Strange story: In Melee, the Crazy Hand trophy was regarded as one of the hardest trophies in the game to get due to needing to beat the Adventure mode on...I think Very Hard without using any continues. I tried this with ALL of my mains and could never beat it. The one character that I DID beat the mode and collect the elusive Crazy Hand trophy? Ganondorf. I seriously can't explain it or even make sense of it because Ganondorf was never a main for me but, for some reason, GANONDORF was the only character I could actually beat Very Hard Adventure mode without retrying.
What characters did you main?
@@ccmonty994 In Melee it was characters like Fox, Falco, Link, Captain Falcon and Bowser. I realized that my best chances at beating the harder levels were with heavier characters that didn't get thrown around so easily so I guess I realized at that point that Ganondorf would be my best chance.
Technically there are 2 currently impossible trophies
Helmetless samus and I think Mario on yoshi (also a devil thing that’s Japanese exclusive because the gage never released outside of Japan fir having too much religious imagery)
They were prizes at a Japanese TRU tournament and it was a Mario who won
this story reminds me of the time i decided that ganondorf would be my main after i finished the true final boss in ultimate without dying with him

I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that Sakurai himself mained Ganondorf in Brawl. The dude literally made him the worst character in the entire series and chose to main him. What a legend

Makes sense. He made smash specifically because he kicked the ass of everyone he knew so hard they wouldn't play with him anymore. Therefore he made a party game fighter, with items to even the field. Man probably just wrecked everyone so hard that they mistook the skill gap for balance.

The sudden jump to the soft “And then the Vroom-Vroom Man showed up” combined with Captain Falcon growing in frame as the sentence went on sent me into a laughing fit for two and a half minutes.
Ganondorf is THE cheese character. You wanna humiliate your opponent? Wanna make them question their capabilities? Choose ganondorf. If you win, you can gloat all you want cause you won with the worst character. He’s like a more competent Dan
Even top tier ultimate players like Light and Cosmos have been embarrassed in tourney by ganon. Light got reverse 3-0d by ganon
The funny thing about the Sword in Ultimate is that… Ganondorf never actually has that in OoT. He’s used big swords, two swords, tridents, and plenty of dark magic in the games, but the sword he gets in Ultimate technically isn’t in any form of Zelda canon. He just used it in a sword fight with Link during a GameCube tech Demo at Spaceworld 2000. Neither Wind Waker nor Twilight Princess had been shown to the public yet and so OoT was the only game they could really pull from for Ganondorf (plus it was the last big Zelda Title at the time), and he doesn’t really use a weapon in that game (beast Ganon uses two… Daggers? Swords? Either way that’s not the same as Ganondorf and they aren’t fitting enough for him visually), and so Ganondorf got his own fake new Gerudo styled sword to show off during his fight with Link.
It later got to be included in Ganondorf’s Melee trophy, afterwards likely inspiring the design of one of Ganondorf’s Hyrule Warriors swords, and made its oh so grand return in Ultimate where you’ll see it before hearing the damning word from the king of evil himself… “DORIYAAAH!!”
What a lot of people forget is that before Brawl was revealed to be using TP designs, this was the exact sword people wanted him to use. I'm not sure why, maybe because it was in his Melee victory animation, but nonetheless it's such a cool sword that I'm glad that they went with it.

while the sword doesnt show up in canon, you do actually see the sheath in Twilight Princess, the sheath is in the shape of the Space World sword.

How I intended it to read was basically “the Spaceworld sword later got to be included in his Melee trophy, then probably inspired one of the sword designs Ganondorf gets in Hyrule Warriors, and-“ ect., but with how I worded it originally, it ended up reading like “it got to be included in Melee, (and was) likely inspired (by) the Hyrule Warriors swords”. So while my original wording was still correct, it was arranged in such a way that it’s confusing to understand

One interesting tidbit with Smash Ganondorf I'd like to bring up is that his relation to Captain Falcon may have been inspired by his original inspiration. Raoh from Fist of the North Star heavily inspired Ganondorf, both with his design in OoT and his character arc in Wind Waker, and the decision to make him a Falcon clone in Smash may have been rationalized as giving him that same kind of role in the roster. A dominating warlord of the wasteland who decimates all in his path with his mighty fists.
I would really like to see that Raoh inspiration expanded on. That would be so awesome.

Holy shit that’s awesome, also probably not, but he’s pretty similar to crocodile from one piece the scheming, and body type though of course more like Raoh, i just make that comparison since Gannondorf, is the cunning version of Gannon, and it’s probably why link, died in the downfall timeline only in the oot fight.

my friend plays Ganondorf in Ultimate because of how stupid the character is. and for Ganon-cide. its loads of fun
The cuter the character, the more likely they are to smash your face into the pavement. The more badass they seem, the less likely that they'll be able to win a 1 v 1 with the fly buzzing around their head.
It's like how in pokemon, as a kid you think the coolest, most badass looking pokemon are gonna get you to win, only later in life you find out you are losing to a ribombee

@Leeloo_the_fox An important rule for Smash is, it's not about who hits harder it's not getting hit. Little Mac is fast meaning you can both rush down your opponent and run way for a bait and punish. Meaning you can't afford to make a mistake, why because Punch Out is out about avoiding attacks and punishing the opponents.

Prolly most interesting way I say to compensate Ganondorf having trouble moving himself would be to make everyone else struggle moving him too. Make him a solid steel anchor, make it so even at high percents strong finisher moves would barely make him budge.
This is literally how taka-arashi works in virtua fighter. Everyone struggles to combo him because he’s too heavy to be launched for juggles to the point everyone needs to learn taka combos, and sans wolf and Jeffery, 6’8 wrestlers, everyone’s big throws are rechoreographed to animate like you’re trying to throw a 455 pound sumo wrestler. Kage usually izuna drops you into the ground but against taka he has to settle for just a judo flip followed up with a knee drop. The trade off is taka is so easy to smack because of how wide he is so to trade of taking way less damage from combos he generally takes more from pokes.
It's weird that he doesn't have anything like this because the tough guy armor that Bowser and Kazuya have would suit him perfectly. Kazuya in particular is what a good Ganondorf looks like.
@@DylanYoshi Kazuya is what I wish Ganondorf was like. Ganondorf is the prime example of a badly designed superheavyweight, and Kazuya is the complete opposite. First of all is the concept of heavyweights themselves. A heavyweight is a character that trades speed for stamina/weight. Basically, you're trading speed for survivability. But for some reason, superheavies in Smash tend to have terrible recoveries which cancels out their high survivability. Ganondorf has the second worst recovery in the game only behind Doctor Mario while Kazuya has an actually decent recovery, which makes him actually survive for very long like a real heavyweight. Then there's the advantage. Heavyweights are supposed to have a bad neutral but when they do get in, they are unstoppable. Ganondorf is hyped to have this massive power that kills you in a few interactions but the fact is that his advantage is not even impressive. So what if he gets a single hit that does 15% damage? If you're half decent, even a Sheik combo deals comparable damage or at least close, and Sheik has an actual good neutral so what's the upside here? Kazuya has awful neutral but can straight up kill you in one interaction. If you do not like Kazuya due to the controversies, take even Incineroar. Incineroar's revenge boosted alolan wip deals big numbers. Revenge as a whole is just a very well designed mechanic for a heavy because it punishes attacking carelessly like a heavyweight should. Both Kazuya and Incineroar make you tiptoe like you're walking in a landmine which is exactly the spirit of a heavyweight: to be menacing and nerve wrecking, making you know that any single mistake can cost you really hard.
@@impossiblehanley2732 Ganonforf is a very defensive High Risk high reward character. Not only can he take a hit but he can dish it out, the problem is if you make a mistake you're done. At the same time when Ganon does punish you, it's extremely punishing. Since Ganon has the Triforce of Power, Power is all he's got. Heavily's kinda have to be patient, but Ganon to the theory to the extreme.
Give him a passive ability that reduces the knockback he takes as he receives damage, so he's stuck at the knockback you deal at 0%.
Ganondorf is supposed to be the big final boss of Zelda? Make him play like a final boss

As a note, the sword Gannondorf uses in Smash is not his Ocarina of Time Sword, it's a special sword from Twilight Princess. I don't recall if he ever actually uses it in that game, but it was one of the swords the Sages tried to use to bind him at the end of the Child Story of Ocarina of Time. This same sword can be acquired in Breath of the Wild with a Ganondorf Amiibo and the in-game item directly references this.
In his appearances in Smash *before* Ultimate that is. In Ultimate it's not the same sword. Oh and yes, in the final fight against Ganondorf in Twilight Princess he duels you with the sword that he was "executed" with, which is metal as f*ck.
@@thecommonman9524 I just looked it up and he actually uses the Space World 2000 sword he used in a tech demo in Smash Ultimate and in Smash Melee it was a part of his victory poses. In Smash Brawl and Smash 4 he uses the Sword of the Seven Sages in his taunts, but not to attack except one custom move in 4. I mixed the two swords up because one of the Claymores in BotW is very similar to Ganondorf's Space World sword and drops from the Amiibo. Still, Ganondorf does not use a sword in Ocarina of Time until he transforms into Ganon.
It looks like that sword is the claymore Darknuts use in Twighlight Princess, right? It's been a while since I've played that game, but they look kinda similar.

I honestly would love to see you look more into lower tier characters in fighting games. It'd be amazing to see you cover people like Hugo from Street Fighter or Kuma in Tekken.
hugo is kindof interesting. i do not know that much about competitive street fighter, but from what i see, hugo was like ganondorf: slow and bottom tier. however, he was also a strong counter against yun, a top tier in SF4. imagine if ganondorf countered meta knight in brawl or bayonetta in smash 4 and that was basically hugo

His Brawl Up Smash is also really good actually, it's one of the VERY few moves in the game that can safely hit through Meta Knight Tornado!

In smash 4 it has 2 frames of recovery. Meaning you have to try to punish something with a big hitbox that kills really early in 1/30th of a second.

I honestly hope the next Smash is about giving every character the DLC treatment: A design faithful to both their home series and playstyle. Ganondorf should be tossing about energy balls and floating all over the place, not suiciding and ramming himself into everything.
That's very biased towards Ocarina though. TP and maybe WW would need rep too without seeming too...eh.
keep the ganonciding just give him a projectile, make some of his moves reflect and give him better recovery and he'll be mid-tier at least and an even bigger beast to deal with

All this love for Ganondorf makes me think he should appear in the next Bumbles McRumbles. As opposed to his canonical evil beefcake chessmaster, this Ganon is just a larger-than-life wall of wrestling spirit. He doesn't give a hoot about whether he wins or loses a match, he just wants to put on a good show for the crowd.
My best friend's younger brother has mastered the usage of Ganondorf in SSBU (he's religiously mained the dorf since Smash4). Whenever I'm over for couch multiplayer we usually play three way FFA, so he's become a very patient player, waiting for me and his older brother to open the fight for him so he can sweep in and kill us both while we're not looking. It's incredibly dangerous especially when he's zoning on an omega or battlefield stage, meaning a large portion of the stage is practically off limits for anyone that isn't also a damage sponge. He rarely wins a match, but he always makes sure to take us down with him a few times.

When my family played Smash 4 my dad would always thrash us as Ganondorf. When we got Ultimate I bounced around characters until I was decent at all of them, and could win against everyone else. Then my dad comes in as Ganondorf and Bowser and we compete… and I discover how to actually fight them as GRENINJA of all characters. Shadow sneak spam is fun. :)

@@ThyBigCheddar With heavy weights like Bowser and K rool. Only some of their non Smash attacks kill. With Ganon nearly all of his non Smash attacks kill at hight percent. The price for this much power, is that you can't afford to make a mistake. Ganon is a high risk high reward character, to the absolute extreme.
This is kinda like Ganon boss fights in that in order for Ganon to win, the player has to make mistakes. That's because Ganon boss fights are so easy to exploit, expect for maybe Pig Ganon.
@@orangeslash1667 First off, no. Bowser and K rool have more kill power than Ganon due to super amour and better approach options. Second, Pyra has the same kill potential in her smash attacks as Ganondorf. And she doesn't have extreme downsides. Third, he's not high risk high reward. He's just bad. He's high risk low reward. Compare him to the other heavyweights who all have the same upsides but less downsides.
Fourth, this logic is the same in every single boss fight ever made. That's how you lose a fight. And they aren't easy to exploit, they're just bad. Other than the totk fight, they're all slow, simple, or have very little required input.
Also every time Ganondorf uses the Triforce of power he doesn't have insanely strong attacks but a ton of downsides. In TP he gets resistance to death, in OOT he gets better magic, and in wind waker he doesn't even use the thing.

Ganondorf is perfectly balanced is the best summary of this video.
He isn't useless, has funny moves to style on people that aren't free kill confirm recoveries like Byleth's for example. He is exactly what you want in a FUN GAME. When you get into hyper competitive he sucks. Hyper competitive ruins everything though.
Be it Pokemon, League of Legends, or Smash. The reason CoD became a cesspool is because it was competition and exploiting to win above all else. Ganondorf isn't bad, unhealthy competition is bad.

I feel like I learned something about how to play him.
Something that gets forgotten in talk about competitive Smash (which you did allude to) is that Smash isn't actually designed for the competitive ruleset we generally understand. Some characters like Ness are designed for a more hectic free-for-all where they can get away with playing the sidelines, someone like Kirby excels in more complex stages. Melee's trophies outright said that Pichu's intended design is basically 'tiny quick asshole that takes all the items'.
The slow beefers like Ganondorf and Bowser struggle in competitive because they're supposed to be really good at having fucking ENORMOUS attacks with high priority. They're basically human stage hazards; you keep them in mind and you can usually get around them, but it's gonna suck for everyone else when they forget about them for long enough that suddenly they line up two and a half kills off a single smash attack by gatecrashing everyone else's fight. But that scenario's never going to happen in competitive 1v1, so they're always behind.

I think Ganondorf and other low tiers like Little Mac show how different Platform Fighters from other fighting games. In normal fighting games, mobility is still important, but it's possible to make characters that are good without good mobility. In Platform Fighters however, Mobility is KEY to being successful. Even if you have a ton of damage, a lack of mobility will cripple you in the end. It is a PLATFORM fighter after all. And then this opens the doors for other fighting game concepts like Grapplers and Zoners and how they work differently in Platform Fighters.

Im honestly happy there's a section for the smash 4 custom moves. I still remember meeting up with the boys in the morning before we had to go to our classes breaking out our 3DS & going to town. I'd always dominate with with warlock blade & chain Letting me just overwhelm everyone with pure power....

Fun Fact: Ganondorfs model in Melee isnt from OOT. It actually comes straight from that zelda tech demo which would eventually become wind waker. Yep the exact same model
Not a great designed character and they could modify his kick to be better but he's not meant to be 'on meta' just slow and powerful. If they cared about balancing then maybe add some features Captain Falcon never had but who has the speed to back up his heavy hits while Ganon is made slower, more powerful, but now doesn't have any way to make an approach. Smash really shouldnt be taken too seriously, odd to hear on a talk of competitive viability but most characters should be fun first and then see what the fanbase makes of them in no-items matches

Heya Bumbles, as a Ganon player I just wanted to say this was a great video! But I also wanted to ask if you've ever tried Project M's take on Ganondorf? Truly feels like the best of both worlds to me but funnily enough even then is still at best mid tier. Despite this, he's considerably more viable (mainly in part due to PM not really having any "bad" characters) and he has a lot of cool new tools, options, and references that I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts about.

every day i mourn the fact we didn't get ultimate ganon's new moveset with Wizard's Dropkick + Dark Fists + Flame Chain (or keep Choke). Would have been the perfect version of him mechanically...
Yup. I think I have a similar feeling about little Mac. I don't play him to win. I play him for those occasions where I uppercut the other guy into orbit.

Ganondorf in Smash is a complete opposite of how he is in his series. He's a major threat in the Zelda series, but is consistently one of the worst characters in Smash. Ganondorf fights with magic or swords in the Zelda series, but with his fists in Smash. He's the character that desperately needs a moveset overhaul the most since it doesn't accurately represent Ganondorf and it isn't a unique moveset. They could just add Black Shadow and give him Ganondorf's current moveset if they didn't want to completely remove his moveset entirely.
Ganondorf has the Triforce of power, so how do you make Ganondorf powerful without making him overpowered???? Sakurai felt that this was the only way.

@@SonicTheCutehog Sakurai usually simplifies a character if they might have too much potential. A good example is Pit having some references to Uprising but not too much.
While Ganon is build up as a threat in the Zelda series, his boss fights are not that challenging compared to Bowser and K Rool. Ganon is Smash kinda faithful to his boss fights in that he is predicable and very exploitable.
Also Sakurai confirmed that Ganon was never planned to be in Smash at all and was put in at the last minute ruclips.net/video/k6yBinvPWpk/видео.html.
@@orangeslash1667 That argument is blown out of the water due to characters like Steve and isn't the reason why Ganondorf is the way he is. He was a very last-minute addition to Melee, which meant he couldn't have a unique moveset. They took his model from the SpaceWorld 2000 GameCube Zelda tech demo due to these time constraints. Ganondorf's model happened to match Captain Falcon's skeleton, so they made him a Falcon clone. Later games would differentiate him slightly more, but would still be close to Captain Falcon due to not wanting to alienate players who liked his old moveset. If Ganondorf was added in Brawl or a later Smash game, he wouldn't be anything like he is now.

Characters like Sephiroth and Zelda can use spells because their so lightweight. Giving a bulky character like Ganon spells would be broken. Unlike Sephiroth where it makes sense to make him lightweight. I can't think of a reason how Ganon being lightweight would fit his character????Especially when dead mans Volley is not that great of a spell compared to Dins fire.
There is good news Ganon does have an advantage against Pikachu, Plautanea, and Incineroar. Wizards foot can go though projectiles like T Jolt and Flame coke can negate Plautanea's and Incineroar's Down B.
Most importantly is that Ganon is so much fun in double battles, because it's easy for anyone to make a mistake and Ganon's high defense lets him endure enough for his friend to help out.
I just wish he had a moveset that represent his series as a villian, not Falcon Wizard Curl.

Weird comparison, But by the sound of it, Ganondorf is the Smash equivalent of the Orks from Warhammer 40k.
Unga-Bunga tactics, (One of the best tactics for an Ork player is literally fill your side with low cost units and pretty much drown the enemy.) Skills that basically mean you are either winning hard or losing hard (Thanks to attributes unique to Orks, The roll of the dice can either increase their damage, Or straight up kill themselves or each other. This means you can start dominating early on, Only for everything to start falling apart at the drop of a hat, And vice versa.) And the fact that out of everyone, They seem to be the most fun group over all. (Thanks to previously mentioned quirks.)
