Thank you so much 😊 I’m so grateful for this video, I had a USB drive with 6000+ family photos ranging over about seven years and thought that they were lost, many of my family members have passed so this is all that I have left, and now My computer recognizes it again❤️
And now you are making several backups right ?! One online ; one kept outside of the house with a trusted person and one ready to grab if you have to leave in a hurry. And yes ,do it on a SSD (Solid State Drive ) ;safer, studier and more room. Maybe keep one in the bank in a safety deposit box as well. Your're welcome :) A harddisk or USB ,it is not if they fail but when...!
Thank you! I've been looking for a fix, watched many RUclips to no avail. I tried your msdt.exe solution and it worked! Now my wireless mouse and my USB microphone are recognized by Win 10. I think the devices are not defective, but the USB port driver was. Thanks again. from Philippines.
I also tried it by msdt. However, my computer finds errors but does not correct them. Restart it and everything but, however it does not download / install anything.
This video saved me a lot of time instead of transferring wirelessly and waiting for so long. Thank you so much man, Appreciate you taking the time and effort to make this video!
First of all thank you for your information and time.. I tried all the options you mentioned but no results, and i wanted to ask you : what if the Hardware ID is not known ... ? I got only the USB\VID_0000&PID_0002\5&3b489c26&0&2 code 43 Thank you again for your help and hope you'll have a solution for this one.
First . go to control panel and search administration tool without clicking on that application Second. There will be an option for. Create and format hard disk partitions , click on it Third. Scroll or it will be there name of your usb drive. Fourth. Right click and click on format Then press ok. Done . by the way you can go on disk management instead of this long process
One thing I did was, Go into Disk Management I found out that my USB had unallocated space on it. So I right clicked on where it said "Unallocated" and clicked on New Simple Task and just clicked NEXT all the way to the end. And after that I formated the USB device by right clicking on it and clicking on format. And was recognized again. Hope this helps you guys. (Keep in mind that this will wipe clean your USB device)
You also see something like that when the device is to far away the computer and the voltage drop across the wire is to much, so you either self power with a 5 /12 volt power supply or use a USB hub Posted on Facebook Bye for now Cheers
Thanks for the timely vid Brian, I had this issue last Sunday, the only thing that fixed it was changing the drive letter of my USB Flash Drive --> Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer Management\Storage\Disk Management.
I was having issues with my external HD's connected through a powered USB 3 hub. Windows just stopped detecting it. The thing that worked for me was: Device Manage > View > Show Hidden Devices > uninstall all greyed out USB items > reboot. My HD's have been working smoothly ever since. Not saying this will work in your particular case, but have a look and see if you have any greyed out USB devices listed.
Thank you for this video! Your style is very clear and concise, perfect for these tutorials! I faced this issue while using an old wireless receiver for Xbox 360 controllers. Essentially, after some use, the receiver would be identified by windows as an unknown usb device, and I wouldn't be able to manually select the drivers for it as windows would automatically find the "best" drivers. Turns out that uninstalling the device from the hidden devices list gets rid of the issue. So instead of an "unknown usb device" windows would only classify it as an "unknown device" which allowed me to manually pick the right drivers. Not exactly the use case you described, but it worked nonetheless! I'll make sure to check out your other videos as well!
Excellent information to troubleshoot. Thank you bunches. Had that problem intermittently with a USB hard drive. It turned out that not all USB ports are equal. The drive didn't get enough power.
how about a (port reset failed) problem? My portable hard drive fell off the computer, and I have a bad feeling I won't be able to get all my files back. I'm trying to get drivers for the device and hope that it helps.
My keyboard stopped working I tried literally everything, in the end I just had to update my AMD motherboard and all it’s drivers through the main website and it worked. Thanks for the tip!
I’ll have just a USB cord plugged into my USB on my computer and it says unknown device and it keeps popping up every for five seconds saying unknown device will this work for that because the USB cord does not have a driver
Would this also be because of the port just being ‘worn out’ or damaged? Because i plugged the device into a different port and it worked fine, it also worked when i plugged it into a different computer.
Thank you so much my friend. I literally uninstalled the driver, plugged it back in and it recognized it. Seriously I am thankful for this. I was about to return my device.
My system is an ASUS ROG Strixx Scar II gaming laptop. This all started about 3 months ago when I ran windows update and it installed 21h1 update or some shit. I am a bit computer savvy, certainly not an expert by any means. Since that update (and restarting PC) I am constantly being bombarded with "USB device not recognized". It pops up every second and makes the annoying sound when you connect or disconnect a USB device. I tried uninstall/reinstalling drivers, included the latest drivers from ASUS's website. I even tried a complete format, erased everything and re-installed Windows 10 with the version that was preinstalled with my computer. I disconnected my wifi so it couldn't install any updates, but still to no avail. When it finally finished installing I was shocked when this message continued to pop up. By the way, I tested all my USB devices they all work fine. I should not that a day before this happens I did spill a little bit of water on the right numpad, but I immediately dried of off and the computer was running fine for the whole day and the next day as well, until I did that damn update. Maybe it's just a coincidence. I don't know. All I know if that everything was running fine until it installed that update and when I restarted that's when this started to happen. But I was shocked when I formatted and the problem still occurred. If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. I even downloaded a program called Restoro hoping it would detect and fix issues like this, but nothing... This is sooooo frustrating.
Same here. Tried everything. My laptop is now next to useless as I can't connect any devices to it. Mouse, headset, arduino....nothing, I'm so angry right now. It was all fine, then I had to do a restart for updates, then it instantly threw up the USB error :( It now sits there with nothing plugged in, going through endless cycles of telling me "a device was plugged it" (it wasnt) then followed byt the "device is not recognised" window...over and over again. Thanks microsoft.
Those who couldnt find any solution yet i have a solution for you guys... try using a usb external hub then connect the device via hub...it will work just fine...100% gurranted...cheers!!!!
Another type of problem that may accrue is putting a USB 3.0 Into a USB 2.0, and most of the time it will still work, but if possible always put them into there respective USB Type's, I was just having a similar problem because I was doing exactly what I just talked about, and as soon as I put it I to the correct USB Type, Bam it worked fine with no issues. So this is an option as well if it applies to you!
Hey @Britec09, at 3:30-3:35 when you mention performing a search based on the USB's "ID code", I wish you had showed us how to perform said search; as I tried to do the search, but could find nothing.
If there is a lesson to be learned here is that Hardware and Software are not reliable as we used to think they are, at all. Anything can change at any time for any reason, it could even be a missing letter in a code. Incredible.. and I've worked with PCs for years now seeing Windows as the good old reliable OS it is (it is not).

Thank you so much! I had a problem with my Steinberg eLicenser which was not recognised after a cold reboot until I physically reconnected the device when the computer was already finished booting. For me the problem was fixed when I tried Windows PowerShell. Cudos to you for sharing your knowledge, I highly appreciate it!
What's interesting though is (which I want to add to my previous writing) that it seems to also depend on which ports are being used. E. g. when I utilized the USB port inside my computer, the PowerShell diagnostic was not able to fix those problems which reappeared when I plugged the dongle into this port. Also it was not recognised when the port next to the eLicenser's was used by another USB device (in this case my iLok key). Very strange but now it works and I will refuse touching my hardware again.
