@Christopher McMillan The movie didn't do well because people were still so hung up on the feel and experience of Dawn of the Dead and its massive success - they wanted more of the same from Day of the Dead, but it's a different movie entirely, and far more oppressive in tone. The movie makes you think and audiences weren't expecting such a cerebral zombie after Dawn of the Dead. Add on top of that the fact that the marketing for the film was just awful... the people running promotion didn't know how to sell this movie to audiences or critics. They also had their budget cut to a third of what they requested for the film, and the movie was a limited release, as well as having a mature rating. It was a total mess. Thankfully they recovered their losses when the movie came to VHS and the movie found a much larger audience there.

This movie has aged so well and John Harrison's score is brilliant. It really takes me back to my late adolescence I'm the late 1980s and early 1990s. I saw a clip of this on some news presentation about gore in movies and it scared the hell out of me. Zombies always bugged me in a way nothing else in horror could. I couldn't even look at the box when I went to the video store, but eventually I worked up the courage (with some help from my friends) to rent it. I still own a VHS copy.

I remember leaving the theater sort of in a daze.

My all time favorite zombie flick.
Everything about it is satisfying, from the slightly over the top/comic book characters/portrayals to the editing, direction, tone and score (the score in particular works on the level that it sounds 'dream like' and odd, energetic and haunting all at the same time) and the effects, of course...best ever depicted in a walking dead feature.
Simply brilliant, from the entertainment level of a horror film to the commentary on issues of the day.

    turns 35 today!
    Still one of Romero’s best
He was the master of zombie movies blending commentary of the human condition with frights and gore
Bub is a cool zombie, the score is pretty sweet, there’s some genuine emotional moments, and it emulates the hopelessness of the apocalypse ticking down
A poetic and thought provoking conclusion to this trilogy

Some of this they talk themselves down, I consider Day to be the second best film after Dawn. There is no way it is not a masterpiece, and also Joe Pilato plays Rhodes so well, I never once thought it was unrealistic. Also the score is a work of art. I hate to think these people don't really think that there's people out there who consider it the highest form of art. I had no idea some Romero fans of the day werent impressed, I saw this in the 90s, 2 days after Dawn, and was absolutely blown away. Also I think Savini would make a great Rhodes, and also that the film it is is probably better than the film that was planned, as Romero even said. The end confused me but I would never boo :-) Great docu thanks very much. Amazing!

Ditto, i watched this as soon as i was old enough to ride my bike to the video store in the mid-90's. Because up until then one of the stories my mom would always tell me, was the original Night of the Living Dead! So i was ecstatic to find out that there were sequels! And Day has been my favorite ever since.
And i always took the ending to mean that most of the movie was her reliving things that actually happened in her dreams, with more than a bit of nightmare logic thrown in.
