One of Iron Maiden's masterpiece songs. A song that is about a poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. With the change ups in the song, it doesn't seem as long as it is. The slow portion of the song represents the ship adrift at sea. Shortly after this was released I was a senior in HS and we read the poem for my British Literature class and my teacher let me bring this song and play it for class. If you research the story you'll more fully understand the song and the moral it teaches stated at the end.
I saw them play this song the year it came out (1984) and then again at this show in NJ 24 years later. Great both times but this one's better, especially the vocals.
The spoken words during that slow part are quoted from the Coleridge poem this song is based on; Bruce also sings a couple of lines quoted from the poem: "Day after day, day after day, we suck no wind nor motion/ As idle as a painted ship, upon a painted ocean/ Water! Water everywhere, and all the boards did shrink/ Water! Water everywhere, nor any drop to drink." Great song and reaction!

You watched the wrong song video...Listen people when watching or listening to Iron Maiden songs or videos always watch & listen to the older 1980's Iron Maiden stuff when Bruce Dickinson's voice was in it's prime. I will leave you a link below to a different video version of the same song 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' from 1985 when back when Bruce's voice sounded more opera like then it was metal.
