    I was 10 years old when this movie came out and was lucky enough to get to see it in theatres. Now I get to watch it with my sons and it never gets old.

    The scene with the tattoo is one of my favourite little moments in movies. When I first saw it I was like "Whoa, that's clever!".
    A quick reminder that real monsters exist in a silly (in the good way) horror movie for kids for those in the know - awesome! And I can imagine that many kids who didn't know then asked someone what it meant. Hence providing fodder for discussion.
    And all that without going into any details, showing a flashback and whatnot. Brilliant little moment.

    I was obsessed with this movie when I was about 5 or 6 years old. This is the movie that made me a life long horror fan. I was able to rent this movie when it first came out on VHS. My father used to copy every tape that we rented owned a copy of this.

  • @dougquaid570
    @dougquaid570 6 лет назад +6

    Rented this on tape, a few times, back in the day.
    Frankenstein's monster, in this, always reminded me of "Bub" from Day of the Dead.
    Gill-man looks a lot like the predator.

    • @johnnygallagher5718
      @johnnygallagher5718 3 года назад +1

      The Gill man was designed by Stan Winston the behind Predator, Pumpkinhead, Aliens (1986), The Relic, Jurassic Park, etc. Gill man is also played by Tom Woodruff Jr who later was in Pumpkinhead, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, AVP (2004), AVP Requiem, and was also part in It (2017) and Godzilla KOTM.

    remember 'how you kill a vampire' and 'how you kill a werewolf' is 'whatever it says in the script' I think John Landis said that.

    I saw The Monster Squad on VHS way back in 1987 when i was 9 years old and was a huge fan of the classic Universal monster movies.
    This film was a dream come true for me as i could easily imagine myself at that age being one of the kids battling the monsters in this gem of a movie.
    This review takes me right back to my childhood when i still imagined monsters were real, sleeping in the dark was scary, and growing up in the 80's was the greatest thing ever.
    Thanks for the excellent review guys.

    Oh my God! Iain, Gary! My grandmother would sit on the roof of her cousin's house and watch movies from the local drive in!
    She and her cousin's would grab snack and drinks from downstairs, climb up on the roof, and have a grand ole Time watching movies until they fell asleep.
    Luckily they never fell off but I think it annoyed the adults cause they had to keep going up their to pick them up and put them to bed.

    Pretty sure the implication is the amulet protects the person holding it. The two times Dracula gets his hands on one of the kids, they have the amulet in hand.

    Saw a interview with Andre Gower where is said that when the script called for him to say "kick him in the nards" he actually went to the director and asked why he couldn't just "kick him the balls" or "kick him in the nuts" because kids wouldn't use the word nards. The director just told him to do it as written.

    I was there first time - we rented this film multiple times from our *ahem* video shop. Eventually we just bought the VHS. I love the film so much. Yeah, it's not perfect but who cares. I'd love a sequel with some of the same cast. This was another fun video, boys.

    Great movie... and the fact that I was lucky enough to have seen it in theatres ALMOST makes up for the sorry fact that I am old enough to have done so(!)
    RIP Mary Ellen Trainor (Mom) and Brent Chalem (Horace).

  • @mrg3241
    @mrg3241 7 лет назад +1

    Wow. Great choice you guys!
    I remember I must've been 9 or 10 years old. My mom was going to take me to the theater to see Masters of the Universe. But when we got there, I saw the poster for this movie and begged my mom to see Monster Squad instead. I guess it wasn't restricted, because I was one of the fortunate few who saw this movie at the theater. So Iain, to give you an idea, 9 or 10 is fine if you want to show this to your son.

    I think also the fact is Frankenstein's monster wouldn't be excepted by humans they would hurt or study him maybe it's for the Best he went into the limbo vortex because only the children saw him for the gentle soul he is and not the monster that adults made him to be

    Last night it was my first time watch of The Monster Squad.
    It's one of those movies that I wish I've seen as a kid. I am sure I would love it!
    As an adult (even though I was entertained) I found my self bit underwhelemd with it's thin plot and mentioned plot holes ;)
    Also I am not a big fan of Dracula casting, this man felt very dull to me.
    But I have to say I was surpirsed how many adult things have been sneakd into it though :)
    Cheers guys!

    I loved this film when I was a kid, my sister and I would constantly talk our mum in to renting it from the video shop countless times. As an adult I do see it’s charm but despite some serious nostalgia I probably won’t be watching it again any time soon. Definitely a cult film, but for whatever reason I just don’t fancy it nowadays.

    Age ten to see the movie? Not a bad age, and I agree for the most part, but I saw this at age 7 and LOVED it! It never disturbed me or harmed my young self when I first watched it, but it all depends on the type of kid who's watching this and how their mental stability is. Great fun movie with easily one of the best depictions of Wolfman, Frankenstein and Dracula. Excellent special FX!

    Imo 12 is rather old, don't underestimate how much they learn from other kids at school. When I was 12 I was already playing GTA 3/Vice city all the time. It's just important to learn from the start to keep the violence and curse words in the game/movie and that they are bad in reality.

    Great movie but hard to qualify, too violent and full of deaths for kids (not to mention the sexual aspects of it, voyeurism/blackmail on the nubile teenage neighbour girl+sexy schoolgirl vamp brides), too juvenile for adults, you can see why it wasn't a box office success, it would have been impossible to market. Surprised you didn't mention Tom Noonan's epic performance in Manhunter and Mary Trainor as the mother, she's been in everything over the years. If you look closely you can see the staked body of the 3rd bride being sucked towards the portal at around 114 min so presumably the bowman kills her off-screen whilst the camera is focusing on other stuff (the whole film is available on RUclips at Retromovies. .

    • @jonnybaze
      @jonnybaze 7 лет назад +3

      why isnt it for kids. movie violence is movie violence. its all fake. bad words r just words. sexual aspect either go unnoticed or the child watching the movie already knows. give kids more credit. i watched this after i watched childs play, pet cemetery, the omen and many more. i had to be under 8 at the time. the movie that most freaked me out was willy wonka, the scene in the tunnel and thats for kids and not a horror movie. too juvenile for adults?? y? its about kids, the dialogue fits kids of that time. if u r an adult u were a kid and there for any male can relate.

    Idk. I've been told this is a classic by red letter media and everyone else. But after watching your review, I'm shocked by the amount of language in this film for children. Gore, peeping on girls, and topics of virginity and sex? A little too far (for me) won't be watching this or showing it to my kids

      I watched this repeatedly when I was about 5 or 6. I was obsessed with this film and this is what got me into horror movies. My parents taught me not to swear and that I should not act like the characters I see in films. Good parenting goes a long way and I don't believe in restricting kids from seeing things with violence, sex, or language.

      Griffin Tremaine Dude, I watched the 1990 live action version of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Let me tell you, the language in that film is surprising. So is the animated film Antz.
      My parents didn't give a damn and both my sister and I had clean mouths until we reached our late teens. By then my dad didn't care about us cursing.
