This whole ownership and management situation is the baseball equivalent of Matt Canada. When Matt Canada is both the owner and GM, how can you expect him to fire his brother Matt Canada the Manager and Matt Canada the Hitting Coach, and how can you expect anything other than another Matt Canada to be hired?

If they had talent think some of it would shine through by now. No hitter above .300. Though the managerial decisions are mind boggling. Again I ask how is Derek Shelton and his coaching staff are employed? Absolutely stunned he and his staff are not sent packing by now. Was not a fan of Hurdle. This guy is Hurdle on Steriods with the decisions he makes.

Amazing. 96 pitches at the end of the 4th. A walk and a hit in each of those 4 innings. And we lost that game by 3 runs??? Really ??
I never thought scoring runs would be the primary issue this year.
But didn't our "ace " have 100 pitches after five ?
I think the coach is at the mercy of the GM (just like Jone's pitch count). Same guy that is keeping Skenes in AAA while he completely dominates. Same ol Pirates.
it’s so frustrating. mediocrity/last place is never going to end if they don’t make changes. sticking with a system bullheadedly for years instead of rolling with the punches and making tough decisions is what bad franchises do.

We need to acknowledge what Connor Joe is doing. He's probably the team MVP at this point. Enjoy watching him now because he'll be flipped at the trade deadline.
Hes like Jason Kendall in the late 90s, early 2000's. He was a little above average in reality but on this team, they look like gdamn Lou Gehrig.

Hi DK. I really enjoy listening to your Daily Shots, it's a great way to begin my workday. Great take on the problems of our favorite, frustrating franchise. It starts at the top, just like every business.
What will it take for anything to get done about this crappy hitting philosophy? Would the fans have to stop coming to games so it hurts the business's bank account?

Id say Tellez, Suwinski, Bednar, A Chapman and McCutcheon would all be the first ones to go if i took over. Cruz would be moved to 1st base, Alika Williams would go to SS.

At least they did us the favor of falling off the face of the planet before spring has really sprung this year so people can get on with more important things like lawn work, gardening and Steelers OTA's. Next Move: Bring up Skenes maybe a little earlier than planned in an backhanded attempt to throw the fans a bone and get butts back in the seats for those once a week starts. Maybe they'll be lucky enough to push a run across the plate now and then to make the inevitable losses from the meltdown by the bullpen look almost competitive.
Is it just a Pittsburgh thing to hold onto people who are negatively impacting your team because of a desire to be correct? I have examples for all 3 teams, but it feels so much more heinous coming from the Pirates. Keeping Haynes when it's abundantly clear his batting mentality doesn't work, just to be proven right, makes everyone above him appear to be the cartoonist villains we imagine them as. If Ben Cherington, Bob Nutting, or anyone else involved in the process wanted their image changed, this would be a start.

Changing anything no matter how much needed and obvious just proves someone was wrong, and when you're the smartest man in the room, that can't be allowed. Has it ever occurred to these people to hire a hitting coach who actually knows how to hit? Someone to teach them to chock up with 2 strikes and try to make contact rather than swinging as hard as they can, that is when do do swing at pitches when they have 2 strikes on them. DK, you have said before that Williams listens to and or reads your column, but does he actually listen to what is being said?
DK,saying firing Haines wouldnt change anything is horse hockey! What it would do is signal that the Pierats brain trust (or lack therof) has sacrificed Haines to save face and not have to admit that they laid a rotten egg.
Add another middle infielder by the cherington regime in the trade of Brubaker. Why wouldn't you want to face the starter 3 times than facing match up bullpens.
They may not be good at hitting , sometimes rebuilds don't work.

It won’t be long now before you will see the Pirates score 17 runs in ONE game to win that ONE game and go back to doing nothing as usual.
The Rebuild has failed
This team is in a deadful slump. Release Tellez; call up Jake Lamb to platoon with Connor Joe at 1st. Trade Suwinski to the White Sox for Andtew Benintendi. At least Benny is coming around, is a natural Lf'er and has better numbers lifetime. Fore Cherington, Shelton, Hsines and Marin. The re-build HAS to be over! This team has enough talent to content, if the right people are in place. As much as I hate to say it, " Cutch looks done.

It has to stop sometime. Getting swept by the worst team in baseball last year. Give me a break it's on the west coast. The team has been there for five days now. Excuse does not work. No real game plan. No set lineup. The batting coach is a joke and Shelton was a batting coach for how long.
He must laugh all the way to the bank coaching this team.
It all goes back to Nutting. He puts up with this crap farrr to long. If the Pirates had a REAL owner committed to winning, the ultimatum would be out there! This is gtoundhog day 3.0. First the bumbling Littlefield, then the imbecile Huntington, and now the incompetant Cherington. I personally wrote a letter to Cherington, last summer, voicing my severe displeasure how this franchise, and his actions have been a detriment to becoming competitive again. I know the leter was received, necause I sent it return receipt. This organization is a clown show. The Pirates are THE ONLY team in MLB, that has not had a player hit 40 or more home runs, in 52 years. Brian Giles hit 39 once. This once storied franchise, has been burnt to the ground. Completely maddening!
How bout this for a hot take.. Davis is a bust and maybe we should consider forgetting about him. At this point anybody could be that bad at the plate. This team has me heated. How can they play this bad and act, with a straight face, like they’re trying?! Nobody seems to care. Jack, oniel, rowdy and especially Henry seem like they are just waiting for October when their crappy effort will be in the past and they can get back to whatever it is that they actually care about. Trash this whole team sucks so bad I’m so pissed
This organization has a losing culture. Always has and always will under the ownership. The players are not oblivious to the way the team builds its roster by dumpster diving every off season and never makes any attempt to bring in a true upgrade from outside. The 2024 version is Rowdy Telez (sorry, not piling on). He was the cheapest option for playing 1B. The players know winning is not the priority.
now I'm convinced Shelton is purposely losing games....why would he put Cruz in for williams....williams is batting nearly 100 points more....absolutely disgusting and inept...im also convinced suwinski...doesn't know how to swing a bat....
This team is trash right now. We need a real shake up. Being swept by the As is embarrassing and completely unacceptable. Accountability is needed.
If they won't change, then the fans should make them change. STOP going to the game. Don't like it but. Something needs to push them.
