Love you finally are seeing, discussing this CLASSIC. Still the gold standard for horror comedy. The horror holds up, and the hopeless situation really holds up well. The comedy is ALSO laugh out loud funny and that is the HARDEST balance to find. Still rank this ahead of Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, and the other FEW very good horror comedy's. This for US will forever be the gold standard.
Whenever I hear that song , I see the skull/skeleton coming out of that grave with the visible control rods, LOL, then my mind goes immediately to "Trash" , dancing on that Crypt. And I smile.
There are so many early clues to Frank and Freddy's doom, I still kick myself for not seeing them; the Tar Man ignores them while they're unconscious, and when released the Freezer Cadaver blows right past them to attack Bert (the only nonzombified "brains" in the room). I didn't catch on until the most obvious moment, when they're examined by the paramedics--but that scene would come back to haunt me years later, when I got very sick and my blood pressure and pulse dropped so low that nurses couldn't get a reading until I was lifted up onto my feet (at which point I went completely--but thankfully only temporarily--blind). "The pain of being dead!" There are moments when horror movies blow your mind conceptually, and for me this is THE moment--when the idea is put into one's head that "rest in peace" is a lie, that there is something so fundamentally _broken_ about existence that life exists only to end in eternal torment. _F&$# you, movie, you were supposed to be fun!_ ...Aw, I can't stay mad at you.
Makes me wonder just where the hell Tar Man wandered off to/why he didn't bother making his prescence known when Frank and Freddy woke up lol. Like they couldn't smell him or turn their heads and just see him standing in a corner?
Dan O'Bannon also did the coolest bit of 'Heavy Metal'. (B-17!) WWII Airpower, Zombies & Foo Fighters! How can you go wrong!?! & I love the shot in the hokey Cityscape... Right after the nuke goes off & before the shockwave hits, a light flips on in one of the widows! (Like someone's woken up going 'What the HECK was that???'.)
There's a lot of ROTLD references in Resident Evil. One of the zombie types in Code Veronica looks similar to a zombie from ROTLD 3, and the bit during the opening of RE3 where the police and SWAT fight off the zombies is reminiscent of the police blockade scene in this movie.
I watched this YEARS ago because of a small clip in another OTSR, thank yall for all the amazing films you've shown us 😁 Edit: oooooooh I have the 24 month off the shelf badge!!!! Finally!!! 😁

Alright, lads! I've been following your channel for what seems like forever. I fell ill four years ago and I credit you two - along with my medical team and family - for saving my life. If you take anything away from this, please know that you matter and that you are making a difference. Thank you for all that you do.
I pressed the "like" button immediately when I opened this page. I know this will be a great time! Gary and Iain are always enjoyable, and with enjoyable movies...
Absolute master class in horror-comedy, this. Take the situation serious, and let the humor arise naturally from the absurdity of it all. Classic lines and scenes, genuinely chilling, bleak tone throughout, and enough over-the-top cheese to make it fun. One of my top 20 favorite movies of all time (and that's a lot of stiff competition)
What's funny is Ernie's my favorite character in this whole film because he's the most sympathetic towards others. He's willing to help a friend even though he knows he's not getting a lot out of it, he lets everyone into his mortuary even though he could have locked them out, and at the end when they're locked in the attic he saves his last bullet for the girl instead of using it on himself (another part of the movie that alludes to him being a Nazi-they almost end up going out like Adolf and Eva). For an ex-Nazi the guy was pretty OK lol.
One question I always wondered is where did the autopsy body go in the first scene in the mortuary? The one where Ernie was working the rigormortus out?
Some more facts to the movie 1. The Cannon scenes were no CGI but Miniatures 2. Glu Gulager was fired the moment he finished his last scene - The director Dan O'Bannon and Glu had many disagreements and fights during the shooting 3. Jewel Shepard playing the Casey character was a stripper when she met Dan O'Bannon at a strip joint. She was first cast to play the Trash character (then called Legs) and was supposed to perform the Graveyard Dance but she refused to get naked - so Linea Quigley got the role and the rest is history. 4. Linea Quigley got the role of Trash because the first replacement actress of Jewel Shepard (who refused to get naked) got pregnant and too big to perform the dance. It's hard to believe that Linea after all was third choice for the role. 5. When Ernie slapped Spider in the face left and right, the second slap was real and the actor unprepared, that's why it looks so authentic. 6. The special effects designer who created the Tarman Zombie Bill Munns was fired during the production and replaced by Tony Gardner who did the Half-Corpse puppet. 7. The actor who played Tarman was a puppeteer of the Muppets 8. The actor who played "Spider" was homeless at the time when he got the role. 9. James Karen is also the guy who removed the headstones but left the bodies in Poltergeist 10. The scene in which Tina fell trough the stairs was real. Dan O'Bannon removed the board and the actress Beverly Randolph didn't knew about it. She got hurt very badly.
Discussion of the nuke shot FX (deleted scene from the documentary _Sense of Scale)_ : ruclips.net/video/5ko4VAXPWqY/видео.html I think perhaps Iain is talking about the shot of the shell being loaded, which he describes as "CGI-like" but which seems to be stop-motion? Maybe?
@@ScreamingScallop Ian knows his stuff but I think he just used the wrong term in this case. I'm pretty sure he meant "special effect". CGI wasn't really a thing in 1985 anyway. I think the loading of the gun was made with stop-motion technique using miniatures.
Just found your channel about a week ago, been binging your stuff! You guys really have a passion for this, and it makes it even more enjoyable to watch. I saw that you have a Twitch channel as well, gave that a follow and look forward to watching tomorrow!
The thing about that title card at the very beginning of the film; it makes it a point to say that none of the names of people or businesses have been changed. Then it cuts to the very first shot of the film, which is of the sign for the business that Bert and Freddy work for. U-Needa Medical Supply. It's just so damn silly!
I saw this at my local theatre 3 times. The gore (?) had members of the crowd vomiting and escaping, but I was laughing so hard! I couldn't believe they made Trioxin Man! This was also my first film I met relatives that wouldn't discuss it, I thought they were nuts! Turns out there's a lot of people like that, who knew?
So much fun and yet its a bit dark. Also fu Brian Peck. I remember in the sequel documentary there is a photo of him as the Thriller zombie with one of the child actors....eh.
This is one of the best zombie movies to date! YOU HAVE TO LOVE THIS FILM! Honestly, I'm not crazy for zombie films, aside from the George Romero films, I'm not too crazy for others. But this baby right here! Is a joy to watch! Personally THIS is my favorite comedy zombie film! No offence to Shawn of the Dead (great comedy zombie film too!). But Return of the living dead is the true icing on the cake for me! Glad you guys reviewed this one! THANK YOU!
I just realized that paramedic response scene may have been done in homage in Death Becomes Her... the blanket, the vitals, the make up look... feels very close that seeing it here reminded me instantly of DBH (which is one of my favs). I always thought this was the one where the guy's neck is so eaten up that you just see his exposed spine. That was seared into my brain regarding zombies. Which zombie film is that? The third one? I definitely should watch the series, in order.
Don't know about that, but his real name is Michael Newsome. Met him about 10 years after the movie was made as his cousin was my roommate. Great guy and we talked at the dinner table about the making of the movie as it's always been a huge favorite of mine (I'm positive I annoyed the heck out of him with all of my questions). He said and I'm going to say "allegedly" here because it's hearsay from him, but said he and Ms. Quigley (Trash) had "relations" during the making of the film.
One thing people never seem to reference is that when the 1st Zombie targets Burt. On the surface, it's just a throw-away gag cuz he's the furthest away & still gets attacked! But it's a tip-off that Frank & Freddie are dead! Thus the Zombie ignored them! & in support of Ernst being a Nazi... if you listen when he's wearing his Walkman, he's listening to German Marching Songs!

i was thinking, the reason the fridge zombie goes right for bert is because the other two are dead after breathing in the gas so they're kind of invisible to attacking zombies
Great review guys. I love this movie, I saw it when I was 14 maybe a little to young but it stuck with me as one of my favorite movies of all time for all this year's. Lol I really did think it was real for about a year until I saw a documentary on special effects.
FYI the song ernie was listening to while he was working on the body when he's first introduced was panzer rollen im afrika vor - the official song of the afrika korps. he clearly was intended to be and escaped ernst kaltenbrunner, but I still don't get why they put that in there at all. the zombies had nothing to do with german experiments or death camp victims coming back and recognizing him, forcing any kind of self reflection for his actions or whatever, so its basically a plot point that had no real purpose despite the amount of effort that went into including it
"Rabid weasels!" 3 things in this movie are absolutely stunning: the music, James Karen and (of course) Trash dancing. And for anyone ever thinking of shaving their pubes, do not. I had it forced on me years ago in preparation for surgery that ended up not happening (long story). The "growing back" period is a nightmare of ITCH. And I mean uncontrollable itch. For a week or two afterwards I walked around carrying a vinyl LP record in a plastic bag so I could hold it in front of me politely and have a good scratch. Sadly my denims ended up with a hugely worn patch in that general area from all the scratching, that looked so ridiculous I had to bin them. Never again.
Good choice. I always wondered if the guys in the cellar would have survived? They're under cover and the nuke artillery shell would have had a limited yield? The military nip the fresh undead outbreak in the bud and force them to sign non-disclosure agreements, writing the nuke off as a terrorist attack/nuclear accident (anyone else notice that the blast from the nuke destroys the houses in the foreground but leaves the skyscrapers in the background unharmed?). 2 is okay, it's not great but I like the ending, 3 is much better, Melinda Clarke was (and still IS!) incredible.
This movie is so 80s and I love it. The theme gives me chills every time I hear it (which is more than the all of one viewing I've had of the whole film) Also, I would say this movie does have a message: The U.S. military is not your friend
An entertaining zombie film to be sure, but jeez is it bleak. I remember when I saw it and was like "these zombies are cheaters. These zombies are unfair." even though this certainly got me to see where the idea of the really indestructible zombies came from that never stop wanting to kill you even when they are a wagging stump of gore.
This movie is so you guys. Very happy you two reviewed it. I'm a big fan, been watching this channel for years.

I loved this zombie and comedy horror zombies. This is one my favorite zombies movies. I'm glad this review came because I'm a fan of you guys.
Hey Gary and Iane! 👋🏾😄
The theme gives me chills every time I hear it (which is more than the all of one viewing I've had of the whole film)
Also, I would say this movie does have a message: The U.S. military is not your friend
This was my first zombie movie. I think I was 10 or 11. When I saw it, not when it came out. I was maybe 5 when it came out.
It's possible the guys in the basement did survive?
@@MrLorenzovanmatterho its a chance they couldve but i dont know
