I bought one of these last month, second hand ( ebay ) with 3455 k on the clocks for £1250. At 69 years of age and after having both knee joints replaced my sports bike days have long gone, but I am having much more fun on this. It is light ( a great help moving about in the garage ) and, although a modest 29 bhp it goes very nicely and sounds wonderful. The gearbox is smooth, neutral is found easily and the gear ratios are spot on.
I thought the tyres would be " different " from road tyres, but I can not tell any difference, and I think they may still be the originals. All in all an excellent Bike for not much money. Thank you Mash.
Sounds like a bargain, and yes, there's definitely something to be said for smaller lighter bikes. Enjoy!
Brings back some memories and the kick start is an added bonus for me.
Yes, I really like retro bikes too. And like you, having a kick start is actually really useful. I had a battery go flat on another bike recently but with no kick start (or jump leads) I was stuck!
Had one. It's based on a Honda cb400ss a Japan only bike. Vibration was terrible over 50. Truth is would have been better off on 125. But it looks so good. Spares were a problem as importer went broke. But that was 2019. Rear wheel was slightly buckled for no apparent reason. Loved the look and sound but would not get another
Thanks for adding your long term owners experience. Which doesn't sound great 😬
I've got the one marketed for North America, the Genuine G400C. It's so much fun! I just putt around, but it's a hoot. A tad vibratey anywhere above 7k rpm tho. 😂
Great review from a riding perspective
Cheers! Love your channel too, especially your current project build :)
Honda CB400SS circa 2002-2006... yep looks 100% the same, and that ain't a bad thing!
You're right, VERY similar and does look great!
Great review thank you! here in America it’s called the G 400 by genuine I’m buying one in green
Thanks and enjoy!
Unfortunately no scrambler in the works.
I got the green one, too! Only 600 mi on it so far. So fun putting around on a weekend! ❤
Looks a good practical everyday bike, and probably not sore on the fuel either.
Yes, it's a good fun little bike that could be used for everything really. Fuel wise then I couldn't find any official figures but I agree it should get decent MPG.
Great video :)
Thanks Daniel!
I rewound a couple of times before I realised you were in Otley and ilkley where I live. I want to have a look at this new Mash 650 XT Trail just announced. Is the Keighley dealer still selling MASH ?
Hi Stuart. I think they are still a MASH dealer but am not 100% sure. It's probably best to get in touch with them directly. Their website is www.ridemotorbikes.co.uk/ and ask to speak to Pete.
In your opinion how different is it from a GN 125 Suzuki if it had a bigger engine size wise?
My impression is that they are quite a similar size , though the Mash is much more powerful and heavier.
Out of interest I just looked up the dimensions which are as follows:
Suzuki GN125
1945mm long, 815 wide, 1110mm high. Seat height of 735mm.
Mash Dirtstar
2130mm long, 740 wide, 1130mm high. Seat height of 780mm.
Hi, would this be a good bike to do a long trip on? looking to do an overland trip. easy to get spare parts etc? easy to fix?
Personally, I'd do something like that on a bike from a mainstream manufacturer like Honda (and bike like a 500X). That way, parts will never be an issue and garages will be familiar with it.
How would you compare it to swm gran milano? It would be same parts with swm having larger engine and being put together in Italy. Is swm better quality?
It' a very different bike to ride to the Gran Milano. The Mash is decent quaility but I do think the SWM seems slightly higher. But as I say, the 2 bikes are very different styles etc so difficult to do a comparison.
@@RichRides I'm thinking of getting a gran milano as a daily commuter, so Im mostly concerned about reliability. The other option is a royal enfield 500. Would swm quality be similar to the royal enfield?
@@londo0 I'd say they are of similar quality from initial impressions. If you're looking at new rather than used, take a look at the new Royal Enfield 650 Interceptor as they are a similar cost. The RE 650 is a great bike which I reviewed here ruclips.net/video/qWh3Xs40yhc/видео.html
hello, I'm from germany and also drive a Mash 400 Scrambler, a really great motorcycle. I'm looking for a carrier like on your Scrambler. Where can I buy it?
Glad you like the Scrambler :) The bike was borrowed from my local dealer for the review and I think it is one the accessories from Mash themselves ( www.mash-motors.fr/en/213-accessories?p=4 ). Your local dealer should be able to get one for you.
Hi ich überlege mir eins zu kaufen, wie bequem ist er auf der Autobahn? Kann man sorgenfrei mit 120 kmh 300-400 km cruisen?
I'd like to see how to start it using the kickstarter.
I didn't actually use it but they are really useful to have as a backup.
Looks like a fun machine, what's the top speed in mph please?
I believe the top speed is around 85mph which is fine for a bike of this type imo :)
@@RichRidesI agree, 85mph is good for a 400 single. My main bike is a Triumph Thruxton 900 but I've been looking for something smaller for the winter, I think I've found it :) Thanks for your reply.
@@strawdog9964 No worries :)
will it cruise at 70 mph on motorway?
Yes it should be fine for that even if not really a long distance cruiser
Hey man I live in Alabama and I want this bike. How do I go about getting it. A S A P. ?????
I'm not sure if Mash have any dealers in the USA but it may be worth asking them here www.mash-motors.fr/contact
Where are the Mash dealers in the USA?
I just had a look on their website and it doesn't look like they have any dealers in the USA :( www.mash-motors.fr/revendeurs
Whats the top Speed?
It has an official top speed of 95mph
Better than the Himalayan?
It's quite a different style of bike to the Himalayan so you can't really compare like for like. I should be reviewing a Himalayan though in the next few weeks so feel free to subscribe to the channel if you haven't already.
Easier to maintain than a Himalayan
single or twin ????
It's a single
@@RichRides sorry its a twin
@@tomlyth739 it was definitely a single that I rode, and this backs that up www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/bikes/mash/mash-scrambler
1,54 Really? So why's it called a 400 then?
It is a 400cc, but the design is based on the old Honda 500 engine. A different bore and stroke though hence the cc difference.
Nice review.
Would you say this might be almost identical to the ‘believed’ 400cc that Mutt motorcycles are planning on releasing soon - or whenever this stupid virus rubbish finishes !!
I'd imagine (though not sure!) that the 400cc Mutt would be based on this engine. I have found that the Mutt's parts seem better quality than some of the other similar based bikes though. I've a review of both a 125cc and 250cc Mutt on my channel too if you've not already seen them
Nice bike not keen on the colours
These bikes are made by shineray in China, mash just puts a new paint job on it and sells it for twice the price we have here in China
Yes Shineray make a lot of these that are then rebranded and some parts swapped and sold here in the UK
