Notice how Norma subtly signals the sudden change in her character's demeanor. At the moment that flirtation and amusement ends, and heartbreak and love floods in, she puts out her cigarette in her drink, as if saying, that's it, no more alcohol for me tonight. Best at her craft she was, but with Bob, her best was it's very best!
What an absolutely beautiful performance from both !!! Norma Shearer is something else , I can't imagine a better Amanda . Robert Montgomery is wonderful too , the quick slick delivery of lines so typical of Noels delightful humour . I have only seen Norma Shearer once before in a film version of Romeo and Juliet , where she seemed a little mature for the part , but the acting was superb . Thank you so much Nerweniel !!!
This isn't bad if you've never seen "Private Lives" performed as it was intended to be performed. Shearer just isn't up to the task. Claudette Colbert would have been a better choice.
Yes, Colbert would've been great. I've seen Private Lives on stage twice, in the 70's with Maggie Smith, who was not good, and a few years ago at a local theater which was great. This is an ad for the show and so it's just bits and pieces and you can't hear any dialogue, but I think you can tell even from this how fantastic their Amanda was.....ruclips.net/video/9PqqoevJ4Qs/видео.html Very commanding and bold.
See Norma as Katya go tripping through the beer hall with Ramon Novarro in 'The Student Prince', 1923, and see why Thalberg married her and made her a big star.
@@rogerpropes7129 Norma was already a big star by the time Thalberg married her in 1927 though. :) Thalberg just made sure to curate her projects more carefully after marrying her. :) At one point, by the end of 1925 or so, Norma's films had been bringing in more money than any of the other MGM actresses - and Irving wasn't even really considering marrying Norma at the time.

Did this scene in my acting class- love it

Give her a try in The Divorcee. Oh and also in The Women. Seems like she got an Academy nomination for the latter.
I wish this clip was a little longer and showed when they decided to leave together. I adore this movie!
I wish there were more clips from this movie - like the fighting scenes! Thank you for sharing.

To be honest she is no great beauty but the classic case of how hard works can pay off which is even more encouraging
Chang Anita Hard work, not works. Your friendly YT professor 🤓
Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.

Claudette Colbert would have triumphed as Amanda instead of drippy Shearer who is just not up to the job.
Norma did a spectacular job I don't know what you're talking about
unclealand I love drippy Shearer

I am a big fan of Claudette Colbert but Norma nailed this.
Love the play, but Shearer isn't up to the role.
Of course she was. How ridiculous.

@@GehanCooray Why did he let her play Shakespeare's Juliet in her 30's, with a Romeo over 40?
