- We hit 2,000 subscribers here on this channel July 2022, and I wanted to do a giveaway to thank you all for your amazing support! I also wanted to combine that with a review of the @arteza watercolor sketchbooks, because those are the sketchbooks that got me started in art and gave me the freedom to start filling sketchbooks with confidence. I am seriously stealing your swatch book idea, OMG how is it so satisfying seeing all the swatches together?! I actually have a set of these sketchbooks, and one is unused so that might be it's destiny right there. The Arteza sketchbooks are great for goauche and mixed media, but I was disappointed by how they handled watercolor (beyond just light washes). I feel like my paints absorb into the paper instantly and can't be lifted or moved around at all. That said it is SO SO important to have a "low pressure" sketchbook that you can just play in with any medium, and they are great for that. And oh my goodness that Alpaca meme painting is SO good! Also CONGRATS on the subscriber mileston and one year of consistently awesome videos! 🥰

On the "smooth" side of the paper that has definitely been my experience, and I tend to just use colored pencil, posca, acrylic, or gouache on that side, and leave my watercolor to the watercolor ('cold press' texture side), and haven't had problems on that side. But on the other hand, I haven't used one of these for my main painting work since 15 sketchbooks ago, and my work has definitely evolved. I've just painted swatches in these since my 10th sketchbook, so I wonder if it would be different if I tried a full piece in one with where my style is now! @@CreatingCuteArt that's interesting, I'm also curious if I got a bad batch or something? Or maybe my paints just don't get along with it. I still think they are a good mixed media sketchbook for the price but I wish they called it mixed media instead of watercolor lol

I did get an inexpensive sketchbook and am not showing it to ANYONE, I think that will definitely help take the pressure off. I need to make a swatch sketchbook for everything because i have a habit to grab pretty colors and i always get doubles , plus it's so pretty just looking through it. Ooo them oil pastels look like fun. Giveaways are so exciting. I always enjoy seeing your videos and posts on youtube and instagram.
Same here on re-buying the same colors (I guess it's good that I'm consistently attracted to the same colors, but man what a waste of money lol!). The swatch book has definitely helped me avoid that. Good luck!!

I can‘t believe I didn’t even see this as this milestone just happened sad 😔 depression sucks. Maggie, this made me cry like half a minute in, I am so happy for you!! but at the same time I don’t understand how you don’t have an even bigger following! Your videos are always a ray of sunshine, everything from your personality, to the variety and quality of your content to your beautiful stunning artworks, you live and breathe art and yet you still don’t neglect your daily life and the people in it. You and Sketches are just such huge inspiration! Again, more people should see your videos, they are encouraging and uplifting. I was like omg when I saw those Arteza sketchbooks! They no longer sell them in Europe unfortunately!! They are like 90€ now if you wanna ship them! They have flaws, sure, but they really make me feel the least fearful when it comes to sketching and trying out ideas in a wet medium! The swatches were like P *rn to me haha 😆 Lol btw I wasn’t aware that there is a system for which pages are textured and which aren’t and what texture, to me it always seemed completely random! Also it was awesome to see sketches and artworks I have somehow missed (you are so good at portraits!!!). My verdict on this sketchbook is it really is fantastic for swatches (the granulation shows SO nicely!) and especially Gouache, watercolor pieces I find that the paint bleeds beyond the puddle corners in a feathery manner, if you paint and reach the pencil corner all is good but after 20 seconds the paint for e.g. skin or a flower petal has moved beyond the line into the background, but depending on the project that doesn’t have to be an issue. Anyway, I am happy for the Giveaway winner! Gotta stop here and watch more vids of yours ❤️
I love love LOVED this comment because it felt like talking to you and I miss that! We should try to do a three way zoom with Sketches and just get it in the books so we know it will happen! I’m so sorry you’re feeling depressed right now and I hope you’re getting outside and getting support you need right now. You are a wonderful, sweet, talented, interesting and funny person and I hope you feel better soon my sweet friend! I can’t believe these have become so hard to get, I remember at the beginning of the pandemic it seemed like Arteza was giving them away and now they’re in high demand!

Thanks for this. I'm doing Memorial day shopping on Arteza site and looking for something to swatch my new Artecho oil pastels. I came across the 5x8 watercolor book and wanted to know what its like; you gave me that insight and I will be purchasing it. But, I will also use it to swatch other water soluble mediums too.
Yes! My swatching book has always been an arteza watercolor, and the only medium it has struggled with yet is fountain pen writing (unless it's a fine of some kind it feathers). Very impressive!

They are really fun to work with. The big difference is that these are oil based and Neocolor II are wax based, but the look is very similar on paper so it's a great way to dip a toe!!
