Its got a reputation because it contains wormwood, and some old fuck in the early 1900s was doing experiments where he was taking wormwood oil and halucinating. His studies were misconstrued to imply that absinthe was halucinogenic.
In turn this was exaggerated by bohemian artists and writers of the era who basically wanted to be cool and said "yeah this shit waaaavy bro" because it made it seem more dangerous or exclusive. People like Oscar Wilde etc.
In the 90s it was suggested that thujone, the active ingredient in wormwood, which was used in medieval times as an antiparasitic and painkiller, was chemically similar to THC, the active ingredient in weed. Again, disproved. Even if it were true the levels of thujone in absinthe are basically trace.
The only thing in absinthe that will kill you is alchohol. The real reason Absinthe is dangerous is because it is often bottled at ABVs as high as 90%, and its the sort of thing people drink right at the end of the night when they're feeling invincible, putting them from "fucked" to "alchohol poisoned"
Anyone who tells you they got halucinations off absinthe is a liar, there's no chemical reason you would halucinate from drinking it.
