Thanks Sam. what a fantastic review. This SUV looks really amazing. It's interior looks grand. Did you check the cabin noice of this car in terms of decibels? I believe it's cabin is queiter than others due to double pane windows. Do you have any objective measurement by any chance? Lot of people are speculating it's fuel consumption. Another reviewer on youtube claimed 11 ltrs/100 km.
a bit old news mate, GWM alone sells now well over 30.000 vehicles a year and growing. Since they relaunched in 2019, they have gone from a few thousand to over 100,000 in 3 years. Add to that MG, LDV, BYD and Chery, that is some 100,000 plus cars sold a year, So, if that aint popular for you I don't know what is....
My only concern with this car will be its long term reliability. I know there is a 7yr(or maybe 10yr) warranty on offer, but I'm interested to know if after 150000 km this car still functions flawlessly or not. And remember a landcruser holds a reasonable value even after 15 years. I doubt this car will have any value after 10 yrs.
Agreed, still unproven in Australia. What is local support and servicing like in Australia for GWM cars? What about spare parts if needed, what's the lead time?
Everyone who wanna buy it, pls check your pocket when putting fuel as i owns tank 300 and it is not an city or ecnomical car, fuel consumption is high so be carwful and be mindful beforw buying it
What you said is correct. In China, these tanks have been widely used for many years in the Xizang Plateau, the roof of the world, and in the deserts of Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia.
Lots of money indeed but the fuel consumption 😢... Those savings gained financially will be directed there. In South Africa it's coming soon as well. Should sell well but I can see the owners complaining about fuel consumption
I will definitely buy one but I will wait a few more years. These Chinese vehicles have been improving very well and a few years from now this will be great quality and value for money than Toyotas
2L turbo is very small for a mid-size SUV like the GWM Tank 500. It will work that 2L hard enough to use as much, or more, fuel as a 3.5L. Toyota should offer the Sequoia in Australia. It sells for significantly less than the LC300 and has more interior space.

I would be nice if journalists would use the METRIC measurement system Australia adopted in 1974 and stop using the Imperial measurement system when describing size like height! After all, it's been more than 50 years now!!!
The great thing about Aussies is, we're adaptable - and while we've been using the metric system for some time now, we're pretty good at both casually describing our height in feet and inches, as well as being able to convert that into scale that's easy to picture. 😉
In the real life, V8 landcruiser are still the king, you just can’t disagree! This thing will sell really well once Toyota drop the pretty boy Prado for the new plain Jane look. Watch this become the soccer mums choice when that occurs.
Was thinking of buying Tank 500 or the new GWM ute coming with V6 3.0L but won't even go to look at one if only hybrid available. Too underpowered with tiny 2.0L and not great towing capacity. For a vehicle this size a 2.0 litre just doesn't cut it. Better off paying more for a Ranger with much bigger engine, considerably more power and 3.5T towing capacity. Or even the new Triton with much more power and also 3.5T towing capacity for not that much more and you are buying vehicle with great reputation and re-sale value.

I'm very impressed. Although the review mentions dynamics my belief is that you wouldn't buy a Tank 500 as a corner carver. As a family truckster to cart 3 kids and adults around in it looks the goods. I never imagine I'd ever need or want a 4wd that mimics a mountain goat but the fact it has some 4wd clout is enticing. Definitely will test drive one in the near future.
Really good review! Keen to see tank 500 towing capability 🎉
Matt Campbell at Right Car channel achieved just above 11 litres across a mix of driving. I think hyper miling in urban setting can achieve circa 9L/100
We will find out more about efficiency in future tests-Sam
@@DrivecomauSam, I owned a RAV4 Cruiser Hybrid. Over 4 years, I think I've averaged around 6L/100K and I hyper mile as a matter of religious habit. I think Toyota's advertised 4.8L/100km is achievable in pure urban driving with a very light foot, empty car - no passenger or load in the boot with say carrying only 10 litre of fuel on average and driven in the warmer months. In the winter, I get 7L + especially on short trips.
@@nostradamus2642that is a bit dissapponting...... My bmw x1 petrol has similar numbers...
@@nostradamus2642GWM hybrid system is combining the internal combustion engine with an electric motor for performance, Toyota's system is for efficiency. Can't really compare the two.
Not even equal to Prado they keep comparing with.
9.6L around town, 8.2 to 8.6L/100.
where does the front passenger airbag deploy? Would be great if the passenger had a tray just above the glovebox like defender
It deploys from the panel in front of dash shelf
If you want a Defender, pay for a Defender !
They need to bring the 700 Tank , aussies will go bananas for it
I just came from watching your tank 300 long term review... Now I'm interested in the tank 500's payload. Did it do any better? is this the GWM i can load up and go camping??
The Tank 500 has a 790kg payload, so you have more to play with. It could be the better choice to load up and take camping, and you can read more here: www.drive.com.au/reviews/2024-gwm-tank-500-australian-first-drive/ and keep an eye out as we'll have a more in-depth video review coming soon.
For those who has doubt about Chinese cars, just go out to have a look, they so look great inside and out!
What is your pick tank 300 or 500?
Can you change the indicator tone?
Sane as all cars no you can’t and no need to
In China, these tanks have been widely used for many years in the Xizang Plateau, the roof of the world, and in the deserts of Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia. The quality of this tank brand is absolutely reliable!
GWM need to bring that tank 400, as well as the PHEV
Y62 patrol owner here.. yes this will be the wife’s next shopping bus
Bring the Tank 400
Bring a bloody v6 here
not a chance. PHEV is coming. Much more powerful and direct.
@@liuyangyangbut..but it’s a V6
@@cocoaiscool2709 so what? The PHEV version outperforme the V6 in every way. The only drawback is absence of 3rd row.
Thanks Sam. what a fantastic review.
So what mileage does a petrol Toyota 300 get?
Lof of metal for the money
Question : Can you actually fold down the rear and second rear down flat so you could fit a mattress or longer objects ?
Yes
Excellent Mums taxi for safety and emissions in the city. All the kit is a bonus. Much better than a dirty diesel
It’s not the highest version for the australia market . Leather Colours only in Black ?
it comes in cream/blue also as i have ordered one
@@wcrash9361 nope crem/blue also
Hopefully the payload is better than the abysmal Tank 300’s 450kg
It is better, 790kg for Ultra - Sam
Where is the bullbar ?
My question is, for the same price, is there any other car that is better?
Yes. A low spec prado.
@@masoudj1185lol but a low spec prado is not better than this
Can't wait for a review of the cannon Alpha
Nice one
the only concern I have probably is the resell value as GWM is not one of the most popular brand in Australia, but I assume it will gets better soon
a bit old news mate, GWM alone sells now well over 30.000 vehicles a year and growing. Since they relaunched in 2019, they have gone from a few thousand to over 100,000 in 3 years. Add to that MG, LDV, BYD and Chery, that is some 100,000 plus cars sold a year, So, if that aint popular for you I don't know what is....
would be good if GWM can get a Australian local team to fine-tune the car
I read the other day they did.
If you have big family, this car is the best budget and best bargains in current Ausyralia 4X4 market.
That front end, Toyota Sequoia circa 2011. Which is a good thing
@@wcrash9361 Toyota Landcruiser has been in Australia for over 50 years, well proven.
Well you have to start somewhere and remember the Chinese brand has improved faster than other brands when they were introduced into the market.
Everyone who wanna buy it, pls check your pocket when putting fuel as i owns tank 300 and it is not an city or ecnomical car, fuel consumption is high so be carwful and be mindful beforw buying it
How is the car soundproofing?
Is the tank 300 a hybrid ?
If not, it will guzzle fuel
Did he just do an entire review without mentioning tow capacity?
Definitely more solid than any Toyota!
9-10L/100km is NOTHING for a car of this size and torque against its competitors.
GWM should introduce the v6 or phev...
How's 70g value for money
I think the economy is pretty good considering you too it off road as well
Tank 700 makes this look like a baby!!
Full black trim, on my list
I will definitely buy one but I will wait a few more years. These Chinese vehicles have been improving very well and a few years from now this will be great quality and value for money than Toyotas
Nowadays if someone still pay more than 100k to buy a Toyota that u can get a better car either tank or patrol for less money, they are stupid.
Steering is adjustable in 3 modes
2L turbo is very small for a mid-size SUV like the GWM Tank 500. It will work that 2L hard enough to use as much, or more, fuel as a 3.5L. Toyota should offer the Sequoia in Australia. It sells for significantly less than the LC300 and has more interior space.
HEV version is 2.0t + electric engine. Same power and torque as a v6t, but more fuel economy
@@Mayson568 I have a Wrangler 4xe (2L turbo + electric). It is enough for a vehicle that weighs 400 lbs less than the Tank 500, but the Tank has a more seats, more payload, and almost twice the tow rating.
@@rich7447well, maybe It depends on what you need a car for. I use this version of Tank for 2 months already, mostly at the city. Power is enough, even if you have 7 people on board. Of course it doesn’t go like a Raptor, but it’s not like a LC Prado 2.7 also.
@@Mayson568 We tend to have larger engines than many places in the world. My wife has the Lexus (GX460) version of the Prado and has about the same acceleration as the Tank 500. It just doesn't have to work very hard to do it (detuned 4.6L v8). Our Wrangler sounds like it is going to explode when you get on the throttle very hard.
@@rich7447in Russia we’ve got several cars, that has a problem with a v6. And also on sale only 5 seats at a v6 version. That’s why I chose a 2.0.
we need the PHEV Hi4T version in Australia!
Imagine if the Nissan Patrol had that interior.... It would sell more units.
Another thing is when we can expect the 400 and 700 in Australia? 900? Forget about it mate.
Is that the one who’s back wheels lift off the ground under heavy braking?
I think you're thinking about the Prado which nearly rolled over in the Moose test
No, that's the Tank 300. I couldn't get this to do the same trick -Sam
In the real life, V8 landcruiser are still the king, you just can’t disagree! Most people driving a Tank 300 or 500 are not really a 4*4 person, they are either a 50 years old Chinese lady who don’t even have a license; or some “professional car dudes” that trying to promote you the parts they’re selling😂.
"..and acceleration, it's not too bad either...its good enough..."
Seriously? It 0-100 in under 7 seconds!? Honestly this review was terrible.
I seriously loved this car until I read and now heard how fuel inefficient this thing is. 13L/100kms lol!
A bit far off 8.5L/100! Nice marketing GWM!
Little buddy thinks a 300 series is a fancy shell with dodgy chinese components underneath 😅 needed a laugh lil buddo.
Just want to say, if toyota could design such a pretty car they will do even better. The 300 is an ugly design in my opinion.
Seriously? This does 0-100 in under 7 seconds? What you want it to perform like Golf R or something?

My Prado is 15 years old, has 180,000k on the clock and is still like a new car. So far, it has been batteries, tyres and a set of brake pads. I wonder what a Tank will be like in 15 years?
Seeing as they already made with better quality steel and more advanced design and engineering goes than an old prado I see them lasting a lot longer
