a normal person
This ranks as #2 in my alltime favorite vampire movies: 1. Interview with the Vampire 2. Fright Night 3. Lost Boys 4. Blade 5. Vampires (John Carpenter version)
Evil Ed died guys, he reverted to human in death... his laugh at the end was a soundbyte from the shop scene earlier that was just thrown in cuz it sounded cool...thank God that FN3 script never came to pass
Tom Holland is the most underrated horror film writer/director ever. Not saying he's THE best, but he's definitely one of the best, but he is THE most underrated. Holland gave us Fright Night, Child's Play, and Psycho II (IMO, a better movie than Psycho). Unfortunatley due to health issues, we haven't seen his name attached to too many projects, but he deserves to be in the "hall of fame" along with John Carpenter, Wes Craven, and Alfred Hitchcock, and the like. He did "Thinner," too, while it doesn't have the critical reviews of some of his other films, I personally love that one, too, and find it quite enjoyable.
I was an 80's child and this was the first horror movie I watched and I loved it. It has stood the test of time for me and I watch it every year just remembering the times in life when things were simple and fun. Didn't know there was a part 2 I will definately have to check it out. As far as the remake I am not interested for all my experiences with remakes have been negative. Must be a generational thing
I saw Fright Night on opening night and was transfixed from start to finish. And watch this as well as Night of the Comet so often that I can mouth the entire script. LOL
Great point about the plot hole(!) In all the times I've watched this film, I can honestly say that it never crossed my mind. It's compounded, too, in the sequel, now that you mention it... 13:36 -Charlie absolutely HAS read "Dracula", because he implores his girlfriend in that film (sadly, NOT Amy... but you have to change things up at least a little bit the second time around!) to read it because it's a "Truly great book!" Love your channel; your reviews are making the (current as I write this) Coronavirus pandemic and the actions of so many humans resulting from it so much more tolerable!
As for the Jerry giving Charlie so many chances to just give up, I think Jerry was being pragmatic. It's one thing for what I assume are random prostitutes to be desapearing around the town, but if your teenage middle class neighbor goes missing, *specially* after making some ridiculous accusation to the police about Jerry, one could pretty much bet that the police would want to question the single dude who lives with another guy in the next house. Perhaps take a look around the house, which I supose would got red flags under any test to detect blood and, at the very least, Jerry would risk having himself taken to questioning during daytime, which would be... problematic. :-D Of course Jerry could just move on to another place, but he probably just wanted to avoid the headache.
I love this movie. I first seen this movie on vhs full screen and watched it over and over again. When I bought it on DVD in widescreen, it was like watching a new movie. This movie has to be seen in widescreen. There is so much happening in the movie on the periphery that full screen misses it all. Also some scenes in full screen are out of perspective. Watch it in widescreen!
We were on a school trip when this played in the theatre .. everybody wanted to see The emerald Forest .. as the only one, I watched Fright Night 😁 My dinner was in the oven!!!
You guys pump out a great amount of material. I love that your reviews are longer than the regular 20 minute length. I still think Gary should bic his head and grow the beard out. Reminds me of the guy from Heat that fucks up the armored car heist.
Well, not that I’m an expert vampire slayer or anything. I’ve only slain maybe...eh...none, but the stake through the heart mythos is a bit of a misunderstanding. It does actually come from medieval vampire lore, but it wasn’t what killed a vampire. The stake was only suppose to anchor the vampire to it’s coffin. Decapitation and Fire were supposedly the two sure ways to kill a vampire. I have no idea why the hell I’m even bringing this up.
Amy is Marcy from the hit sitcom married with children….and that’s why she never came back for the Sequel of this movie….Fun fact she was also like 27 here
Gotta hand it to the remake (which isn't really that bad, IMO, just lacking an essential 80's nostalgia style), they at least pulled off making Jerry way more villainous and monstrously unsympathetic. Where this Jerry has learned the value of blending in and not overestimating his powers as a vampire, remake Jerry only blends in when it suits him and lords his powers over the human characters to the point he underestimates them leading to his inevitable downfall.
great poster... but can't say i ever rewatched it. i seem to remember someone getting a pencil stabbed in a hand and the "invited in" detail. I think my friend and I watched The Gate around this time too - which i enjoyed more.
Charlie's girlfriend also played Marcy on Married with Children but I don't know if that aired in the UK it was a very popular show in the United States in the 80's and 90s.
I don't think he missed the heart. Not all vampire fiction uses Buffy rules. In some vampire fiction, staking doesn't kill the vampire, it just paralyses them, allowing you to do something more permanent, like burning the vampire to ashes and scattering the ashes. In those universes, removing the stake before you take the additional steps revives the vampire. Indeed, "Fright Night" rules are interesting in that it favors those versions of the vampire legends that makes them move badass. Crosses only work with faith. Stakes don't kill, they paralyze, and they take a while to do it. Ed almost gets the stake out of his heart before becoming completely paralyzed. Later in the movie, Jerry yoinks the stake out of his heart. The movie seems to take the "everything from the movies works, but not as well, being subtly weaker in a way that makes the vampires ten times more dangerous" approach.
I think there's a number of curveballs that are thrown at us... Evil Ed / Evil Dead and "Peter Vincent" being a play on Peter Cushing and Vincent Price from Hammer Studios. Personally... my favorite part in this review was where they point out Peter Vincent was such a bad actor that he pointed the wooden stake the wrong way (ie, the sharpened end towards himself). He didn't give his victims any chances, though, did he? If you had a serial killer next door, would you ignore it because he told you he'd leave you and your family alone?
Loooove this movie! been enjoying it since the 80's when i was too young to be watching it lol. I like how you pointed out the possible gay relationship between Jerry and Billy. I would take it even farther to say that alot of the plot points can be seen as a metaphor for closeted homosexuality and the fear of such in the 1980's. The attitudes of the story towards its characters greatly reflect the attitudes of the dominant culture toward gays at that time (and even today to a lesser degree). What if Charlie is a frustrated closeted gay teen who is struggling to suppress urges that society deems abominable? Jerry represents everything Charlie is trying not to be but is. Peter represents everything Charlie wants to be but can't. In the end, Charlie finally defeats "Evil" (queerness), and "good" (heterosexual normalcy) prevails. I don't think that subtext was intentional but it works for the whole film including side characters, think about it. Cheers!
All time favorite movie! I never get tried of watching this film. Horror and comedy combined. Great prosthetics and makeup in the film. The music is good. The acting is good. Overall great film. Great review, guys!
I love Fright Night, and I agree that the remake is absolutely awful. And as one of you guys said, it's soulless. When people wonder why David Tennant doesn't have a movie career, show them his scenes from the remake, and also that awful St Trinians remake, or those 'Xmas' movies.
Chris Sarandon’s performance was iconic, and the soundtrack is awesome.
"Aaah, Mr Vincent, I have seen all of your films... And I found them... very amusing."
Cheers for finally getting around to reviewing this chaps, a most excellent choice cut from 1985!

because unfortunately that's what most people watch
My favourite vampire movie of all time. Jerry Dandridge is the king!!
This flick is my supreme and ultimate vampire film, top of the heap. Everything is fantastic here, from effects to camera work to music to cast to script. It can be so funny, and then it can be almost heart-breaking.

Couldn't agree more, well said.
@@brendancaldwell7755 Thanks very much. ☺ I need to watch it again; it's been a while.
I like the way Iain says 'Jerry, the vampire who lives next door'. Sounds like an introduction to a charming children's book 😄
Great review! IMO, this is one of the best vampire movies ever made, and with Near Dark and The Lost Boys it's the best vampire movie of the 1980's.
I had forgotten about Near Dark.

No, he’s too busy making out with his girlfriend to pay attention to the Fright Night tv show.
I can't go to sleep until I've watched the entire video of a new review you blokes post :)
Why does it matter if the neighbour is a vampire?
Just tell the police that he might be a murderer.
@08:35
I wonder if Francise Ford Coppula 'barrowed' the idea that Dracula pursued Mina
because she was the striking image of his late wife, Elizabetha, from "Fright Night".
Evil saying dinner is in the oven is my favorite line lol I still use it

Same in Legacy of Kain, at least SR1.
"Once you're dead, you're pretty much open to fuck everything." Wise words Ian, wise words.
Yes! Thanks for the request, you guys rock!

part 2 was not too bad plus had Julie Carmen was pretty hot as jerrys sister
I thought it was good. Great scene where Peter Vincent declares he's a vampire killer too.
There's a lot of people back in the day that said Roddy McDowall should have had an Oscar or been nominated for that movie I
A lot of crits though so
Jerry dandridge was never evil Just misunderstood and lonely also Dean Cameron in Rockula both great guys as a kid i wanted these 2 to meet in an argument like Rockula saving Jerry at the end of Fright night and teach him how to live :)

I am watching so many of your reviews and i am having a blast :-) Pls do "Tony" , "Collateral", "Dune" , "The Hunted" and "Runaway Train" one day.
Billy's girlfriend in this movie is Marcy from Married With Children
You mean Charley's gf. Unless you mean William Ragsdale, who plays Charley and has probably been called Billy at some time.
Just watched this, what a great review. 2 things come to mind about what you discussed. Firstly, the use of mirrors in the nightclub. Fright Night 2 was really good, if you liked the first one its worth seeing it.
Tom Holland seems like a great director. And he is the best Spiderman to date! And he still looks so young despite this film from the 80ties! Amazing!
This movie really was damned good, gonna have to rewatch :)
I'm not much of a vampire fan, but I loved this.

I always thought that meant the cross burnt into Ed's face because Ed had faith. And the main vampire didn't.

do a review of ghoulies 2 and critters /critters 2 please.
You fellas should review Disturbia - if you like teenage horror films. Fairly recent, well 2007. Only 12 years old.
great poster... but can't say i ever rewatched it. i seem to remember someone getting a pencil stabbed in a hand and the "invited in" detail. I think my friend and I watched The Gate around this time too - which i enjoyed more.
Tom Holland's directorial debut was Psycho 2 in 1983
My favorite vampire flick from the 80s along with the lost boy's
You guys should review 976-EVIL
William Ragsdale Hermans Head. I'm pretty sure he got the gig from Fright Night.
Once you turn undead, your pretty much open to fuck anything. This had me on the floor crying. Fucking love it hahaha
This and night of the living dead are 2 of my earliest horror movie memories.
Amanda Bearse was in Married With Children. Guess yall don't get that over there
Charlie's girlfriend also played Marcy on Married with Children but I don't know if that aired in the UK it was a very popular show in the United States in the 80's and 90s.
It did air in England. Was a favourite of mine.
great review . roddy yes he was Awesome and very classy guy. in this movie they all were great.i love it. thanks guys
Great review, guys! Lotsa lolz
I didn't even know that there was a Fright Night 2 to THIS film. I knew there was a remake and a sequel to that.
As A Kid Terrified Me But I Couldnt Get Enough Of It👀🍻

Wait is Evil Edd a reference to the evil dead cause he is a horror fan and they both sound very similar
I think there's a number of curveballs that are thrown at us...
Evil Ed / Evil Dead and "Peter Vincent" being a play on
Peter Cushing and Vincent Price from Hammer Studios.
Personally...
my favorite part in this review was where they point out Peter Vincent was such a bad actor that he pointed the wooden stake the wrong way (ie, the sharpened end towards himself).
I never got the idea or impression that Peter Vincent was a bad actor.
Actually, I thought that his stage presence was pretty commanding
(albiet, a bit cheesy and exaggerated, but I think that was the point).
So it thru me for a loop that the wooden stake was pointing the wrong way. lol.
@@VredesStall Vincent Price wasn't a Hammer Studios stable actor like Cushing.
He didn't give his victims any chances, though, did he? If you had a serial killer next door, would you ignore it because he told you he'd leave you and your family alone?
Brilliant Review!!
I guess that during the wolf scene it's technically Peter And the Wolf.
Will you do part 2?!
I agree with Gary, the remake was absolute shit! Just stick to the original!
Great Review you guys!
Love and marriage Marcy lmao
I was expecting Al Bundy to come and save the day
Still love that J Geils Band song. Perfect way to end an 80's horror film!
Unless Tom Holland is gay, I doubt he intended that to be the case. Or maybe he was just a really progressive 80s director.. 🤷♂️
All time favorite movie! I never get tried of watching this film. Horror and comedy combined. Great prosthetics and makeup in the film. The music is good. The acting is good. Overall great film. Great review, guys!
Brilliant review!!!
Don't call me evil!
I just love the movie. I must confess that I saw the remake first (and quite liked it) but this is of course ❤️
Amanda Bearse is so pretty in this movie, it is hard to believe that she was 27 during the filming.
My favourite vampire movie... Ever! Great review guys
Fright night is my favorite vampire movie
Fright night was paying tribute to the hammer horror films not taking the pish out of them.
One of the best movies ever made!
Very cool review. One of my favorite horror films.

Gerry' familiar too is so funny hes great in House 2: The second story. Could you review HOUSE plz Guys its a classic.

The legend of hell House...
