Picked up a 1999 Tacoma sr5 from Georgia. 5 speed, 125 thousand miles , No rust, solid frame for $2000. Put on new tires , alignment and some serious cleaning, waxing. Gets comments everywhere I drive it here in Michigan. Now my dive truck for summer. Never gets rain or snow on it ! Love it !! Incredibly dependable. Seriously the last vehicle I ever own !
There is a lot more engineering in a Toyota 4x4 than just the engine. The entire design of the vehicle is all still Toyota. Same wheel base, same suspension geometry, same everything, except with more power. Whooptie doo.
@@JohnnyChimpo907 once you quadruple the horse power and put a huge lift and tires you basically have to reengineer the whole suspention too otherwise you'll run into problems. so the whole drivetrain and how it rides and handles aren't toyota anymore. now your asically left with the body and frame as the only toyota shit left!

A spirited man like your self is more that ready to take on a project like that, and I’ve no doubt your short films will inspire other people to take on big projects too

Bought my ‘94 80 series as a lease return in ‘97 here in LA. Joined a newsgroup out of Australia while I was doing research and over the next 10 years learned almost everything there is to know about 80 series from this group. Then in 2011 I was brought down to Sydney to work on a film. The newsgroup was pretty much dormant as they had mostly moved to 100 series. I sent an email and they all chimed in, set up a reunion and took me on a short trip to the Wattigans. Great to meet them after all those years. Still have my 80 series.
The thing you need the most from that TLC specs is the anti rust coating on the chassis, which is powder coating. Then maybe the full floating axle and some minor mods for driving comfort. You could do it slowly. You almost certainly dont need the ls3 engine swap, the locking diffs are a waste if you dont go offroad often. Sound proofing, you can do it yourself. Haha. Bigger fuel tank, you can always bring a few jerry cans with you.

Hey Van, so after I saw your video 2 years ago I've been grinding my teeth trying to convince myself it's a very bad idea to get a truck like this. Now I'm happy to announce I'm a proud owner of a 1998 4runner... Just about to dump a few thousand on repairs and then probably the rest of my time and money into 'restoring' it. Was on the TLC tip years ago, 10 years ago, completely obsessed with FJ 55's and FJ 60's - searched the internet for days on end for unicorns - dreamt of an off-frame restoration, put it aside, and just this year bought a 1995 RRC because the heart wants what the heart wants and I finally had the money
I love Toyota SUV's. We've owned several over the years - have one right now, in fact. And I, too, have drooled over Jonathan Ward's creations. So this video hit me on several points. Very nicely done.

Dad had a 60 series Sahara growing up as a kid, I still remember the brown interior and smell of it. Dad drove me around the block on he’s lap and let me help him steer what I thought to be a monster truck (I was 4 years old). I’d get driven to and from school in it and we went on many small adventures. I remember standing next to the wheels and they were as big as me! It blew a head gasket one day and sat in our front yard for years til a younger guy offered to buy it. We had bought a tarago in the meantime so we didn’t need it. He sold it to the young guy and it got towed away… I’m 21 now and have been reminiscing on the old girl. This year I decided to buy an 80 series diesel LandCruiser and have spent all my savings fixing it up! I don’t really care about money at this point, I’m going to drive it up and down the east coast of Australia and enjoy the hell out of it. I’ve already had some memorable moments with it and It’s so awesome to own one of these… I truly enjoy it every time I turn the key. They are awesome trucks and I can’t wait to keep it for many years and hopefully try my luck with a 60 series one day! Like father like son. Let the adventure begin!
The spirit of this video is felt where I live and work in Bali, where old Land Cruisers, Daihatsu Taft (Rocky) and Suzuki Jimny (Samurai, Katana) never die; parts are readily available; and mechanics do good work even if under the shade of some trees. My own daily driver is a 1988 Suzuki Katana (Jimny) that is mechanically fully restored but with some “patina” on the body. I will probably never sell it. Thanks for this video.
I had a Samurai. I loved driving it so much but the soft top leaked in the rain and the carburetor wouldn't stop having problems even after a rebuild. I eventually got tired of the cost of constant repairs so I had to sell it. I hope I can drive a Samurai again some day.
Holy Shit Van. You know Buck? I literally just got off the lawnmower after listening to him for over an hour. Seeing you two together makes perfect sense to me. The world is way too small.
Hey, man, I watched this video like two years ago when I was 17 and finishing school. Back then, I had a hard time to choose a profession. I watched this video and started vocational training to be a car mechanic. Now I am finishing my studies and am about to specialize in old cars. Thanks for the tip.
My dad had an early 90s Toyota 2D pickup and I loved that truck so much in my adolescence. I honestly wish we still had it (I love Toyota). Sometimes, making financial decisions that give us jubilance and happiness can't be rationalized, but that's not necessarily always a bad thing. Btw, I really liked the editing in this video, awesome content!
Ive been dreaming about a 60 series. Which led me to this video, which led me to this channel. So happy i found this channel. I feel like it nourishes this spirited man. It also hasn’t dulled my lust for a 60 series.
I learned to drive in a Toyota Landcruiser 1980 (60 series) turbo diesel. That vehicle was a lot of fun. I think it got sold in 1997 with over 2 million km on the clock. Thankyou for the beautiful memories.
I've loved my 80 from the day I could drive it and this tribute is delightful. Thanks Van! p.s. the Corvette engine situation is really nice. Can be done under $15k with the right tools and time.
I purchased a silver '87 FJ60 last September and this video is the dopest thing I've seen in a loooooong time hahaha. There's no more good old cruiser content!!
I know, unlike other people who jump from one materialistic desire to another, this simple man would cherish his TLC forever. That's something worth acquiring.
Feel the same about my K1500. Curbing my desire to blow money on it is so difficult considering how easy it is to source new parts for it. Especially the interior. I have redone so much of it. Thanks for the vid. Love it.
I used to drive a Land cruiser same year. Loved the honks on Sunset Blvd and riding several friends to clubs in that thing, or coming over this hilly pass to visit my cousin. Those were good times.
I had an FJ40 in college (named Lola, as college students are inclined to give names to the objects of their love. Lola Granola.) The love was real, but she was tempestuous, as young love often is. Now an unnamed yet faithful and true FJ Cruiser. Landcruiser love is real. Hold the one you have.
So amazing. Me and my brother own a 1962 FJ40 that my grandfather bought brand new of the toyota lot! Also drive a 7.3 powerstroke.. The spirited man loves his vehicles and treats them as part of the family.
When i was maybe 14 I saw an old beat down, diamond plated fj40 on Marthas Vinyard during a fishing trip. It changed my life. Once I was out of school and had the finances, i bought myself a silver 1987 fj60 and drove it daily for over 10 years. Looks just like the one in this vid but it runs on gas, lots of it. This is a 1987 truck with a 4.2 L straight six that redlines at.......4000 rpm. 4 speed manual transmission with NO OVERDRIVE. It has a pull choke like a pushmower. The suspension would fit right in on the Oregon trail. There is a small hole in the body below the radiator meant for an emergency hand crank for starting the engine by hand if your battery dies, although there has never been a documented case of someone actually starting one that way. Dont leave your millennial or younger kids in there on a hot day cus they wont know how to work the windows. The beauty of these things is in their simplicity. Your senses arent dulled by horespower and all sorts of technology. That allows you to hear the truck whispering to you when something is failing. And because its a landcruiser you can usually put the repair off for 10k miles because sometimes you really are in Botswana, 4 days drive from the nearest electricity. A point not lost on organizations such as the UN, doctors without borders, and basically every military in the world. Jonathan ward makes amazing trucks and i would certainly be proud to own one. But they are not landcruisers. If you want a landcruiser with a v8 go buy yourself the best 100 series you can find, preferably 05-07, preferably without AHC. Probably cost you 25k. As the owner of an 06 i can honestly tell you its soul is every bit a cruiser in spite of the creature comforts. My 80 with factory e lockers had the best 4wd system out of any model cruiser, but the 100 is the best all around landcruiser in my opinion. Get one and save yourself 200k and the 2 years of your life you would waste waiting for the tlc to be built.
I’m 21 years old and own a HJ45 1975 Land Cruiser since i was 13, probably the best thing that has ever happened to me, will never get rid of it, i just LOVE IT
This particular Spirited Man has a personal journey to leave the slavery of the bits, and return to the analog, to the tangible ... to the real. Like when things were not instantaneous and everything had its times and processes. And if this road is full of spare parts, it is a price that I am willing to pay. Thank you Van for waking up my iner Spirited Man.
Thanks for such great content, delivered with your own sense of style. I can relate to your 'mindless' passion... rebuilt a beat up 1966 FJ45 Landcruiser Ute to beach hop up the Eastern Seaboard of Australia... was a money pit and you never knew if you'd get there but was a best vehicle I've ever had. Call me crazy but I'm seriously thinking of getting a Troopcarrier camper, maybe to try to relive my mid-twenties again!
Rarely have I wished so sincerely that a youtuber got his wish somehow. This channel is just so amazing. You'll be able to buy this car one day, I'm sure.
Van - I can really relate to this video. I still drive an '87 FJ60 that I was able to purchase new - my first new vehicle. With close to 300,000 miles, it's showing it's age, but is still my daily driver. Like yourself I would love to have it rebuilt, but still plan to restore it myself - I'd prefer to keep it reasonably stock. Though I finally broke-down and purchased another vehicle, I just can't part with my FJ. I had the good fortune of owning a '78 FJ40 - sadly it met it's demise in a wreck after only 4 years of my ownership. Thanks again and good luck with your adventure!
I love stories like this. After i bought my 87 fj60 in 2004, i purchased a used arb bull bar from a guy in Bangor, ME. He was a career air force pilot. He drove a blue 1984 fj60 he said he bought used in 85 or 86. You dont meet many people that drive the same car for 20 years. Or cars that drive for 20 years period. The only reason he sold me the bar was that the truck rusted out from underneath it. Bravo sir. They have made more complicated and expensive cars since you bought you 60, but they have not made a better one.

I truely hope he gets the rig.
Ive been dreaming about a 60 series. Which led me to this video, which led me to this channel.
So happy i found this channel.
I feel like it nourishes this spirited man.
It also hasn’t dulled my lust for a 60 series.
Definitely got reposted, glad to see the OG Landcruiser still up and at it.
I noticed that. Didn’t see the original though. What’s different ?
I learned to drive in a Toyota Landcruiser 1980 (60 series) turbo diesel. That vehicle was a lot of fun. I think it got sold in 1997 with over 2 million km on the clock. Thankyou for the beautiful memories.
those landcruiser are just going insane in prices... so that's a win win for who love them like you do...
Bizarre channel. Love it. The author's singular personality percolates the whole thing.
How in the world does he make these videos. Seems like magic ✨
blue magic
Because this Spirited Man is a excellent story teller.
This video is a piece of art! The music the sounds, the cinematic all of it 🤤
I know, unlike other people who jump from one materialistic desire to another, this simple man would cherish his TLC forever. That's something worth acquiring.
Your videos give me such a comfort feeling
"Or wipes its down with a diaper" I laughed harder than I should of at that
Hey Van! Your videos are the BEST thing on RUclips. Thank you for making, sharing, creating.
Feel the same about my K1500. Curbing my desire to blow money on it is so difficult considering how easy it is to source new parts for it. Especially the interior. I have redone so much of it. Thanks for the vid. Love it.
Which year?
69 GMC K2500, it's HAD me, 28yrs.
The Neistat brothers make the best content on RUclips. Very few people that I've watched fall closely behind. God I love this channel.
I have a 78 FJ40. Rebuilt the transmission 2-3 years ago. Rebuilding the engine now. Definitely a labor of love.
I understand this particular spirited man's desires for that "one vehicle to rule them all".
And there was me thinking you hadn't got the materialism bug! You like Old you brother New....... I love watching people who do. Love the channel.
When I notice myself feeling this way I start to wonder what I’m avoiding.
ups on this!
"A Corvette engine. A Corvette engine?" LMAO
LS swap
yeah its a chevrolet LS engine used in the corvette. What about it?
@@cullenwilliams1695 It was funny the way he said it.
It's like he's living in the 60s but it's actually just a month ago
we just love your videos man - please never stop making them.
I have the same level of love for the older generation of ThinkPads.
+1
Great voice , content, ability to tell a story. Not sure how this popped up but glad it did. Subscribed.
This video made me homesick thinking of my 1989 HJ61 White Lightning sitting back at home in Australia.
Did this get reuploaded? I just watched it this afternoon...
probably he had to clip something out.
Yeah the original showed his home address on one of the receipts
@@elizabethemberley8112 how did you see that?🙂😀

This video speaks to me on another level. And how I feel about my 1993 Mitsubishi Montero. Drive what makes you happy. Bravo video sir.
It is a good idea with the Troopy, this makes us younger, greetings from a 78 Troopy from Germany.
Rarely have I wished so sincerely that a youtuber got his wish somehow. This channel is just so amazing. You'll be able to buy this car one day, I'm sure.
I love how you just attached your shrine to a public pole (electrical?) like of course. Why not?😆👍
Manifest🙏🌱
Your videos are very calming. Simply satisfying
"If you don't know what to do with your life, PLEASE, become an old car mechanic" - Van :)
Those words are spinning around my head now
My dad is an old car mechanic 😩 he doesn’t know what to do with modern engines….. pitty he too is now very very old 😢
Van - I can really relate to this video.
Wow! Amazing video!
