I have an avocado tree over 6 ft tall that I grew from a seed. in the house , have a few more but not as tall , good luck too all , you can do it , I also have about 20 lemon trees growing one is about 3 feet tall , let's all raise green stuff !!!
I've got an avocado plant growing back home, we planted the pit in soil and it sprouted just fine. It's got maybe a year and a half of growth and it's about 5 ft tall! I treat it as a member of the family now
lol... I did 10, got only one to make it to a year old, and it died on me. I just tried 7 more in the water, we ll see what happens! Lemon trees are a lot easier.
sitting on the patio having drinks and watching your video, and all of the sudden I was slamming my drinks! Avocado, avocado, avocado! It will now be an unspoken tradition, Avocado!
Though he only showed till roots came in...another person on youtube said you have to peel off the skin after washing thoroughly. Said the skin inhibits growth
ok I never had good luck growing the seed till I pulled off the brown outer layer then I put it in a Ziploc bag in the corner part with the seen covered halfway with water and tapped it to my kitchen window and wow they grew thick roots so no toothpicks or cup of water for me anymore
Bravo for your experience Bro' Mix half an Avocado, sugar and fresh milk ... Et c'est un délice pour les papilles !!! Bravo from Paris (France) ... Bonne continuation ...
I just started from a seed.. could you tell me why would it be better? Somewhere on the internet, I've read that you shouldn't peel off the brown skin, some pages on net say you should. What's the main point? Doest the seed "hatch" faster? Thanks for answers :)
MrMaticko when you leave the brown skin on it makes it harder for the sprout to split open & henders the avocado growth. the brown skin becomes hard and stops the root from coming out of the bottom (:
lul baby thanks man, i have already 6 avocados in my glasses, 2 already spouted thanks to this technique!:) i've peeled others maybe a week later and they look good. Anyway, I'm from Slovenia, from the part that has mediterranean climate. In winters temperatures may drop to even -5°C so I'd raise them as house plants that I'd put outside from spring till late fall, you think that's good idea?
I did that cup/water method & stick some seeds around my jade plants & jus saw 4 avocados seeding from the pot soil 4 inches high while the seeds in the cup still rooting, so I jus removed all the seeds from the cup & stick them to directly to the potted soil. So it's easier to jus stick them to soil & water it every couple days, but make sure u peel the skin 1st.
I read not to plant avocados together as the root system will "fight" for nutrients, entangle, and eventually kill the plant. Just thought I'd share what I just learned.
i will defy the laws of nature and make a short avocado bush! already have a pot with 8 pits growing in it. Mostly for decoration but im hoping i can keep it the same size forever. They are all about 3 to 10 inches, many big leaves and all seem healthy and fine to me. Been growing them in full sunlight
I soaked 7 avocado seeds in water for several days and after they split open on their own I then planted all 7 in potting soil but I COVERED them completely. I didn't leave the tops uncovered as you did. After a few weeks 3 of them are growing beautifully. Nothing has happened in the other 4. I'm getting better results with this method than in just putting them in water with toothpicks.
Thanks for this and all your videos..I am learning from them. Much appreciate your experiments!! I have one organic avacado that is sprouting finally!!! :) Happy Planting!!
All these videos about avocado trees and very well, but you don't really need all these time wasting contraptions. I threw a few of them on my organic compost heap and a few months later there were leaves poking through the surface. All I had to do was carefully dig them out and pot them - easy! Doesn't even matter which way up the stones lay, plants no where the surface is, they all do. And - I live in Cornwall UK, not the warmest climate...
I found that if you just wait long enough, they're all going to germinate. I tried about 7 seeds, different conditions - light, shade, warm, a bit colder, all in tap water. There are great differences in growing speed though. It's a very fun plant to grow.
If you buy Organic Avocado's start in dark cup of water like a solo cup, and then plant in soil once it roots. You will have better results. Also add just a tiny bit of Honey to the water each week. I take a tooth pick dip in honey wipe most off and put in water remove in a day. I have Avocado's all over my garden in Washington state every summer. Some I dig up take inside others I let winter over. If protected it will come back if not it dies off. As a Vegetarian I eat a lot of them and I plant every seed. Organic veggies and fruit will sprout almost every time. Others have a poison on them call a growth inhibitors and can cause the sprouting to be very slow or not at all.
Hi Teddy Thanks for the information. I'm going to try this in Belgium and will try to keep them as a houseplant as for the climate isn't that warm here. I'll keep you posted. Enjoyed watching your videos!
Very Good Amigo ...settles that question about using soil to get them started ...i have changed my water because it gets slimy and worry about a fungus ...ok see you ..You did well !
Thank you for your time and effort for this. I am going to grow mine! I thumbs up and subscribe. More about plants for Minnesota. Also I feel your holding back. Maybe a toast or saga in the middle, a song for the plants and us.
Thank you for sharing this interesting experiment. I agree with KingOrvil17 that darkness during the sprouting will improve results. Also the quality of the water is important. Your mixed results with fresh-water-weekly may have to do with chlorides in the fresh water, which plants do not like. If you filter the water and leave it in a clear glass bottle in the sunlight for a day, it will be more like natural water and the plant will like it more. Using filtered rain water is even better. With better water, you may find the fresh-water-weekly group to grow much faster.
I washed my seed thoroughly (so it didn't feel slimy) and did the no change method, I don't know if that's wrong but it seems to be going well so far, I have a root and am waiting to see what will happen. I haven't had any mould grow in the cup. some people recommend peeling the brown layer off, if you have done an experiment or can be bothered doing one, which one works better?
Thank you for putting the time line in. i have watched so many vids and thrown away the seeds after a month cause nothing has happened. simply cause no one eles said how long it takes to germ
TheSUPERHAPPY1 It won't matter. The skin around the pit is nothing the force of nature can't handle. If it's gonna crack it will crack, even if it stands between two bricks.
Omg two months later and they're just starting to root!? Maybe it's because you put them in the window. They're supposed to be in in a relatively dark place or at least away from direct/indirect sunlight. Kind of like potatoes but less intense lol
Counting down from the left to the right. When I grew my avocado seed It was as big as the 2nd Avocado. Even a little bit smaller but bigger than the 8th Avocado. It sprouted and became 5 and a half inches tall. It is a month and almost a half old. (I think.....) It mostly focused on the roots for 4 or 5 weeks then started to spout. After done sprouting it mostly focused on leafs and roots. I never changed out the water. Only refilled it. Very first avocado I've ever worked with in meh life. Lol. Beginners luck. Tho I did use warm water. I always use warm water almost every plant I've grown and it's does me well. It grows quite fast. Try warm water next time and see if it does good.
The seed itself (shell) releases nutrients into the water so changing the water out will wash out all the nutrients stunting the growth or causing it to die. Its like placenta for plants
i know that this is back in 2013, i love growing avocados even though i am in canada where avocados can never grow outdoors due to weather changes and such. whenever i grow or start off, i always peel the skin off the avocados to help it better
I have grown an avocado tree from seed and its still growing on water, I've changed the water only once after few months being on it, I still haven't put soil, the leafs are beautiful and the roots, now I am growing the second one.
my plant is only a inch tall now 2/13/18 I got luck it had roots right out of the avocado I had it in the soil only 3 weeks and the avocado tasted great as well jumbo one too..
The unfortunate truth about growing Avocado's from the pit like he has done, 85% will never fruit and the ones that do take 15+ years before they start to produce fruit. If you want a Avocado tree to produce fruit like im sure you all do, then the only way is to purchase a grafted Avocado tree, their are many different varieties such as your Hass, Reed, Fuerte, Bacon Sheppard, Pinkerton, Sharwill and Wurtz to name a few. Avocado's come in two varieties such as your "A" variety which are: Hass, Pinkerton, Wurtz and Reed. The "B" variety Avocado's are: Fuerte, Bacon, Sheppard and Sharwill. Its true Avocado's are self pollinators to a degree, So if you go and plant a grafted Hass tree you will defiantly receive fruit from that tree between 2 to 4 years generally speaking. However if you also planted a Fuerte or any of the "B" Avocado varieties with in 30 meters or 100 feet of your Hass tree you will receive at least triple the yield, due to the flowers pollinating by opening and coinciding with each other as opposed to a single Avocado tree on its own. Just remember when putting a Avocado pit in water like this guy is showing, chances are that tree will never grow fruit and the small amount that do will take 15+ years before they do begin to fruit. However in saying that on the very odd occasion I have read on many forums where some people grew a Avocado plant from the Pip which ended up bearing fruit within a 4 year period however remember this seldom occurs. Good luck.
Not true my 2 avocado trees fruited in 5 years and yeah the outer skin was super thin but would mostly use for guacamole lol but now I know about grafting
I got one thats growing so fast that the root is already touching the bottom of the water bottle.should i put it in something bigger so the root can grow longer ?
The roots will just curl around. Not a big deal. Actually makes it easier to pot up when the time comes, rather than one giant long straight tap root. Cheers!
I would really love to an update on how your trees are doing now. Have you grown anymore since? I just tried the water cup method myself for two pits, what do you think the chance of one of them sprouting is?
Growing avocado trees can be a bit tricky. There are several steps and a lot of care must be taken. They are fragile plants until they become a small sapling tree. I once grew one to a reasonable size. Then, when I planted it outside a deer came by one night and chomped it right down to the ground!
Teddy, tell me how/when to put my avocado tree in the ground, please. I started a tree from a pit about 5 years ago. I've repotted it about 3 times. It's in a large pot. I stand next to it, and it's my height (5'4") I think it's ready for the ground. I live in Houston. (Hot and humid) It just keeps outgrowing pots. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
The plant itself can go in the ground at any time. It's all about temperature and humidity. You don't have to grow the plant to 5 feet tall if you can provide the right heat and humidity. Cheers
what kind of soil works best for Avocado? I've been trying to grow but mine always die :( . Their leaves start shriveling and drying off or turn yellow and then brown and idk why.
The toothpick in water never worked for me. I had 5 pits in pots buried just under the dirt. I covered them with a cut out bottom of a plastic plant container. I watered daily. They’re growing great. I also did some that I wrapped in a moist paper towel and put in a ziplock. I had to periodically spritz the paper towel. They grew roots well but aren’t growing as well as those grown in dirt.
I threw a seed in with my piranha as a joke for my 15yr old, saying she laid an egg, to my astonishment, he replied "fish have thousands of eggs", I wittilied responded that she's really close to the dinosaurs. More so than other fish because she's from the Amazon and such. He loved/ loves dinosaurs so it didn't take much more convincing n i hooked him. Told him right away though what it was. We laughed. Well........ now i have an 8 inch stem flying towards the top of the water faster than any of those in your model demonstration. This thing cracked itself right down the middle and made a home in with my piranha in her 55 gallon bedroom.😆😁 Um. Any advice? I'm gonna replant it cause of the awesome story of how it came about. I'd let it grow in the aquarium, but it's sucking water fast. And I'd be really unfortunate if the roots busted the glass eventually.
At least you have several trees going... they will benefit and actually pollinate during flowering. You plan on Grafting? if not you'll have to wait around 7-8 years for them to mature and give you nice and thick ones. Grafting cuts the maturing time to about 4 years.
No, the seeds were inactive. Some Seeds do not grow and are dead. I guess they intentionally make it so we have to go and buy the fruit from supermarkets!
YES KEEP GROWING MY ARMY

AVOCADO 1 just popped up at my house. come get your menions.

I have an avocado tree over 6 ft tall that I grew from a seed. in the house , have a few more but not as tall , good luck too all , you can do it , I also have about 20 lemon trees growing one is about 3 feet tall , let's all raise green stuff !!!
Yes I agree, green stuff is very good.
Do they give you fruit?
Mary Paris Has your avocado tree produced fruit?
How long did it take to grow that big?
Mary Paris that's awesome 😁
The 2 avocado seeds that you say won't make
Actually was the only ones that grow
Seed have a feeling too
I've got an avocado plant growing back home, we planted the pit in soil and it sprouted just fine. It's got maybe a year and a half of growth and it's about 5 ft tall! I treat it as a member of the family now

😂😂😂
lol... I did 10, got only one to make it to a year old, and it died on me. I just tried 7 more in the water, we ll see what happens! Lemon trees are a lot easier.

Great... let's make turn it into a movement.
I'm drinking wine in my kitchen, hearing avocado avocado and laughing!
Thanks Teddyd30 for your tips. I wan't to try this since a while but did not know how to start it! Hopefully one of my two seeds will work!
Bon chance, mon amis!

Can u make a video on it
Same
This is interesting! I think I’ll try that
Just had to come here and say thank you so much!!!! This was really effective.
I love comparison tests like this! Thank you that's really helpful :)
Loved your video! Trying the 3 different methods was a great idea!! Thank you for posting!!
You can put them straight into soil. I've planted 7 avocado seeds and I have 7 avocado trees
Thanks for the video, I'm trying it with my 5 year old we're only two days in
Bravo for your experience Bro'
Mix half an Avocado, sugar and fresh milk ... Et c'est un délice pour les papilles !!!

Try same thing except peel outer brown skin off them all
Ed Turner exactly!

Thanks So Much!! I've been trying for years (with no luck) to germinate my avocado seeds.

THX FOR THE AWESOME EXPERIMENT NOW I CAN GROW MY OWN THANK YOU VERY MUCH
That small seed in the 2nd group overheard you saying that he might not make it, and he was like 🤔 I'll show you mister 😂
Haha "drink every time I say avocado!" Love it!
Peeling skin off helps a lot for the seed to split, also picking the bottom button where the root is to sprout out helps also for the seed to split.
I soaked 7 avocado seeds in water for several days and after they split open on their own I then planted all 7 in potting soil but I COVERED them completely. I didn't leave the tops uncovered as you did. After a few weeks 3 of them are growing beautifully. Nothing has happened in the other 4. Entertaining, educational, fun! I will try this. Thanks! Carolyn P.
Thank you very much for the video. Will try to grow an avocado now :)
+Renata Nowakowska-Pace Let me know how it works!!
The thin brown layer of skin on the seed could be peeled of so the root and plant can come out easier
+Victoria Clawson That layer is called the seed coat. Every seed has one. I don't think it needs to be peeled.
+teddyd30 not always but with avocados I've tried both and peeling it helps for it to germinate faster
+Victoria Clawson I've always peeled mine and it's always a success :)
@@tedsbackyard yes it does that's why all your avocados died
Thanks for this and all your videos..I am learning from them. Much appreciate your experiments!!
I have one organic avacado that is sprouting finally!!! :)
Happy Planting!!
+Dottie Best Glad to hear of your success! Thanks!
Haha I loved the wave at the end 😂
Awesome thanks for doing this I gave up after a month I thought nothing was going to happen I had 5 on my windowsill with water changing.

Interesting experiment, thank you! Boy, takes a while!!
Hi Teddy
Thanks for the information. I'm going to try this in Belgium and will try to keep them as a houseplant as for the climate isn't that warm here.
I'll keep you posted.

Thank you for sharing this interesting experiment. I agree with KingOrvil17 that darkness during the sprouting will improve results. Also the quality of the water is important. Your mixed results with fresh-water-weekly may have to do with chlorides in the fresh water, which plants do not like. What would be better in terms of Hard or Soft water? I'm in a very Hard water area in the UK and my first try with this is going very well.

thats why you graft it when it is bigger, who is stupid enough to wait that much time.
Not true my 2 avocado trees fruited in 5 years and yeah the outer skin was super thin but would mostly use for guacamole lol but now I know about grafting

I also did some that I wrapped in a moist paper towel and put in a ziplock. I had to periodically spritz the paper towel. They grew roots well but aren’t growing as well as those grown in dirt.
Great!! I'm gonna try this 😊
I threw a seed in with my piranha as a joke for my 15yr old, saying she laid an egg, to my astonishment, he replied "fish have thousands of eggs", I wittilied responded that she's really close to the dinosaurs.
I seen your update 5 years ago. Did you ever get any avocados? I don’t see any more updates under your videos. Thank you!
At least you have several trees going... they will benefit and actually pollinate during flowering.
You plan on Grafting? if not you'll have to wait around 7-8 years for them to mature and give you nice and thick ones. Grafting cuts the maturing time to about 4 years.
Very informative
Thanks for sharing it, I have had them soaked in water for over six months and nothing has happened so far!
I guess you put the seeds upside down.
No, the seeds were inactive. Some Seeds do not grow and are dead. I guess they intentionally make it so we have to go and buy the fruit from supermarkets!
Perhaps you can give me tips for doing this in Delaware. Winter is brutal here
if you peel the seed coat off first, it will grow faster. I did it and it rooted in a month with weekly water change
Do you have any info on the water you use? Cold/warm, mineral/tap. I am curious if the water quality affects the results at all
"Avocado avocado avocado" lol 🍻
