Awesome video!! Wow. I really enjoyed watching and learning about how to do this project. I think I still have a 3 to 4 foot long water moccasin snakeskin in my freezer somewhere that I saved thinking maybe I'd do something with it. It's not a really beautiful snake pattern and so if I mess it up, it won't matter. If you get a minute, take a look at my water moccasin video on my channel. It shows a really pretty juvenile moccasin with an awesome pattern for a hat band. Let me know if you think that might make a good hat band. I didn''t kill it however but I have a pretty good idea where it stays so I might go looking for it. Basically it hangs out around my corn feeder for deer eating mice that come to eat the corn. If I get it, I wouldn't want to mess it up so I'd probably see if I could send it to you and pay you to do the work for me. I have an abundance of snakes here on my land, mostly moccasins and king snakes but I have seen copperheads and one dead baby rattler. I think the copperheads might make really pretty hat bands too. Just another question on this topic if I may. I have a traditional archer friend who makes self bows. I'm a traditional archer too but don't have a self bow and really want one. I'm trying to get him to make me one from an Osage Orange tree's wood I have here on my land. The plan I have in mind is to put a snakeskin face on the front of the bow limbs. I'm thinking that might take two snakes that are fairly closely matched in pattern....one for the upper limb and one for the lower one. The snake skin would flex a little when the bow is pulled back and shot so what kind of skins do you think might work best? Any help appreciated.
Barge Cement. It's kind of a rubber cement/ contact cement type glue. Yellow, messy and it'll make you see flying purple alligators! It works great though.

The denatured alchohol and glycerin is called pickling which only works on certain kinds of snakes like rattlers. If the scales don't over lap and have really stretchy skin inbetween the scales it doesn't work. How would you treat say like a black racer. Thanks.
I really can't say for sure, I haven't been around those. Really for a hat band, you don't have to tan them at all. Just glue them down to the leather.
Contact cement. Barge brand is best, but has gotten too expensive, so I refill the can with Dap brand Contact cement/rubber glue. I like the brush in the lid of the old Barge can.
It is, but "Dap contact cement" is a close second and about half the price. Barge is great on leather. I use it on most of my saddles and every saddle maker I know does too. Still, I think you are paying mostly for the brand name.
Most times I do use scrap split pieces. The glue sticks better to the fuzzy leather than smooth. It's about 1/8" thick, so probably 5-8 ounce or so? Easy to make, give it a try.
On something like a hatband, there really isn't any need to tan it. I just skin, flesh and dry it. Then glue it down. If you live someplace it rains a lot, it might get soft un-tanned. I know several people that have had these, un-tanned for years without any troubles.
Mr. Muskrat, I am getting ready to skin a 2ft Texas Coral Snake, do you have any tips for the tanning process? This is my first one. Thank you sir, enjoy your videos!
I have tanned them using 50/50 glycerin and rubbing alcohol. I've heard antifreeze (the green kind) and alcohol works too. What will you use it for? You might not need to tan it at all. This hatband isn't tanned. The tanning above, is kinda greasy feeling and the glue won't stick as well. There's commercial reptile tanning kits you can use also. For a hat band, I wouldn't bother tanning it.
I think people have a deep instinct to be afraid of snakes. It bothers some folks more than others. Some folks aren't really afraid of them so much as just creeped out by them.
I am NOT the guy who regularly quotes the Bible.... BUT: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Genesis 3:15
Rattlesnake grading our irrigation all coiled up and ready to strike can't have rattlesnakes trying to attack you on your own property anyway he's already Tanning felt bad about just throwing him in ground do nothing with him when you're trying to protect yourself and your family you have to do what's best
You do! I don't kill them unless they are someplace too close to people. Even then I catch them alive and move them if possible. If I do kill them, I try to use them for something.
The hardware store used to have them, but it went out of business. Look for some about a inch around, maybe 3/4". If you have a second hand/thrift shop there, sometimes old purses will have good rings on them. "D" shaped ones would work also.
I don't find many snakes. I might have one here still, but would have to look. If I find one this summer I can make you one. Send me your address, my email is muskrat14@hotmail.com

I'm curious how you treat the skin? Mine are done with denatured alchohol and glycerin. Mine don't sound crunchy. They stay soft. Is there a reason you dry them to be so dry. This isn't a criticism it's just an inquiry.
Glued down to the leather on a hat band they don't have any flex anyway and tanning really isn't necessary. I do tan them the same way you are doing for some things that have more flex to them though. Snake skin is thin and really not very durable for heavy use. Have you seen the rattlesnake gun grips folks are making now? Really neat! I think you would need to cover them with heavy varnish or maybe fiberglass resin. I want to try to make some! Look up "Rattlesnake gun grip images" there should be pictures. Grips for a 1911 Colt would be easy!
My email address is muskrat14@hotmail.com I don't always have the snake skins to do it, but I do have several snakes right now. I would need to know the size, but I could make one for you.
This one is not tanned at all. Glued down with contact cement to a strip of leather, they don't need to be tanned. They will last like this for a lot of years.
You sure you wanna sell it? That looks good on you! I was waiting for Chris Ledoux to start playing "Cowboy Hat" 😆. Go ahead and save that rattlesnake meat for Gilliam. He needs to do some more wild game cooking and that would be up his alley...or in his freezer. Speaking of selling things, have you been selling any of the leather holsters?
Too late on the meat! I have eaten it, it's about like a chicken neck. Lots of bone and a little meat that really does "taste like chicken". This one got diced up in a jar for Sun rendered rattlesnake oil. I have a gun holster yet to make, and a knife sheath, but haven't sold any for awhile. Winter is coming and that's when I sell most of them. I put that band on a straw hat Cindy has, it looks good on it, so we might keep this one. I have more snake skins...
That sounds good! I ate a raccoon once, but it wasn't good.......roasted over a camp fire and basted in beer......I don't think that is the "normal" way to cook them. Worst thing I ever tried was coyote.......pretty drunk at the time on that one!
I remember seeing Steve Rinella with the show Meateater make coyote in the Southwest after a hunt. Supposedly it was good. I really wouldn't mind trying much of anything if it's prepared for me. I'm not going to go out of my way to cook coyote or something like that though.
I'm not a good cook. Most of these things were tried over a camp fire without spices other than salt & pepper. I'm sure if someone that knows what they are doing cooked them, it would be good. Meat is meat after all.
Nice .. where I am located I have to kill many rattle snakes .. I do skin them from time to time and use anti freeze for curing them .. generally I just gave them to a leather guy I know .. I might try to build me one of these had bands .. Thanks
I have tanned them with a 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol and glycerin also. For a hat band, the glue sticks better to the raw, dry, skin though. Have you seen the rattlesnake gun grips people are making? Most are for 1911 Colt style pistols, but I've seen some revolver grips too. Since snakeskin is so thin, and not very tough, I think they are coating them with some type of heavy varnish, or maybe fiberglass resin. I want to make some this winter.
@@MuskratOutdoors No I haven't seen any .. I'm not real handy at making stuff better at training animals lol but will try the hat band with the skin I have now.. It is a real different colored up rattlesnake me and my grandson skinned ..

Great video! How do you make one with the rattle on? Have been wanting to make a hat band with a skin I have but not sure how I'm going to do it in order to keep the rattle.
Snakes are a lot like fish and spoil fast. Skin it as soon as possible, but it will keep several days in the refrigerator. Skinning them only takes a few minutes though and it's best to do it as soon as possible.
It's a felt "Beaver Brand" hat. Every hat I've ever had will eventually crack where it's creased, so years ago I started punching them out round. They shed water better that way too!
I don't always have them. I'm so behind on my leatherwork, I don't want to take any more orders right now. I think what I'll try doing, is make one now and then, and put it up for sale on these videos.
Mostly I don't. I have a booth at the Horse Sale here in town where I sell my leatherwork once a year. I don't get very many snakes, so I don't sell them very often.
@@micahsimpson1989 Thank you very much. I do get snakes from time to time. If you send me your email address (Mine is in the "about" section on the home page) I'll let you know if I get one.
I don't have much against the wolves, but too many are too many. A few are alright, but for awhile we had so many here that they were a real problem. Ranchers were loosing cattle, and there was very few deer and elk. I used to see at least six moose each year, now it's rare to see one. Last winter I saw the first one in at least five years. Sad! Now that we are allowed to hunt and trap for them, I view them as just another "game animal" and a challenge like no other. They are the hardest to get animal I have ever gone after.

I'm thinking that might take two snakes that are fairly closely matched in pattern....one for the upper limb and one for the lower one. The snake skin would flex a little when the bow is pulled back and shot so what kind of skins do you think might work best? Any help appreciated.
Great work. What kind of glue did you use?
Barge Cement. It's kind of a rubber cement/ contact cement type glue. Yellow, messy and it'll make you see flying purple alligators! It works great though.
The denatured alchohol and glycerin is called pickling which only works on certain kinds of snakes like rattlers. If the scales don't over lap and have really stretchy skin inbetween the scales it doesn't work. How would you treat say like a black racer. Thanks.
I really can't say for sure, I haven't been around those. Really for a hat band, you don't have to tan them at all. Just glue them down to the leather.
Just caught a big Mojave green next to the dog córrale, gonna put it on my hat, great video!
GREAT! I got one last night. Almost stepped on this one. It was breakfast this morning and is on my nephew's hat today!
You did an excellent job, really cool! The Hat Band looks very neat. Did you throw that rattle out? Can't you use it later for other crafts?
I couldn't figure out whether the parrot had a good mood or a bad one ))))
Thank you! The rattles had broken off and were gone, otherwise I would have kept them.
Hard to say with that bird! It babbles like that a lot!
Finished product looks AWESOME. What kind of glue were you using?
Contact cement. Barge brand is best, but has gotten too expensive, so I refill the can with Dap brand Contact cement/rubber glue. I like the brush in the lid of the old Barge can.
@@MuskratOutdoors I just looked on eBay. $39 per quart! That stuff must be good...
It is, but "Dap contact cement" is a close second and about half the price. Barge is great on leather. I use it on most of my saddles and every saddle maker I know does too. Still, I think you are paying mostly for the brand name.
Very cool work Muskrat! I’ve wanted to make one of these but never thought of using the leather inside. Do you split the leather? What weight leather?
Most times I do use scrap split pieces. The glue sticks better to the fuzzy leather than smooth. It's about 1/8" thick, so probably 5-8 ounce or so? Easy to make, give it a try.
Thank you!!! ❤
Thank you too.
Interesting video Muskrat. I don’t mess with snakes tho
I probably shouldn't really. Someday I'll probably get bit!
You should come Beaver trapping in Bama David. 😂😂😂
no snakes . Cris
Very helpful! What kinda glue do you use?
Barge Cement. Any rummer contact cement type glue would work though. Lately, I've been buying Weldwood Dap Rubber Cement.
I was going to say, that you could sell the hat band for sure. Thanks for the video.
Thanks. I do sell them now and then.
After the skinning do you just flesh it and let it dry and be finished? Or do you tan it or treat it in some way?
On something like a hatband, there really isn't any need to tan it. I just skin, flesh and dry it. Then glue it down. If you live someplace it rains a lot, it might get soft un-tanned. I know several people that have had these, un-tanned for years without any troubles.
Muskrat Outdoors ok thanks!
Nice to see an older person on RUclips.
HA! Thanks!.....I think!
June 15, 2022: Thanks very much. This helped with my fear of these creepy creatures.
Ha! Welcome!!
Totally awesome dude
Thank you!!
Oh… Great Video too. 😂
Thank you!!!
Do you have a store to buy hat bands?
@@MuskratOutdoors I loved the hatband you made do you have a store or ?
Out of all the animals I've skinned the sound of skinning a rattlesnake always messes with me, don't know why
I think people have a deep instinct to be afraid of snakes. It bothers some folks more than others. Some folks aren't really afraid of them so much as just creeped out by them.
@@MuskratOutdoors I could see that, it's just that cracking. I personally feel like its the sound of evil
@@angrycrow8961 HA! I agree!
I am NOT the guy who regularly quotes the Bible.... BUT:
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Was the hide tanned at some point or just green?
Nope, just green. I dried it on a board for a few days is all.
Did you apply anything to the skin during those few days? Like salt?
Where did you get the ring at that you used in the hat band
The hardware store used to have them, but it went out of business. Look for some about a inch around, maybe 3/4". If you have a second hand/thrift shop there, sometimes old purses will have good rings on them. "D" shaped ones would work also.
Where can I buy a snake hat band from you? Please let me know thank you very much.
@@MuskratOutdoors ...how much do snakehides sale for?
@@hhguerra59 I honestly don't know. We get them every now and then, but mostly I don't kill them.
I am interested in a hat band, how do I go about buying one from ya?
My email address is
muskrat14@hotmail.com
I don't always have the snake skins to do it, but I do have several snakes right now. I would need to know the size, but I could make one for you.
What was your process for tanning
This one is not tanned at all. Glued down with contact cement to a strip of leather, they don't need to be tanned. They will last like this for a lot of years.
What kind of glue is that you use?
I use Barge Cement, or Weldwood/Dap Contact Cement. Both are kind of a rubber cement type glue. They stay flexable and really stick well.
I would happily pay $35 dollars for one of those when you mentioned $25 dollars I was thinking that it was kinda cheap
I tend to sell things for too little. I guess I go by what I would pay, and I kind of live in the past....
Yeah, I think you are spot on.
Very cool thank you.
Thank you!
Nice .. where I am located I have to kill many rattle snakes ..
What kind of glue did you use???????
I use contact cement. Barge or Weld wood / Dap works great.
How did you dry the skin?
They just air dry. Get any meat or fat off first. They are thin and dry fast.
Nice Bro
Thank you Tony! What's new, haven't seen anything from ya in awhile.
yeah man been a little crazy here....they shut down my place of work so been crazy.....Got me a new camera tho so putting together couple vids....just got to edit them
Sorry to hear that. My wife lost her job too for the same reason. Feed store went out of business after a big box store moved in.
Yeah is what it is......enjoy your videos man.....you make your own music.....Im trying to find some for mine
Great video! How do you make one with the rattle on? Have been wanting to make a hat band with a skin I have but not sure how I'm going to do it in order to keep the rattle.
The same way, but without the rings. Make a belt loop type loop to tuck the tail end through.
Hi Muskrat, do you have any rattlesnake hatbands for sale? Thanks!
Good morning Bill. I don't have any made, but I do have a snake skin I could use to make one. My email is muskrat14@hotmail.com
What kind of glue?
I use Barge Cement, or Weldwood/Dap.....basically contact cement, rubber type glue. It needs to stay somewhat flexible.
Good video
Thank you!
How did you preserve the snake overnight without Rigamortus setting in? I’m in a similar position and doing want to skin it till tomorrow
Snakes are a lot like fish and spoil fast. Skin it as soon as possible, but it will keep several days in the refrigerator. Skinning them only takes a few minutes though and it's best to do it as soon as possible.
I kept one in the frig for 3 days no problem.
Well my mother had a problem. She thought it was leftovers at a glance lmfao Nope
Wat kind of glue is that
Rubber cement / contact cement. I use either Barge Cement, or Weld Wood Dap contact cement.
That's great. I'm going to make one for my dad using a copperhead skin. Thanks for the great instructive video.
Just got a new sub btw. Going to head over and watch some more!
Great! We don't have those here, but I've seen pictures of them. They should make a great hatband.
Great! Thank you, and welcome!!
How did you dry it?
Skin as much flesh as possible off the belly scales, then use push pins (thumbtacks) along the edges, inside pointing out, and pin it to a board.
Do you have any for sale right now?
I don't, but I do have some snake skins and could make one up. Let me know if you would like one!
Muskrat Outdoors I would love to have one, they are absolutely gorgeous!
Do you soak yours in a solution at all or is it not truly necessary?
No, I don't for things like this. You really don't need to and the glue will stick a lot better also.
How long did do you dry/tan them for?
Usually they dry in a day or less. Snake skin is really thin. I don't tan them for hat bands. Glued down to leather they really don't need to be.
What kind of glue
Barge cement, or Weld Wood /Dap contact cement.
What kind of hat is that? Like the round top
It's a felt "Beaver Brand" hat. Every hat I've ever had will eventually crack where it's creased, so years ago I started punching them out round. They shed water better that way too!
Buzz Worm 😂😂
Ha! I had a good friend who has since died that always called them that.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
How do I buy a rattlesnake hatband from you ?
I don't always have them. I'm so behind on my leatherwork, I don't want to take any more orders right now. I think what I'll try doing, is make one now and then, and put it up for sale on these videos.
@@MuskratOutdoors okay, please let me know of any other items you sell I’d be interested 🤠 thanks

Hello neighbor! We are in Salmon.
Where do you sell these
Mostly I don't. I have a booth at the Horse Sale here in town where I sell my leatherwork once a year. I don't get very many snakes, so I don't sell them very often.
@@MuskratOutdoors well thank you anyway! Loved the video
@@micahsimpson1989 Thank you very much. I do get snakes from time to time. If you send me your email address (Mine is in the "about" section on the home page) I'll let you know if I get one.
They need to go , yes sir that is wolves you are talking about ?!!!!!
How did you dry the skin?
Just stretch it out onto a board and use thumbtacks along the edges.
