What's good:
The camera gets the new UI from XZ3
Speakers feel louder at maximum volume
Performance is the same as Oreo
What's not cool:
No gestures!!
No improvement in camera quality
Battery backup isn't good (heavy battery drain while the phone is in standby)

No double tap to wake
Apart from new icons dropdown notification panel (which you may like or not) and vertical animations, nothing is new with the UI, feels pretty much like Oreo

I sold my XZ Premium and bought Huawei Mate 20 pro from Optus, and my second phone is S9+ couldn't be happier, I had the update before you and bastards actually went through the effort to remove features from XZ Premium's pie build like Blue light filter, double tap to wake and there is no side sense no new wallpapers, After years and years of being a Sony fanboy and loyalty I say Fu** you Sony and goodbye because you have no respect for your customers.

Well, I happen to like the 9.0 update because I finally have a way to lock the screen on a phone to landscape and this video missed that new feature.

Sir, I purchased Sony Xperia XZ Premium mobile phone in October 2018. In November 2018, I was opted by Sony to upgrade version 8.0 to version 9.0 (Pie). After up-gradation, Its "4K HDR performance" totally vanished. Now I am writing letters to MD Sony India and Chairman Sony Japan but they are not replacing my mobile phone.

Actually the version 47.2.A.10.107 looks like a new looking Sony and the camera is better in my opinion because it reduces the blurred on the camera.

Hey, bro! I'm not trying to annoy you with these comments, but I've been watching the rest of this video, and you mentioned that Sony didn't change the image quality of the camera? I don't find anything wrong with the image quality, and you also mentioned about the lowlight photos being bad? I've taken loads of lowlight photos with my XZ Premium since the Pie update and the lowlight photos have turned out great for me! But if at any time I wanna brighten up dark areas a little, I just edit the picture.
I am happy to get a wider field of view for slo mo. I didn't like how cropped it was, though I think they should've used different labels than resolution for that.
4k HDR on RUclips hasn't been working on any phone soon after they gave that ability since RUclips would be very laggy with asynchronous sound. Really bummed about the Amazon situation as I was watching Jack Ryan and it looked fantastic.
I agree. Battery was terrible after pie but after 2 weeks of having it now, it lasts as long and I've noticed it charges significantly faster from 0-30%. Also the rest of the camera features should've been there but they did add an option where you could toggle "image quality" over "correction for distortion". I haven't seen much improvement but I haven't tested it out fully yet either. It sucks about the themes because thats a fantastic option Android has as well as double tap to wake. Seems you are frustrated with SONY and rightfully so. My experience with Pie has been quite fast and infact apps open a bit quicker. The problem right now is a lack of other apps supporting Pie properly.
Yeah bro, you could actually see the difference when it switched from 1080p to Ultra HD :D Fingers crossed for Prime Video, although I highly doubt Amazon will update the app only for Xperia users, they usually focus more on iPhones and not to mention there is no other phone in the market with a 4K display.
Frustrated? Nope, but highly disappointed, XZ Premium has been by far the worst treated phone by Sony when it comes to updates, tons of bugs and issues, I've owned every Sony Xperia flagship phone since the very first X10, back in the good old days Sony would go out of the line and gave us quality updates, I remember how X10 got updated to Gingerbread and it was FANTASTIC, the Z Ultra to Lollipop, Z3 to Marshmallow, every time you'd update an old phone you got to see new UI from the latest Xperia phones and there were so many new features. But now that isn't the case.

Tech Guy Charlie thanks for the insight. It's true, though also back then more noticeable features of Android were added with updates. There isn't any difference with 8 and 9 apart from the navigation bar. Even in the pie beta SONY didn't like it since it wasn't available on XZ2 even.
Knowing its the same sensor, a lot of things could've made the camera better with an update but that's business. It sucks. For now though, my phone in 2017 still gives me all the same good stuff and I still take really detailed macro shots and accurate colours. I'll be holding on to this phone for a few more years until mid rangers catch up because I still really enjoy the headphone jack

a smartphone is a computer it is outrageous that phone makers do not update completely the Os version (the xz premium pie does not have the new UI) it is as if your PC bought with windows 7 did not let you update to windows8. is there a phone maker other than google that always upgrades to the latest OS version ? i'm done with sony ( i only bought it because it is the only phone with 4k screen i use with a cardboard style VR headset)
Dude, the sad part is the Galaxy S8 is going to get a completely new UI which will be same as S9 and Note 9 with Android Pie, Pixels also get full Android builds, so does OnePlus and every other brand, and here is Sony stripping out even the inbuilt features from Pie, did you see how the old Z3 Compact has more features like double tap to wake, small apps and full system-wide themes but the XZ Premium don't. I'm also done with Sony.

The Android 9.0 update lets you lock the screen to landscape and I like that so much I can live with the crappy stuff I've seen like the Bluetooth menu.

I don't know man! It just does not. I've reinstalled the app, cleared cache and finally a factory reset, it just does not work, always plays back 1080p. It used to work fine on Oreo and Nougat.

Hey Jerry, I don't think amazon will fix it. I mean, why would they spend time and energy on fixing something that a tiny miniscule number of people use? They'd be more bothered if this sort of problem was on iPhone. So unless there is a way to downgrade the phone back to Oreo or Nougat no more 4k on prime video for us Xperia users 😔

I just bought my Xz premium and came with Oreo, still have no the Night light mode but I got an update, I think it might come with that option, and thank to you I will keep Oreo only for the Camera quality, I like the new camera app but if battery drain faster and quality images are same, isn't worth to upgrade to 9. !!
If it was better quality in 9 I would upgrade no matter the battery drain but, still same quality so we don't get any good upgrades. Thanks again !

May I ask what size is the UI in your phone? Mine was on default size, also font default, and the top toggle bar only showed 2 rows of toggle options even when pulled down, and I see you have 3 rows. I now set it to small to get 3, this update is a bit of a nightmare. Also have you noticed Netflix is 720 p only now on Xperia Xz premium? It actually changed mid year before the update, Netflix no longer supports 1080p or higher on Xperia Xz premium.

Don't update it! Stay on Oreo, its the best for XZ Premium, look at the comments on Sony's own forums, many people having issues. Maybe wait until bugs are sorted.

Night Mode can be found in the developer options.. Has an auto feature based on time of day as well..

I agree. I love the old Oreo system better than Pie on this device. I experience several sitbacks on Pie like; i now cannot connect my previously cast-connected TV, my maps on waze and google sometimes gone crazy, i now need to restart everytime i use GPS, etc. Is there any chance to downgrade to Oreo?
Yes, you can!! I made a guide on how to do it, but when you do a downgrade, all your data will be lost, so just take a backup! my phone is working fine now after downgrading to Oreo.

Biggest upset and problem with Android 9 on Sony XZ Premium is, the Call recording feature vanishing from Truecaller, thus making the Truecaller Premium membership of no value. There is no way to enable it, unless as described on the Internet, I will have to root the phone and use some other app for only that feature.
So sorry man! :( I feel you, a lot of features are missing/incomplete from Pie build.

Actually at this point I was in many regards happier with the XZP compared to the mate 20 pro - I would say it's probably worth waiting to switch till next year for the average consumer.
To be honest, I also love XZP! Just don't like the way Sony is treating it with the updates, otherwise, bugs and missing features apart, it's a fantastic phone.

I just bought my XZ Premium last week in Black Friday sale £229 (it was £650 when it was released last year and most of 2017). I needed a new phone and thought it's worth £229 until Samsung gets its act together and releases a phone without a camera cut-out, might have to wait till 2021 for that... 😩
Hey, Zoltan, £229 is great for XZ Premium, considering in my country deep-sea black is listed as £500 on Amazon!! Bloody ridiculous pricing. But, Samsung does not have a cutout for the camera, neither their phones have a notch!!

^^ True! at that price, I'd recommend XZ Premium over Chinese phones anyway! £250 is a CRAZY good deal for XZ Premium, considering its got a 4K display.

I was going to buy the XZ Premium, now I'm glad I bought the Pixel 2 XL instead. Although they have basically the same specs, I'm sad to see Sony doesn't update everything on their old phones :/
Pixel 2 XL is a great phone! especially the camera of Pixels always outperforms Xperia's at night You also have the advantage of quick and FULL software updates.

I just got an s8 to replace my z5 premium, I never thought I'd say it but Samsung's doing way better than Sony now a days. Both the last Sony phones I had broke the exact same way, the backs just fell off one day

They fr removed my fav feature; the customisability of the system UI (yeah, including the cute spinning settings gear you used to activate it) was totally removed unless you use Nox as your homescreen because it allows you to access it, which I luckily had already. They never got rid of force-peeking on apps, but the fact that you can customise DND and just use that to stop peeking is a workaround. Inconvenient workaround seeing as I now need TWO different customisations of DND but eh... The auto rotate bit is good though. I'd like the media button to be something you can move back to the top or the left, especially because Sony markets it's phones in a way that screams "HEY! WE SUPPORT REMOTE PLAY!!!". You'd think they'd give you a way to get rid of the popup entirely at times, even, but clearly not? I'm pretty much losing faith in Sony at this point, they don't seem to care what their customers want and oh BOY the amount of faults they get with ports. It's clear with PlayStation 4 and clear with the recent Xperias. My favourite Xperia remains the T 😴
When i used android 8, i changed resolution size nearly 4k all time and its ok everything, but now i already updated my phone to android pie its not normal. When i screen shot its not full size, some area are black. Saddd

Sir, because Sony is selling 'rubbish material' mobile phones in India. One should never upgrade 8.0 version to 9.0 (Pie) version. This version will damage your phone.

I use the XZ Premium, and I got the Android 9 Pie update. A week later, I got the software update again. And, you know what? I can't belive this, I got the super slow motion 960fps in Full HD. 960fps in full hd resolution for XZ Premium😍. So, I don't need to upgrade to XZ2 series.😂
Does the night light mod you used for Oreo work in Pie too? I used to use it a lot but now I just an app. I didn't quite get if it the same method works
Nope, that is the thing.. Pie blocks the installation, I checked out some forums on xda, right now seems like the only way to install night light is to root the phone. :(

I can be a Sony fanboy and go on and on praising the Pie update and the company itself but that will be deception and will be misleading to my subscribers, I have to tell what's good and bad and moreover its not like the phone was cheap, it was almost 60,000 INR after just 1 year 4 months its already being treated like an outdated device even though it has got such a powerful hardware. I guess their main focus is on XZ3.
And it's not just me having issues, look at the comments here most of them are moving away from Sony and even on Sony's own forums are full of complaints about Pie on XZP.

Yes! I use all 3 apps and I have them synced with my OneDrive account. Google apps came pre-installed, I have disabled most of them like docs, slides, photos and hangouts.

I've been on oreo for some time and I never could find the night mode. Where do I find the night mode option. Also I'm still waiting for the pie update to hit my phone. I bought an international version of the xzp but use it on US network.
Sony has disabled night mode/ night light option on XZ Premium for some reason, so there is a little hack that did to enable the default night light option on Oreo, I made a video about it, so when you update to Pie, that feature will be removed and right now unless you root your phone, there is no way to install night mode/ night light back again :(

Where are the gestures? That is the big difference from 8.0/8.1 vs 9. The new features in the OS makes it a much better intuitive device. Don't blame Google. This sounds like Sony pulled a Samsung and got lazy.
Man, even Samsung does not do this kind of thing, The S8 is getting a new UI with Pie same as their current S9 and here in Sony world not only did they remove gestures, but double tap to wake and night light are also missing from Sony's Pie build 😂 the UI is also identical to Nougat/Oreo It's like a Half-baked job and yet fanboys are praising Sony all over for such a sloppy job.

Thanks for the video! Maybe it'll prevent some users from upgrading to Android 9. In my opinion, it SUCKS. They cut out so many precious functions, and made the word "Premium" not applicable to this phone anymore. I also noticed my camera working worse after upgrade.
I agree abou the con especially double tap to wake up because literally, xz1 and xz prem is like Sony want try the experiment on both this device which I like (because this device is the last used omnibalance design). Doesn't mean I don't want to upgrade to xz3 or Xperia 1, but I'd really want to have a usefulness feature for my premium phone. From the z line until xz, it has double tap to wake up but now it's gone, it's hard for me to buy it. I never but another brand because don't have any interest even they have much feature but Sony really make me sad with it :(

What I hate about sony xperia xz premium is:
-4k display eats much energy (cant turn off)
-Speakers low at beginning but not anymore although I didnt update, lol
- I cannot setup the camera key at the side to open a custom app...
- if you got a phone case covering your display... it automatically locks your phone :/ I cant record having the display covered with the case... the sensor is not turn-off able
-I can't mute my phone while wanting to receive phone calls

with the XZ1 and XZ1 compact,sony made 2 types of firmwares. RxC and RxB (x=number). Depending on where you got your phone from it will come with a different firmware. Most phones bought in carriers come with RxC,but not all.(T-Mobile comes with it!) I bought my XZ1 from a tech store and it came with an RxB. EVERY RxC VARIANT IS UPDATED TO ANDROID PIE! The update could drop any moment,but after so many negative reviews,I hope that sony listens and comes out with some improvements over what we're seeing right now

Disappointed with this update. Sony had an opportunity to overhaul the entire UI but did only half the job. Switching to Samsung note 9 soon.
Very true, they did not even include gestures or any new elements from their newer Xperia line, if I am not wrong, Samsung S8 will get a UI overhaul with Pie update. Switch to Samsung, you won't look back even once, I have already done it.

Pir Pirat same here! No NIGHT LIGHT. it is use to adjust your eye on night mode.
@Pir Pirat Its a feature which comes as a part of Android which reduces blue light emission from the screen to reduce eye strain especially at night! had the pie update, crap update, battery drain issue even when you reset the phone, still problems, rushed out update, shame on you sony

I'm selling my xz premium if anyone is interested . Still running Oreo. Dual SIM, international model, deepsea black. Very, very minimal/light scratches on screen but won't affect the display. Noticeable only when screen is off and u shift the phone in different lighting angles. Had a flip style case since the day I bought it back in September '17 . Comes with original box, usb and charging brick.

One Plus 6T is awesome! If you go through comments on my video you will see that a few people have sold their XZ-Premium lol seems like Sony got a lot of hate after this update.

I think my xzs don't need any update anymore after oreo. I still hope one day sony will produce again 5.2 inches phone. I just don't have interest with any 6 inches phone.
