  • Color Swatch Sketchbook Tour: See How I Study Color! 🎨 take a tour of my color study book. I enjoy studying swatches and pigment info along with how the colors interact with my core palette. This helps me choose colors for paintings. It is so interesting how just changing a yellow can shift the whole color world. Be sure to leave in the comments which color family I should study next!

I didn't know that about the enviro pigments, thank you for that. I love your magic black, it's gorgeous, and the mixes where it's more blue or brown leaning, going to have to try that mix. Love seeing how others record colour mixes, thank you for sharing ❤

Thank you for sharing the story about the iron oxides. Very interesting. I don't live far from a lot of the NE Pennsylvania anthracite coal mines and it is not rare to see the "orange/rust" color water from the mines. I'm glad to know someone has found a lucrative way to both clean up the environment and develop a profitable business from the process.

Thank you for sharing, this website is really eye opening to research more about the superfund sites in the US. You can even look by state to see how many are in your area. www.epa.gov/superfund/search-superfund-sites-where-you-live --I hope that Daniel Smith can expand on these pigments to offer even more colors and further support the clean ups.

Thank you for sharing this. It is a valuable lesson for anyone who wants be get really good at watercolor. “Know your paints”! It takes an effort to start but once you get it set up it can become your bible of watercolor and it will last forever. It’s one of the best things I ever did and it has paid huge dividends. There are different approaches, but I just got a standard sized loose leaf notebook and swatched each of my pigments on watercolor paper scraps about the size of a baseball cards. I have the pigment name, number, brand, and qualities on each swatch. Then I put them into plastic baseball card sleeves. They are tab separated by color family. Then I have other entries of full pages with ‘color studies’ and mixing experiments. I refer to this book constantly. I also have a spiral notebook where I record the pigments used in every painting I’ve done.

Thank you for sharing your process, I often get teased about all my swatching (friendly teases) but I've learned so much from studies like these and it truly helps my watercolors. Studying color and playing with mixes also helps me to stay creative on days where I may not have the energy or inspiration for painting. Always so happy to meet other swatchers!

New here, and I'm loving your videos. I'm a huge DS fan, as their color range is top notch, and some of my favorite mixes I cannot reproduce with other brands. I started with DS watercolors, and have stuck with them. I have a lifetime of their PO49, and the mixes that pigment makes are just sooo lovely. Great video Buffy!!!

Awesome, I really love the old PO49, what is your favorite mix? --am also quite fond of the new formulation, both really add such a glow to watercolors.

Oh my…a book of my dreams. I just ordered a cheap, very large, WC sketchbook to try and order all my mix and comparative swatches..which now reside in a folder file. Haven’t decided whether I’m going to glue or tape them..but you certainly gave me some ideas!
My yellows..I feel like we need a book on them. They look so similar..until you go to mixing them.😊

Yes I love yellows so much that I did two studies on them, here are those videos if you want to do a deep dive:

I’m still watching…I JUST received some E-F Brown & Mars yellow a few days ago. I haven’t started mixing swatches yet, but you certainly gave me some ideas! As I’m primarily a landscape painter…working on some critters (I got an app to try and figure out WHY my paintings of my ginger Dr Kitty Leela are SO off..dangled if PINK didn’t come up a BUNCH 🤯. I’d used some peach, but looking at the color identifier..I was blown away at how far off I was. I KNOW it should be our own interpretation..but I really want to do a tighter, more realistic painting of my long-haired, 3/4 Maine Coon ginger queen! My friend thinks it’s my failing vision..which is certainly possible. I just don’t think I have enough experience yet. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Ooohh..the blue-gray with the amazonite..gotta go try that!

Thank you for sharing, I will sometimes do more than one painting trying different colors, I call it the goldilocks approach, paint it till you get that "just right:"
