The main theme that is prevalent in all of these films is that even in a world where the dead are returning to eat the living, the biggest threat is human nature.
Yeah, agreed. I think for the reasons you give it has something of a John Carpenter's _The Thing_ feel to it. There's nowhere for them to go, and they start going a bit crazy and end up fighting each other as much as they're fighting the zombies. Check this out: nerdist.com/article/day-of-the-dead-romero-syfy-tv-show/
I feel bad for Miguel in a sense - he’s a truly broken man. I agree that Dr “Frankenstein” is a confident egotistical goader and example of the road to hell is made with good intention, so I kinda empathize a bit with Rhodes when he calls him out for killing his soldiers. But it’s Sarah who is the truly realistic and sympathetic one.
These reviews -- especially the ones where you guys are really invested -- make these lonely ass business trips bearable. I think I've watched this episode, alone, at least 10 times, over the years.
In my opinion this is the ultimate zombie film. Top notch special effects and the soundtrack is brilliant. R.I.P Joseph Pilato. Great review as always guy's. We've been spoilt this week.
With all the tension between the military and the civilians/scientists, I love the way Day of the Dead makes me feel that humans can be more dangerous than the zombies.
I know that there are some people who don't think Sara is an interesting character, but holy cow, I don't know what movie those people are watching. She reminds me so much of Jill Valentine (I guess in the reverse sense since Sara came first, but regardless) from Resident Evil 3 on. She is obviously tired, experiencing some serious PTSD, and just trying to hold it together. Her character growth moments throughout the film, such as the moment when she is talking with Terry Alexander's character, John, or the scene when she has to cut off Miguel's arm, the scene where she starts crying, the nightmare sequences. They all show a woman who is trying so hard to acclimate to this world, but is struggling with it. I wish Hollywood still wrote female characters like this.
This is my favorite one I know a lot of people find it hard to watch because of language but I think it creates a realistic atmosphere for that type of situation claustrophobia anxiety hopelessness.
We need to store these reviews underground before the copyright zombies get them. I'm not much of a film buff compared to you guys or a lot of the shelfers but I'd say that overall this is probably the best film of the original three on a technical level, like the zombie makeup, the effects, editing etc. Plus Joe Pilato is amazing.
This one has been my favorite of the dead films since I first saw it in the early 90s. It truly captures the bleak hopelessness that I think is necessary in zombie films.
Yes. Some fans deride the character for being overly whiney. But the actor did a great job portraying the character where the performance implies a good backstory. Before the apocalypse, Miguel was probably a wealthy sophisticated type who led an adventurer playboy lifestyle. An arrogant ladies man. But when the shit really went down, he signed up into service to survive..and then found out what he was truly made of; and he completely deteriorated when confronted with the grim realities of societal collapse.
What a treat, first "Dawn", now this, you nailed this gem well guys! The week I moved down to LA this movie came out, needless to say I saw it opening day & went back repeatedly to savor this dark film again & again!
P S The gunned down scientist, Martinez from Dawn was played by John Amplas, who was the title character in Romero's Martin. Also if you guys haven't seen a forty minute movie called The Legend of Hombre Lobo. A tribute to Paul Naschy.
40:45 But I think torrez also had the opportunity to escape, because he is closest to the escalator exit, he can actually hide and wait for the zombie group to leave ... But...zombies are everywhere...
Diddent care for this when it was first released, nowadays it's my favourite of Romeros Zombie flicks. Still think Diary and Survival of the Dead suck big time though. What a great character Rhodes was.
The gore effects are just...Damn. The characters suffer a lot. I also love the soundtrack, I'm sure if you listened to Gorillaz's song M1A1, you will recognize the opening. Easily one of the best Trilogies ever made.
I'd have to say Dawn of the Dead is the best. It's probably my favorite movie. But anyone that loves Day of the Dead is automatically a friend of mine. 👍
Bub wasn't eating his own flesh off the razor blad as bub was looking in the mirror and saw him cut him self shaving he went to wipe the blood and suck his finger like he probably did in life its another memory.
Love this film! And the zombie-fx is just mindblowing. Trivia: The science-assistant who get shot in the head by Rhodes, is played by John Amplas from MARTIN (1978). Took a while before I recognised him.
Third movie in the trilogy and it’s a good one. This is a very underrated and underappreciated movie over the years, but now I’m glad it’s received the recognition that has duly deserved for a long time good stuff, great review as always thank you
*”..a very underrated and underappreciated movie over the years..”* I just don’t know about that. Day of the Dead is very much a classic of the zombie horror sub-genre. And it’s been heavily reviewed. If you mean that it hasn’t garnered the horror movie acclaim that Psycho or Alien have, then okay.
Bub is the only zombie I would ever feel sorry for in a zombie movie. His expression when he sees the dead doctor just makes you feel sorry for him. It's an okay movie I think for the series. I agree with your thoughts for this movie and it's series up this point. Wonder what is up next for your reviews. Return of the Living Dead, or something else? Either way, I have a feeling I might enjoy it! :)
I remember as a kid the first time I saw this on TV. Intro sequence starts up, I'm hooked, but then that fucked-face zombie pops up with the title and I'm like "NOPE. NOT READY FOR THIS SHIT." Now it's one of my favorite horror movies ever and I watch it every Halloween (or if I get sick in the summer, not sure why lol)
Remember finding this on VHS at a car boot sale when I was about eight loved every minute of it. I’m now pushing 41 and still watch it till this day classic
Like the reviewer in the video, I too had to see it multiple times to really appreciate this third entry into Romero’s Living Dead trilogy. This is a very good zombie horror film. I can tell the entire cast and crew worked very hard making it.
Stellar review guys. The practical fx in this movie still hold up extremely well nearly 40 years later, that's testament to how good they really are. It's bleak, as it should be, it's the end of Humanity after all. The direction is brilliant throughout, emphasising the characters and events in detail, focusing on what's important for the viewer to take in. The characters are just great, each having their own traits that make them individuals, and the conflicts within the closed group setting brings out the best (or worst) of each individual. It may not be the movie we wanted, but it's the movie we needed. Rest in peace George. The Horror Genre ows you a great debt that can never be repaid.
this is my view of the ending. Sarah's dreams play a big part through the whole film. When she is on the beach at the end she is reliving what happened, the hands coming out of the helicopter are the dream part, hence they really escaped and ended up on the island at the end.
This was the first Romero film I ever saw when I was a kid - it was on around dawn one Saturday morning when I woke up unusually early. Even today, I like it as much if not more than Dawn, maybe bc it was the first I ever saw.
This was the only one of these Romero films I'd seen up until maybe2004. I rented this from the back catalogue at whatever company had currently tried to conglomerate and revitalize the movie rental industry competitors of blockbuster as both died. But the cover grabbed me and wow, what a film, must have watched it five times before I returned it. Caught the other ones eventually, but they yeah, they still have hope. great movie.
Day Of The Dead was my first George A. Romero flick I ever watched than Monkey Shines and as I got older I watched the remake of Night Of Living Dead which lead me to watching the original Dawn of The Dead and Night Of The Living Dead
The most underratd of the series. And when Bub sees Logan's dead body reminded me of the Monster (Boris Karloff) finding Ygor's (Bela Lugosi) dead body in Son of Frankenstein.
At the time I & many others loved watching "Miami Vice" on television every Friday evening so to me this was epic seeing a Miami Florida setting in "Day", perfect timing for 1986 then & strangely disturbing as if to mock the popularity of the pop TV show & setting!
There are a few things about the practical effects in this movie (and others) that bother me, looking back. While most of the gore here was over the top and really well executed, I hate when bodies are getting ripped apart and you see the skin stretching like playdough. I know it's rubber prosthetics, but it takes me right out of it when I see that. The skin would pull apart much sooner than the rubber we see in these effects. Also, when the actor isn't angled correctly on the floor and it's so obvious that the body being dismembered isn't his own. That was not a problem as much in this film except right at that last shot where Sarge or whatever his name is got ripped apart. The other body dismemberments were great, but that one was so fake looking, coupled with elastic skin. haha
That’s what sucks about watching older films with high-definition viewing quality: special effects become much more scrutable, even if you realized that before all that.
41:08 Actually the high pitched voice would be pretty realistic - if you stretch out the vocal cords, the voice will pitch up. So if anyone would try to rip your head off, you will sound like this (it is the same effect if you tune a string instrument). BTW - OUTSTANDING WORK GUYS!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR ENTERTAINING AND INSIGHTFUL VIDEOS!!!
1:30 Dear Off The Shelves channel viewers! Knightriders! I've just seen this movie 2 weeks ago. I think it was bit too long, however I was positively surprised by it. Again Romero gave us an interesting story, and a bunch of very likeable characters. I can see why it was not a success, and why it is so overlookd in his filmography. Still if you're a fan of Romero, and haven't seen it yet, give it a try, it is a good movie overall. And I am sure you have not seen a movie like this before :)
55:51 I mean in all fairness, that's what happens if you loose money on things. It's not your money. you're wasting and it's only wow it's Gorge Ramero in hindsight. Then if you look at his body of work they are alot more misses than hits really
I love your Dawn Of The Dead Shirt, it reminds me of a piece concept artwork for Resident Evil 2 (1998). I also love the artwork of, Zombie Stephen on your shirt. I find it to be good, and scary. I like John, Bill, Sarah, and Bub. Gosh I just hated Captain Rhodes, and his cronies. I so very glad that assclowns, got what they deserved. Dr. Logan Frankenstein wasn't that bad but, he wasn't my favorite non villainous character of the movie.
I strangely love this film above Dawn and Night of the Living Dead which are still great films but Day of the Dead is my all time favorite zombie film.
Anybody ever seen a low budget zombie flick called "Colin" worth a watching , the movie shows you life through the eyes of a zombie brings a whole new aspect to the life of zombies a good dynamic defos one to watch
The lowest grossing film in George A. Romero's "Dead" trilogy. Nonetheless, it's gained a cult following over the last three decades. The alarm sound heard is the same one from The Thing (1982). On the special edition DVD, director George A. Romero claims this is his favourite film out of the original "dead trilogy". Most of the zombie extras in this film were Pittsburgh residents who volunteered to help in the film. Real pig intestines were used during the gore scenes. During Miguel's sedation, Lori Cardille told Anthony Dileo Jr. to actually slap her to make it look more authentic. During the opening dream sequence when zombie arms attack Sarah through the wall, one of them was Lori Cardille's husband. In Night of the Living Dead (1968) no one survived from the house. In Dawn of the Dead (1978), Peter and Francine survive. In this film, Sarah, John and McDermott survive Right after Logan tells the zombie that it needs to sit in the dark and think about what it did, and punishes it by turning off the light, a little bit of the "The Gonk" music from Dawn of the Dead (1978) can be heard in the transition of scenes. Pat Logan, who played Uncle Rege in Night of the Living Dead (1990) appears as a Bald Mustachioed Zombie shot by Steel in the mines. The book Dr. Logan gives to Bub is Stephen King's "Salem's Lot." George A. Romero and King have been friends for many years.
I was born Nov'5 1985 the movie takes place in 85 and the last sence of the movie is her with the calender and the date she marks down is Nov'4 1985 one day before my birthday!
I LOVE these two and agree whole heartedly w/most all of their reviews! SO glad I stumbled upon this site. Same feeling as having an initial letdown when I saw "Day"., but alot of that has to do w/being a young kid at the time. This film got better and better the more times I watched it. Finally as an adult, it went from grinding through all of the dialogue etc. to get to a banger of an ending......to a masterpiece that keeps me invested the entire way through. The Romero trilogy IS the zombie genre to me, these two awesome reviewers and so many more. The more I watch and appreciate these 3 films and the world that George built, the more puzzling and seemingly impossible it seems just how much air this genius got in jumping his zombified shark! WTF?!
I loved it immediately the first time I saw it. I felt it was a brilliant follow up to Dawn. I never doubted it. I do like the other two more. But all in all a perfect zombie trilogy. Can't think of another film wise, the first three Resident Evil games maybe. But no films.
Day Of The Dead is the most well made film in Romero's Dead trilogy, with great cinematography, brilliant acting, superb Zombies and stellar visual effects. Rounding off the appocalypse to a nice coclusion, DOTD stands the test of time and earns it's place as the finale to the perfect Zombie trilogy. Another fine review again guys, good stuff.
Night, Dawn & Day of the Dead are my top 3 favorite dead films! George out did himself with these first three films! Day of the Dead is one of Tom Savini's BEST GORE EFFECTS EVER! The cast were great! Lori Cardille as Sarah was a great female supporting main character! Richard Liberty as Logan a.k.a Frankenstein was brilliant! Sherman Howard as the zombie Bub was hilarious and the BEST zombie! Two of the funny soldiers were great in their roles! And of course, motherfuckin Joseph Pilato as Rhodes was OUTSTANDINGLY MAGNIFICENT! This is a fun movie! I just LOVE IT! It's not AS GOOD as Dawn of the Dead, but Day of the Dead does deserve the praise too! Once again, Thank you George A. Romero!
I have to say...I've read the un-filmed script a coupla times now and - to be honest - I'm so glad that Day of the Dead became the version that they ended up having to film instead. It seems that George incorporated some of the original Day script into Land. And Land of the Dead isn't very good at all. It's kinda OK, but it's not GOOD. Day of the Dead, as it ended up, is freaking awesome. I'm so glad it ended up this far more intimate, low key and claustrophobic film, rather than the bombastic and bloated film that it might have been, had George been able to make it, with the right budget.
Thank you for reviewing my favorite zombie film. While I liked dawn of the dead, I just adore day of the dead. It was the first zombie movie I ever saw at 7 yrs old and I fell in love with the genre ever since.
Thank you so much for these reviews. It's almost a cathartic journey. We're all pilgrims marching against ever mounting decay. (Off The Shelf Reviews > Chris Stuckmann)
The main theme that is prevalent in all of these films is that even in a world where the dead are returning to eat the living, the biggest threat is human nature.
Very underrated movie. The more I watch it the more I enjoy it.
The most claustrophobic of the 3 films, and the most depressing as well. I guess that's why it's my favorite. I grew up watching Day on Cinemax.
Yeah, agreed. I think for the reasons you give it has something of a John Carpenter's _The Thing_ feel to it. I fear I'd end up like Miguel if an actual zombie apocalypse ever happened, I'm overweight so I'd probably be one of the first to go.
Very true.
These reviews -- especially the ones where you guys are really invested -- make these lonely ass business trips bearable.

Perhaps. But I'd rather get shot, stabbed or bludgeoned to death over eaten alive.
Is music 🎵 2 this movie is still creepy LoL church 😎😎😁🌹🌹🥵🥵😍🔥🌺😘😋❤️❤️😎☮️🙏☮️

Lol why was an alligator just chillin with the zombies
Alligator was dead you didn't see pieces of the top mouth was bitten off.
zom-gator.
They find peace on a beach on my birthday lol. I always loved that.
Happy birthday, kinda
It was a couple days after mine. lol
"......Maybe [god] just got tired of people trying to work his shit out."
Class!!!
RiP George...... And thank you.
I have to say that you two are the best review show going. The camaraderie and insight is completely engaging.
Day of the Dead is my all time favourite zombie film😊, another great review guys!!
This one has been my favorite of the dead films since I first saw it in the early 90s. It truly captures the bleak hopelessness that I think is necessary in zombie films.
Miguel was may favorite character. He had the most emotional depth and was portrayed excellently, by the actor.
Mann fuck Romeo why not do Dan O'Bannon film like ROTLD series.
I love how you guys give us tidbits of information. I thought I knew everything about Romero movies, but you continue to educate me👍
It’s been a good week with all these reviews!
"Hello! Is anyone there!...Helllloooo!"
Day of the Dead Looks great on Blu-Ray perfect transfer.
P S The gunned down scientist, Martinez from Dawn was played by John Amplas, who was the title character in Romero's Martin. Also if you guys haven't seen a forty minute movie called The Legend of Hombre Lobo. A tribute to Paul Naschy.
*This film and especially the soundtrack was a MAJOR influence in making the "Dying Light" video game*
40:45
But I think torrez also had the opportunity to escape, because he is closest to the escalator exit, he can actually hide and wait for the zombie group to leave ...
But...zombies are everywhere...
Great review fellas, much love from the States
The best of all the deads!
Diddent care for this when it was first released, nowadays it's my favourite of Romeros Zombie flicks. Still think Diary and Survival of the Dead suck big time though. What a great character Rhodes was.
Agreed. It disappointed me on first view, but gets better and better! :)
The guy who's plays Rhodes is a total hippy in real life!
I actually kind of like the european edit of Dawn, seems argento tried to make it straight horror like night or day.
The gore effects are just...Damn. The characters suffer a lot. I also love the soundtrack, I'm sure if you listened to Gorillaz's song M1A1, you will recognize the opening. Easily one of the best Trilogies ever made.
The third and BEST of the series - this film is incredible.
Ikr and it is one of my favorites as well! 😁
Objectively speaking I wouldn't say it's the best one but it's very good.
Fancy seeing you here my friend, I love this one as well & savored it opening day at the theater, a must see on the big screen!
My favourite too and my favourite zombie movie.
You guys are awesome!!!!!!
Love this film! And the zombie-fx is just mindblowing. Trivia: The science-assistant who get shot in the head by Rhodes, is played by John Amplas from MARTIN (1978). Took a while before I recognised him.
The character’s name was Fisher
I think this is a great sequel, but damn, Romero's original idea always sounded much better and like you said, it would have been zombie epic.
Third movie in the trilogy and it’s a good one. This is a very underrated and underappreciated movie over the years, but now I’m glad it’s received the recognition that has duly deserved for a long time good stuff, great review as always thank you

Because when ur sick thats the closest to being a zombie as it gets haha! And awesome how long ago was this in the 80s?
THANK YOU for having this amazing channel. Your reviews.. are something else.
Any chance we'll see a review of Inglourious Basterds?
I can still remember that alligator from the beginning of the movie, he clearly had its mouth taped shut
Iv seen this film over a 100 times the is nothing I don't know about it ....great review guys 😊
Remember finding this on VHS at a car boot sale when I was about eight loved every minute of it. I’m now pushing 41 and still watch it till this day classic
Day Of The Dead (1985) is a magnificent Zombie Film !!!!
It's definitely my favorite of Romero's 'Dead' series !!
Like the reviewer in the video, I too had to see it multiple times to really appreciate this third entry into Romero’s Living Dead trilogy.
This is a very good zombie horror film. I can tell the entire cast and crew worked very hard making it.
Thanks for this! I have always felt a bit like a black sheep amongst horror fans, because Day is my favorite zombie film.
Stellar review guys.
The practical fx in this movie still hold up extremely well nearly 40 years later, that's testament to how good they really are.

2:30am here on the east coast in the states and I was just ready to tuck in.
I'll just have to sleep in tomorrow ;)
WOOOOOOOO!!! ANOTHER NIGHT SAVED!!!
this is my view of the ending. Sarah's dreams play a big part through the whole film. When she is on the beach at the end she is reliving what happened, the hands coming out of the helicopter are the dream part, hence they really escaped and ended up on the island at the end.

This was the only one of these Romero films I'd seen up until maybe2004. There are a few things about the practical effects in this movie (and others) that bother me, looking back. That’s what sucks about watching older films with high-definition viewing quality: special effects become much more scrutable, even if you realized that before all that.
My favorites in this order: Night/Day/Dawn.
Give it up to Rickles man. Laughter was the dude’s last coping mechanism and he clung to it for as long he could, until it hurt too much.
41:08 Actually the high pitched voice would be pretty realistic - if you stretch out the vocal cords, the voice will pitch up.
Dr. Logan says it all when he replies: "They ARE us!"
How about Thinner? It's almost a hidden gem of King adaptations since everyone seems to have forgotten it since 96.
lmao thinner was the shit. i introduced it to my mom and watched it with my gf at the time and they both enjoyed it.
Very true.
Love this upload routine!
55:51 I mean in all fairness, that's what happens if you loose money on things.
It's not your money. you're wasting and it's only wow it's Gorge Ramero in hindsight.
Then if you look at his body of work they are alot more misses than hits really

During the opening dream sequence when zombie arms attack Sarah through the wall, one of them was Lori Cardille's husband.
In Night of the Living Dead (1968) no one survived from the house. In Dawn of the Dead (1978), Peter and Francine survive. In this film, Sarah, John and McDermott survive
Right after Logan tells the zombie that it needs to sit in the dark and think about what it did, and punishes it by turning off the light, a little bit of the "The Gonk" music from Dawn of the Dead (1978) can be heard in the transition of scenes.
"I hate miguel. I hated steven in dawn. I hate miguel worse."
Exactly!
I was born Nov'5 1985 the movie takes place in 85 and the last sence of the movie is her with the calender and the date she marks down is Nov'4 1985 one day before my birthday!
Christmas at Halloween....
Day of the Dead has always been my favorite of his trilogy
Believe it or not, this film was the first zombie film I ever watched, so, it has meaning for me in that way.
Joe was all so in Dawn of the dead but his scene was cut from the theatrical version of the film he plays a cop 😊
Best channel on RUclips
OMG I have the same Kenny plushie !!! Gotta love being a 90s child ✨
Soundtrack and actors are great my best horror ever
One of my favourite films
I saw this at the cinema in the UK on it's original release.
Someone should do a graphic novel from George's original Day of the Dead script.
Nah, it wouldn't be that good. The script itself is really mediocre.
Romero!
I saw it in Boston when it came out and some of the audience left mid-movie, but I really got into it.
Fucking awesome, this is THE zombie apocalypse movie
Fantastic review again guys agree 100% hope Land of the Dead is next and eventually you do Return of the Living Dead and Zombi2 as well😉
Can you do the review of Return Of The Living Dead 1985 Iain & Gary Please?
I almost watched your Land of the Dead review before watching this! The hell is wrong with me? Lol
What? 😱 Round 2 Baby!
Agreed, and if we thought big daddy was bad, that zombie army in the original script would have been a thousand times worse.
I third that. Less can be more.
Wish I could just talk with you guys in a pod and just talk about movies. lol you guys are awesome man, keep it up bruvs.
Thank you for reviewing my favorite zombie film. While I liked dawn of the dead, I just adore day of the dead. It was the first zombie movie I ever saw at 7 yrs old and I fell in love with the genre ever since.
Blink and you'll miss Joe Pilato as Jack Rabbit Slim's Dean Martin impersonator in Pulp Fiction!
Greg Nicotero worked on the special effects too, not just Savini alone.
P.S. Great movie.
Thank you so much for these reviews. It's almost a cathartic journey. We're all pilgrims marching against ever mounting decay.
