- I love classic cars, I always have. I'm restoring a 1974 Toyota FJ45 currently and the build is taking longer than I would like. Check out the video series here.
• How to Restore a 40 Se...
In the meantime, I am not keen on driving a crappy car while I complete the FJ45. So in a flash of brilliance (or madness), I bought a fully restored 1956 Chevrolet pickup truck as my daily driver. This week on Jafffa Adventures, I share that experience with you. The question is, should you buy a classic car as your daily driver?
I share with you some pitfalls in owning a classic car as your daily driver that will help you avoid potential buyer remorse.
Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride...and of course keep the shiny side up!

You didn’t realise it at the time but you were almost perfectly describing a 79 series😂😂😂
That’s a classic Shane, you are right on the money 😂. Thanks for watching and commenting mate, I sincerely appreciate it 😎👍
My first car was a 1978 Chevy Nova. Those big, ugly, slow Novas. It was so uncomfortable, loud, slow, dangerous, smelled like gas all the time, no climate, no comfort features, yet I had a blast driving it. I still miss that car every day. Never left me stranded on the side of the road, a real road warrior.
That’s a great story mate. It’s amazing how a car can get under your skin, but they do😎👍
Another great video, A lot of people think a car made in the 60s with a few mods will drive the same as a car made in the 2000s.Just does not happen. Thanks Terry.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts mate, and I could not agree more. If you can look past it all, you are a true petrol head😎👍
I'm 16 and have been driving a 1966 plymouth valiant to and from school+ wherever else I need to do for the past couple of months. Only issue i've had was with the starter, which on the valiant was a 10 minute fix.
That’s very cool. Thanks for sharing 😎👍
I daily drove a Chevy nova for years. Best years of my life. Now it’s a weekend/show car but it was an awesome daily
That’s awesome mate, I love the early Nova, great looking car👍😎
Good video. I have a 55 F100 that probably could do the daily but that’s if I don’t care about driving it in rain or snow or leaving it parked where just any opportunist with a tow truck could haul it away. A lot of these questions you propose should be asked but it’s doubtful the smitten would let them stop them from learning the hard way. Crikey, I bought mine off the freaking internet. I consider myself lucky.
Good feedback mate, thanks for watching. Cheers👍😎
That's "Exactly" why we drive them! 😁 (I drove my '28 A Model Roadster P/U as a daily for many years, in fact well over a decade including attending night school over an hour away, yes... in the country, in Winter & no heater 😉) It's just what we do 😎😎 Another great video Terry, I'm slowly getting through your collection & loving them. I should be in the workshop being a Sunday, but it's just too cold today. At least I got my old truck running again yesterday after the big Cooling upgrade (yeah, I did say it's currently cold 🤣) anyway, so sitting here with a beer watching your great content in the warmth & trying not to feel guilty cause once I get my old camping rig done I should be working on a real car like my '34 Chevy Delivery, my '38 dual cab Beer barrel or my dodge speedster, but not working isn't too bad atm. Thanks again!
Sounds like you have some epic projects on the go mate, very cool👍😎
I drive my 71 Pontiac Grand Prix every nice day in the spring ,summer and fall, always road ready and well maintained but once they salt the roads,it’s hibernating time.Such a nice winter on Long Island so we still cruising.
Nice one mate, and I hear ya about salt on the roads, nasty stuff to avoid👍😎
This was a great overview. I have had the same truck [69 d100] since 1989. I love my toyota and the fact I don't have to tinker with it on the week end to get back and forth to work. Will I get rid of my Hot Rod? . Not a chance
And that's the bottom line isn't it mate, you either love the old girls and all the crap you have to deal with enough to own one, or you should stay away because they are not for the feint hearted! Thanks for watching and sharing mate, I sincerely appreciate it.
That was awesome.
Thanks Michael, that is very kind of you to say mate. Cheers👍😎
I just bought a 1970 Jaguar xj6 with a 350 chevy v8... my first car. Overall, the car's in great condition and I did enough research before deciding to buy it. I thought hard about all the cons about owning a classic and still wanted it real bad... but it's too previous to make it my daily driver so I'll buy a cheap used car in a few months and use that most days and keep this for the weekends. Enjoyed your vidd and agree with everything you said. Peace
That’s an awesome first car mate, we’ll done! I’m glad you found some entertainment value here mate, thanks for sharing 👍😎
I love the look of the step side trucks , not interested in the upkeep and other associated downsides , 😉 happy to spend 20 minutes looking at yours though Terry .
I love the look too. You hit the nail on the head mate, if you appreciate the old cars but not the associated upkeep, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying from the sidelines. I love the though of flying, but not the training, time, or cost to get a pilots license. Therefore, I’m happy watching RUclips videos on it to fill that cup of mine. Have a great Weekend mate and keep the shiny side up, cheers😎👍.
What about the emergency brake? I daily drive a 1962 vw bug, with a single circuit master cylinder. I know it won't stop as quickly, but I have trained myself to be ready for brake failure, and I know automatically to pull the E-brake. I actually practice this on empty roads, just to see how it reacts. It stops straight because I adjust my brakes regularly. Do you think this could be ok, versus updating the master cylinder for the time being?
Mate, sounds like you have it sorted. Good option until you can put a dual chamber master cylinder in place. Cheers👍😎
Some of these old classics are death traps... but hey if you're going to die in an old Cadillac or a shitbox Mazda, I know which one I'd chose..... ;)
I hear ya mate, give me the Caddy any day (after all ,many Caddy models look like a hearse anyway😂😂). I do love my death traps though, keep the shiny side up mate😎👍
I’m going to be a mechanic so I could do it just do it little bits at a time
Exactly mate, that’s how it would go about it😎👍
Love the video Terry. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks mate, I appreciate the kind words. You have an awesome RUclips handle BTW😎👍
I’m saving it for when I get another ‘56 🤣🤣
Good stuff mate, no one else can take it off you😎👍
Nice Vid Terry , Love the old girls that V8 rumble is the best, but I love my remote northern fishing sorties more to own one rather work on my old 1HZ 80 and gear for them trips,
I hear ya Craig, certainly the old girls are not for everyone but it’s cool that you can still appreciate them. Enjoy your fishing mate, cheers👍😎
@@JafffaAdventures I will be going for 6 to 8 weeks up the cape in May my 20th trip up there, I just love it north of Weipa camped on the beach there
Nice one Craig, enjoy 👍😎
Enjoyable upload
Thank you mate, that is very kind of you to say😎👍
It always gives me peace to know that there is a hand brake you can use if the hydraulics give up
Indeed mate👍😎
@@JafffaAdventures have a 1984 Suzuki fronte/alto. And yeah it's so true with the screaming engine at 100 kmh. It's an automatic with only 2 forward gears😂
I hear ya on that one Lukas 😂
I get 15 litres / 100km with my 2006 Nissan van with a 3.5l V6 :/ may as well go a v8
Indeed👍😎
depends if it's on historic club plates or not . log book etc .. once a week / weekender runs .
great video well done!
Thanks Brent, I appreciate the kind words cheers.😎👍
All full open rego here👍😎
Maybe one day I'll have an A9X in the driveway. That's my dream play car
That’s a great looking car mate, one of my favourite Aussie rides. Keep the dream alive😎👍
Thats beautiful I love it. You should take it down to Canberra next January for the Summernats, I've just returned from there. Another reason not to daily a classic is that you can put them on club rego and save a fortune on rego costs. In fact you could have 5 or 6 classic cars for the price of 1 car on normal full rego. Each state is different so check your states regulations. It costs me $50 per year to be a club member $30 per year for paperwork validation and $46 per year for registration cost. If you have multiple cars then you can divide the club membership up per car which will bring the cost per car down. I have a friend with 2 cars and a motorbike on club rego. Keep up the great work I love your videos.
Thanks for the kind words mate, I sincerely appreciate it. The downside of club rego in Qld is that you can only drive a 15km radius from your home unless you are going to a sanctioned event or for repairs. It’s a very enticing proposition however, the costs you outlined are a serious consideration. Have a great week mate 😎👍
That's a bugger here in NSW we have a log book and get 60 days use per year. We also get 1 day per week maintenance run which we're limited to 50 ks I think from home which don't come off our logbook days. Plus club runs which also don't come off logbook.
That’s a better system than Qld. Enjoy your ride mate, cheers😎👍
Here in California registration is the same. Many of my friends have collector car insurance because it is so cheap. I don't like the restrictions (miles, events only, locked garage, etc). I pay regular insurance so I can drive anywhere anytime. I drive my '53 Packard Clipper DeLuxe somewhere each week, plus of course on club outings at least every month. It makes me happy.
Nice one William
You sound like you're trying to talk people out of old cars, but then you get to confessing that you love them. I don't drive mine daily, but I take it out weekly for an errand or just a joy ride, plus of course montly club outings. My '53 Packard Clipper DeLuxe is quieter and more comfortable than a pickup. With overdrive, it will easily keep up with modern freeway traffic. Without power steering, though, I don't parallel park. Keep on having fun.
Thanks mate, definitely not talking people of of them, just know what you are getting into first because they ARE NOT for everyone 👍😎
I daily drove my '69 Camaro, black paint, black interior, no A/C in South Texas for about a year and a half. I love the car but it was the most miserable experience of my life.
That’s very cool Kenny, you know exactly what I’m talking about in my video. Thanks for sharing mate, I sincerely appreciate it 👍😎
I had to laugh . Classic cars are tough
They are indeed, you really need to LOVE them to put up with what they throw at you😎👍
@@JafffaAdventures I should have also mentioned that I fixed up my 1980 International Scout II Diesel last year and installed a new A/C system so I could drive it all summer. It meets every criteria of inconvenience of any other classic but it is awesome to drive (as long as you don't need to go anywhere faster than 65mph) because you don't get soaked with sweat. I may install A/C on the Camaro but it didn't have it originally and its a numbers matching big block so I am hesitant.
I hear ya Kenny, if it were me I’d leave the Camaro as is, numbers matching are getting harder to find. Cheers
Ah nothing matters if you got determination and not be afraid to get your hands dirty money yes can be definitely a walk away but i daily drive a 69 c10 and its the best experience I’ve ever had in my life
I agree with that 💯 Nathan. It’s a great feeling. Thanks for watching and commenting mate 👍😎
@@JafffaAdventures no problem man love your content your honesty and reasoning is all justifiable and easy to understand keep up the great content man!! 😁
Thanks Nathan, it will do my best mate, cheers👍😎
I've always wanted an old Chrysler Valiant charger
Great car mate, I love them too. Good to see you are back in the saddle, keep the shiny side up😎👍
Great video mate. I wondering if you could do a video on your hot shower setup on your landcruiser what heat ex-changer and where you hooked it up? I recon it sounds unreal.
Thanks for the kind words mate, I sincerely appreciate it. The video on the shower is already done and In my library. It’s part of a broader video on the topic of water called “How to Store Water in your 4WD for Camping | Carrying | Using | Refilling Solutions”. Cheers Daniel.
