I recently bought the same receiver, also an open box at BB, and also about half price! I, too, am using a laptop cooler; however, you'll likely find that the cooler is sucking air in through the top and spitting it out the sides. Flipping it over will suck air out of the top of the receiver. Mine is also in a closed cabinet, and I'll be cutting a hole and adding an exhaust fan in the back (although my HTR-4065 never had an issue for the eight years it was in there with *no* aux cooling. For cable/wire identification, I use labels made on my Brother labelmaker, and wrap those into "flags" at the end. Power cords, HDMI cables, and the like get them stuck on the top of the connector when they'll fit. Enjoy your new toy! I bought mine so I could move to a 5.1.2 setup, and I'm enjoying the new Atmos experience.

@@ToddTinkersWithTech I ended up having to upgrade my HDMI cables, too. My problem was intermittent audio dropouts (even though the cables were "8K certified"). Also, something I forgot to mention: One nice thing about my label-maker tags is that they will not snag like hard ones can as you are moving cables around, trying to pull them out, etc.

Like @ashemoski said, you should turn the laptop fan upside down, so it can suck the hot air out of the receiver. It makes sense, because laptops usually sit on the fan and the hot air comes out at the bottom. I'm also using a laptop fan for a pre/pro and it does its job relatively well.
I've had this receiver since release. Even sent it in when they offered the free 8k hardware upgrade. Appreciate the support from Yamaha. I will say though, their last OTA update ruined a good thing for me. Things had been working FLAWLESSLY but for whatever reason, their recent update made eARC go buggy out of nowhere - I've had to drop back to standard ARC. I might need to look into how to roll back the update.
When updates occur, sometimes one might have to reestablish the connection! Depending on the source, those connections may take a while to reestablish themselves. If you don't have a source that's able to reconfigure the connection (i.e., streaming boxes, Blu-ray players, etc) then personally I would leave the HDMI cable plugged in for 24 hours before making alternative arrangements.
I've run to a HDMI cable that was bad but I didn't know it until I connected it to a different port on my TV. My Blu-ray player would randomly drop out only on that port until I replaced the cable but not on other ports.

When it comes to the HDMI cable I think you need a HDMI cable that acts like ethernet as you need data traffic to go back and forth instead of one way like older HDMI cables do.
Ah that is a great idea to use the USB to power an exhaust fan in the cabinet! Yeah the back of my cabinet has large holes in it for hot air to escape as well. The laptop fan just gives me piece of mind more than anything! I appreciate the comment! ✌
I just upgraded my tv from Plasma to OLED and my Yamaha receiver doesn’t pass through 4K. It has HDMI 2.0 whereas I now need HDMI 2.2 and new cables. I did spend a day ready to throw everything out. Frustrating as heck! Looking at the same Yamaha receiver you have.
I almost think optical out of your TV to receiver would save you the $$ and hassle, but you'd lose eARC control. That's what I was using on my previous non- HDMI Kenwood THX receiver. Kinda wish I had just bought a used high end non HDMI receiver to replace it and stuck with optical... Good luck with your new OLED! ✌️
HDMI has been annoying me from the day it was introduced. Cables and devices can all contribute to communication failure. You have to trust that the manufacturers properly support the (ever evolving) HDMI version that they claim. I have a TV and powered speakers that require me to occasionally re-plug the HDMI cable to the eARC port on the TV no matter which HDMI cables I use to force the two devices to handshake again. I could probably achieve the same with a full power cycle, but I like leaving the speakers in standby for music. I would never run expensive equipment in an enclosed cabinet. I've always used open racks - Sanus for example.
I have a huge AVR in one compartment, and I have two matching high-performance power amps in the other. Never had a problem with overheating (well, not no more anyway) And to think I'm running 4 ohm speakers at an 87 DB sensitivity, too Where there's a will, there's a way.
Yeah was using old school optical out of my TV into my old school non HDMI receiver, and it was simple and just worked. eARC throws a wrench into everything... Firmware updates cause issues with handshake as well. eARC is great in concept but very finicky! I appreciate the comment! ✌️

I use a computer fan on top of my receivers. what a difference it makes. give me air flow or give me death said the receiver

Yeah as long as heat can escape and not build up. But Onkyo receivers in particular seem to have heat related failure... I appreciate the comment! ✌️
