Subway or monorail? Heavy rail supporters crash presentation in Sherman Oaks

  • Plans to connect the San Fernando Valley with Westside Los Angeles via public transportation and provide new options to underserved areas along the way continue to be contentious for supporters of dueling methods of transit.
    The Sepulveda Transit Corridor project will connect the Valley to the Westside by navigating the natural barrier of the Santa Monica Mountains. LA Metro wants to connect the two regions by railway by either tunneling underground or following roughly the same path as the 405 Freeway.
    Six options are on the table, with each varying in total cost, transit time, amount and location of stops along the route, and whether the vehicles are automated or operated by a driver.
    KTLA's John Fenoglio reports on Jan. 4, 2024.

      @@user-de1hg8cf6bthere is very little evidence that a monorail is necessarily faster to build than heavy rail. Also there are other factors to consider, like speed, capacity, and connectivity, which the monorail proposal falls short of. The fact that they are trying to push for options that don't have a direct UCLA station, which is projected to be one of the highest ridership stations on the west coast, should be a major red flag (it has been found that once the tunnel to UCLA is factored in, the monorail is likely to be as or even more expensive than the heavy rail!)

    • @mrxman581
      @mrxman581 4 месяца назад +15

      @user-de1hg8cf6b Yes, a monorail could be built faster, but the system wouldn't be as efficient. For example, it couldn't include an underground station at the center of the UCLA campus.
      Another issue is that it wouldn't connect as efficiently to the new D Line subway currently under construction that will have underground stations at Westwood Village(about a mile South of UCLA) and the VA campus (West of the 405). The D Line is a heavy rail subway line. Having another heavy rail subway line to serve the Sepulveda Pass would integrate and connect much better underground with the D Line. It would also use the same type of trainsets saving costs and maintenance.
      A monorail would introduce a whole new additional type of trainsets not used anywhere else on the LA Metro system.

That one resident was right - you need a transit mode that is well connected to other existing transit AND that can move the most people, most quickly, often. Heavy rail can do that monorail can’t. They “crashed” the presentation. Such a weird way to title this video. Definitely shows where the bias is. As residents we have the right to sit in on these meetings and provide our input. Subway is the better option without a doubt. More passenger capacity, faster, better locations for stops (especially a stop directly on UCLA's campus) and will be virtually invisible except for the stations. During construction a subway will cause no delays on the 405 and will only affect areas around the stations, when finished, a subway will not leave a blight on the scenery, not make as much noise as an aerial monorail, and be more convenient for everyone along the corridor. There's also no guarantee that the budget of the monorail will not balloon and be as expensive as subway because of all the complication of construction along the 405. There is just ZERO reason to construct a monorail! HEAVY RAIL MUST BE BUILT!!!

Not to mention the crapload of traffic that will develop in Tarzana and the PCH in the Palisades. Then they will still have to drive east through Santa Monica to get anywhere where there are jobs and homes. Having a subway will be so much more efficient to get people between the Valley and the Westside AND connect people to places they need to go WITHOUT the need for a car.

BYD is notorious for over promising and under delivering after heavy lobbying. Besides, it’s not worth it to do it cheaply if it’s not done right! Their ridership numbers don’t hold up compared to heavy rail in the slightest, and that budget/yielded ridership difference shrinks up really quickly when the necessary UCLA connection is taken into account. Build the heavy rail!!!

    I’m from Bangkok. We just got 2 new train routes using the monorail and I gotta say no more monorail. Recently there’s a news talking about conductor rails and train tire falling off and hit the street, no safety at all compared to heavy rail. The train is also small and shaky.

  • @mrxman581
    @mrxman581 4 месяца назад +11

    Yes, a monorail could be built faster, but the system wouldn't be as efficient.

    “It will be built faster”. I heard the exactly same thing when São Paulo Metro decided to build monorail instead of heavy rail on some lines. The result:
    The Line 15 was built, but it has problems constantly.
    The Line 14 has being in construction for the last 10 years and we still haven’t a clear ending date.
    Subway is better, will carry more people and the construction method is proven.

      The largest metropolitan area in the US (LA) has had the largest transit construction program in the US for over 30 years already. So you can’t say that they haven’t built a train since they’ve already laid over 109 miles of track and opened 101 stations since 1990, not including the 500 miles of track and 62 stations that Metrolink covers.

    You can hire a bunch of engineers and make them reinvent transit again and again, eventually they'll end up with a metro/train because it's almost always the most efficient way of moving lots of people and lots of stuff.

    My main issue is the placement of it on the freeway thus why it's cheaper but it won't directly connect to UCLA, UCLA Hospital, Westwood wilshire, and purple line being built. You'll need to get on a bus or build a people mover adding more time, money, inconvenienc to rider. The monorail could ģo underground when it gets to UCLA but then gets expensive adding that thus not a much cheaper option. So just do it right the first time

    We used to plan a monorail for Jakarta, however it was abandoned due to it's complexity. Now we have an LRT system since August 2023 from Dukuh Atas branching into Jatimulya and Harjamukti. The LRT was chosen because of it's simpler switching system, easy maintenance and a higher capacity than the monorail. Also, the trainsets are homemade, something that's impossible if it's a monorail.

      yes & no. so you need lines that connect neighborhoods together, and they don't always have to be near major sites, these minor lines make it easier to get to the major lines. Yes, I do agree a whole line that is on a freeway can be bad, but if not used correctly. I still need to see the plans of this, but if it connects with some of the rail lines and major bus lines, then it is a win. If it does not, it is a loss. Also, I am not 100% on monorail. I can not give an honest opinion on it bc I have not done enough hw on it. But if people want more people, maybe longer trains or slightly bigger train carts. I don't wanna say 100% no on this idea, but I think it can help but isn't totally dead, can be an idea to add on to our goals for transportation.

    Say it with me people, "Just build a train!" 🚈
    Any propose "benefits" that a monorail has (not really) has over conventional, steel wheel trains is automatically negated with modern railways.
    Not only can conventional railway tracks run at grade, underground, and elevated with ease, but it can easily change tracks and the trains and wheels are standardize to an extent, is energy efficient, and can be easily integrated with existing railway infrastructure.
    These gadgetbahn proposals (monorails, maglev, PRT and weird airport people movers) all try to reinvent the train and end up falling flat. Don't waste your time and money trying to reinvent the train, just build a train. You can design the train to look as snazzy and futuristic as you like, I don't care, as long as it's a steel-wheeled train.
    If absolutely needed, to climb steeper grades, Linear Induction Motor (LIM) powered trains similar to the Vancouver SkyTrain in BC, Canada, and other metro lines in Japan and China can climb steeper grades, while retaining the benefits of conventional, steel wheeled trains.

    Only 24k passengers an hour? For real?! Come on, there is no way in hell they thought that'd work out well in any way. And max of 60mph? Also really weird and low. The only way this would be able to work well and make sense is if they run a LOAD of trains on the line both directions, circulating them every day. I'm talking at least a solid train per every 4 miles of track 24/7. For use to LAX, it'd need way more than that. True rail (Heavy Rail) is by fair the best solution. Much higher capacity trains, much higher speeds able to be achieved and at better frequencies/headways. The knowledge and tech is far cheaper and easier to accommodate here in the US as well. US Transit Agencies NEVER ever make sense, or want what is best for the short and long term. Oh yeah, and not connecting to other modes of mass transit is beyond illogical and an insult to those who use transit.
