  • Through my years of teaching, I have been searching for a harp exercise book that included scales, triads, chords, and arpeggios in various keys, with fingerings and markings specifically for harpists.
    But it didn't exist, so I made it myself.

    Hello friends, this has been a project many months in the making. The actual time put into making these harp exercise books was just over 40 hours, but between being interrupted a few times and having lots of other projects on the go, it's been just over 9 months of working on this project.
    So I'm very glad to have it be done and ready to share with the world! I've had some moments of impostor syndrome while working on these books, thinking things like "Who am I to make a technique book?!"
    But ultimately, it's something I've really wanted to be able to use with my students, and that's where this is coming from. I'm sure I can't be the only one, so I'm very happy to share the finished ebooks with whomever wants them. If you don't feel it's something you or your students need, that's totally fine too.
    Anyway. I have all kinds of rants about why I think these exercises are important, but they're all in the video, I'll just let you watch that instead :P

    I'm actually SHOCKED to find out there weren't harp resources for these simple (crucial) exercises! I feel like there are a billion choices for pianists or other stringed instrumentalists to choose from. It's awesome that you've taken the leap to make them available yourself

    I love that you saw a problem with there being an incomplete technical repetoire for the harp and have now just made one of the definitive texts for everyone. This is so awesome

      @@SamanthaBallard Absolutely - the Harp is fascinating to me. I think you can attribute my love for that instrument back to Final Fantasy because I will for ever associate the harp with the Prelude theme. :D

    While in college, I went on exchange and I met this canadian girl who had an issue with a fellow roommate. So she wrote (according to her) a "strongly-worded letter" to the University to solve it. It was the most polite and non-confrontational letter ever, and I couldn't help it but to laugh at the stereotype of canadians being nice, kind and non-confrontational.
    Fast forward to 2023, and I see yet another canadian girl complaining about the lack of books about basic exercises for harpists. But she does it in such a way that ends up being constructive criticism and she even made her own book to solve the issue.
    What would we do without you, canadian people

    This is great! Also now I understand when I went to a harp teacher in UK (I'm in Australia) she was confused why I crossed 4 then 3 asc. and 3 then 4 desc! I think she was very heavy on the ABRSM style! :P

      There are some that I like! Harp exercises for agility and speed by Deborah Friou, Lariviere exercises for the harp, and Salzedo conditioning exercises are some of my favourites but I also love to get back to basics with the scales, chords, and arpeggios :)

    I have the harp exercises for agility and speed by Deborah Friou. How is the book you made different?

    • @SamanthaBallard
      @SamanthaBallard  Год назад

      As I mentioned in the video, the books I made aren't the "exercisey" kinds of exercises with configurations of notes that are based on basic patterns, but aren't the plain and simple scales, triads, and arpeggios.
      And the books I made have all the exercises in several keys; the Deborah Friou is in C major only.
      The Friou is a great book, but it's really not the same at all.

      @@SamanthaBallard ok so for beginners it is best to start with your book and later use the Friou? Thanks

    • @SamanthaBallard
      @SamanthaBallard  Год назад

      @@melissasirois1508 I think there are lots of ways you could use them in tandem, and I often do that, but I don't think one or the other is necessarily better to start with. If you're working with a teacher I would definitely ask their recommendation on where to start with technique!
