    heres a interesting one:
in the original Zoo Tycoon game, when you put 2 animals of different species, that wheren't compatible, in the same enclosure, they would start fighting and obviously the stronger and more predatory ones would get the adventage...but a glitch made that the PENGUINS where the strongest animals in the game, to the point that if you put a penguim and a T-Rex (there was a expansion that added dinosaurs) to fight, the penguim would win
later, in zoo tycoon 2, the "extinct animals" expansion more expecificaly, they put a easter egg in witch, if you messed up a fossil cloning mini game, you could get a "Killer Penguim", wich was a made up animal, that consisted of a penguim with red eyes that was very aggressive and could kill every other animal in the game with ease, clearly being a reference to the glitch from the first game

To build off the Gandhi stuff, that glitch not only influenced how Gandhi played, but the fact Gandhi was playable for so long.
You see, for Civ 6 they made an effort to make all leaders be new to Civ, or at the very least different from the last game. This even went so far as replacing famous leaders like Caesar with less popular figures like Trajan. That is, except Gandhi.
Gandhi became the only Civ leader to appear in the base game of every civilization, a title which used to be shared with around five. While other returning leaders like Shaka Zulu and Alexander the Great would be added in DLC, Gandhi would wear that crown alone.
This actually did get a bit of negative feedback. India is a super diverse country with a lot of ethnic groups, and it was disappointing for a lot that their entire history and people would be only represented by one person, a person who was only important to modern India. Now, Civilization has a history of picking weird or unrepresentative leaders, but at least for any other country there was a good chance the next game would give you a different flavor.
This actually led the devs to releasing Chandragupta, an ancient Indian leader, making India one of the few civs to actually use the alternate leader mechanic. It wasn’t the best, since India as a Civ was all based around Gandhi more than the culture itself, but it did make a good number of fans satisfied.
As important as Gandhi was to history, it is hard to say he’d be the leader in every game if not for that glitch. Especially considering he was more of a social leader, than a full on head of state.

Additionally, what was _actually_ going on with Gandhi in civ 1, to my knowledge, is that he doesn't build much in the way of military. And, well, when you attack someone with no military, and a whole lot of nukes, What do you think they're going to do?
      Yep, Nuke you into oblivion.

      Also: Not true.
The way Civ 1 is coded in C means that the alleged aggression underflow literally cannot happen.

    • @Neogears1312

It doesn’t help modern Indian youths actually don’t particularly like Gandhi. Older generations idolize him that’s well known, but as time has gone on and information has become more easily accessible, Indians tend to view him as a bit of a fraud who made others do his great deed’s while he would take the credit and was a slut for lack of more eloquent word, akin to how Benjamin Franklin went from historically one of Americas greatest icons to a selfish man whore who got people killed for his famous achievement. So it’s not just a lack of diversity, or people know how bad he was now and aren’t immediately blinded by worship and they want someone else representing them. It’d be like if America was solely repped by Ronald Reagan, or Britain by Margaret thatcher. If you’ve done some research you’d really appreciate a second opinion on your sole representation.

This cosmetic can be equipped to any weapon in the "Heavy Blade" category, but is rendered at double size when equipped with a specific weapon called the "Zenistar". It’s strange to think that certain mechanics that made games fun were actually never intended, such as enemy juggling in Devil May Cry.
It’s also fun to see how certain mechanics interacting with each other in weird ways too. I actually followed some UE4 tutorials on gliding and wall jumping, and when you wall jumped mid-glide, you jumped back at a higher angle than a normal wall jump, which I can see being fun for certain challenges or for hiding secrets. It also made sense since I wanted gliding to work in-universe with the power of wind.

DMC was made specifically for juggling and the glitch of juggling was actually discovered during development of Onimusha. Onimusha's combat system couldn't take advantage of juggling very well and the glitch was fixed so it wouldn't happen during the game, but Hideki Kamiya saw it in action, thought it was cool, and decided he wanted to make a game based on juggling enemies in combat and long combo sequences while dusting off his rejected "Stylish" proposal for Resident Evil 4. That's how Devil May Cry was born.

Kinda disappointed Creepers didn't end up here. They were originally supposed to be pigs, but Notch, in his infinite wisdom, somehow swapped the x and y coordinates of the body, making it stand on end, with all the legs bundled up at the bottom. Instead of scrapping the model, however, he tucked it away, gave it a new coat of paint, and filled it with nitroglycerine. Thus was the birth of the creeper. This is even (vaguely) referenced in one of the splash texts for the game, "Don't look directly at the bugs!"

  • @DatMageDoe

    A couple more:
Lift Jumping. In many older FPS games, an oversight in the physics engine caused jumping at the right point while riding a lift would allow you to preserve the lift's velocity and go much further than intended. Later games decided to turn that into a feature, with things like intentionally hiding secrets at the top of lifts. Some platformers opted to use this as a mechanic, oftentimes taken to 11.
Bunnyhopping. In some games, jumping allows you to move faster than walking, and stringing jumps together would result in being able to move much faster. This was unintended, but some games (like Quake and CounterStrike) ran with it and made it a proper feature. Special shoutout to Half-Life 2 which attempted to patch out Bunnyhopping, but did it in such a way it only made Bunnyhopping IN REVERSE even faster than it was before.

Wow, I did not expect you to pull out Trombe of all things, but super happy you did as SRW is one of my favorite franchises.
In case you (or another viewer) didn’t know, some of the series (like Sega Hard Girls) were only in the mobile exclusive X-Omega. So, they aren’t in the normal games (which are Turn Based Strategy)
However, one of the major contributors of X-Omega is that it opened the doors for the main games to have other “non-traditional mech” series in them.
This is what’s led to stuff like “Space Battleship Yamato”, “Magic Knight Rayearth”, and even “Cowboy Bebop” in them.
If anyone out there hasn’t taken a look at the series I highly recommend it at the least for its crossover story potential and the amazing animations for the various attacks each mech has.

There is one thing from Devil May Cry that you could've talked about: Distortion.
In DMC3, if you timed your Devil Trigger activation just as a move hit an enemy, the move would hit again in DT and do absurd damage. The most popular move to do this with was Real Impact, so much so that fans abbreviated it to DRI. Capcom looked at this and said "Hey, let's make that a feature." And thusly in DMC4 you can distort moves, this time it even gives a little visual indication. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, it is absent from DMC5.

A glitch in the game's physics engine allowed players to rapidly glide down slopes with properly timed taps of the jump button. This became *THE* defining movement tech in the game and the devs adopted it and made it into a feature for the sequel. Skiing is so prominent to Tribes's identity as a franchise that even when the series changed developers skiing continued to be kept and refined for every subsequent game and no other game has really even tried to copy it.

@@ThatManOverThere They definitely knew why it was happening and how to fix it, hell I knew why it was happening when I was a literal child. They knew it was in melee during development, it wasn't removed in 1.01 or 1.02 with the ton of other stuff that was changed, and it wasn't re-implemented during Brawl's development (which used Havok for physics) because they felt that it made the skill ceiling too high and made the game less fun for less skilled players:
Sakurai: Of course, we noticed that you could do that during the development period. With Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it wasn't a matter of, "OK, do we leave it in or do we take it out?"
We really just wanted this game, again, to appeal to and be played by gamers of all different levels. We felt that there was a growing gap between beginners and advanced players, and taking that out helps to level the playing field. It wasn't a big priority or anything, but when we were building the game around the idea of making it fair for everybody, it just made sense to take it out. And it also goes back to wanting to make something different from Melee and giving players the opportunity to find new things to enjoy.
It's an exploitation of a clearly intentional part of the physics engine. Like, seriously, ~having coded game engines myself~, they absolutely knew that it was possible. It's a core part of the physics engine's design, momentum and friction don't just code themselves (unless you use an off the shelf engine, I guess). All the behaviour here is outright intended, it's not a bug (or a glitch), though the way it's used now is certainly not what they expected and is an exploit at most. Sakurai, in 2002, called it a "technique" and implied that it wasn't very useful. There's no evidence that they wanted to fix it, and why would they? Who in their right mind would constantly do multiple inputs to move around the stage a bit faster??
Also, if you're testing how core movement mechanics interact with the goddamn stage that late in development, you fucked up big time stylee

Yeah it’s possible but pretty unlikely for it to have been coded in a way that would allow this type of underflow. For it to happen he would have needed to have stored the value for aggression in an unsigned char, which is a valid option if you plan on going to an aggression that’s over 127, having no negative values, and keeping the extremely low storage space of a char. But given that the aggression system was meant to be out of 12, it would be an odd choice to have the variable be stored in an unsigned char as opposed to a signed char, which has the same storage space but can account for negatives without overflowing.

In the King of Fighters 95' three characters, Ryo Robert and Kim, have a super where they rush you then proceed to beat you to death. But in 95 the positioning registration was bugged on the moves, So instead of a ground dash that's high risk high reward, this allowed you to do these big air dashes at an opponent then get massive damage as it's impossible to fall out of the move once it hits, which made it a phenomenal anti air.
This was really busted on Ryo because he had an air projectile and even though the next game got rid of it they still didn't think he should have that level of air dominance. Robert's super got the same treatment because it was literally the exact same move as he is the Ken to Ryo's...well, Ryu. Tribes was a sci-fi tactical shooter with jetpacks, vehicles, and a variety of high-tech weapons, including it's signature "Spinfusor" which was basically a rocket launcher with the serial numbers filed off.
It's maps were also stupidly large. Like, "an entire fucking mountain range" large, making traversal slow and cumbersome unless you used a vehicle, as jetpacks had limited energy.
Until someone realized that if you just input the jump command on the side of a steep hill really quickly, the game forgot friction existed. Players would use this to achieve absurd downhill speeds, then rely on that momentum to carry them up other hills, and even install client-side macros to spam jump hundreds of times a second to ski with as little friction as possible.
Combine that with the fact that it already had rocket launchers as standard issue weapons and jetpacks and what was _supposed_ to be a tactical sci-fi shooter quickly instead became a grease-laden bipedal flight sim with players hurtling around at triple-digit speeds trying to nail eachother with projectile weapons.
Skiing would become an official feature in Tribes 2, with maps featuring rounder hills and terrain explicitly designed for skiing and a button that automatically ditched your character's friction.

Granted it's probably not properly a glitch as much as it is a weird physics quirk since it technically remains in later smash games, just neutered heavily to prevent it from becoming what it did in Melee. (For better or worse, probably depends on who you ask)

    The Trombe section was awesome.

Dude, that Super Robot Wars entry is hilarious. Like, the fact that they decided that anyone who wants to overpower Trombe needs an _in-universe_ reason to do so just impresses me for no good reason.

Overwatch's Doomfist is THE glitch character, as all of his abilities interact with the game in ways they never should. His rocket punch can provide an extra burst of speed at any point as well as a turn, it can slide on walls, it can bounce, it can be angled on the environment, and that's just ONE ability

Just like Street Fighter, only hearing "Team Fortress" is strange and I don't like it

Halo 2 had many glitches such as sword flying where your energy sword has an nigh infinite lunge range and BXR comboing which which basically led to free kills, these became weapon perks with Bungies 30th anniversary update for Destiny 2.
Bxr comboing became a perk for the battle rifle called blunt execution rounds which increased damage on the next burst after landing a melee attack.
Sword flying became the 30 anniversary swords exclusive perk eager edge which greatly increases sword lunge range. This perk actually allowed for several movement options, seriously look up 'Destiny 2 Wellskate' or 'Destiny 2 Shatterskate' its crazy.

Rocket Jumping from Quake ended up in the GoldSRC engine (Half-Life 1, Team Fortress Classic, and the original Counter Strike) which then evolved into the Source engine, leaving Rocket Jumping in the Source engine
